Ipod stuck in DO NOT Disconnect mode, will not eject from itunes

I just got this thing replaced, my Ipod can't disconnect from my computer! It is in DO NOT disconnect mode, I try to eject it from itunes and it says that files are being used by another application, I log out of my computer and it still won't let it go

So the iPod remains in My Computer and in iTunes and won't disconnect? You should try shutting down or restarting your computer.
Or does it disappear from My Computer and iTunes but still says Do Not Disconnect? » http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93492

  • Please help me - "Do Not Disconnect" Message Will Not Go Away

I got my ipod late 2006 and it played perfectly until just now. I had it hooked to itunes, unplugged it when it was safe and right away a "do not disconnect message" came on the screen and will not go away. And this message is different from previous ones in that it is not blinking at all. I hooked it up back to itunes and a message came on which says:
"itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the ipod".
So should I go ahead and restore it and everything will be alright. Sorry if my query is stupid but I've never had any problems with this ipod (or my previous one) and I don't want to mess up. Thanks for any help.

    1. My iPod froze... ...while playing a song or My iPod Won't Turn Off
Reset your iPod. [You will not lose any songs or anything, this is like a 'reboot' for the iPod.]
This is the "catch-all, first try, let's hope it only needs a reset" step that everyone loves:
§ Toggle the Hold switch to on, then back to off (none of the red is showing).
§ Press and hold down the Menu and Select (Center) buttons for 10 seconds
(until you see the Apple logo) as shown in the picture.
    2. My iPod Won't Turn Off
The normal way to turn off an iPod is to hold down the Play/Pause button for 2-3 seconds. Sometimes, the iPod gets into a state where this does not work.
The short-term way to fix it, is to reset your iPod. See 2. above.
Some report this symptom is defined as a hard drive fault from the 2006-1-10 Update. Which, for V4 and under versions, and possibly even Nano and Video, the hard drive will not respond to both ways of turning off, or soft reset. forcing the user to restore the iPod. or let the power run dry. The only real solution of this is to find an updater that restores your iPod to a version before the 2006-1-10 updater. (e.g. Updater 2005-6-26. Which reverts to 1.2) Currently, no possible solution is found by Apple. As Apple replies with an automatic response stating to send the iPod in for replacement.
Others report that a restore including a full update to the latest version fixes the problem, the only downside being that of course "restore" wipes all your songs and photos and you have to reload the iPod from scratch. Yet another reason to backup your iPod.

  • New Classic iPod will not restore and can't eject from iTunes.

    Hi everybody.
I just bought a new 160 GB Classic a week ago and promptly attached it to my Windows based laptop and installed the newest firmware.
I can add shows and songs to it with no problems, but if I do, I can NOT then eject the iPod from iTunes. It says that it is being used (it's not). The iPod itself says that it is "Synchronizing" despite the fact that I have NOTHING checked to synchronize (I disabled them all).
The only way I can eject at this point is to use the Windows function of "Safely Remove Hardware". However, if I simply connect the iPod to my computer and do NOT do anything with it (ie; transfer a song, etc.) it will allow me to eject.
No matter what, when I connect my iPod to iTunes I can never Restore it. I get Error Message 1418.
When I called Apple Care they had me go and replace it but the second one does the exact same thing.
I am just wondering if any other Windows users are experiencing the same thing before I go crazy.
Again, I have the latest firmware and the latest version of iTunes.
    Thanks.

