IPOD Shuffle is frozen

My Ipod Shuffle is frozen. No matter how many times I hold down the select and menu buttons to reboot it, it's still frozen. (I know the scroll wheel works because I can reset it this way.) the screen itself isn't frozen, when turning the hold switch on, the lock appears ont he screen, and when turning the lock switch off the lock symbol dissapears. Randomly once every few days for an hour or so it'll unfreeze, but then it will just freeze right back up again and I don't know what causes it to act that way each time....
Also Itunes allows me to still add songs to it, and when it unfreezes on those random times, those songs are on my IPOD and work.
I'm not sure what to do!

I am not sure if what I have is the same thing. But I noticed that there is no sign of power. I toggle the switch and through some effort it comes back and the power setting is fine (green). I usually have to go to the other music mode.
So my though is that the power circuitry for the iPod Shuffle got messed up. The device usually plays for a while too. So I think that heat gets to it and opens a circuit.
Oh yeah, when I regain use of it it starts off where I left the last listening session which can be several songs or more back. It works then ticks me off when it locks up.

  • "Frozen" IPOD Shuffle

In early January, my IPOD Shuffle froze after I downloaded an update from Apple. My ITunes shows my IPod name, all songs are checked and the IPod is fully charged but my IPod won't play any music.I have removed and then re-installed ITunes and I restored my IPod to factory settings but it still won't work.I noticed on this website and on other sites that many other are having the same problem---does anyone have an answer as I really miss my IPod.

  • HT1447 how to fix ipod shuffle 4th generation when frozen?

I don't know whats wrong with my ipod shuffle 4th generation. It's not working.

Instead of "charger," you should call it the "USB cable" to avoid confusion.  When started reading your post, I was thinking, how can your son break a USB power adapter (the "charger" that plugs into a wall socket) by biting it...
Since you got the product with the two USB cables at the Apple Store, you have the right replacement (some third-party replacements are for the 2nd gen shuffle and do not work with the 4th gen shuffle).  Make sure you are completely inserting the plug into the headphones jack.  The fit may be tighter than expected, since the connectors are new.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3572
If you tried both of those cables, it would be unlikely that you got two faulty cables in one package.  If a new USB device has been added to the computer between the time it worked with the old cable and now, there could be a problem on the USB bus (such as not enough power or a device conflict).
As a test, you should shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices (including any hub), except for standard keyboard and mouse (if used).  Do this to reset the shuffle

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle by itself to a direct USB port on the computer.

  • Any hope for this iPod Shuffle stuck in DFU Mode?

I received a 2nd Gen iPod Shuffle that was in dire straits. The owner complained that they couldn't access it at all, for anything.
Plugging it in and looking at the System Profiler, the device showed up as a "USB DFU Device". Googling this issue, I found that Shuffles in this condition can be repaired using the iPod Reset Utility.
I downloaded the utility, installed it and ran it, and clicked the "Reset" button to reset the Shuffle to factory settings. At the part for "Waiting for the iPod to restart - do not disconnect", the utility freezes. NO spinning beach ball or anything, just stuck. CPU usage for the "iPod Reset Utility" in Activity Monitor stays at 0.0%.
After about a minute or so of watching this frozen program, a pop up window appears with the following error:
    "Error
    An error occurred resetting iPod."
Googling this error message yields one forum post in another language without any follow-up. This error message is really vague and I have no idea why it's doing this.
I do not have much hope for this Shuffle, but I'm curious if anyone knows of anything else I can do to bring this Shuffle back to life.

ok got it fixed it needed to be shut down when i plugged into the computer for the itunes to recognize it my ipod kept on restarting as soon as it shut down thank you for the help

  • My ipod shuffle 4th generation cannot be reset

Hi I have an ipod shuffle 4th generation. It was working perfectly fine when suddenly it wouldnt charge and also it is not being detected by pc. I have windows 7 installed on my pc. I thought it would be frozen so I followed the resetting steps on the apple site for a frozen Ipod shuffle 4th gen, but still noting seems to work. Please provide me with a solution asap...

Is this what you tried to Reset the shuffle?
    support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
You do have a "shuffle," correct?  Not a nano?  I ask because a shuffle has no screen, so there is nothing that would appear to be "frozen" and no indicator for it charging (except for a light).

