Ipod software update screwed my Ipod up.
I went into settings, then the "general" section. When I went to get the software update, the screen went immeaditatly blank. It is also not registering onto my computer.
Try:
- A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod
To allow a restore you may have to place the iPod in Recovery mode.
Also, if you can't turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try a reset, and restore.

Problem with new iPod software update and Robi DAB radio
There seems to be a compatability issue between my iPod Classic and my Robi DAB radio attachment. The DAB radio was working just fine until last week, when I downloaded the latest iPod software updates. Since then, the Robi works fine when it is used as a remote control for the iPod, but when it is used in radio mode, the iPod shuts down after a few minutes (as though it does not recognise that the radio is still attached, and thinks that there is no activity) and the Robi closes down too (due to lack of battery power when the iPod is no longer on). It could be a coincidence, but my guess is that the iPod updates are causing a problem.
I have tried to remove the new software updates from the iPod, ie I deleted the latest updates from the iPod software updates file (C/Documents and Settings/user name/Application data/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPod Software updates), unchecked the box labelled "automatically check for software updates", and then tried to restore the iPod using the old software. At that point, a message from iTunes appeared, to the effect that it could not go any further due to no internet connection. I could not find any way of restoring the iPod without letting iTunes download the current sortware updates.
So the question is, does anyone else have a similar compatability problem (with the Robi or anything else) and how can I get the iPod to run on the previous software?
I would be very grateful for any advice, as this is a very frustrating problem.

Message was edited by: Sue Marsh1The good news is that I removed the most recent iPod software update, restored the iPod (ie returned it to factory settings and reloaded all 14500 songs) and now I am really pleased to say that the iPod and the Robi are working together again in harmony, which is a huge relief.
Since I had inadvertently deleted the previous version of the iPod software from my PC, I had to download the files from here;

I have contacted Roberts Radio about this problem. The recent 1.1 software update must be even more frustrating for them, since they have sold lots of Robi radios.

IPod Software Updater application???
Okay. I got an ipod yesterday for my birhtday and of course it has to screw up.
I downloaded Itunes with the software i got with the iPod. I put about 7 cds on it. I just wanted to see if it was working so i plugged my iPod in and a little error box popped up and says "Itunes cannot read the contents of the iPod (IPOD). Use the iPod software updater application to restore the ipod to factory settings". What the heck do i do? I cant get any music on my iPod.

I plug in my iPod to charge from my computer and it syncs with my iTunes, but I've been getting a message that a list of 13 of my apps cannot be loaded onto my iPod because it doesn't have the latest software to support them. I have done all the software updates for my iPod and iTunes says it is completed up-to-date. Do I need to delete the apps and redownload them or what?
Any help is appreciated! Thanks.ok well like lllaass said, most apps require 4.3 or later iOS software. chances are since the apps worked before, the apps themselves got updated and will no longer work with your software version.

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw. -
My ipod needs to be restore and I get a error message saying :ipod software update server coud not be contacted.
Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then tap Settings > General > Software Update
No data is lost due to a reset. -
When I was updating my child's ipod touch with itunes....it put the ipod in recovery mode and said I would need to restore and then update....which was my only option to choose, so when I chose restore & update....after going thru it seemed the process, then a window came up that stated the ipod couldn't be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable and to try again. Ok so I reset my ipod touch 4th gen and it got stuck on the apple logo screen and holding down the buttons just made it turn off for a few seconds and go straight back onto the logo screen, nothing was happening with it connecting to itunes either. But I held the home and the power button down at the same time while connected to my laptop and then when the logo reappeard I released the power button and it came up with with the itunes logo and the usb logo. It then allowed me to select restore on itunes which I did but a box popped up saying "The ipod software update server could not be contacted. make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." Please help.

I got a new ipod touch for Christmas.
Today I was going to put music on it, i was told there was updates.
So I went ahead to do them.
My Ipod is stuck on the screen with the usb cord pointing to the itunes logo.
In Itunes i'm told :
Itunes has dected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes.
Turning the ipod off - the same screen appears when it's back on.
When I click restore ipod and after restore and update is clicked ; Extracting software loads up at the top.
When its done this is the message I get:
The iPod 'iPod' cannot be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.
I've been looking up trying to figure it out myself and have read making sure a setting in Lan Settings in Internet Properties has ; Automatically detect settings checked. I still get the same ipod message.
I've tried holding the power and home key to turn it off, then powering it back on. But that doesn't work.
I installed itunes today, so its up to date - I checked.
I don't know what else to do.
Can someone help me out, please? :}

I was attempting to sync my iPod Classic and received a message saying:
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
I did this and received this message:

I have powered my iPod off (holding down menu & toggle) several times and I have quit iTunes and opened it again to see if this would fix the problem but I always get the same error messages listed above.
Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this problem?

If you are using Norton or McAfee AV, I would try temporarily disabling them to see if that helps the situation as well.

When I was trying to update software on my 4th generation Ipod Touch, the screen froze with the 'connect to Itunes' image (i.e. the Itunes logo and the USB). The screen has been frozen that way since and consequently, I have tried to restore my Ipod.
I have uninstalled and installed the latest update of Itunes; updated Windows; re-started my computer numerous times and tried holding the power off/home buttons down together. When Itunes loads, I always get the option of restoring my Ipod however once it has finished extracting software, it says "it cannot be restored at this time because the Ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable".
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone can provide any help in terms of what to do as I am really stuck :/

My daughter forgot her passcode. Her iPod Touch 4gen is disabled. I've tried everything I've read online. I get to the "Restore" part on iTunes and then I get the message, "The iPod Software update server could not be contacted. I have iTunes 10.4 and an iPod touch. I have always had trouble with synching my iPod.
Right now, iTunes will not connect to the iTunes store. When I try to synch my iPod touch, it gets stuck in "Step 2: Backing Up," and the bar loads forever. I've left it alone for several hours and it has not made any progress. When I try to restore the iPod, or update it, iTunes gives me an error message that it "Cannot connect to the iPod software update server. This has happened despite being connected to the internet, on both my school network and my home network.
I've tried messing with the hosts file in the System32/etc. folder as the website instructed on the apple website, but that did not solve the problem.
Recently, several parts of audiobooks I have have also become unplayable on my iPod, despite being able to be played on iTunes. The parts are listed but are grey and cannot be selected.
I recently copied a bunch of audiobooks via flash drive from my sister's computer to my iTunes - could this be part of the problem? They were from an Audible account that I don't share.

Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes, Sync and see if it is working now.
