IPOD sync incredibly slow

Hi - i hope someone has the answer to this - for some reason my ipod is taking an age to sync - about 5 mins per song! so it's been running for over 24 hours and still not done. I'm running vista ultimate with all the latest patches etc and version of itunes. When i plug the ipod in (same thing happens to my other 2 ipods) in vista scans them and always wants to fix them for corruption and adobe downloader always picks them up really quickly and scans at speeds you would expect of USB2. if i cancel out of the downloader and disk scan, itunes picks it up easily - knows how many tracks it needs to re sync and then starts syncing away.. but it takes an ages. Any offers of insight greatly appreciated. This is only a recent occurence.

It could have to do with your virus software. Check to see if it is set to scan all drives. If so, disable it for the iPod drive when it is attached. That will definately make a difference. The virus software is trying to scan each file that you are adding to the disk (iPod). That is how Windows, and the virus software see the iPod.
Hope this helps.

  • IPod sync painfully slow

After upgrading to itunes 7.0 syncing now takes couple of hours instead of couple of minutes that it took with the older version.
Updating to 7.0.1 did NOT fix this problem.
    Anybody else having this issue?

    Ethan, your not alone!
I experience this on the PC side also. I got off the phone with mac support and also thought it was iTunes 7.0.1. Here are some things I tryed that dramaticly increase my ipod sync speed.
•USB 2.0 port use that, if not firewire it's a bit slower but not noticable.
•"Do not use USB 1.0 ports".
    • latest software iTunes 7.0.1 and latest iPod software.
    • Before updating the iPod, in iTunes music library select "Date added" to the latest date, What this does is places the last changes in chronological order in one place for easier iPod search and sync.
    • Manage your iPod syncing manually to only update what you want.
    • AAC and mp4 files sync faster than mp3's
    • Files with a high compression Bit Rate slow down syncing not to mention use more disk space.
    • If your iTune library folder phyically resides on a external drive as in my case, try defragmenting it regulary, ****, defragment everything it's a good practice.
These things have made my syncing faster so far. I have over 14,000 songs most at 128 Bit Rate on my iPod and have been told that might make it slow, but I disagree before updating to 7.0.1 I synced up in second flat.
Hope these things helps, if you find something else e-mail me at [email protected]

  • Why is iPod syncing so slow?

I have been try to sync my iPod with my pc and it has taken close to 20 hours, and I am not yet half way. This has never happened. Why is it so slow? Any help

    To be of any assistance,
Which version of iTunes are you using?
    Which version of Windows?
What is your iPod software version, as shown in iTunes summary page?
Did you install or update any software since the last 'fast' sync??
    Have a nice day!

  • Ipod writing incredibly slow once certain capacity reached(approx 35/160GB)

I'm having a problem with my ipod classic, 160 GB. This is the older one, just under a year old now.
after the drive is filled to about 35GB, I am unable to transfer songs via itunes. If I attempt to excede that amount it freezes, and the database gets messed up so that only the first artist shows under the music section of my ipod.
After noticing this problem always happened at the same capacity, I thought maybe a corrupt song was causing the problem as I attempted to sync my entire library. To help hone in on the cause of the problem, I decided to copy a number of large files in disk mode through windows explorer. Once it reaches 35 GB, the transfer speed grinds nearly to a halt. From full usb2 speed down to 504KB/sec.
The next thing I did was try to format the drive. Once it reaches the same point the formatting seems to freeze, but I suppose it could just be taking forever if it is also slowing down to 500KB/sec at that point.
At this point, I am inclined to believe it is a hardware issue. Frustratingly, it is still under warranty for a week, but I don't have the receipt, just the original box it came in.
Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be? What I could do to fix it? It's really killing me inside to see my beloved 160GB ipod reduced to this pitiful state.

  • Slow iPod sync with network drive

I run a small network for my home/office (I am self employed) with about 4 PCs for me and my family.
We have 3 iPods in our family and we just use one PC to host iTunes, but because we have so much music, I have put the music on a network drive served from my file server (Windows Small Business Server - Windows Server 2003 based).
There's no problem with this setup, except one:
I've noticed that when iPods sync with iTunes, it takes a very long time, perhaps 5 times as long than when I had my music files on an external hard drive directly connected to the PC on which we run iTunes.
This is fustrating. My question is: is there anything that can be done about this ?
I can't really understand why this should be an issue. iTunes has, stored in the library files on my local PC, the details of all my music files. So when my iPod syncs, surely iTunes consults the iPod and consults what is in iTunes and figures out what should change - and then and only then should iTunes need to connect to the network drive to actually get any necessary files. Is my understanding wrong of what iTunes is doing when syncing an iPod ?
The issue is that even with no changes, sync-ing is an issue.
Any help on this gratefully received - have looked in this forum and other places, but haven't managed to trawl and info on my issue.

