IPod Skipping Purchased Music Fixed!....Sort of

See my post over at http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1651307#post1651307
Hopefully this will help others. Any thoughts?

Burning all my purchased music onto CDs then reuploading it onto iTunes is not a valid fix.
I'm still having the intermittent playing problem. This problem was happening before I updated to iTunes 5 and before I installed the most recent (Sept. 6) update for iPod.
What's going on? I'm not the only one having this problem yet there seems to be no response from Apple as to how to fix it.

  • Frustration setting in!  G4 iPod skips purchased music (tried reset, etc.)

    Hi All -
I've been a Mac guy since System 7. I got the iPod knowing that it would "just work" like all things Mac. I've purchased music through iTunes because it's the right thing to do, but I'm beginning to get frustrated with a problem I'm having playing purchased music. I do not want to have to update my iPod to correct the problem everytime it occurs (I've spent a lot of time trying to fix the problem), I won't purchase a new iPod to fix it (all other functions work great), and I'm considering different sources for online music since there doesn't seem to be a problem with other sources (friends think I'm crazy for paying as it is). PLEASE HELP! Someone knows the answer. Here's your chance to prove yourself a god!
I seem to have a common problem. My G4 (20G) iPod will skip purchased (iTunes) music after the iPod turns off. When it restarts (Apple displays on the screen), all purchased music skips. The titles are displayed, but it runs through all purchased titles without playing.
I've tried the common fixes - reset the iPod, authorized and de-authorized the computer on iTunes, re-installed the library and all other methods provided in discussions and support. Since the titles are displayed and occurs only after the iPod restarts, I'm assuming that there is a problem with permissions that should have been corrected with the iPod reset or authorize/reinstall solutions. Nothing is helping. Just to state the obvious, all software is up to date.
Can some kind person provide a fix? It seems to be happening to a lot of folks, but I can't seem to find anything that helps.
    Thanks!

I had the problem where my purchased songs would be skipped over when I attempted to play them on my iPod, described perfectly in article 303854 "iPod does not play content purchased from the iTunes Store." However, after following all the steps in that article the problem still happened, until...
I spoke with an iPod support representative who knew that in some cases the normal iPod Restore steps don't work unless the iPod is put in "Disk Mode" first. We put my iPod in Disk Mode then performed the Restore steps, and the problem went away--purchased songs played normally.
For instructions to put an iPod in disk mode, see article 93651 "Putting iPod into Disk Mode":
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
So, if your purchased songs are skipped over and if the steps in article 303854 don't solve your problem, consider putting your iPod in Disk Mode first then performing the Restore steps again.
    Good luck.

  • Another Ipod Problem - Purchased Music wont play

I just recently recieved my fifth repaired Ipod in a year and a halves time, and now I have another problem. I loaded all of my iTunes songs to my iPod, but all of my purchased music will not play, it just skips over them to the next song. What is going on?
Thank you for your help in advance.

Could you share this again? I have looked for answers to this issue in multiple threads and have yet to find anything that works. All the latest stuff, resync, etc. and the purchased music still won't play after some interval of time. It plays fine for a while then it just skips through the titles.
Is it a time thing or something you can set?
    Thx for any insight.

  • I can't sync my ipod with purchased music on a different computer

I purchased music on a new computer that I have allowed access to for my ipod but now because my library is on my other computer it says this computer is not synced to my ipod so now I can't even sync my purchased music unless I want to erase all of the music on my ipod.  Then if I try to put it back on, all of my songs are on my old computer and it won't let me sync two computers at a time.  Not happy.

  • Bought new iPod - will purchased music be OK

My daughter is on her third iPod and she has a large purchased music collection. I know that iTunes purchased music is OK for up to 5 authorized computers - but what about iPods? Is there a limit to the number of times that she can upgrade the music to a new iPod? I want to make sure that I don't have to do something on the old one (like you have to deauthorize a computer before trashing it) before loading up the new one.
In a similar vein - I plan on taking her old one loading my music onto it - again - I know that my music on my iTunes will overwrite the entire thing - but will my purchased music be OK on 2 iPods that are both in use?
    Thanks.

There is no limit to the number of iPods you can transfer music purchased from the iTunes Store to.

  • Ipod and Purchased Music

recently some of my files went missing, and some of them are music i have purchased from itunes, yet they are still on my ipod, is there a way to get them off the ipod onto my hard drive again?

The transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Mini skips purchase music from iTunes 6

I've read over some other topics but nothing has been helpful, so here's my issue. I downloaded iTunes 6 and transferred songs I purchased to my Mini. When I try to play the songs, the Mini just skips it and goes on to the next song. Software is 1.4 (up to date). I tried deleted the songs and adding them again -- same result.
It's a new mini, so I'm not sure why this has happened.
    Any suggestions?

