IPOD to Sony Receiver to TV???

Does the IPOD have to be connected directly to a TV to work properly? I did that with one TV in my house through RCA input on the TV and it worked ok. Connected the IPOD to my video three input (RCA connection) on my Sony Stereo, which is connect to the TV via S-Video and all I got was sound (no picture). The TV was set to S-Video in and the receiver was set to Video Three. The S-Video connection from my Sony Reciever to the TV works fine, as my DVD works with the same hookup through Video One on my receiver. Any ideas of what the problem may be with this connection? Since the Sony Receiver is connected to the TV via an S-Video, do all the input components to the Sony Receiver have to have the same input (S-Video) to flow properly to the TV? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok this is weird, I have a similar issue... My Yamaha receiver intermittently cuts out the ipods picture, but when I plug it into the tv directly, the picture is fine. I figured it was an ipod problem because I can replay the videos and it will black out in the exact same spot. We need to get to the bottom of this. If anyone has some knowledge of receivers please post!

  • ATV, 5.1 and a Sony Receiver......no blue light!?!

First and foremost, what a fun couple of days. What a great forum too! So many knowledgeable folks willing to share their know-how.
So, my question is this, anyone else out there with their aTV hooked-up to a Sony receiver that's not getting the blue-light on the main display to indicate true 5.1?
Maybe I'm worrying needlessly here as perhaps the audio signal will only be a true 5.1 when HD content is rented. Last night I watched a few of the HD Trailers and was kinda expecting to get the blue-light during those trailers. But nope, it did seem to be pretty decent sound quality, but it almost seemed like it was a "fake" 5.1. Dunno though. Also, I did have a couple issues of "buffering" while I was watching the trailers. The trailer would load completely with the blue bar filling completely and then during the play of the trailer it would suddenly stop and the bar would have to fill again. But it did fill much more quickly (say five seconds or so).
Also, under Audio Settings, I DO have the Dolby Digital Out set to ON. (I'm using component and optical(Toslink) cables for the hook-up. My preference is always HDMI but that's not possible here as I only have two HDMI inputs on my Panny plasma and I'm using them for my HD Cable box and Sony PS3.
The new UI for aTV is not baaaad, but could've been so much better. I actually think that the UI from the prior version was much more visually pleasing with those large, sharp, flying eye-catching graphics. I don't know if Sony would throw a hissy-fit or not, but the aTV should adopt a UI menu like that of the PS3 where the icons are stretched horizontally on the display with the user then being able to scroll up or down within that icon to access that sub-menu. IMHO, that would be much cleaner and more visually pleasing.
And on a sidenote and for clarification, one does not need AirTunes to be able to control their aTV from iTunes on their PC. I was under the impression that I wouldn't have the option to do this as I don't have AirTunes or Airport Extreme. I was VERY happy to see the COMPUTER button on the bottom right part of my iTunes giving me that control. I now won't have to change the input on my HD display to access the UI(thusly disrupting whoever's watching a program pm the TV) to change tunes. (I might've misunderstood some of the recent posts on this though. Maybe what was actually being inferred was that an aTV only need to be AirTunes "capable" to do this.)
    Geez Phil, ramble much? lol
    Carry on.

    Hi Drum_Phil,
I'm not near my ATV right now, but I checked out Superbad on the iTunes page, and it doesn't mention anything about 5.1. (Many of the HD movies have 5.1; some don't.)
Does it say that it's in 5.1 on the ATV rental page? If not, even though it is in HD, it may just be in stereo.
    Hi Maggot.
Thanks for checking that for me. According to iTunes +through my aTV+, Superbad is not only in HD, but also in DD (with the official DD logo).
Another forum poster (RichSolNuv) has confirmed that this movie did indeed support true 5.1 when he watched it with his Sony receiver. So it's probably just a matter of dialing in the settings on it and/or my aTV.
Thanks for the props on my handle. I love lexical ambiguity.