  • Ipod shuffle freezes up itunes and I can't restore it

I recently replaced the hard drive on my computer and reinstalled itunes. I have several children with ipods, so they have all plugged in their ipods and synced it with the new version of itunes and the "new" library since it was reinstalled. Two of my sons have ipod shuffles, 2nd generation. When I plugged in one of them it said several error messages, such as this device cannot be synced properly an unknown error occurred. So, I managed to get his ipod restored yesterday, and he was able to add songs and sync his ipod. However, when he plugged it in today it came up saying "verifying max's ipod" and then it froze up itunes. It did this yesterday as well, but I was able to restore it, today I click on the settings tab and it is frozen,, so I can't even get into the settings to restore it. I tried running the ipod reset utility, but it did nothing and I also tried some appleipod.bat file, which also did not help. If anyone is able to give helpful suggestions you will make an 11-year-old boy very happy, and his mother will be less frustrated.

IF it's a 2n Generation shuffle (the one with the clip), it's still under warranty and you can get it serviced/replaced by Apple, either by going to a an Apple Store or online through

  • My iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen keeps crashing/freezing the newest iTunes update!

I found my iPod shuffle a couple months ago after about 3 or 4 years of non use. IWhen I tried plugging it into iTunes it said that the files were corrupt and I would need to use the utility reset application to fix it. When I tried to do that I couldn't because Apple never updated the software for newer Windows computers so I was stuck with this broken iPod. Today when I finally updated iTunes, this version recongnized it immediately, and asked me if I wanted to restore it. As soon as I restore it the iPod became responsive and began blinking orange as if it was charging. But when I went back to the iTunes window, it was completely frozen. I tried disconnecting the device and ending the task and the iTunes window was still frozen. After reseting my computer and logging back on (with the device disconnected) I clicked iTunes and it was working fine, until I connected my shuffle. It froze right back up. I never got a chance to look at the specs, like the usage or whatever so I don't know if anything is wrong there. One weird thing that happend when I connected my iPod is a Microsoft window popped up saying that my devices files maybe corrupt. I don't know what that means but if you can help please do so! I'd really like to put music back on it to began using it again, it's in great shape and it looks brand new. Thanks again!!

  • Refurbished ipod shuffle warranty

    Hi,
I have just bought a refurbished ipod shuffle online last week , and went to check the left over warranty days online today. However, the result shows:
Our records indicate that your product is covered under Apple’s Limited Warranty and your estimated date of purchase was 19-Dec-05. Based on this data, your product will be covered by Apple service warranty for 238 more days.
The above does not reflect the actual purchase date. Is there anything i can do to inform Apple about the incorrect estimated date of purchase, and change to the correct date. What should i do now???
    Thks in advance...

  • Ipod shuffle 1GB volume problem?

hello, i have a 1gb ipod shuffle, bought it 3 months back, meaning the 90 day warantee is gone, and now is exactly when its just messed up!!!.
the other day i was using my ipod shuffle and when i tried to put the volume higher, the volume steadily decreased until i couldnt hear anything. i thought that maybe the battery needs a charge so i left it for charge, but ever since its still not working.
its really annoying that something that i bought 3 months ago is already damaged? ive been keeping very good care of it and have also got the apple sock thing. ive tried resetting the ipod, also updating the software but nothing has worked so far.
if anyone could help id be very greatful..
    thanks

    Here's something to try sunny...
In playing around with mine, I have determined that the problem is somehow linked to the battery level indicator button. When music is playing, it seems that pressing the battery button makes the iPod more susceptible to the volume fading to nothing.
It may just be a coincidence, but there's more.
After the volume fades, the iPod is unresponsive. I've found randomly turning it on and off will eventually get it to work again, for a bit. However, while the iPod is frozen and still switched to on, try pressing the battery button. In my short experience that enabled me to use it again... at least until the whole problem happens again.
If this doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to explain it better. Or maybe we don't actually have the same issue. Mine's definitely bunk though, but at least I've found how to make it almost usable until it's replaced.
Good luck, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
    EDIT:
Hmmm, it seems pressing either forward or backward will also unfreeze the iPod. Man, I hate these intermittent, weird problems.
Let me know if your shuffle is as crazy as this...

