IPod skips song when I change song.... normal?

Hi I just got an iPod today and was wondering if this was normal: I loaded my itunes library into my ipod, but when I change songs the hard drive will hum for about 15 seconds. After 15 seconds it will skip the song it was searching for and just go to a new one. I was wondering if this is normal and if not, is there a solution to this?
This probably happens about 50% of the time which is quite a nuisance.

I actually found this topic which is the same problem I have just in case other people are having this.... Seems like no solution yet though

  • IPod skips songs for no reason

My ipod skips songs and I do not know why or how to stop it. I have several playlists and it does it on all of them. I've deleted all the songs and re-installed them and have reset the ipod several times and this has not helped. Can anyone help me?

Diana - seems we are having the same problem. I've done everything you have. And I have gone to the Apple store to have them check. they tried to tell me that it's a Windows issue. I don't buy it. My next step is to send it in to Apple and have them send me a new one (I'm still w/in warranty)
The other thing my Pod does is after it skips a song, it either turns off or goes back to the "Music" menu. Does that sound familiar to you?
    Anyone else with suggestions??!!

  • Ipod Skipping Songs

I bought a new 80 GB iPod classic back in January, and I noticed that when I'm listening to it on shuffle, it might get to a song, wait a few seconds and then skip the song. I also tried playing an album on my iPod and it skipped every song. These songs work just fine on iTunes, and the album I played was bought brand new, and has always worked otherwise. Does anyone else have this problem? Should I trade my iPod in for a new one?
    Thanks.

Have you tried encoding at different speeds?
    If not try this:
First off check the original encoding speed. This can be done by selecting the glitched song, right clicking and choosing the "Get Info" option and the bit-rate (encoding speed) will be in the summary tab. After you check the current encoding speed the settings for importing music into iTunes may need to be changed. You can change these by going into the "Edit > Preferences ~ Advanced tab > Importing tab" once here simply change the box labeled "Import Using" from "AAC Encoder" to "MP3 Encoder". Now all that needs to be done is to change the bit-rate. Choose one of the bit-rates from the "Setting" box that is different from the current bit-rate of the skipping song. Once the setting is chosen click "Ok" and then go to the "Advanced" menu and there should be an option to "Convert Selection to MP3". Now it is as simple as selecting the affected song and then going into the advanced menu and choosing the "Convert Selection to MP3" option to fix your glitched tunes! Every song that is converted using this will be encoded with the bit-rate chosen in the earlier stages.
Hopefully this helps, good luck re-encoding =)

  • Groan... iPod skipping songs and other things..

    Greetings,
My iPOD is a year old today,I have the "old and archaic" 20GB iPods. Recently i've noticed that my iPod has started skipping songs, that is I select a song to be played and the song features comes up, but then it skips forward to the song ahead. Also this past weekend, when I tried to play my IPOD and I turned it on.. I got an message that says www.apple.com/ipod/support...Also for some reason when I press play the pause sign and the lock feature is still on my iPOD.
This is only recently, after I got the last iPOD update that I seem to be having problems. A bit ironic, I think.
Anyway, i'd be greatful for some help.
    Thanks

Hi! Had problems on the iTunes. My iPod didnt show up and the technical help person from the phone service told me to restore it. That was just a week after I bought it... It's the first time I have an iPod. Just don't know what's normal or not. Can't imagine why I have all the problems if I'm following the "rules" if you know what I mean. Love the iPod but I'm kind of disappointed by all the problems...

  • Classic 20gb Ipod - Skipping songs

Recently, my 20 GB iPod classic has started skipping songs randomly. For example, when I try to play a playlist or album, it will skip through the songs one by one until the playlist/album is completed, without actually playing any of the songs. Has anyone had a similar problem and had success in fixing this? Or is my iPod shot and it is time to get a new one? Thanks in advance.

