IPod stuck on black reboot screen and won't boot up

I realize I made a mistake now. I went to Disk Utility and formatted my iPod for UNIX file system. I wanted to be able to plug it into a Linux machine and copy some files over.
Now the iPod is stuck on the black reboot screen with the dim Apple logo. I can hear the hard drive in it attempting to boot up every few seconds.
I can't get iTunes to see the iPod when I plug it in the dock. I can't even get my Mac to see the iPod now.
Any suggestions on how I can Restore it? Or did I kill my poor iPod?

I think I found the solution:

Your suggestion is correct but I have to have it in Disk Mode first before I can format it back to HFS+ and then Restore.
Thanks for the help!

  • Mac Pro gets stuck on the grey screen and won't finish booting

I have a Mac Pro 1, 1 recently (successfully) upgraded to snow leopard that gets stuck on the grey screen with the spinning rainbow cursor (after the apple logo and brief blue screen) and won't finish booting up. This happened after my computer froze up and I had to force quit.  I checked out the forums and I tried all the all the suggestions (like disconnecting peripherals) and appropriate disk utilities, saw no errors with the HD reported, and had no trouble doing a safe boot  (everything works o.k. there) or starting up from the software disk to perform the repairs.  I did notice that during the repair permissions command, it gets stuck in the last few minutes, the CD starts to chug along, and everything freezes and I have to force quit.  This happens every time I try it.  I eventually backed everything up, erased the HD and reinstalled the OS, reset PRAM and NVRAM, but I'm still getting the grey screen on restart.  Tech tool deluxe reports a "fail" on the video RAM, but everything else seems to check out.  Could it be a graphics card issue?   I did notice some funky visual glitches occurring prior to the breakdown.  Any other ideas?

I wouldn't trust Apple Disk Utility to do a hard drive repair, but I would go with TechTool Pro 5/6 if you have that instead of Disk Warrior from Alsoft.
Clone the drive, though you should have some bootable backup clones already; repair the clone; then boot and work from that drive. Always have a working copy of the system.
And off load all your data to other drives.

  • My iphone 4 is stuck in a reboot loop and won't stop. Any ideas?

It froze during a message. I went to restart it and it didn't finish restarting, tried again and got a white screen. Now it's stuck in a reboot loop and I can't get it to stop.

First, plug your iPhone into your cpmputer. Then, press and hold the Home+Power buttons for around 10 seconds, then release the power button but continue holding the Home button, until you see a pop up in iTunes. Then, restore your iPhone.

  • Vertical bars on screen and won't boot up

All of the sudden my MacBook won't boot up.  It has pink and gray verticals bars for a few minutes and then just goes gray and won't boot up. Can anyone help.

    Hey KatInTheHat2,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like it might be a screen issue or a computer issue. This first article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on.

  • Gray Screen and Won't Boot Up

I posted this problem several weeks ago. Then there was an update. Everything went away until yesterday. Now I when I turn on the IMac 20" I get either a gray screen followed by the loud fan after a few minutes, or, I get folder with a question mark icon flashing on a gray screen. I have rebooted over and over and nothing changes. ANy one have any recommendations how to fix this - this time. Previously, this problem seem to coincide with an Apple update.

The only thing I can think of short of a hardware or software problem is go into:
System Preferences > Startup Disk, from here make sure you have the correct location selected, "on Macintosh HD"
Also, which version of the iMac G5 do you own? Rev A, B, etc. You can go here: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/ check to see if your machine falls into any of the repair programs...

    Hey Julius62,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you have a gray screen during startup. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Ipod touch 2nd gen stuck on low battery screen and won't turn on, Ipod touch 2nd gen stuck on low battery screen and won't turn on

My ipod touch was working fine until yesterday it just shut off with about half of charge left. I tried holding the power and home button but nothing. When I plug it into the charging wall outlet the low battery screen pops up and same goes for when I plug it into iTunes on my computer. I let it alone overnight to see if the battery would drain but same thing happened today. What should I do?