Hi: I had this problem with my Mac/Mini, purchased song played fine on computer, looked like it copied to Mini, but kept getting skipped when I disconnected iPod. I tried erasing the song from my Mini, resetting, and recopying from iTunes but the problem remained.
I filled out a complaint form and Apple sent me another copy of the song. I downloaded it to my computer, copied to the Mini, and it worked fine when I disconnected the iPod. The second time, I payed more attention to everything and noticed that when disconnecting the iPod, synching took longer than it had previously, and would stop and start before fully completing. I probably disconnected the iPod too early when I was having the probelm.
Apple has since released a new version of iTunes (6.0.1) that may address synching speed or continuity. Hope this helped!

  • Ipod skips purchased songs

my ipod keeps skipping the songs i purchased on itunes, i've tried everthing but it wont work, help

I had no such problems until i received a replacement ipod for mine that developed a fault its absolutely rediculous as this keeps happening even after resetting and de authorising. Gradually this happened more and more regularly SO I HAVE GIVEN UP USING THE IPOD NOW.
Interestingly if you have one that is in warranty and bought in the uk i would return it as it is clearly not fit for the purpose it was purchased as it is marketed with itunes. Incidentaly you will probably get no help from apple.

  • Purchased music skips after a few days

My iPod skips my iTunes' purchased music after a few days. When I connect my iPod to the iMac again the songs are back on my iPod but only for a couple of days.
Can some of you help me out to solve this problem?

The same thing happens to me, and unfortunately, it almost always seems to happen at the worst times (getting on a long plane flight.)
I've done a lot of research on this topic in the Apple Discussions groups, and have tried all the suggested remedies:
    (1) Re-setting ipod
    (2) Re-loading music
    (3) Updating firmware, software
Net/net, when you update your iPod, and connect to iTunes, or do any of above, it will work for a little while, and then it will just start skipping purchased music again.
I believe this must be result of defective players, or bug in some of players, as not everyone has this problem (my wife's works fine) - but based on number of comments re. this problem I see on this forum, many people do, and Apple should offer exchange.

  • IPOD skips Itunes Purchased Music

If someone else has this problem and has fixed it please let me know!!
I am on my second IPOD mini. This one is having the same problem so I have deduced that it is in my ITUNES. I have only purchased music from ITUNES. The problem is that everytime I update my ipod it works about 2 or 3 uses then all of the purchased musics starts skipping and it will only play songs that are from a CD. I don't understand? Help if you can.!

Please someone - It has been 5 days since I asked Itunes for an answer and of course gotten no response.

  • IPod died trying to fix purchased music sync issue.

I've tried everything except to do a restore of my OS to sync my click wheel Ipod to my purchased music. I have this problem since Itunes 5.0 was released. It was working fine since then. The last thing I did did was to update my Itunes to 6.0.1 and install the latest IPod updater (10-12). Well, after I tried to install the updater and every previous updater after that (for the fifth time). My Quicksilver G4 froze. I restarted and disconnected my Ipod. Now my IPod is unresponsive. No display. It won't charge and I can not reset. It is just dead. Anything I can do besides sending it for repair for $249? Thanks for any help.

No. Once you download the music, it is yours and you are responsible for backing it up.
You did not maintain a back up of your music?
From Itunes Store terms of service:
" PRODUCTS CAN ONLY BE DOWNLOADED ONCE; AFTER BEING DOWNLOADED, THEY CANNOT BE REPLACED IF LOST FOR ANY REASON. YOU SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BACKING UP YOUR OWN SYSTEM, INCLUDING ANY PRODUCTS PURCHASED OR RENTED FROM THE ITUNES STORE THAT ARE STORED IN YOUR SYSTEM."

  • Purchased music won't play on ipod!  Help!

    Hi,
I've posted this before, but not found a good response that solves the problem. Thought I'd try again - any help would be appreciated.
My original ipod died just b/4 the warranty expired, so I got a new one from the apple store. Now, my ipod will not always play music I've purchased from the itunes store. There are two "fixes" I've found for this. The first is to plug my ipod into my computer and let it update. This seems to restore the files (?) but only works for a day or two, then the ipod skips right over the purchased files. The song file info (artist, song title, album, etc...) pops up on the screen for a second or two, but then goes right to the next file.
A better fix was to drag the "itunes music" folder from the finder into the library view of itunes on my desktop. This seemed to be a better "update" and worked for several months, but I recently noticed that once again, my ipod is simply skipping over any purchased music.
As you can imagine, this is quite frustrating, and also, since I've purchased a fair amount of music from itunes that I can't reliably listen to, very expensive!
I've noticed that in my "itunes music" folder in the finder of my computer any purchased music has the file extension ".m4p" whereas any music that I have ripped from a CD that I already owned has the file extension ".m4a". Is it possible that this has something to do with it?
My guess is that because I'm on my second ipod, the songs are protected somehow so that they "lock" after a certain amount of time if the file doesn't recognize the ipod device? Does this make sense? Does apple protect these files so that you can't permanently share them with other peoples' ipods? That would seem to be a fair thing, but I can't listen to them on my own ipod! I've been to the local apple store several times, and they have no idea what's going on.
I have a mac G4, and a 5th gen ipod (20G). All the software updates are current.
Again, any help would be appreciated.

