IPod Touch 1G (1st Generation) Battery Issue

Hello. I realize there has been a ton of conversation about battery life on the Touch - so much so that it makes it difficult to search through in the Forum. So here is my battery problem. Recently, I updated to the latest 3.1.3 firmware on my wife's iPod Touch. The other day I noticed that the iPod's battery only lasted about 4 or 5 hours and all we were doing was listening to music (through the headphone port). It had a full charge when we started and we just queued up a large playlist (NOT Pandora or anything streaming) and let it play. We did, however, have wifi on. Originally, I thought it was the battery going bad and started to look into replacement. First though, I ran some tests. Here they are in chronological order:
1. - Fully charged iPod, all apps installed, and wifi OFF. I played videos from the iPod for 5.5 hours straight (with auto dimming turned on). Pretty impressive. Must not be a bad battery.
2. - Fully charged iPod, deleted all non-Apple apps, and wifi ON. There were 2 email accounts and a Google calendar account set to fetch, but push was turned on in the main settings. After leaving sit (in sleep mode) for 2 hours, the battery was at 97%. Still pretty good.
3. - Fully charged iPod, wifi ON, with the following apps installed - Remote, Pandora, Facebook, Mobile Air Mouse Pro, Last.fm, Paper Toss (free version), Evernote, Google (apps), and Accura Precision Battery Monitoring. These are probably my most essential apps and most (if not all) are from large companies with a wide user base (assumed more reliable). I left it sit over night (in sleep mode) for 10 hours and had 60% battery life left in the morning. Something is draining the battery here.
So, it appears to have something to do with wifi and/or my apps. My understanding is that the iPod Touch is supposed to power down wifi while in sleep mode. Is this correct? Could it be a bug with the new firmware? I feel like this is a recent phenomenon with the iPod (don't remember ever having such poor battery life). I would just turn wifi off when not in use, but to me that seems like an unnecessary hassle. I mean, isn't wifi one of the main points of having an iPod Touch? Is anyone else having this issue with the latest firmware and similar apps installed? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I got my 32 gb 1st gen ipod touch in 2007. It has been used non stop since then, in january 2010 I started to notice that the battery was not lasting as it should (19 hours). in 2008 the battery still lasted for 29 hours of non tsop music (no wifi of course).
I got the battery replaced and the battery is behaving as it should (29 hours of non stop music playback).
as the other poster commented. if you use wifi continuously, this will die quicker. The same with games, since the hardware in the 1st gen is not as efficient as in the later generations.
i would say first disable wifi and test just continuous music playback and see if you get the advertised 22 hours of battery life. if you do nto get that then it is time for a new battery...

  • Ipod Touch 16gb 1st Generation Problems

Hello I bought my Ipod Toch 1st Generation June 6th 2008. I am having problems with my Ipod Touch, at first after about 2 weeks of owning it dust started to build up under the screen, I did not think much of this but after I really looked at how much dust was under the screen. If that is not bad enough just last week I noticed 3 dead pixels on the screen. I tried the pixel frozen test and did not fix, and this morning when I truned on my Ipod I noticed that I no longer have three pixels gone but now a whole chunk of the screen gone to "dead" pixels. I was just wondering if I could send it into Apple for them to fix it or if there was a way for me to fix it my self.
    Cheers, Eric

Unless you bought the Apple Care Protection plan your out of warranty. If you have that give them a call or visit your local store and they should be able to accommodate you.

  • IPod Touch 16GB 1st Generation - touch screen area stopped working

Hello there, the last 2 days I'm experiencing a problem with my 16GB 1st Generation iPod Touch. One cm under the top of the touch screen and for about 10mm height, the screen is not functioning. I noticed this when I was on the AppStore and tried to buy an app. Exactly at the "Buy" button and on full width the multitouch screen doesn't work at all (touch/scroll/zoom etc.). I use OS 3.0 and I've installed it from my PC with the latest iTunes. I use the latest OS since it's release day and only yesterday the problem appeared.
The iPod is protected with silicon case since day 1, also has a screen protector and it's never dropped, scratched or anything that could cause this problem. I believe the problem/bug/dysfunction it's software related, even tho, I've restored the iPod erasing all it's data to the factory settings with the last OS, the problem remains.
Do you suggest me to downgrade back in version 2.0 and see what happens? Do I have to to downgrade to version 1.0? Please advise cause here in Greece the service doesn't exist as in the rest European countries and as in the rest of the world who has official Applestores.
I use both Mac and PC with my iPod Touch, so you can suggest solutions for both platforms. (Leopard/Vista)
I'm waiting for a response as soon as possible, thanks in advance and please advise me as an experienced user
The iPod Touch is bought from US and brought here in Greece on January 2008. It's the iPod with the January Update in case you're wondering.
    Thanks for your time,
    Vangelis Makridakis.

