Ipod touch 1st gen - to current ipod touch

Just got a new ipod touch. Not sure what generation it is, but it's the newest one available through the apple store and 32GB.
My car doesn't have an auxilliary unit and my ipod touch 1st generation had to be professionally wired to play through my stereo. The cord comes through my glove box and plugs right into my ipod. It seems that the new ipod touch uses a new, smaller plug which is not compatible with the old setup. I'm wondering if there's an adapater I can buy to plug into the new ipod touch that will allow me to use the old Auxilliary plug.
Thanks for any info/advice. I hope my question was easy to understand.

  • 1st Gen iPod Touch v. Current Gen Model

So, I'm debating about buying an iPod touch to help with time & task management (I'm a bit disorganized), and noticed that Apple has some refurbished models of the 1st generation iTouch for sale at a decent discount. I'm wondering what the difference really is between the two models in terms of functionality, bugs, etc? Any help would be much appreciated!

It's really going to depend on your budget. The 1st gen is a very nice device. With the appropriate system software, it can run apps from the apps store. Personally, though, I don't think very much of the Touch as a PDA but lots of people seem to make that work for them.
The 2nd gen is nice, too. I'm not sure, for what you're talking about using it for, though, that it's necessarily going to be worth the money. I rarely ever use the speaker or the volume buttons. If you're not playing lots of videos or using WiFi alot, both have perfectly respectable battery life.
If the 1st gen is a lot cheaper, it may well be worth it.
    Best of luck.

  • IPod 1st Gen (Touch wheel, 10GB) isn't recognized - missing software?

Recently, my 80GB video iPod decided to simply die on me, so I dug out my very first iPod, from 2001 or '02 I believe.
It turns on fine, can scroll through menus, but there's nothing on it anymore - plug it into my computer (firewire-to-firewire), and the iPod goes through a menu where there's the disc and a magnifying glass and eventually a check mark (connotating that everything's fine) - but it never docks onto the computer or shows up on iTunes.
I've SCOURED the internet for old iPod software updates, trying to find one early enough, so it can recognize it and I can restore and hopefully the problem will be fixed - but there's been SO many iPods since then, it's ancient, and no support was found anywhere.
Does anyone have a solution, or a link to the earliest of iPod updaters? I looked for documentation, but it was 9 years ago - I don't have the CD anymore or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*In the 'About' menu on the iPod, the current version that's installed is 1.5 - don't know if that matters.

The current version of iTunes should be able to connect to even the 1st gen iPod. The one you have is 2nd gen, if it's the one with the four clicking buttons around the touch wheel. I have one of those, and although I use it as my little emergency/maintenance FireWire startup drive (because the screen failed on it), it is still recognized by iTunes on my Mac. Over FireWire, of course.
The first thing you should try is to put it into Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Note: The procedure for your iPod is at the bottom, where it says +If you have an older iPod model without a Click Wheel+.
If that works, connect it to the computer. Hopefully it will appear both on your desktop and in iTunes. If so, use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize its software. The latest available version of the software for that iPod will be installed.
You may also want to try a different FireWire cable. It's just a regular cable, so you don't have to use the thin white one.

  • Twitter App. for 1st Gen. iPod Touch

I recently was having problems with the Twitter App. on my 1st Gen. iPod Touch and so decided to delete the app and re-download it again, like I had done a week earlier. During the download an error message popped up stating that I need ios 6 or later to download the app. Apple had updated the Twitter App on March 10th and I tried re-downloading March 14th, however a week earlier I was offered the opportunity to download an earlier version of Twitter. I am currently only able to use Twitter via Safari. Does anyone out there have a solution to get the official Twitter App. (And no "Buy a newer iPod stuff"!)
    Cheers
ps IF ANYONE FROM APPLE MANAGES TO SEE THIS CAN YOU PLEASE OFFER THE OPPRTUNITY TO DOWNLOAD LATER VERSIONS OF APPS FOR 1ST GEN IPOD TOUCH

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
Apple did not say why did not allow this option for iOS 3.1.3/1G iPod.
Apple does not monitor these forums. To make a suggestion to Apple:

  • I have an 1st gen Ipod touch that runs 3.1.3 IOS.