Having been given an iPod video 60Gig as a present, I am sometimes forced to use it.
Recently I tried - I downloaded and installed latest itunes 7.5 on the PC running Windows XP.
Built up the library of music - tried to do a sync. So slow I nearly hit the PC. The transfer rate would merely get 40 Meg on in 5 minutes (thats my estimate all I know is it never finished). I tried to leave it running for 3 hours and still not finished - the size of music to transfer was about 2400 songs.
I then tried to use Vista Home Basic - with itunes 7.5 - it wouldnt even recognize the ipod.
After a few days of giving up and banging my head against the wall I tried Linux too - but that was slow too.
I eventually went back to Vista and de-installed itunes 7.5 - found version 6.05 and installed it. It went through like clockwork (well as clockwork as can be it was magically fast but fast enough to fill half of the 60Gig).
I then had the magic idea - why not update to 7.5 from 6.05 and guess what - its slow again painfully slow.
    Version 7.5 *****!

  • Incredibly  Slow Back Up When Syncing

Now that there's apps on the iPhone the back up when syncing is incredibly slow. This one I'm doing at the moment is taking 20 minutes.
Was the same with my iPhone and iPhone 3G. Surely this cant be permanent, I frequently quickly add songs to my iPhone before I'm off out.

From here, the OutlookSyncClient or something like that seems to be using up the CPU usage. Restart your computer, then it got faster for the syncing for me.
(Most recent sync of my iPhone after my restart: 23.7 seconds)

Were you ever able to solve this problem? If so,
how? If not, did you see the same slowness copying
the files in Windows Explorer from the NAS to the
    iPod?
No I wasn't. To be honest I have essentially given up as even if I can fix it, disk space is cheaper than life is long!
Using the NAS in general is no problem. In fact, once iTunes got beyond the initial working out of what needed to be removed from and copied to the iPod, having all my MP3s on the NAS and copying direct to the iPod was no issue.
Following some sage (and frankly scary!) advice at ilounge (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=163611), I've decided to keep two copies of my MP3s. The fact that my fiendish NAS plan has failed is hurting more than the not-all-that-traumatic reality of duplicating 140GB of files if truth be told!

  • Address Book Sync running slow parallels and mac (iCloud)

Briefly, every time that "address book sync" becomes active on the Mac side, the computer on both the Mac and the Windows side becomes incredibly slow, almost usable. If I disable the "address book sync" through the activity monitor (force quit), the computer on both the Mac and Windows side restores to normal speed. I have 4 CPU's on this MAc book pro and i have configured parallels to 2 for the Mac side and 2 for the Windows side. I have also allocated 2GB of memory to the Windows 7 side which is within the recommended range of 512MB to 4GB (Maximum memory is 16BG).
I have also noticed in "activity monitor" that the process name "prl_vm_app" can run as high as 200% of cpu usage and vary anywhere from its current level whilst writing this email of 5% upwards. This does not however seem to affect the speed of the computer and again this is being caused by "address book sync". For information I am running Outlook on the windows side and using "contacts" and this is also being replicated on the mac side in "contacts". Whenever I update or enter a new contact in the windows side (Contacts in outlook) then address book sync starts shortly after on the Mac side and the computer slows considerably.
I have iCloud working on the mac side and windows side syncing my contacts calendar etc.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problem too. My iphone is not syncing with my addressbook on the mac, no matter what I try, it is very very frustrating!!

  • After reformatting hard drive, iPod syncs very slowly with iTunes

A couple of months ago I had to reformat my computer's hard drive. I keep all my music files on an external hard drive. After reformatting, the man who did this for me reloaded iTunes for me and imported all my music back into my iTunes library.
It seems that since that time, when I sync my iPod to the iTunes library, it takes many times longer than it used to. Maybe something else happened to my iPod or iTunes and the reformat is just a conincidence, but it really does seem to take three or four times longer to sync.
I have iTunes 7.4.1.2 and my iPod is an older one, a 40G with dock connector
Also, I recently bought some audiobooks to put on my iPod. I only had about 600megs available so the iPod would not sync. I then removed several Gigs from my iTunes library. When I click on the "music" icon under "library" it shows that I have only a little over 29G used which should leave well over 5 plus Gigs available for the new music. But when I try to sync the iPod, it gives me the message that I have only approx. 600 megs available. What's up. I never have had this problem before and I have had the iPod for several years.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

I actually learned yesterday that Apple didn't put USB 2.0 in their Macs until G5... something I was VERY irritated to find out. Turns out they were betting that Fire Wire would take off instead of USB 2.0, so they only equipped their machines with USB 1.1. So as a result, my iPod is unacceptably slow. Other nagging problems like this are convincing me that I'll have to get a new Mac Pro in the coming year, but for the meantime I think I'll be buying a USB 2.0 PCI card.
    Thanks for your response.

how can I improve the speed of my Macbook?  It's become incredibly slow...