Seems that the problem isn't software related.
I've downgraded to 2.2.1 from 3.0 and nothing happen.
I can't buy apps from AppStore, I can't join a WiFi network and much more...
Apple made *faulty digitizers* (touch screens) cause as I've searched on the internet, many others have the same problem. Since it's out of warranty, Apple is covered... BUT customers should know that even if they don't drop their device or if they protect them, no matter what, one day they won't be able to touch some random areas of their screens.
As a customer _I demand answer_ and also a replacement program for faulty digitizers since will be confirmed that the customer never dropped or scratched the faulty device.
Also, since in Greece (where I live) we don't have Apple official representation as the rest of the European countries, I probably will have to pay A LOT to Rainbow S.A for a digitizer replacement and also to wait about a MONTH to get my device back.
Thank you Apple for making perfect products with the chance becoming lemons instead of apples.
    Vangelis.

  • When i plug in my ipod touch (8gb, 3rd generation) it doesn't turn on and the apple logo flashes on and off. how can i stop it and turn on my ipod??????

when i plug in my ipod touch (8gb, 3rd generation) it doesn't turn on and the apple logo flashes on and off. before this it wouldn't turn on unless it was plugged in.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My ipod touch 8gb 3rd generation keeps dropping wifi.  I hate to reset since i've downloaded all of my itunes directly to my ipod.  Help!

My ipod touch 8gb 3rd generation keeps dropping wifi.  Doesn't matter where I am - happend ALL the time.  Almost useless now except for all of my songs!   We don't have any other problems with other computers in our house.  I have downloaded all of my songs from itunes directly to my ipod (I know, I wish I hadn't) so I hate to reset or I will lose them all.  I have never downloaded any updates (I know, I know!) so could this be my problem? How do I find downloads and what do I need?  Please help if you can!

If I reset my ipod will the wifi dropping stop?    I don't usually connect the ipod to my computer.  I charge it from the wall.  Should I be connecting to the computer instead?  Takes so much longer.  thanks for your help!
The reset may help with the WiFi issue, but you'll have to do the reset to be sure. It does seem to cure a wide variety of issues. At some point you should be connecting the iPod to your computer/iTunes account, otherwise you risk losing all of your music and other content if you have a problem with your iPod.

  • HT4623 my IPod Touch is a generation 3 with a camera and when i go into my settings and try to do what the instructions on your website say but in general i only have About and then the rest of the bars but i don't have one that says Software Update

my Ipod Touch is a generation 3 with a camera and when i go into the settings to look for the Software Update bar i don't have one

If you have cameras then you have  4G iPod. To update connect to your computer and update via iTunes
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
    - A 4G to 6.1.5  Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later

  • Wireless connection to ipod touch 8G 2nd generation

So can anyone advise me what wireless does the ipod touch 8G 2nd generation use (ie wireless b/g/n etc) & are they compatible with wireless n/wireless routers, or is wireless n backwards compatible/generic etc with all other wireless/devices.
    THANKS

All the iPod Touch models are b/g except for the newest 4th generation which is finally now "n"..
    Yes, they are backwards compatible.

I ahve a ipod touch of first generation model no.=MC540ll and i want to update my IOS of my ipod to 6.1.5 it requires 2 GB to start i want to know that after instillation the memory will be reduced or not?

A model MC540ll is a 4G iPod and can go to iOS 6.1.5.
Updating via wifi (settings>General>Software Update requires about 2.4 GB of storage available. After the update all but maybe 50 MB will be returned to for use. iOS 6 takes up only a little more that iOS 5 but the excess storage space is needed to perform the update.
If you update via iTunes yo do not need exces storage space

My iPod touch is having a little issue with the volume. When I plug in my headphones the volume works fine. When there aren't any headphones plugged in, no sound comes out from my iPod. When I go to turn up the volume, it still says headphones. I tried restarting it a few times, nothing worked. I looked up many tutorials, and still nothing did the trick. Any tips?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

Yes, there literally hundreds of video editing Apps for the iPod in the App Store if you want to edit directly on the iPod.
Alternatively, you can always download the video to your computer and edit it there with any video editor of your choice.
