IPod Syncing Takes Forever On Mac

I have a iPod Classic 120GB that I have running with iTunes on my Mac.  I have syncing disabled on the device in iTunes.  However, it seems like every time I plug my iPod in, iTunes starts syncing it.  It takes forever to do this.  It can sometimes be a couple of hours to finish.  I can't seem to figure out why this continues to happen when I have syncing turned off.  I also can't seem to figure out why it takes so long and why it will not let me cancel the process once it has started.  Can anyone provide any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

Here's one that helped me after hours of troubleshooting and lost data....
I changed my cable! Apparently my cables were no good? So I bought a new one... (really APPLE? I have to "buy" a new one?)
FINALLY IT WORKS!!!! I know it sounds simple, but it worked for me. Hope this helps.

  • Upgraded iPod touch to 6.01 now music says "no content" on screen. Sync takes forever but won't work

Just upgraded to 6.01. Tried to sync music and it took forever and didn't reflect  the changes made in my folders, it also included lots of tracks that were blank. SO I tried syncing again, it took forever and then the iPod said "no content" when I clicked the music. Syncing takes forever (step 4 of 4) and does nothing now.
Restarted, relaunched and tried syncing many times. Not working.

    - Maybe
Fix for “No Content” on iPhone & iPod after iOS 4.2.1 update
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync (if you can)
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • 3rd gen iPod touch: takes forever to copy songs

When I first got my 64 gb iPod, it took about two to three hours for is to copy over all the files. I was surprised at how fast it was, because my 32GB ipod touch took forever. In order to fix a problem I had with lyrics not syncing, I erased the iPod, which fixed the problem. I've started to copy my music, but it's taking forever. It's been going on for three hours now, and it's not even half completed. I know it's not the USB port or the cable or iTunes - I have an iPad that I use with the same setup that has no issues.
Do these flash based devices get slow over time?

I don't have it checked, but I almost think that that's what's being done. I checked the box a few months ago, but I lost all my lyrics. So I unchecked the box and transferred my music over again. Still no lyrics. I tried everything and couldn't get my lyrics to show up. Finally, last week, I erased my iPod and blanked out iTunes (deleted all the folders and .plist file for iTunes and my iPod). I have my lyrics back, but the slow sync is still there. I really think that my music is being squeezed down, even though I don't have the box checked. Is there any way to tell the bit rate of a song from the iPod?

  • Can't sync photos (sync takes forever) but can sync music videos and apps

I can only get my ipad to sync if I deselect the option to sync photos. If I try and sync my photo library (~5GB, 5000 photos) the sync hangs. Itunes is responsive, but doesn't show a progress bar, just the diagonal stripes moving.
I left the sync for 12 hours without any progress. If I change it to just sync one directory within my photo library (~50 photos) I get the same thing.
Everything else seems to be working fine. Syncing takes a small number of minutes, if that. I've no idea whether this is due to my ipad, itunes installation, or photo files. It seems unlikely to be storage related as the music and videos are all stored on the same drive as the photos.
    Anyone got any thoughts?

Try syncing half the photos. If it fails again, sync the other half.
If the second half fails, try syncing just 5 photos.
The reason for this is there may be a bad photo file in the group of 5,000 and doing half at a time will tend to indicate that if one of the half's sync but the other doesn't.
The group of five will tend to test if there are multiple bad photo files.
If the sync is successful with a smaller set, you then need to try to find the discrepant photo file(s).

  • With new phone, calendar sync takes forever

Using iTunes 7.7.1 on Leopard I am trying to complete the initial sync with my brand-new iPhone 3G. It is currently stuck at synchronizing my calendars. I interrupted the initial sync process, updated the firmware to 2.0.1 and made sure that only one of my calendars is synchronized. It has been going on for well over 10 min now.
In another forum someone had a similar problem synching with Outlooks calendar on Windows. The suggestion given there was to eliminate recurring appointments with no end date. Does this advice apply to the Mac's iCal, as well? I wouldn't even know where to begin with going through my calendar hunting down those items.
    Dominik Hoffmann

Getting the same problem, in my experience the synchronisation does end eventually but it can take several hours. If you allow the process to end then it does seem better the next time although you can't always arrange to have your phone tied up for a few hours a day.
Just for the record I've tried it using calendars without any recurring appointments and it is the same.
I am using iCal with shared calendars iCal server in case that is an issue.
Incidentally, I have also experienced appointments which do not appear to sync and one which seemed to disappear after a sync.
Overall the advice is: use calendars with care!

  • Contact syncing takes forever on iOS 5.1

Hi there, I have recently updated my iPhone to iOS 5.1. Since then I cannot syncronize my iPhone to iTunes. It takes hours and it is still stuck on syncing contacts. Does anyone have a solution? I have the latest itunes and I am using Mac lion.

In Contacts app, choose a contact, scroll down and tap Ahare Contact and tap the Message button.
Do you have text message provision by your carrier?