The songs on the ipod are damaged. Tyr restoring it with the latest ipod updater, more on restoring can be found here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983

  • Major problem. ipod skipping songs continuously

I have a refurbished 160 gig ipod classic, purchased within the last month or so. I was listening on shuffle at work today, it suddenly started freezing at 0:00 of a song. So I closed the playlist and shuffled again, all was well. Well a while later, it started doing it again, only this time it freezes on 0:00 for a while, then skips to the next song. It's not just certain songs. If I close out the playlist and start over it will play for a while... but it will start doing it again. Is this a firmware issue, or is the device defective? Thanks

forgot to mention that when it's skipping songs, the hard drive continuously makes a clicking noise. If i'm understanding this right, the hard drive must be going out, but what's weird is songs will play if I close out and start again, but only for a while....
Also, could someone tell me how to get the ball rolling, as far as sending this thing back?

  • Ipod skips songs

    Hello,
Lately my Ipod , 5thG 60 Gb, is skipping songs when played on my Ipod. It skips songs, some after a few seconds others after a few minutes. When i play the same songs in my itunes library they play fine. I have about 6300 songs on my ipod and i estimate that about 20% of the songs are skipping. It never done this before. I've read al lot of posting in this forum about skipping songs on the i pod and tried all the solutions that were given. But nothing helped. Listening to a song and then all of a sudden it skips to the next is getting more and more annoying. I've been to the apple store in my hometown and they couldn't give me a solution. They said it is a softwareproblem. Well if it is and i hope it is i expect Apple either having a solution for this problem or developing one. I paid good money for my Ipod so i may expect it to play as it should.
As said i've read a lot of pages in the discussionforums and saw that this problem is already going on for a long time. So Apple please give me a solution (and don't tell me to buy a new ipod) for this problem. And please dont answer that the Ipod should be reset or restored (to factory settings) because i've done that and it didn't solve the problem.

hello,my ipod does something like that too,but i can start it and it will skip all songs, but stops at pod casts, and for some reason my pc is missing about 2000 songs (and its never been hooked up to anyother computer) that my ipod does have, i talked to a apple repair store and they didnt know much about the ipods, the thought i should reset my ipod...and loose all of my music... any BETTER ideas?

  • Ipod skips song while walking

Brand new Ipod Nano. Love it but when I walk I carry the Ipod in my pant pocket and it keeps on skipping songs, very frustrating. What can I do to stop that from happening?

Thanks for the answer. I had done that and it still skips. Should I reset the whole thing? Would that help?

  • Ipod skipping songs and getting stuck

my ipod ive had for about a year
after about four months of its purchase though it started having problems, it would skip songs half way and sometimes not even play some of them.
    whats the problem?
    20GB ipod   Windows XP

I have also been having a similar problem. I have the non-U2 version/20G with the click wheel and have had it for a little over a year. I primarily use my iPod in my car with a Griffin iTrip to play through an FM station. I realized recently, however, that I had not heard some of my favorite songs lately (all purchased music).
After a closer look, the iPod is skipping most of my purchased music, both when using the iTrip and my headphones. Once I select a song, it will shuffle through the entire folder or eventually land on a song and play it.
I was worried that the drive might be on its way out, which is why I'm here. I found a previous post where the answer was that there might be an issue with the accounts (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1938283#1938283) and authorization/deauthorization. I have definitely had experience with both, as I moved my iTunes acct to my laptop from my desktop. However, the move was made months ago and my iPod only stopped working a few weeks ago. Since the move, I have connected the iPod to iTunes on the laptop many times, though I have not connected since for several weeks.
Just a few minutes ago, I reconnected the iPod and played some of the songs in question from my iPod's folders and they worked fine. I have since disconnected the pod and tested it again, and it works fine with the headphones as well.
After this, my only conclusion is that I may need to upgrade to a fancy/shiny new model if the problem persists.
Does anyone know what may be causing the issue?

  • How about TWO ipods skipping songs at random

I am yet to read a definitive answer to this problem:
    you all know it:
my fiancees fifth gen ipod is skipping parts or entire songs... She did not have this problem on the third gen ipod.
she ALSO has an ipod shuffle... the songs are now doing the same thing on the shuffle...
I am not sure how the files could have become corrupted spontaneously..
we are running the latest versions of itunes and the latest software on the ipod.
will try restoring both ipods do anything?
how about reinstalling itunes? maybe something happened when it tried the catalog the music??
    what are your thoughts?