1a. Your PC can read iTunes, but for some strange reason, it just ignores your iPod. You have:
    a) Reset the iPod (back to factory settings)
    b) Reset the ipod, by flicking the top slider on the iPod on and off, then pressing 'Menu and 'Centre button'
    for 6 secondish. let go!
    b) Downloaded upto date iTunes onto your pc...
    c) spent hours entering all your tracks into your library
    ....and then nothing!
Works ok on the pc ok, but dead on the ipod.
    TRY THE FOLLOWING:
1b. a) Delete iTunes from you 'Control Panel' (click on Add & Remove Software).
Note: Make sure you delete everything to do with the Apple iPod, this is very important. (I just deleted
iTunes, and believe me you will be there for days..get rid of all of it and start a fresh).
    b) Reboot your pc...
    c) Plug in your iPod....it should now work.
Note: If still not working, try an earlier version of iTunes e.g Ver. 7.4.3.1
    READ FIRST:
2a. Somestimes people have problems with iTunes because of the clash with Microsoft Media Player.
    a) All you need to do is uninstall Media Player from your PC and reboot your system.
    b) Load the Latestest iTunes from the iTune & Apple site http://www.apple.com/itunes/
    c) Reboot your PC iTunes, it should now work.
However, like me if you want the best of both worlds and want Media Player, you can re-install Media Player.
Personally I use Ver. 10 - it works ok with iTunes and it has majority of functions as Ver. 11 but without the
registering via redtape as they introduced with ver.11
Note: As long as you install iTunes first and then Media Player you should be ok - Media player has a sub-routine
in its programming to dominate other players - and therefore causes you problems, without telling you why....'Nice One Bill Gates!'
but if say, you have installed iTunes FIRST then for the sub-routine seems to ignore it....strange huh!
Try it....what have you got to lose?

  • HT1853 My laptop lost connection with itunes while my ipod was in do not disconnect mode.  My ipod will not respond now and still shows do not disconnect?

My ipod was connected to my laptop and in the 'Do not Disconnect' mode.  My computer rebooted after security scan and now my iPod is stuck in the 'Do not Disconnect' mode.  The iPod will not turn off, nor will my itunes recognize it is connect.

Try a hard reset of the iPod.  To do this, press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

It has already been 6 days from your post, my apology for responding so late, but it is my habit to help only the leftovers, which the other contributors missed.
Toggle the hold switch make sure there is no red showing.
To reboot an iPod. (Or RESET in Apple iPod jargon)
Press Menu and Center button for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON , this would not erase any data from your iPod.
I would advice you to leave the iPod charging for about 4 hours, if it has been discharged for 1 year or more, and also Apple recommends that you charge the iPod at least once a month, to prevent a discharged battery leakage, which may corrrode the circuitry in the iPod.
Hopefully you don't get the dreaded RED X on the iPod screen.
    Good Luck!

  • My Ipod 30gig is stuck in the "Do Not Disconnect" mode

i plugged it into my macbook pro, and noticed after a while that my ipod never mounted. i looked at the ipod screen and it was in the "do not disconnect" stage. so i waited. then i went to "file" then "sync to my ipod" but the option was grey'ed out. so i restarted my computer. the ipod just stayed in the "do not disconnect" mode as the computer rebooted, and did not mount. none of the ipods buttons do anything. it does not go to sleep.

Argh, mine does that too. I would also really love a solution on this one, so therefor i'm bumping this thread

  • IPod frozen in Do Not Disconnect mode

My iPod froze as I was updating it. I could not get it out of Do Not Disconnect mode. I had to disconnect it. Now it is stuck in that mode and my Mac won't recognise it when I lug it in. I have tried holding down the menu and select buttons, but nothing. I want to reset it but can't get the computer to recognise that it is there. Any help gratefully recieved

There is a lot of that going around. The first thing I would try is launching Disk Utility and "verify" the iPod to see if it reports any problems. If it does, you will probably need to restore your iPod.

    ipod video   Windows XP

I'm having exactly the same problem. I connected my iPod (video, 60gb) into my G5iMac to power up the battery, and iMusic didn't recognize it, and now it's completely stuck in the "Do Not Disconnect" mode. I tried to reset it, but it's still stuck. I have it charging via a wall outlet, but it doesn't appear to be charging. It worked fine up until today. Help!

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My Ipod touch ios version 6.1.3 will not allow me to connect to my wifi, Please help me!!

