IPod Software updater in iTunes 7.0 wont Update my iPod
Every time I try to update my iPod's software from 1.1 to 1.2 using the embedded updater in 7.0, I get a message saying that the update cant be completed because the iPod is in use by another program. I tried deselecting the Disk Use option but it's greyed out! I've also tried closing iTuneshelper.exe and iPodservice.exe - but no use- Please Help...

I'm having a similar problem, but it says that it cannot update my ipod because I am not connected to the internet.

About 2 days ago, when I connected my iPod to my pc (iTunes), it said there were some software updates for my iPod so I downloaded them and the iPod rebooted itself. Once it came back up, my iPod showed up in iTunes under "devices" on the left hand sidebar. I got the registration page - I usually click register later, but nothing happened this time. It didn't bring me into my iPod. So I tried to Register. I could get so far, then it asked if I wanted some free movie or something, I said NO THANKS, CONTINUE, but nothing happened. I wasn't registered AND I couldn't access my iPod. I can see my iPod under My Computer. I can see "sandra's iPod" uder devices in iTunes. BUT, I can't get to the content when connected to iTunes. All of my stuff is there on the iPod. I can play my iPod when it's not connected to iTunes - but I can't see the content, manipulate playlists, delete songs, etc. when connected to iTunes. I am almost positive this is a result of the latest software updates to the iPod. I have not updated iTunes - I didn't want to and compound the problem. I'm not a techy person - so please be gentle! You cannot update it if you can't get the latest version of iTunes. Actually, the latest version of iTunes will run in XP if you have Service Pack 2. Also, you posted in the iPad forum, and your profile shows you have an iPad, but in your post, you say it is an iPod. Is it an iPad or an iPod?

When I was updating my child's ipod touch with itunes....it put the ipod in recovery mode and said I would need to restore and then update....which was my only option to choose, so when I chose restore & update....after going thru it seemed the process, then a window came up that stated the ipod couldn't be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable and to try again. After trying this several times unsuccessfuly and going thru the steps on the help section, the ipod is still not able to restore & update, thus we can't access anything on our very new ipod touch and I am very frustrated, can't afford any Apple support tech time. PLEASE HELP!!

When I want to get an app, an error message comes up saying I need 3.0 software update. How do I get my ipod updated in itunes, when itunes says my ipod is already updated?
OR if I cannot update to software 3.0, how can I find apps that will work just for my ipod touch?It sounds like you have a 1G iPod Touch, in which case you can only upgrade to iOS version 3.1. Here is a link to purchase the update.

itunes says that the version of software on my ipod touch 3rd gen is up to date, but IOS 5 is avaliable. I have checked for software updates for days but it keeps saying that 4.2.1 is the current version. Why cant i get IOS 5?

because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled. -

I got a new ipod touch for Christmas.
Today I was going to put music on it, i was told there was updates.
So I went ahead to do them.
My Ipod is stuck on the screen with the usb cord pointing to the itunes logo.
In Itunes i'm told :
Itunes has dected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes.
Turning the ipod off - the same screen appears when it's back on.
When I click restore ipod and after restore and update is clicked ; Extracting software loads up at the top.
When its done this is the message I get:
The iPod 'iPod' cannot be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.
I've been looking up trying to figure it out myself and have read making sure a setting in Lan Settings in Internet Properties has ; Automatically detect settings checked. I still get the same ipod message.
I've tried holding the power and home key to turn it off, then powering it back on. But that doesn't work.
I installed itunes today, so its up to date - I checked.
I don't know what else to do.

Select the hosts file (normally you can find your hosts file at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC).

My new iPod touch is not letting me open the app store or iTunes. Safari is working fine. Also my iPad and iPhone are working fine. Wifi is connected. The software update is also taking forever on iPod, it says it will take 49 hours. Should it take that long? I have iTunes 10.4 and an iPod touch. I have always had trouble with synching my iPod.
Right now, iTunes will not connect to the iTunes store. When I try to synch my iPod touch, it gets stuck in "Step 2: Backing Up," and the bar loads forever. I've left it alone for several hours and it has not made any progress. When I try to restore the iPod, or update it, iTunes gives me an error message that it "Cannot connect to the iPod software update server. This has happened despite being connected to the internet, on both my school network and my home network.
I've tried messing with the hosts file in the System32/etc. folder as the website instructed on the apple website, but that did not solve the problem.
Recently, several parts of audiobooks I have have also become unplayable on my iPod, despite being able to be played on iTunes. The parts are listed but are grey and cannot be selected.
I recently copied a bunch of audiobooks via flash drive from my sister's computer to my iTunes - could this be part of the problem? They were from an Audible account that I don't share.

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes, Sync and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?
What version of iTunes are you using? The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.