It appears that issue is with the album you purchased from iTunes Store.   I believe you should contact the iTunes Store and let them know about the skipping songs.  Tell the store staff that the songs are skipping on both iTunes & iPod.

  • Ipods skip songs when synced

I am having issues. I sync all four ipods to itunes and songs skip whether they are bought on itunes or loaded from disc. Most all skip how can this be resolved. I am currently running Vista. I really would like some help it is driving me nuts.

I have exactly the same problem. Three of my older Ipods play all songs without problem. My brand new Nano 4G 16 GB skips quite a few songs. Most of them have been riped from CD. I saw in other forums, that this is not an uncomon problem. I called Apple Support today and was told that most likely this is a hardware problem. I was told to mail my Nano to Apple which I will do.

  • Ipod skips songs and / or freezes, won't play any song

Listening to my ipod I skipped to next track, but no sound came. Looking at display I noticed that the ipod had skipped about twenty tracks. Tried going back to track I wanted to play but ipod wouldn't play it - time display stuck at 0.00 for a few mins then skipped to next track, same problem. Went to completely different track - same problem.
Checked on itunes - all songs played fine, both those listed under my home hard drive, and those listed under the ipod's drive on itunes.
Resynched ipod - same problem - initially one or two songs would play, but when trying to play the specific track I first tried, it would skip through the next twenty or so tracks then stop playing anything.
Tried soft reset - same problem.
Tried restoring to factory settings - same problem.
Took to apple store genius bar - they made no attempt to work out what was going wrong, just replaced ipod as it was still under warranty. Got home and resynched all songs - same problem!
This suggests it is a problem with the song files, but I don't understand why they play fine on itunes. Also, the file type (mp3), bit rate, sample rate, file size, etc is exactly the same in both locations.
Have tried all troubleshooting tips on this site, and all software is latest version.
    Any ideas?

    Good night, Chris.
Well, it may have lots of reasons: changing files from original folders, uninstall/install codecs in other programs, errors on iTunes Sync service, deleted .dll's, viruses and etc...
To easier the work for you, you can do it in all your iTunes library or make a backup of your files and reinstall iTunes (enjoy to update it, if you haven't yet).
Try "consolidate files" also, it can avoid that iTunes search from the files in wrong places, and automatically organize your .mp3/.aac files.
In a last tool, try to change the iTunes import preferences.
Once you are in a high step level, give a glance on this things on:

and give a special look to this scripts:

  • Ipod skipping songs after a few seconds

I have been having problems with playing certain songs on my new 80GB ipod classic (all ripped from CDs, not purchased or downloaded).
The songs will skip to the next song after anything from right at the beginning of the song to 30 seconds in. If I go back, I can fast forward past the point it skips, and it will play to the end.
I have already tried deleting the songs from my library and re-importing, restoring my ipod with the latest software and checking that the stop time on the song is correct. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me?
    Thanks

I have a similar issue, the only difference being that when I fast forward it will not continue to play, only again, skip to the next song.
After some research I have found that the only thing that seems to work for me is to convert my files to MP3 using the "convert to MP3" function found in iTunes. All my songs are already in MP3, but the reason this works is due to the encoding. If the encoding is unknown, it seems more often than not my iPod will skip those tracks. When you convert it to mp3 using iTunes it changes the encoding to some kind of iTunes encoding.
This makes me VERY angry. There is no way I have found to sort the items by their encoding as to convert only the problematic ones. Also, when you convert it changes the bit rate to read what ever your rip settigs are. This ***** because I plan on reripping some of my CDs that I ripped years ago at a low bit rate. If I convert to MP3 I cannot search my library to see which ones were ripped at the lower rate.
It also creates a duplicate of the audio file, which means I will not have enough space on my hard drive to compensate for over 12000 duplicated at a higher or equivilant bit rate.