1st Gen Ipod touch 3.1.3 ios. No apps will work on this ios is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks

There are only a few apps currently available for the 1G iPod. There is no way to search for only compatible apps. You just have to look at the Requirements section of apps that interest you.
The only real solution is to purchase a newer model iPod

  • 1st Gen iPod touch not charge and not recognized by iTunes

I bought 1st gen iPod touch without cable.  It won't charge or be recognized by iTunes.  Purchased a new 1st gen cable, but still doesn't work.  Do I still have the wrong cable, or is there another problem?

Per the Apple store, the current dock-to-USB cable can be used with all iPod Touches.

  • IPhone 3G displays shorter list of WiFi compared to iPod touch 1st Gen

If you turn on the WiFi on the iPhone 3G and compare it to the iPod touch 1 Gen, you will see a much much shorter list of available networks.
I noticed that with the new iPod touch as well (short list).
And if you compare the new Late 2008 MacBook/Pro's with the previous MacBook/Pro's you will notice the same thing (the newer ones don't pick up as many wireless signals).
Is this a software thing, or a hardware problem?

There is no such message when 1st gen iPod Touch sits on top of iPod Hi-Fi, it simply does not charge without any explanation.
With 2nd gen Touch they changed the insides of the device, thus excluding compatibility, but the 1st gen remains the same — and now it doesn't work properly with Apple's own accessory which was compatible just days ago.
That's a crying shame, really. I hope that Apple is aware of the situation and currently works to fix this problem.

My 1st gen ipod shuffle, since the last update is seen as my ipod touch everytime I plug it in... any suggestions?
I have tried to clear temp folder, uninstalled, and reinstalled itunes version 10.5.1.42... ipod touch 4th gen is seen fine. But when I eject this and plug in my old shuffle... itunes still reports it as ipod touch.

The only suggestion I have is to try and rename your device in iTunes to something else by clicking it's current name from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and typing in a new one.

  • Ipod touch 1st gen will not sync my apps

I've just bought my youngest son a cheap second hand Ipod touch 1st gen. I currently run an Iphone 4 and an Ipod touch 4th gen which both sync no problem but this new Ipod will sync everything I have (music, films, books, contacts etc but not the apps. When I click onto the apps section within the new Ipod on iTunes the availabe apps are greyed out and whereas I can click the "sync" box on all other sections there is no response when I click that box in apps.
Please help me, the other Ipod touch is for my daughter and i can not imaging what will happen come christmas if she has all my apps but my son doesn't. Especially Angry Birds!!!!!!

    - Is the iPod signed into the same iTunes account that purchased the apps? (Settings>Store)
    - Are the apps compatible with a 1G iPod with iOS 3.1.3.  Many apps require a later model iPod or later iOS.l

  • Can I use my 1st gen ipod touch as hard drive

I have a 32 gb 1st gen ipod touch and I want to use some of it to store items/files that have nothing to do with itunes. How can I get this ipod as hd/itune device?

  • 1st Gen iPod touch Keeps Having to Be Re-Registered with iTunes

My 1st Gen. iPod touch works very well, with one exception. Every few weeks I'll turn it on and I'll get the picture of the cable and the iTunes icon - which is what you get the first time you use your iPod touch and means it needs to be registered with iTunes. This will happen both if I plug it in to my charger and when I just simply turn it on with the power button. I'll then take the touch to my computer and use my syn cable and plug it in. When the iTunes window comes up, on the left column it shows my touch, but the name I'd given it has gone back to the default name. I'll rename it again, but again within a week or two the same thing happens again. I'm stumped. I'm using an iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 and a white MacBook, also with 10.5.6. All my software on the touch, MacBook and iMac are up to date. I have very few apps on my touch and lots of room left on it to store stuff. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi Brenda,
That screen, with the iTunes icon and the USB cable, means the iPod is in recovery mode.
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 provides more information about the mode and how-to use it to restore your iPhone or iPod touch.
Are you using any 3rd-party accessories with the iPod touch?
Does the accessory have the Made for iPod logo?
Try restoring the iPod again, setting it up as a new iPod, and testing it without any 3rd-party accessories.
If the issue persists, the iPod may need hardware repair. Just make a reservation to have a Genius take a look at it or call AppleCare.
