Ipod shuts down my laptop

I tried to add new music to my ipod yesterday. Itunes wiped my ipod clean and then refused to recognise my ipod to allow me to re-sunc. Now whenever I plug my ipod into my laptop windows closes down and gives me an error message and shuts down to prevent any damage. What has happened and is there a solution ?

All I can offer is these list of solution steps, perhaps it's a software problem or you need to do a SMC or PRAM rest

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

  • Sleep or shut down the laptop?

Is it better to sleep or shut down the laptop? I mean in general for the laptop, not necessarily to save battery or anything. Thank you!

No need to shut down unless perhaps the laptop is going to be in a travel bag for a while.
I just close the lid to stop using; open the lid to use.
I've been doing this routine since OS X 10.0.

  • When I try to use iMessage on my iPod touch 4 (ios6) the iPod shuts down and restarts

Every time I try to open my iMessage my iPod shuts down. I have a 4th gen iPod with ios6. I will attempt to open the app and it will either shut down and restart as soon as the white screen comes up or I will see my previous messages and try to open a thread then it will restart. I have tried restarting the phone as well as turning iMessage on as off. Has anybody else had this problem? What can I do?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Note this will delete messages currently on the iPod:
Go to settings>Messages>Send and Receive and sign out of Messages and sign back in.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • IPod shuts down when connected to iTunes

My fully charged iPod shuts down within 1 minute of connecting to iTunes. iTunes recognizes/reads the iPod until the iPod shuts down. I considered the battery but the iPod will play about 6 hours on a charge. This happened with the old iTunes software and also after I installed the new 7.0.2 yesterday.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is the software on the iPod up to date too?
Have you tried connecting via a different USB port?
Also, try resetting the iPod while it is connected to the computer...

  • Ipod shuts down on some podcasts

I have recently purchased a new ipod, 80gb, and I love it. I have upgraded from the 60gb. Only problem is that on some podcasts, not all, when I go into the podcast the ipod shuts down and I am unable to play the podcast. After a few seconds the apple comes on the screen. You can tell that something is going on with the ipod and a few seconds later the menu comes back up. This is really annoying. I have tried to remedy this by unsubscribing, deleting the podcast and subscribing again. Didn't work. Can anyone help me with this?

Is this what you refer to?

  • IPod shuts down, comes back, shuts down, etc...