Just to keep the existing software updated and running correctly without crashing.
My concern now is that as new games/apps come out i am going to get a lot more NOT SUPPORTED messages popping up.
Frankly I don't think it's fair as I spent a lot  of money on my 32gb iPod and apple are now conning existing customers to line their pockets !!!!

I would not expect any more update for an iOS compatible with the 4G iPod.

  • Blue Flashing Screen When Connecting to Sony Receiver with HDMI Cable

I'm trying to avoid buying an AppleTV by simply using my MBP and the Rowmote Pro app for my iPad. I have a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI cable which works great connected to my 55" Sony HDTV but I would prefer to use my home theatre speakers (vice the HDTVs) by plugging the cable into my Sony Receiver and allowing that to route the video to my TV. The problem is that when I plug the cable into the receiver's #3 HDMI port and then switch the receiver's input to HDMI 3 the MBPs display repeatedly flashes blue as if trying to detect a display. I've tried resetting the PRAM with no success. I would like to avoid the TosLink option, keeping it simple with just the one cable.

You can get a video output from a Mac in the absence of a display. That's called running "headless" or sometimes "server mode." But the Mac will only offer about four choices of headless resolutions, and if there is a way to extend that number, I don't know how to do it.
An item like a receiver may or may not have its own EDID (display driver). Generally speaking the ideal would be that it would just do a pass-through of the EDID of whatever display it (the receiver) is connected to. But for sure inconsistencies arise as inputs get switched around on the receiver or TV, and also as the Mac goes into and comes out of sleep mode. These are all factors that can cause the Mac to end up a lost puppy.
The Detective prevents this from happening by providing a continuous EDID connection from the Mac's perspective. So even though input switching is taking place at the receiver (or TV), the Mac never sees it, and in that case it provides a consistent output.

  • When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. All my music appears to have been erased  iPod yet 41GB of data is on it. Help!

When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. If I do this I will lose the contents of the iPod. The iPod shows no music on it yet 41GB of data is on it under "About" on the iPOD itself. It would appear that the music files are still there. I don't want to reset the iPod as it will mean reloading a significant amount of music i.e. my entire CD collection. Any suggestions? Has my iPod died?

(I'll lose all my music right?)
That is correct. A restore wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and loads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.
See this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

After all the music is safely in iTunes again, go ahead and restore the iPod to factory settings as it says.

    Try a reset ..
    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.

  • Thoughts on bookshelf speakers to sony receiver

I'm looking to purchase a receiver and speaker setup for our LCD TV.  I'm not looking at spending too much money, but want to leave some room for future upgrades.  From what I've read the Sony STR-DG720 is a 7.1 channel system with all the features I'm looking for.  My living room is long and narrow so I don't need a huge surround sound speaker setup.  I was thinking of purchasing the Bose 201 Series V Bookshelf Speakers. Would these work properly with the type of receiver I'm looking at buying?  Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

    Welcome to the forums, shag.
The Bose speakers you are considering will work fine with that Sony receiver. It's always a good idea to audition the receiver speaker combination in the store with your favorite CD.
You should check out the Polk and Klipsch speakers that are available at most Best Buy stores.

  • IPod Nano + Sony personal audio system - how to get radio to play?

We got a Sony RDP-M7iPN personal audio system - that's a good thing.
But the iPod Nano won't play radio if the headphones aren't plugged in.  When it's docked on the Sony system, it won't play radio and there's no way to get a headphone jack plugged in (no room).
Is there something we're missing?  Or is there some adapter we need?  Any thoughts?

Go on to System Preferences and open the Bluetooth icon. Ensure that the SRS-X2 speaker is switched on and next to the Macbook; press down on the Bluetootch icon that is above "pairing" on the speaker and keep pressing it down until it beeps; your Macbook should now be able to find the speaker and you can click pair to pair the two together.

