IPod shuts down on specific songs

Just finished sync'ing my 5G 80GB with iTunes 7.0.1.8. Everything seems to work until I attempted to play this one specific song. As soon as it attempts to play the song, the iPod shuts down, I get the apple logo and the unit resets itself. All other songs play fine, except I found there are a number of other songs that cause the iPod to perform this reset as well. These songs all played fine on my 4G unit. What gives?? TIA!
5G 80GB   Windows XP Pro

i had the exact same problem.. heres my story
i had a 30 gig ipod video.. all songs worked and
played fine. then i updated..and i had no
problems..they still worked..and then i bought a 80
gig ipod video. and all of a sudden some songs would
cause my ipod to reset. it was weird cuz i know they
play because i used to listen to them all the time on
my old 30 gig.
what i did was convert the songs that werent working
in the itunes "advanced- convert selection to aac"
and then they started to work..
First, thanks for the info! That did resolve the problem. But I'm still curious as to why this is happening. The challenge now is trying to identify the common denominator amongst the songs that are the culprit. Seems like they are all low quality, perhaps even MONO. Still my 4G 30GB used to play them just fine. Oh well, until then we have a good workaround. Thanks again!

  • Ipod Shuts down after song

    Hello all,
I got an iPod Nano 3d Gen for my birthday 2 months ago.
I uploaded songs on it, and a video or two.
I everything was fine untill one day the iPod had shutdown after a song.
First I thought it was just something that'd happen once, So I restarted it and selected a song.
But again, the iPod would shutdown after the song was done.
After that my iPod has not been working like it should be, always shutting down after a song was finished.
I followed the 5 steps to fix most problems (Restart, Reboot etc)
But the problem with that was that my computer did not see the iPod.
My iPod would say it was connected for about 2 seconds, and then it would shut down again.
The Computer Management window couldn't see it either.
I tried almost everything I think, and nothing worked.
    So my question is this,
Does anyone have the same problem?
Or does anyone how to fix an iPod with these problems?

Your nano is pausing playback when the screen goes dark (Either when it goes dark on its own or when you click the sleep/wake button). The reason for this is that it is not detecting your headset. You may be able to hear music, but the headset jack is not inserted enough for the nano to detect that it is there (or something is blocking the connection). Here are your three options:
Insert the headset jack harder. Most folks find that this solves their problem. If you can see ANY of the silver of the plug when it is inserted, it is NOT fully inserted. You should feel and hear a click" when it is fully inserted.
Clean out the crud in the headset port. If you have tried #1 and it just won't insert all the way, it is likely that you have crud in your headset jack. Shine a light in there. The entire inside of the jack is white, so if it looks dark down at the bottom, there is probably crud down there. You can try blowing it out or using canned air. Just understand that shoving anything else in there to clean it out will be taking your warranty into your own hands! However, I have cleaned mine out using whatever was handy and small enough to fit in there and so far so good. Your results may vary!
Take it to the Apple store. If you have really tried with 1 and 2 and it is still happening, then there might just be something up with your headset port or your headset jack. If it is the headset jack, you can look closely at that and be pretty sure if that is the problem. Try another headset to make sure. If you have worked all the way through to this point and it is still happening, it is time to take it to the Apple store.

  • When I try to use iMessage on my iPod touch 4 (ios6) the iPod shuts down and restarts

Every time I try to open my iMessage my iPod shuts down. I have a 4th gen iPod with ios6. I will attempt to open the app and it will either shut down and restart as soon as the white screen comes up or I will see my previous messages and try to open a thread then it will restart. I have tried restarting the phone as well as turning iMessage on as off. Has anybody else had this problem? What can I do?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Note this will delete messages currently on the iPod:
Go to settings>Messages>Send and Receive and sign out of Messages and sign back in.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • IPod shuts down, comes back, shuts down, etc...