I have looked on the board for this problem, and have found a few similarities, but none that actually match my case. So, here goes...
First of all, my iPod: he is a very old 20GB iPod, a gift from Christmas 2003, and I have been considering replacing him or his battery, but I'm not sure that replacing the battery will fix this problem and I'd really rather not shell out $400 when all I want is my same iPod only working (I've got no interest in getting a new color iPod that holds a bazillion songs and plays videos and mixes songs and predicts my future and can save the world and everything--I just want to listen to music, that's all).
Anyway, so the problem is as follows: my iPod worked fine for about two years, aside from some minor problems (for example, sometimes if I clicked on a song he would think for a few seconds and then move to the song after it--but all I'd have to do is go right back to the song I wanted to play, and there would be no problem). No real difficulties charging, holding a charge, going to sleep, waking up, etc.
Then, last summer, I joined the cross-country team, and wore him when I ran, and he started having more problems. I have a little blue iPod belt-pack that I wear when I run, and it's supposed to keep the iPod from bouncing out and crashing onto the floor, which it does. However, it does not keep him from bouncing, and I think this is what started everything. I have a certain playlist that I listen to when I run, and sometimes he'll finish one song and the bouncing will mess him up and he'll skip several songs and move to one towards the end of the list (and refuse to play the skipped ones, even if I click on them manually--he'll just skip right over them again). I'm fairly sure it's the bouncing because I have noticed that if I run more slowly and softly when he's finishing a song, it reduces the chance of him having a hissy-fit and skipping the next seven songs.
(I should probably note here that he does not always skip the same songs, and all of my music plays fine most of the time, so it's not a song problem.)
Anyway, shortly thereafter he started having battery problems when I ran--occasionally he'd crash in the middle of a run, and display his Angry!Battery! sign when I tried to turn him back on. Annoying, but he didn't seem to have problems any other time, so I'd let it slide.
A few weeks ago, however, he started having SERIOUS battery problems. I'd be listening to him when I was doing homework or reading or some other mundane activity that involves little to no real motion, and he'd suddenly shut down after about half an hour and display his Angry!Battery! sign at me when I tried to turn him back on.
So this went on, and I got very frustrated, blah blah blah, and then he started being a NEW kind of broken.
Now, he'll shut down with no warning (although I have noticed that it happens quite often when I am scrolling through a song--it's not nearly as frequent when I just listen to a song all the way through), but turn back on when I try to turn him on. The battery is displayed as empty, but it refills itself as he plays, until he suddenly gets mad and shuts down again. Sometimes, I can turn him back on, and he plays for a good amount of time; sometimes, I can turn him back on and he plays for about a minute and then dies; other times, there'll be an Angry!Battery! sign and I have to plug him in.
So, to recap my most current problem, because this post is getting long:
    -iPod shuts down randomly
-iPod turns back on, shows empty battery, but plays anyway and battery slowly refills
-iPod shuts down again after about half an hour
-iPod occasionally turns on and plays as normal, often for as long as an hour; if not, iPod either turns on and shuts down after a few seconds, or shows Angry!Battery! sign and refuses to turn on.
Also I should probably mention that my brother got an identical iPod for Christmas the same year, and has never run with his or really used it for anything except listening to music when he studies or drives (he has one of those car gadget things), and doesn't have the same problems.
I'm thinking it's a battery problem, but the fact that sometimes he'll shut down and then come back and play for his usual amount of time (remember, this is a 2003 iPod, so the battery has never been as powerful as the new ones), and also the fact that it happens most often when I am moving through a song, makes me wonder. Should I pay the $60 to replace the battery, or is it time to just get a new iPod? (I really miss running with music.)
    Thanks!

It's not the tracks that are causing it to freeze up. It's random!
All these tracks have been on my iPod since day one and played fine and most of them are from iTMS anyway.
So your suggestions is not quite relevant.

  • Ipod shuts down

My ipod shuts down and switches itself off when i select a particular album. It works on other tracks, but this one (which has been fine up to now) it clicks the screen goes dark and then the apple logo appears very feintly. If I toggle the wheel and selection button in the middle it eventually restarts. I have tried the simple restart but to no avail. Any ideas ?

  • IPod shuts down due to "low battery" even when fully recharged

    OK..
I got big problems with my iPod battery.
I've already sent my iPod to Apple once, but they returned it saying nothing is wrong and giving "helpful" tips about turning the backlight off in order to make the battery last longer..
Well, I sorta disagree about there not being any problem. And I did feel a bit insulted about the claim that my iPod is not malfunctioning as well as the hints about me being a retard who needs to be told that using the backlight continuously might have an affect on battery life.
(but in case my retardedness is to blame for all my problems with my iPod, please let me know. )
During he last 2 months or so, the iPod keeps shutting down due to "low battery" even though it's been connected to the USB port for, like, 20 hours straight.
Tried different ports and computers without any luck.
The recharging-icon is usually moving while connected to the computer, but I don't get the "battery is fully loaded" message (or icon?) anymore.
Sometimes when the iPod has shut itself down due to low battery, it can still be used for ~10 hours by turning it on/resetting multiple times. When that happens, the battery icon is at first "empty", but then bar suddenly goes to half full.
I also suspect that resetting it 7 times before plugging it into a USB-port helps. Occasionally.
No way to tell if there's 15 hours or 15 seconds life left in he battery. I just got got home from a 2 x 8,5 hour flight and the iPod shut down right after the first take-off So.. yeah.. I'm ****** off atm.:/
I've tried all the tricks I've found on the net (resetting, software updates etc.) but nothing helps.
Don't know if it could have any relevance, but it seems like the problem appears more often when playing audio books - long mp3 files, that is...
    Help, anyone? Pretty please?
    PC   Windows XP