"oh, and i also downloaded the free song of the week to see if downloading something new would help it out. nope."
Into a new user account with a separate iTunes library? That's the idea.
    1. Deauthorize the computer.
    2. Create a new user in the system.
    3. Download the free song of the week from the iTMS in the new user account.
    4. Play the song in that user account to authorize again.
    5. Restore the iPod (using the iPod updater) in the new user account.
    6. Sync just the free song of the week and see if it plays on the iPod.
If it does, you appear to have a corrupted iTunes library file, and you should recreate the iTunes library file in your normal user account, and then sync your music back to the iPod and all should be well.

  • Purchased music won't play on ipod 5g 60gb - need help!

    hello everyone,
i've been looking for help all over the internet for hours and hours, and i have yet to find an answer. i wrote the whole sequence of events down so everyone will know which troubleshooting steps i have already gone through.
i have an ipod video, 5g, 60gb that i got in december. it's been great, up until i needed to upgrade my operating system to windows xp pro (from xp home edition). i backed up everything onto dvds, proceeded to install the new os (even gave my music it's own partition, now it feels all special and lovely and whatnot ), and reloaded itunes, got my music back on like before. then, i proceeded to install my ipod software, got the latest updates (version 1.1.1 for ipod video), and this is where i ran into problems.
prior to using itunes to install my music, i noticed a few glitches with version 1.1.1 of the ipod updater. some of my music files would show the correct artwork when normally playing the music, but if i cycled through to the larger picture of the album artwork, almost every item on my ipod showed a picture of a podcast i am subscribed to. seeing i've spent hours putting in correct artwork for thousands of songs, this irked me.
after getting all my music straight on my computer and made any changes i needed to make, i hooked my ipod up and updated with itunes. due to the new installation of windows, it had to wipe everything, and then redownload everything to my ipod.
i then noticed that not only my artwork was still screwy, but my purchased music didn't play any longer either. all of the purchased songs and videos skip through after about a couple seconds, but i did notice it did increase my play counts upon further updates. the songs play fine on my computer, no issues. and i have tried the deauthorize/reauthorize process as well, with no success.
after researching this issue a bit, i decided to follow the 5 r's. even the "restore" r, and then reloaded everything back on my ipod. now, my artwork is back like normal, which i am happy about. however, purchased music still has the same behavior. even gave the deauthorize/reauthorize process another whirl. while i could easily burn those songs to a cd and then rip them to mp3 to make them play, this still wouldn't fix my purchased video issues, leaving me right back at square one.
oh, and i also downloaded the free song of the week to see if downloading something new would help it out. nope.
i also downloaded anapod explorer to see if that would give any light onto the situation. it shows the purchased files are on my ipod, but when i disconnect from the program, it tells me "you must download a file from iTMS in order to play protected music," a step which i had already done with the free song of the week.
i'm just wondering if i should try downgrading my ipod firmware, if anyone has had the same problems, or if anyone could offer any helpful advice? i would greatly appreciate it!

  • IPod won't play purchased music after upgrading.....

    Help -
My boss has the 30g video IPod. He has upgraded his Itunes software to 7.0 and also upgraded his IPod to 1.2 (whatever the newest version is). He is not having the problems I have seen others are having but the issue he is having is that his IPod will not play his purchased music.
I did find this article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303854) on the website and have tried everything it suggests to fix it. All the software is up-to-date, we have deauthorized and reauthorized his computer, and I have followed the instructions to recreate the Itunes Library. Still the songs won't play - he can navigate to the folder of purchased music on the IPod and it will let him hit play but it will just display the song and album cover and then keep skipping to the next song - never actually playing the song.
Can anyone please give me some advice for what else to try? If all else fails he would like to just restore his IPod and go back to ITunes 6.0. I tried this by uninstalling ITunes 7 and then installing 6 again but when I open 6 it says it can not be opened because the library was created by a newer version of ITunes. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have this exact same problem since I bought my new 80GB iPod.
All purchased songs play fine in iTunes on my Mac but they just skip past each track when I try to play on my iPod. As mentioned above I have tried the advice Apple give and have restored my iPod and recreated library but I still have the same problems.