  • HDMI to Sony receiver - unresponsive black screen

Just installed a new mid-2010 Mac Mini connected via HDMI to my Sony 5300 receiver, which switches among 6 HDMI inputs. Everything works great, except when I power the receiver on and switch to the Mac input, the screen is black. All I can see is a white mouse cursor, which I can move, but nothing else happpens.
I have set the preferences to never go to standby, never power off the screen, and go to a screensaver after 10 minutes.
Interestingly, I found that if I hit Shift-Esc I can get the password dialog box to pop up and all is well, but I can't find any documentation on this shortcut and I am still perplexed as to why my screen is black after powering up the receiver.

....Most people do (and should) leave their computers on all the time, especially to make them accessible on their networks from other computers at all times...
I don't know where you got the perception that most people leave their computer on all the time. I provide tech support for a lot of home users and from what I have seen, most people let their Mac go to sleep. Many of them also shut down their computers at the end of the day.
For media center usage, it's true that there is a higher percentage of people who would keep the computer awake all the time. But there are still plenty of people in this forum talking about wanting their mini media center to go to sleep.
The HDMI port makes this machine specifically suited for installation in a home theater setup, which means it will most likely NEVER be connected directly to a TV.
I believe your opinion in this regard is also different from reality. From the conversations on various forums I have observed over the years, most people connect their HDMI devices direct to their TV. They either don't have a surround receiver, or do most of their TV viewing without the receiver active.
If I simply wait long enough, the screen comes to life. But the delay is not cool and certainly not up to par with Apple's reputation for functionality.
HDMI source devices need a response from the display device, in order to know what resolution to output. When they are powered on without a display device also powered on, they do not know what to do. Not all devices "remember" what resolution they were last using. They rely on the information from the display.

  • Hooking up iPod to Stereo Receiver

Is it possible to have my iPod play through my receiver. I'm crossing my finger I can so I can ditch my CD player.
Thanks. Hoping for a good reply.

Yes, you can -- if your receiver has an auxiliary input. It requires a small cable that connects to the earphone jack on the iPod and plugs into the auxiliary input on your receiver. I'm not sure what the cable is called...mine came with my JBL Onstage speaker set.
There may be other ways, but I have used this successfully.

  • Connect iPod to a receiver

I currently have my iPod connected to my home stereo reciever from the docks headphone jack and into the receiver's auxillary in.
The sound is much lower and not near as good as anything else coming out of the receiver.
The receiver has a USB input, but it only gives instructions to have a PC computer hooked up throughthe USB. I tried plugging the iPod in to the USB, but it does not seem to work.
How can I get better sound out of my iPod? Is there anyway to get a digital signal out of it? I have a coaxal in or the USB in on the reciever.
    Thanks for the help.

I think I can relate to Nicholas. However, I have a twist to his situation. I, too, noticed that my iPod volume is quieter listening through my home stereo (I'm using the line-out on the dock and Monster Cable's Apple iCable). Same can be said for the volume level coming out of my car stereo (there I use Monster Cable's iCarPlay FM Transmitter). A CD played through the CD player in either my home stereo or car stereo is much louder in volume.
I've also noticed that older CD's (pre-1999) that I rip to iTunes have lower volume levels than newer CD's or new songs purchased at iTunes Music store.
    Here's my twist:
I've been trying to compensate for the volume difference by playing with the Volume Adjustment per each song in iTunes. What happens is peculiar. Listening through headphones, the Volume Adjustment works. However, listening through my home stereo or car stereo, the Volume Adjustment does not have the same relative volume with respect to the new CD's or purchased iTunes music. The songs adjusted to raise the volume still sound quieter than the newer CD songs, while sounding louder through headphones.
Does anyone know if there is a relative volume level difference between headphones and external speakers (i.e. home stereo, car stereo). It doesn't sound possible, but hearing is believing!
I appreciate any insight anyone may have. I'm going nuts trying to normalize the volume level to the level of the louder new CD's!