  • New 3rd Gen. 4 GB iPod Shuffle not being recognized by computer or iTunes

Hey everyone, I've read some of the other posts here on this thread about other people having problem getting their computer to recognize the new 4 GB iPod Shuffle when plugged into the USB drive, and it seems like I am having a very similar issue. I just received my iPod in the mail a few days ago and tried plugging it into the USB and got NO response whatsoever from my computer or iTunes. I am operating with Windows XP (Service Pack 3) on a Dell Inspiron Intel processor, 2 GHz with 3 GB RAM, with iTunes 8.1 (just updated). When I put something in my USB usually I hear a noise (sounds like DO-do ha) which tells me that my laptop recognizes whatever is plugged in, and usually I get a little box in the bottom right hand part of the screen that says it's been plugged in. I didn't get any of this when I plugged it in.
When I first opened the box I turned the shuffle on and the light went green for 1 second, orange for 1 second, red for one second, then dead..I suppose this is expected since I figured it's new and needs to be charged, so I turned the shuffle off, plugged the USB into the earphone socket then into my USB, and then turned the shuffle on, and got nothing but the same sequence of lights. It's one thing if iTunes just didn't recognize the shuffle, but I checked the Device Manager and My Computer and the USB drive wasn't even listing the shuffle as being plugged in..maybe the USB cable that came with it is faulty?? I read all of the technical troubleshooting notes on here and tried the 5 R's and nothing is working at all..
I do have one guess about this though..I also have an 80 GB iPod 5th generation that I've used for over a year now for my car and that plugs into the USB fine with its respective cable and is recognized by iTunes..my question is, can my iTunes only recognize one iPod at a time? Does it reject the shuffle because iTunes is only allowed to sync to one iPod per account? If this is true, is there a way around this so it can sync both, or can I have two iTunes accounts on the same computer? But why does the computer not even recognized it when plugged in? Hopefully it is just the cable that is damaged and not the device..wow this was long, but any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

iTunes for Windows does not support having multiple iPods *connected simultaneously.*

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes v7.0 - What Now?

    Hello everyone,
I am having the same problem as many who have posted here. I have upgraded my software to iTunes v7.0.1.8. I also accepted the auto update for my iPod Shuffle - 512GB 1st Gen to v 1.44 (I believe). Of course, now my Shuffle is not recognized in iTunes and is only recognized in Windows for less than 5 seconds (as I have monitored it). I am listing below all of the actions I have taken today.
As none of these have worked, my question is now what? Does anyone have any other suggestions before I take the dreaded step of calling support? Any help is appreciated.
I am not happy with this upgrade issue at all. I expect much better from Apple.
    Steps Already Taken:
    1. Reset iPod.
    2. Set Terminal Services to "Manual" and restarted my laptop PC.
    3. Changed all USB Root Hub entries power management options to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option" and rebooted.
    4. Assigned my external hard drive a different letter as it was assigned to "E" and tech support documentation suggested I changed it - I changed it to "M".
    5. I stopped the iPod Service via the Services and Application interface from My Computer/Manage, reattached the Shuffle, and started the iPod Service. The Shuffle was still not recognized.
    6. I uninstalled iTunes 7.0.1.8, the Apple Software update and QuickTime. I deleted all temp directories; program files folders and all possible traces of all three pieces of this software. I also deleted my iTunes library. I reinstalled all of this software and re-built my Library. NONE OF THIS WORKED!
My 30GB Video iPod works fine and always has - it is only the shuffle for which I have this issue any only since the upgrade.
What do I do now? If no one has another fix, I will be forced to call Tech Support after an experience with them over a year ago I would almost rather throw this thing away!

qswh - I too cannot play the songs that are loaded on the shuffle. Additionally, I get a green & orange light when I plug it into a USB port and then I either get a blinking orange light or a solid orange light from there after.

  • My IPOD shuffle cannot be udpated

Every time I try to load a song into my IPOD shuffle I get the following error message:
"The IPOD cannot be udpated. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have downloaded the updates, reset the IPOD, and all goes well until I try to drag a song from my hard drive onto the IPOD and I get the error message.
    Any thoughts?
    JETERBOY

Now the iPod is unusable with the Recovery mode loop. The full error below:
"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes."
I can see my IPOD under devices on the left pane of iTunes while the error displays. But when I click OK, the IPOD disappears under DEVICES as does the DEVICES category.
and also when i remove my ipod from computer it isn`t light any light never the battery show

  • SOLUTION: Windows Vista + iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen

My original question on this topic is closed, but I finally fixed the problem and wanted to share.
The problem was: Windows Vista Basic desktop machine and iTunes would recognize a Video iPod, but not recognize an iPod second generation Shuffle
The symptom: Vista showed an unknown USB device and kept searching for drivers, but never could find an appropriate driver. Some posts here and there suggested a power level problem on the USB ports.
The solution: the original USB 2.0 ports on this computer are all driven directly off of the motherboard. I purchased a $20 PCI USB card and installed it in the computer. I plugged the iPod shuffle into the new PCI card, and everything works fine now.
    HTH

And since you have a laptop, a new PCI card does no good. Another solution I saw around the web was to use a powered external USB 2.0 hub. You might try that.
