(ipod shuffle) software updates on CD?

hi,
is it possible to get software updates (specifically ishuffle and itunes) on CD?
Itunes is telling me that a new software version is available (for my ishuffle and itunes), but I'm loathed to sit connected on my snail-paced modem for 4 hours while the update dowloads! I'd like to keep my shuffle updated with the latest bug-fixes.
Is the CD route an option? If so, is there a cost??
Thanx in advance for any answers!

Thanks for the replies! Will have a go at the broadband to CD method

  • IPod shuffle software update status different between users

With User 1, iTunes 7.0.2 says my 2G iPod shuffle is up to date (software version: 1.0). If I switch to User 2 and plug the same iPod shuffle into the dock, then iTunes says there's an iPod sofware update available (version 1.0.1). I decline the offer to update. Going back to User 1, no update is suggested (version 1.0 is current).
Why does iTunes report a different software update status depending on which user is active? I don't think there's a software version 1.0.1 for the 2G iPod shuffle.
There is no ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ folder for either user.

Summary: on the Summary tab, click Restore (will pop up a confirmation dialog), then Cancel, and the Update button then indicate version 1.0.1 for User 1. Then click Update. iTunes did the update, no muss, no fuss.

I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?

What version of iTunes are you using?  The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.

Sorry Glen, but there is not. And you don't have to upgrade to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).  You need at a minimum of 10.5.8 (Leopard).

  • IPod Touch software update suggestions - Attention Apple Development!

Maybe this has occurred to you folks at Apple, but how about an iPod Touch software update that allows the user to create 'folders' to organize YouTube bookmarks? Even better, a way to do this in the sync-page of iTunes as well. And another suggestion - a way to select which Safari bookmarks are synched; better yet which browser to sync (Safari, Firefox, etc. - can't do this on the Mac as far as I can tell).

Click here and fill out the form to send comments to the iPod touch engineers.

  • Great News! New iPod shuffle software!

This update (as I have confirmed) fixes the infamous non-playable iTunes Music Service song problem that causes the shuffle to free or hang before playing a certain purchased song. Also, be sure to check out your iPod options because this update also adds the much desirable SOUND CHECK function to the shuffle's repertoire!
Mac users use Software Update (there's also a new Security Update for Tiger users).
Windows users head to the iPod website to download.
    Enjoy!

Okay, on my 512MB iPod shuffle it does appear that the problem with non-playable iTunes Music Store songs has been resolved. It's fixed, finally. I had five songs that I'd purchased out of approximately 500 that would cause my iPod shuffle to lock-up, they all work now. However, there is a side effect or continued problem, you can't restart these songs once they have been paused, the player just skips to the next song in the list. So, either Apple didn't test for that little problem, or it's an unavoidable side effect to how they fixed the much more serious lock-up bug. I suspect it may be the latter.
Also, Ben, I can't find any addition for the sound check function for the shuffle. It appears in the iTunes Audio preference (as always), but under iPod it just show the following five options:
Open iTunes when this iPod is attached
Keep this iPod in the source list
    Only update checked songs
Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC for this iPod
Enable disk use (and the More Songs...More Data slider)
Also, I don't hear any improvement in the control of the volume levels on my shuffle, even though I have sound check enabled in the Audio preferences for iTunes.
So, it appears that you may have been incorrect about the addition of sound check or only certain iPod shuffles support that new feature. I purchased my shuffle fairly early, about one month after they were first introduced.

  • Is iPod Jan Software Update tied to one iPod or one Account - No audio

I think I've been a good scout thus far. I've followed the forums, all the complaints and all the issues and STILL purchased the Jan Software update for my iPod 16 GB.
From the advice, I knew to back up my music, make the purchase and do an automatic sync from my mac to the iPod. Apart from a few hiccups this worked fine and the update did appear and I could use the applications.
Unfortunately, post-update, there was no longer any audio output from the audio (headphone) jack despite trying multiple headphones and trying to play music, podcasts or video. When I connected my iPod Touch to the iBook, the iBook could play media from the iPod with audio through the iBook's speakers so I knew there was audio.
Apart from the fact that this is highly irritating, I decided to take the iPod in today to a service centre who told me they would look at it and only contact me within 3 -5 days. I would probably get a new iPod if they couldn't fix my problem.
When I told them that my iPod had the knew update they told me that they couldn't/didn't know anything about this - and didn't know what new iPod would be exchanged or which software.
HERE'S MY QUESTION - in the event that I do get a new iPod Touch without the update or with a version lower than 1.1.13, will I be able to use my purchased Jan Software Update or do I have to re-purchase?
    Thanks.

The iPod touch January Software Upgrade can only be synced to iPod touch from the primary iTunes library. If the user is manually managing music and video on iPod, this is the computer where they first set up the iPod or first set it up after restoring the iPod. The "iPod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" file can be copied from the computer where you purchased it to your primary iTunes library computer, and sync the iPod from there.
    The file is located here:
    Mac OS X:
    ~/Library/iTunes/Mobile Applications
    Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Applications\
    Windows Vista:
    C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\\Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Applications\
Note: These locations are hidden by default in Windows. You can these locations by choosing "Show hidden files and folder" in the View tab of the Folder Options Control Panel.
Once you have copied the "iPod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" file to the computer with your home library, make a new folder named Mobile Applications in the correct location, and place the "iPod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" file there. Open iTunes and sync your iPod touch.