I have looked on the board for this problem, and have found a few similarities, but none that actually match my case. So, here goes...
First of all, my iPod: he is a very old 20GB iPod, a gift from Christmas 2003, and I have been considering replacing him or his battery, but I'm not sure that replacing the battery will fix this problem and I'd really rather not shell out $400 when all I want is my same iPod only working (I've got no interest in getting a new color iPod that holds a bazillion songs and plays videos and mixes songs and predicts my future and can save the world and everything--I just want to listen to music, that's all).
Anyway, so the problem is as follows: my iPod worked fine for about two years, aside from some minor problems (for example, sometimes if I clicked on a song he would think for a few seconds and then move to the song after it--but all I'd have to do is go right back to the song I wanted to play, and there would be no problem). No real difficulties charging, holding a charge, going to sleep, waking up, etc.
Then, last summer, I joined the cross-country team, and wore him when I ran, and he started having more problems. I have a little blue iPod belt-pack that I wear when I run, and it's supposed to keep the iPod from bouncing out and crashing onto the floor, which it does. However, it does not keep him from bouncing, and I think this is what started everything. I have a certain playlist that I listen to when I run, and sometimes he'll finish one song and the bouncing will mess him up and he'll skip several songs and move to one towards the end of the list (and refuse to play the skipped ones, even if I click on them manually--he'll just skip right over them again). I'm fairly sure it's the bouncing because I have noticed that if I run more slowly and softly when he's finishing a song, it reduces the chance of him having a hissy-fit and skipping the next seven songs.
(I should probably note here that he does not always skip the same songs, and all of my music plays fine most of the time, so it's not a song problem.)
Anyway, shortly thereafter he started having battery problems when I ran--occasionally he'd crash in the middle of a run, and display his Angry!Battery! sign when I tried to turn him back on. Annoying, but he didn't seem to have problems any other time, so I'd let it slide.
A few weeks ago, however, he started having SERIOUS battery problems. I'd be listening to him when I was doing homework or reading or some other mundane activity that involves little to no real motion, and he'd suddenly shut down after about half an hour and display his Angry!Battery! sign at me when I tried to turn him back on.
So this went on, and I got very frustrated, blah blah blah, and then he started being a NEW kind of broken.
Now, he'll shut down with no warning (although I have noticed that it happens quite often when I am scrolling through a song--it's not nearly as frequent when I just listen to a song all the way through), but turn back on when I try to turn him on. The battery is displayed as empty, but it refills itself as he plays, until he suddenly gets mad and shuts down again. Sometimes, I can turn him back on, and he plays for a good amount of time; sometimes, I can turn him back on and he plays for about a minute and then dies; other times, there'll be an Angry!Battery! sign and I have to plug him in.
So, to recap my most current problem, because this post is getting long:
    -iPod shuts down randomly
-iPod turns back on, shows empty battery, but plays anyway and battery slowly refills
-iPod shuts down again after about half an hour
-iPod occasionally turns on and plays as normal, often for as long as an hour; if not, iPod either turns on and shuts down after a few seconds, or shows Angry!Battery! sign and refuses to turn on.
Also I should probably mention that my brother got an identical iPod for Christmas the same year, and has never run with his or really used it for anything except listening to music when he studies or drives (he has one of those car gadget things), and doesn't have the same problems.
I'm thinking it's a battery problem, but the fact that sometimes he'll shut down and then come back and play for his usual amount of time (remember, this is a 2003 iPod, so the battery has never been as powerful as the new ones), and also the fact that it happens most often when I am moving through a song, makes me wonder. Should I pay the $60 to replace the battery, or is it time to just get a new iPod? (I really miss running with music.)
    Thanks!
    -Brooke

It's not the tracks that are causing it to freeze up. It's random!
All these tracks have been on my iPod since day one and played fine and most of them are from iTMS anyway.
So your suggestions is not quite relevant.

  • IPod shuts down due to "low battery" even when fully recharged

    OK..
I got big problems with my iPod battery.
I've already sent my iPod to Apple once, but they returned it saying nothing is wrong and giving "helpful" tips about turning the backlight off in order to make the battery last longer..
Well, I sorta disagree about there not being any problem. And I did feel a bit insulted about the claim that my iPod is not malfunctioning as well as the hints about me being a retard who needs to be told that using the backlight continuously might have an affect on battery life.
(but in case my retardedness is to blame for all my problems with my iPod, please let me know. )
During he last 2 months or so, the iPod keeps shutting down due to "low battery" even though it's been connected to the USB port for, like, 20 hours straight.
Tried different ports and computers without any luck.
The recharging-icon is usually moving while connected to the computer, but I don't get the "battery is fully loaded" message (or icon?) anymore.
Sometimes when the iPod has shut itself down due to low battery, it can still be used for ~10 hours by turning it on/resetting multiple times. When that happens, the battery icon is at first "empty", but then bar suddenly goes to half full.
I also suspect that resetting it 7 times before plugging it into a USB-port helps. Occasionally.
No way to tell if there's 15 hours or 15 seconds life left in he battery. I just got got home from a 2 x 8,5 hour flight and the iPod shut down right after the first take-off So.. yeah.. I'm ****** off atm.:/
I've tried all the tricks I've found on the net (resetting, software updates etc.) but nothing helps.
Don't know if it could have any relevance, but it seems like the problem appears more often when playing audio books - long mp3 files, that is...
    Help, anyone? Pretty please?
    PC   Windows XP