My ipod touch ios version 6.1.3 will not allow me to connect to my wifi. I tried rebooting my wifi router, refreshing my ipod, resseting the networks and manually logging into my wifi. Sometimes it will go through for a brief moment, but the wifi connection will ultimately disconnect. Each time i try to connect to my wifi afterwards a small pop up will say "Unable to join the network". Please help. it's really annoying and frustrating.

Thank you Carolyn Samit, but nothing is working.
I've restored my ipod both to a backup and back to factory. I know the password is correct,
the router is the newest version (and it's plugged in and on), my ipod is updated, i've turned my wifi settings on and off, i've turned the ipod off and on. No luck yet. I've been working on it for hours now. About ready to sleep on it...maybe some luck will find me tomorrow...
Still in need of dire help.

  • My iPhone 5 bricked when upgrading to iOS 7. Now it is stuck at the activation part and will not activate.

I downloaded the iOS 7 but it would not install so i tethered it to my computer the connect to iTunes screen came on the iPhone. But after a few minutes, it crashed and iTunes told me it was in recovery mode and that it will be restored to factory setting. After that process, it is stuck on the activation part and will not activate. Please advise!

All of Apple's servers...including the activation servers are pretty much flooded with users like you doing the same thing. Be patient and keep at it...or wait till the traffic to them has decreased and then try again. Coming back to it tomorrow  (if that's a viable option for you) will likely increase your chances of not having issues.

  • Ipod touch was working, shut down and will not power up

Ipod was working. Went dead and will not power up. The unit was charged. I connect it to a charger and I get nothing. Tried the power and home button combo but the unit is not responding. It is less than 6 months old

Try restoring the iPod via iTunes on your computer.  If iTunes does not see the iPod:
    - place the iPod in recovery mode.  See:

I purchased a movie through iTunes and the movie gets stuck on the opening screen and will not play.  Has anybody had this happen?  And if so is there any solution?

    Hey Christian,
I'd follow the troubleshooting steps below, from this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
See if that resolves the issue and gets your video playing again.
    All the best,
    David

  • IPod stuck on "OK to Disconnect" HELP!

All of a sudden, one night I decided to drift away to some songs, and I noticed a check mark on the screen, and the screen wasn't lighting up.. so I turned the light on and checked it out... a message saying "OK to Disconnect" is now STICK on my screen!
I tried restarting my PC, and reinstalling iTunes. My iPod is recogonized fine by iTunes and I can still add/remove songs. It's a brand new 30gb iPod video. It isn't even a month old! Any fix for this? Am I SOL and do I have to return it to Apple to get it fixed?
    Any help would be appreciated.
PS I tried disconnecting and reconnecting my iPod 100 times.. it just stays stuck at "OK to disconnect".
EDIT: Not to sound stupid or anything.. but if I put my ear up to the bottom of the iPod (where you connect the USB cable), I can hear a faint, repeating beep. Sounds like the HDD may be messed up?

hasn't happen to my new one yet hehe but just read through like 20 or 30 of the post on this fourm and the most common fix it jut to reset the ipod if that doesn't work try retoring the ipod if that doesn't work take a hammer to your monitor and just be happy you got to take your anger and fustrations out on something less expensive than your comp box or your new shinny ipod or just beat up on the keyboard and slam the mouse so hard on the desk you break the keyboard rollout park and start breakign other things in hosue(keep in mind computer and ipod are essiental to life)
ok maybe dont' goto those extrems lol but for the most part fixing the ipod if as simple as a reset or restore(keep in mind restore delets all fiels on ipod so b rdy for abotu 4 hours of adding 60 gigs of music back onto the ipod lol)

My ipod classic just froze on me and will not even reset.  All I'm getting on the display is a read circle with a red x in the middle.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to restore it and instead get the red X symbol, it's a very good indication of a damaged hard drive inside of your iPod. This means you'll need to take or send your iPod in for repair or replacement.