  • 1st Gen Ipod Shuffle not updating with iTunes 7.0whatever

My 1st gen. shuffle was doing just fine updating from my iTunes playlist with the older version of iTunes. Then last night I upgraded to 7.0whatever the latest version is and now when I plug in the shuffle to update, I get the usual updating iPod message and then I get the message that it's done...but....nothing has been loaded onto the shuffle.
If I change the playlist for the shuffle to load from, I don't get any little spinning circles next to the song titles and iTunes will freeze up and I'll have to end the program from Task Manager.
I've restored the shuffle to it's original factory settings (even using the special restore program), I've uninstalled and restarted and reinstalled iTunes. I've deleted the temp directory, restarted, reinstalled iTunes. No luck.
The shuffle does work though on an older computer that has an older version of iTunes.
What's in the new version of iTunes that's not agreeing with Win XP and how do I fix it?
    Thanks for your help!

Well, I have that problem too. My shuffle holds about 125 songs or so, yet I've noticed there are always a good 20 or so songs that won't play, no matter how many times I load them onto the device. I have had that problem since I inherited it from a friend.
My new problem is that every time I plug my iPod into iTunes, it no longer updates the playcount for songs. In other words, if I load a song that I've heard 3 times, hear it twice during the day, and replug in my iPod at night, it used to update that song's playcount in the library to 5, but now they still read 3. It's also failing to update the "date last played" field.
I use those to help make sure that I don't load the same songs over and over again by creating a custom playlist that will comb out songs played in the last few days and have a very high play count. Since these are no longer updating, I've noticed that I keep arriving at work only to find my iPod has the same or similar songs as the day before, and dude, if I wanted that, I'd listen to the radio!

  • I tried to update my ipod touch software update by syncing with itunes and now its in recovery mode?  Is it possible to get it out of recovery mode?  if so, then how?

I tried to update my ipod touch software by syncing with itunes and it put the ipod into "recovery mode".  Seems like the only option is to restore?  Is there a way to get it out of recovery mode?

  • 1st gen ipod Shuffle not updating play count for songs

I've noticed since I updated to the iTunes version 7.2.035 that plugging in and updating the library with my iPod shuffle no longer updates the play count for the songs I've listened to. Is there a known fix for this? Anyone else experiencing the same problem with their 1st gen ipod shuffle (512)?

  • Updating iPod After Software Update

    Howdy,
Bit of a problem here. All of the software was updated last night and my iPod has been updated, yet it now says I need to plug it in to the standard electricity supply for it to update, but I don't have that plug. So, I can't use my iPod
Anything I can do to stop this or bypass it? I've only got the USB cable still
    Cheers

When updating or restoring the iPod via a usb connection, it needs to be plugged into power via the charger to complete the process, and this is why you see that icon displayed.
You may be able to complete the process via a car charger, or via a powered firewire port on the computer (with the required 6 pin cable of course) if you have access to either of those. Or maybe visit an Apple store if one is nearby.
    Or you can try this.

I make no claims as to whether this will work, but merely point it out.
Other than that, your iPod cannot be used until you complete this process.

  • IPod Shuffle Software 1.1.4 is it safe to use?

    Hi,
I was just wondering if it safe for me to use this on my iPod. Cause my last iPod shuffle had green and amber lights after installing 1.1.1. then when i got this one i keep 1.1 on it,
    many thanks

If you mean you're looking for a guarantee that nothing will go wrong if you upgrade to 1.1.4, no matter how you do it, then no ....... from that perspective, it's not safe.
If you're asking with installing 1.1.4 damage a Shuffle, no matter who installs it or when or how then, again, no. From that point of view it is safe.
Upgrading is never mandatory or forced and, if you don't want to and don't want the new features that might be included in the upgrade (Volume limiting, for example, is included in 1.1.4) then of course you can just skip it. Eventually you will probably face some incomptiblity between iTunes and Shuffle software and, when that happens, you'll have to make different choices.

  • IPod 4 Software Update stuck. Please help!

Hi everyone! I feel really stupid for not knowing this before I tried to install a software update on my iPod 4, but I guess you need to set it back to it's factory settings in oreder to do that? Now it's stuck on a screen that shows the white cord pointing to the iTunes symbol. Anyone know how to get it back to normal? I really don't want to have to restart it, because I have forgoten some of my passwords, and stuff like that. If anyone knows how to get it  baxck to normal, or if there is even anyway to do that, I would really appreciate you telling me Thanks everybody!

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • Ipod mini software update!

Is there a way to uninstall the recent software update of the ipod mini as i am having problems with adding songs to ipod that i was not having before the update. re-setting ipod via the updater doesn't do the trick!

"re-setting ipod via the updater doesn't do the trick! "
You can't reset the iPod via the updater, you can only restore or update the software.
In order to revert to an older version of the software, you would have to find an older updater (on your computer or the installation disk perhaps?) and use that.

  • Cannot restore iPod shuffle after update

I have an iPod shuffle original model. For the past few years it has played music as background to my space. Today it went silent.
I plugged into my Powerbook and iTunes offered to update it which is probably the basis of the following problem.
Try and try but that same file from the iTunes library will no longer go into the iPod. I tested with a second one and got the same.
What is the problem? This is my own recording imported via Quicktime and plays on my photo iPod which I'm using instead; but it will not even copy to the iPod shuffle. But it was there for years!
    This is galling.

I had this error as well. I re-installed the updater to get it working again.