I have the exact same problem. About 2 weeks before the end of my 1-year warranty, I contacted Apple about the problem. They sent a box with prepaid shipping (I paid for it) and I sent the iPOD back to Apple. Today, I checked the status of my repair and the screen reads:
    Step 1 - Request
    Product received (05-Apr-2006)
    Step 2 - Service
    No trouble found (11-Apr-2006)
    Step 3 - Return
    Original product shipped (11-Apr-2006)
I contacted Apple Customer Service and was told that they ran diagnostics and nothing was wrong with the unit. I asked them if it mattered that I noticed problems with the iPOD that they don't seem to see and they said no. They said the problem could be with my charger, but I told them that I recently lost my charger and had used several different chargers that work with other peoples iPODs just fine. I even left it to charge overnight and the next day I could barely play one song. The woman I spoke with told me that if I had any problems with the iPOD after it was returned to me, I would have to send it back (they would not provide the box) and pay $225 since it is no longer in warranty .
My problem is that the unit was in warranty when I sent it, they didn't fix it (they couldn't find this very obvious problem), and now it isn't in warranty. The only way I can listen to music is to plug it into an A/C outlet while it is playing. My other option is to buy another mp3 player.
Has anyone else had this problem? Have you found a solution? Thanks!

  • IPod shuts down when connected to iTunes

My fully charged iPod shuts down within 1 minute of connecting to iTunes. iTunes recognizes/reads the iPod until the iPod shuts down. I considered the battery but the iPod will play about 6 hours on a charge. This happened with the old iTunes software and also after I installed the new 7.0.2 yesterday.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is the software on the iPod up to date too?
Have you tried connecting via a different USB port?
Also, try resetting the iPod while it is connected to the computer...

  • Satellite Pro A10 shuts down on specific ocasions

    Hi !
I own a Satelite Pro A10 (the PSA15E). It's hdd stop working, the pc couldn't find it. So I bought a new one, a samsung with 160GB, IDE of course.
Now when I was installing windows, during the copying files part, it just shut down. When I boot it he says the boot file fails, so I'm assuming he shut down when he was transfering that important part.
If I run the cd again, he doesn't ask for format, or reinstall/repair, he just loads up some files and tries to start windows, and then shuts down.
Now this is where the tricky part comes in: the power led turns off and then on again really quick whenever he shuts down. I'm not using the battery (it's already dead too), and I'm using an universal AC adapter, a Kensigton one, 70W. I tried formating through an Ubuntu live cd, with no luck, because when I choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" he stops a bit like he's thinking, then when he's about to leave the menu and do something, he instead shuts down.
My only guess is that this laptop doesn't want me anymore :(
I could really use some help, cause I just spent some 50 on an HDD for him and It's the only laptop I have. I don't think it's a matter of temperature because he just shuts down at specific times, on some specific choices. If I just let him hang there on the menu (the Ubuntu live CD one) he doesn't shut down. Only when I want him to go further.
Any help/response is greatly appreciated, and if I take a bit too long to answer is because I only have acess to internet at work now.
    Thank you very much,
    Ricardo Rebelo

Hi and sorry for not answering before.
The laptop is fine. I did cleaned the vents and even applied new thermal grease. But the real problem was the ac adaptor. It's a kingston universal one and it has to be laid flat on the ground, or else it will eventually turn of the laptop. My laptop has no battery so I have to turn ac adaptor all the time. Thanks for all the replies and again sorry for not being able to answer as fast as I could.

  • Ipod shuts down on some podcasts

I have recently purchased a new ipod, 80gb, and I love it. I have upgraded from the 60gb. Only problem is that on some podcasts, not all, when I go into the podcast the ipod shuts down and I am unable to play the podcast. After a few seconds the apple comes on the screen. You can tell that something is going on with the ipod and a few seconds later the menu comes back up. This is really annoying. I have tried to remedy this by unsubscribing, deleting the podcast and subscribing again. Didn't work. Can anyone help me with this?

  • Why did my ipod shut down when it was fuly charged.

my ipod shut down when it had changed all night.

I buy a new cd yesterday. I went home to go on my computer hook up my Ipod to put new music on it. I did this all before. Usually went like a piece of cake. When I did it yesterday my Ipod after I put new music on it. My Ipod went not bright out. I didn't see it was okay to disconnected. Usually I did it will be light up. My Ipod was so dark I couldn't see the okay to disconnected. Can someone help why it's acting like that?

  • Ipod Shuts Down on it's own upon selection of a song.

For some reason, My ipod (30 gb 5th gen) which I just bought a couple weeks ago keeps shutting down when I select a song to play. It loads the song, Gets ready to play it, but then vibrates, shuts itself off and displays the Apple logo. I thought this was a fluke or it was because I hadn't updated my Itunes program on my PC. Both of these do not check out, and it continues to shut off automatically when I select a certain song. Note: This is not every song, nor a specific album. I tried to skip it and move on, and it played one song, then had another song with the same error. I moved on to the next, and had a string of at least ten where the error did not occur, so I didn't know what to think so I got on here. I hope there are some nuts out there with nothing better to do than answer this question, because I hate mysteries and waiting, and this is doing both. It says feel free to call customer support all over this dang site, but never once offers the **** number.

I think I got it. I searched shut down on here and someone somewhere said to shut off EQ. That seems to have done the trick. If you know the reason behind this, I would be glad to hear it. It sure had me baffled this afternoon...