    Hi,
Troubleshooting Steps are... Restart...  Reset...  Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
Try a Reset of the Phone... You will Not Lose Any Data...
    Turn the Phone Off...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
The Apple logo will Appear and then Disappear...
    Usually takes about 10 - 15 Seconds...
    Turn the Phone On...
If that does not help... See Here:

  • I'VE RAN ACROSS A VERY ODD PROBLEM ***iPod syncing trouble***

I bought my Macbook Pro in August 09. its very new and i have a problem with my iPod syncing and i need help noticing wats wrong.
My iPod will not sync properly, i plug it in, it shows up on my desktop and in my iTunes as a black iPod(as it normally would) i add my library to the iPod Music Folder, it adds a few hundred, sometimes thousands of songs, then seems to buffer...or freeze!! And it seems to freeze on one song(always a random song, always different sizes or by a different artist.) i get the beachball(multi colored ball represents loading) as my mouse icon and i cant click anything in my itunes window for a few moments. Then wen im able to click none of the buttons respond. the only way to *stop the ipod from syncing. *unfreeze iTunes. *or eject my ipod. is to unplug it fro mym laptop. then the scren that says "You have manually unplugged a USB device and some data added recently may be lost blah blah blah." then i go to turn my ipod on and non of the songs that added prior to the sync freezing on that one song were added. Can anyone help me out with this and give me a few reason as to why this might be happening?
*NOTE: Ive tried a few of my friends iPods aswell, and i encounter the same problem everytime. the odd thing is, everytime i turn my laptop on for the day, and i do this, this problem accours after adding a thousand songs or so, and after manually unplugging the iPod after the sync freezes on a song and plugging it back in to try again, it stops after 100 songs, and sometimes after 20 or 30 songs, and its always a low amount after the first time i try and sync after powering on my laptop.
*ALSO NOTE: after the sync freezes, about 30 seconds after the beachball usually goes away, and i can press anything in itunes, EXCEPT a song name in whichever library i was in before the sync freeze. and after pthe beachball goes away, its as if the songs ARE still syncing, and itunes is working, just at and EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY slow pace. *AND this problem accoured BEFORE i installed Snow Leapord 10.6 and 10.6.1*
i hope someone can help me out this problem has really ben bothering me and id like to have it fixed sooner then later.
    thanks.

I am having this problem too. I have a classic iPod, several years old, just restored it to factory settings, which required the update to the newest software (not what I wanted to do, but I had no choice. I wanted to change the name of the iPod and mistakenly thought this way the way I had to do it. Wish I checked. Now when I sync that iPod, it goes for about 5GB of data - although sometimes less - and freezes. It says it is still updating but it isn't. Then iTunes becomes unresponsive and I have to force quit it. I cannot eject the iPod even through Finder, as I get a warning that says the information is in use by another program (although none are open). Then if I try to restart the computer, it totally freezes and I have to do a hard manual reboot. Have used disk utility to repair permissions, got an interesting message that says "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Cores...has been modified and will not be repaired."
I have updated other iPods (newer) also this evening and they do not freeze. Any help would be appreciated.

  • ITunes incredibly slow to load, cannot see any devices...

    Hello,
iTunes is incredibly slow - takes 2 minutes+ to load. When it does load, it cannot see iPod touch, iPad 3 or iPhone 5. It could yesterday.
    Updated iTunes.
Totally removed all iTunes and associated programs, and reinstalled.
Checked Apple USB drivers, all functioning.
    Deleted preferences file.
    Ran on Windows safe mode.
Ran 3 different malware scans in Safe Mode.
    Unistalled Quicktime.
Ran on basic boot under MSIconfig.
    Please help!
    Windows 7, i5, 6gb ram.

Yes, that's a good point. On my MBP, everything works just fine, so it's not an internet connectivity issue. Both machines are running the same anti-virus/firewall software with the same settings. The MBP is wireless via Time Capsule, whereas the iMac is hardwired to TC. The only difference is the entire library is on the iMac and AppleTV pulls from it for both audio & photos.
But these are all "library" issues, which are unaffected. It's only the "store" and the rendering of the pages within it. I tried the parental settings trick to disable iTunes Store & iTunes U - sped right up on display. But as soon as I changed settings so I could actually access content? Slowed right down...
    Any other thoughts??
    Thanks