I have the exact same problem. About 2 weeks before the end of my 1-year warranty, I contacted Apple about the problem. They sent a box with prepaid shipping (I paid for it) and I sent the iPOD back to Apple. Today, I checked the status of my repair and the screen reads:
    Step 1 - Request
    Product received (05-Apr-2006)
    Step 2 - Service
    No trouble found (11-Apr-2006)
    Step 3 - Return
    Original product shipped (11-Apr-2006)
I contacted Apple Customer Service and was told that they ran diagnostics and nothing was wrong with the unit. I asked them if it mattered that I noticed problems with the iPOD that they don't seem to see and they said no. They said the problem could be with my charger, but I told them that I recently lost my charger and had used several different chargers that work with other peoples iPODs just fine. I even left it to charge overnight and the next day I could barely play one song. The woman I spoke with told me that if I had any problems with the iPOD after it was returned to me, I would have to send it back (they would not provide the box) and pay $225 since it is no longer in warranty .
My problem is that the unit was in warranty when I sent it, they didn't fix it (they couldn't find this very obvious problem), and now it isn't in warranty. The only way I can listen to music is to plug it into an A/C outlet while it is playing. My other option is to buy another mp3 player.
Has anyone else had this problem? Have you found a solution? Thanks!

  • I rebuild iPod Classics, I get one going, says use iTunes to restore, plug it into my computer, and the iPod shuts down! This is a first! Any ideas's?

    I Restore iPods Classic's

  • Installed AND Registrated LR 2 years ago. Shut down my Laptop. Next time I wanted to use LR it wouldn't start --- "Registration required"

Yesterday I shut down my Laptop.
Today I started it and wanted to use LR but it said "registration required" but I intalled AND registrated LR 2 years ago. Since then I never formated the Laptop. It came all of a sudden.
I still have my Key and everything but I'm affraid that if I use it a 2nd time on the same computer, I will not be able to use it on a 2nd one
How could that problem be fixed?
As I said, it was already registrated for 2 years on that exact same Laptop and there was no formatation what so ever
    Thanks in advance

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • I believe my MSWord app on my Mac just crushed and I cannot shut down my laptop. I'm concerned my computer might overheat. Anyone has any idea to share?

I believe my MS Word app on my Macbook just crushed and I could not shut down my laptop. I'm afraid the machine might overheat. Pls. help, anyone . . .

Tnx, Steve. I actually had that concern about force quitting the machine as suggested by 'shldr2thewheel'. Since I'm new to Mac, I went to several training sessions at Apple store. I remember in one session, the Apple Associate cautioned or rather dissuaded us to resort to that method. Instead, I simply allowed the machine run out of battery without closing the lid. Anyway, tnx for the inputs guyz.

  • IPod shuts down on specific songs

Just finished sync'ing my 5G 80GB with iTunes 7.0.1.8. Everything seems to work until I attempted to play this one specific song. As soon as it attempts to play the song, the iPod shuts down, I get the apple logo and the unit resets itself. All other songs play fine, except I found there are a number of other songs that cause the iPod to perform this reset as well. These songs all played fine on my 4G unit. What gives?? TIA!
    5G 80GB   Windows XP Pro

i had the exact same problem.. heres my story
i had a 30 gig ipod video.. all songs worked and
played fine. then i updated..and i had no
    problems..they still worked..and then i bought a 80
gig ipod video. and all of a sudden some songs would
cause my ipod to reset. it was weird cuz i know they
play because i used to listen to them all the time on
    my old 30 gig.
what i did was convert the songs that werent working
in the itunes "advanced- convert selection to aac"
and then they started to work..
First, thanks for the info! That did resolve the problem. But I'm still curious as to why this is happening. The challenge now is trying to identify the common denominator amongst the songs that are the culprit. Seems like they are all low quality, perhaps even MONO. Still my 4G 30GB used to play them just fine. Oh well, until then we have a good workaround. Thanks again!