I have never seen this answer before but here's what worked for me and I found it accidentally.
I have an iPhone and an iPad and I only had 1 charger (my only Apple cord didn't work anymore so I had thrown it out and I thought maybe that was the problem, except my iphone charged fine with my pink cord) by my bedside, so I would just hook up the one that needed it the most before I went to bed.  Well one day I woke up to find that my iPad had a low battery, with the red battery picture. When I plugged it into the charger, it just kept recycling to the Apple logo and then the spinning wheel of death, and back again.
I did some research and couldn't figure it out. People who thought it was a dead battery still had the same problem after they sent it in and got a new battery  My iPad is not jail broken and half the "solutions" were over my head. I have over 1300 apps on my iPad, not to mention thousands of pictures, that I was just feeling so bereft and sad that I might have lost everything.  So I just let my iPad sit, and drained the whole battery down to the nubbin.  It was 2-3 days without a charger that I just let it sit.
Then I put it on the charger again and I noticed I still got the red battery symbol, but the red was a thinner slice. I went to work and left it on the charger all day. When I returned, one of my FB notifications came on and bam, there it was, my sign on screen or whatever it's called, where you slide the thingy across. And it was back!!!!!!
So I was overjoyed.  I'd also had a problem syncing with a warning that it overloaded my USB port. It was a separate problem, but I was able to sync it after that, and my iPhone too, so I was ecstatic.
Then the battery thing happened again about a week later.  I thought I had been diligent about keeping it charged but it went down after only a day off the charger.  Realized that I had FB and mail notifications notifying me in the startup screen, so that it was constantly turning itself on and off.  I have almost 5000 FB friends and 10 email accounts, so that was a lot of steady activity that I wasn't really aware of.  I have now turned off all notifications to every app, since they also come on my phone AND I bought a 2nd cord, a purple one, so now I'm set and don't expect to ever have that problem again.
Hope this helps everyone who thought they had a brick.

  • My second gen iPod touch has a blank screen, and won't turn on or charge in an AC outlet. When plugged into iTunes, it is completely recognized and synced, but the screen remains blank and off. What can I do?

    Hello.
I recently woke up this morning to use my iPod Touch (2nd Gen) to find that it was completely unresponsive to both buttons and would not turn on. I had been using it the night before and had not charged it. Thinking the battery was drained, I plugged it into a wall outlet for two hours, and still no sign of life on the iPod. Plugging it into the computer, it immediately showed up in iTunes and synced normally, and even indicated it had nearly a full charge. Still, however, the screen showed nothing. I checked the lock and home buttons to see if it was stuck, but it was not. Does anyone have an idea of what this is? Do I need to get my iPod repaired? Any help would be appreciated.
I am running iOS 4.1, and am out of warranty coverage.
    Thanks,
    - Justin

1; Do a hard rest by holding the buttons at least 15 seconds. Does the Apple logo come on?
    2. Hold the power button down for at least 5 seconds. Do you see the battery symbol?
If the answer is no to both questions, you most likely have a hardware issue--possible bad battery.

  • My late 2006 Black MacBook has a gray screen and won't boot.

My late 2006 Black MacBook has a gray screen, folder icon, and flashing question mark.  I replaced the HD with a Western Digital 500 GB and had no change.  What's wrong with my MacBook?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the hard drive Operating System data is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Once it has finished booting and you Choose Your Language and you are at the Install screen launch Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then select the First Aid Tab run Repair Disk and if that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If it does restore AS NEW> if it doesnt try remove iPod from computer but leave cable connected to computer hold down round button & connect again Keep round button held down wait about 15 seconds & see if you see the iTunes symbol on iPod with usb cord>if you do keep the round button held down & wait for iTunes on computer to give you message to restore>restore ...If symbol does not show up & you are not able to restore device will need to be replaced