  • Sync takes forever

I've been using iCal as my main calendar for some years, Entourage as main e-mail client. With OS 10.4 the possibility to sync iCal and Entourage with Exchange came. It used to work quite nicely, until recently. Something happened an now the sync processes are going on all the time. Quite irritating, because it seems to take a lot of processor capacity as well. If I quit iCal and just run Entourage, the computer works almost as it used to. But if I open iCal, first it takes a long time to load, then everything slows down (you get the colorful rotating ball... too often). A sync with iSync (including my phone) also is a long, long process.
I've tried to reinstall iCal, but it seems that the problem is elsewhere. Anybody, any ideas?

    Hi,
I've experienced problems with syncing the calendar on the Exchange Server. When I accept an invitation it shows on the local calendar in Entourage, not on the server account. So I made som changes in the Entourage sync prefs in order to sync iCal with the Exchange calendar. I also use iSync to sync calendars with my Sony Ericsson phone, and one thing this has brougth is that some events, especially all-day events, are duplicated several times.
It is quite a complex syncing process with all the different calendars and gadgets. So in one way I'm not surprised that something goes wrong. But it used to work, so something has changed. I'll try to remove some calendars. How can I remove old parts of the calendars? I've noticed that some of the events are two or three years old.

  • Desktop Sync Takes forever (up to 8 hours)

I have 2 BBs.  A new Bold from Verizon and a Bold from T Moble.  Sometime when i sync them with outlook 2010 (win 7 OS 12 GB RAM Quad Core Proc) they sync in about 5 - 10 mins.  Other times it takes up to 8 hours for a sync to complete.  There is no consistancy to this and I am running the latest software on the desktop and the BBs.  I am not on a BES server.  Any ideas?

What method you are using to sync eithe with cable or with bluetooth

  • Converting to ipod format takes forever..?

converting downloaded .avi movies to mpg4 or h264 for my ipod video seems to take hous and hours for films of less than 1 hour length.
is this normal? I work on an imac G5, so that can't be it.
I use quicktime pro 7 to do this
    annyone have an answer?
    thanks

The slow encoding of H264 has been noted many times in this group. You could try making a mpeg-4 video instead of H264 if you are willing to settle with a little less quality or somewhat larger files. These settings for the iPod have been posted a number of times:
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320x240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480x480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats<<

  • Syncing takes forever.....then I get an error.

When I sync my iPad the message at the top of the iTunes screen says "Syncing iPad - Step 1 of 5 - Backing Up". This "step" takes hours! Not sure really how long because I click on the "x" to make it stop and then it zooms through the other "steps" and is done in a matter of seconds. And then I get an error message that says "can not back up iPad because the iPad is disconnected". Do I have it set up incorrectly?

  • Syncing takes forever

How much time I would expect if I sync two movies from my iMac into my ATV (with ~1.8 GB each movie)? I started to sync this 2 movies, have passed 5 hours and still around 40% done. It is working, not freezed.

It's not always the best idea to have two wifi devices on top of each other, give them a little clear space between them.
Networks are affected by distance and interference, distance doesn't seem to be a problem for you, but if you have any interference you may not be able to tell by signal strength alone. Try changing your wifi channel.
Are you using time capsule for your itunes library, if so, don't expect blazing results, the TC can be quite slow especially if there is other activity taking place on the TC's drive.
I think the tv itself is likely to be the limiting factor when it comes to transfer speeds in most situations, my estimate would be not to expect a 1.8 GB movie to transfer to the tv any quicker than 15 minutes at best.

  • Syncing takes forever with firmware 2.0

I had my 16 Touch installed some app on it then re connected it to my imac add another app i have about 500 mb of apps on the touch but no songs or pictures. It was backing up all night ie 6+ hours??? What can i do to fix this problem? under 1.1.4 it took about 1 min max to sync. I know I can skip the backup by clicking on the X.

    Software update fixed it

  • Backup and sync TAKE FOREVER.

    See subject.
    Any ideas for a fix?

The problem is applications: backup does an entire backup of data and applications regardless of what has changed or not changed since the last connection. For some reason a song that is the same size as an application syncs lots faster than the application. So the more applications you have, the slower the backup goes.
My solution was to use the hint found at MacOSHints some time ago. I made a backup and then turned off the automatic backup function. With a few exceptions my data is all on the computer anyway so I won't lose much if I have to restore to a backup that is a week or two old. Yesterday I turned the backup function back on so I'm not totally backed up again. With luck September 9 will bring relief to us all.

  • IPod Touch 1G sync now takes FOREVER

Ever since I upgraded to 3.0, my iPod Touch takes FOREVER to sync to iTunes when I plug it in to my computer. Today I plugged it in to get the latest upgrade, and it's been synching for over an hour. Anyone have a similar problem or know how to fix it?
p.s. the 3.0 upgrade broke my iPod, so it has been completely restored since then as well.

    See:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
