Hi cfoose,
Try the general troubleshooting tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1575#faq3
If the issue persists, the iPod may need hardware repair. Just request repair online, make a reservation to have a Genius at a local Apple retail store take a look at it, or call AppleCare.

  • My iPod Touch 4G cannot be turned on and is not recognized.

Okay, so, this is a long story, but I registered on this forum just to share it with someone, see if anyone had a similar problem.
A month or two ago, the home button on my iPod Touch 4G broke. Okay. So I started using that assistive touch feature. The one with the home button on the screen. Well, that's the background of this story. Let's get into the real meat.
This morning, there I am, waiting to get into class, watching a documentary on my iPod Touch. I grab my two-year old charging cable, plug it up on the PC I always use in class and move it around- it's so old, it needs to be at that right spot to charge up. Well, it starts charging, but once I unplug it and plug it again... something weird happens. With the PC. It gives me a "USB Device not recognized" error.
I thought the cable had finally gone pfft. Not a problem, I had a newer, better one back home. So I go back to watching my documentary- the device is working fine- and when it comes time to class, I press the lock button and put it back on my backpack. Fast forward five-six hours. Lunch time. I pull out my iPod Touch, press the lock button and... nothing.
Black screen. Nothing happens. No sound, no video. Okay, weird. I press the lock button again and again, and still, nothing happens. Maybe I need to turn it on? I hold onto the lock button, but it doesn't turn on or off. Maybe it needs to charge? I borrow a friend's cable, plug it up to a wall charger- the one from Apple- and... nothing happens. I take that cable, plug it up to a PC, and nothing happens. Except for the "USB Device not Recognized" error.
So that's where I am. I can't go to DFU mode cause my home button's borked up. Charging, pressing the lock button, reinstalling iTunes, nothing works. It just sits there. But I know it's not bricked up, because when I plug it up, it gives me that "USB Device not recognized" error.
I'm probably taking it to technical assistance tomorrow, but I'd at least like to hear if anyone had the same problem. All my stuff's there: my Things app with my homework stuff, my TV Show Tracker app, and while I did back app data to the iCloud, I'm not sure I can just put that data on my brother's iPod Touch. Help?

First try the following since it appears y have a computer problem:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    I would start with
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Run this to help if it identifies the cause
iTunes for Windows: Device Sync Tests
Have you tried on another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem?
    Next
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode use one of these programs
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My ipod nano 5th gen. wont turn on and is not being recognized on my mac or itunes

my ipod nano 5th gen. wont turn on and is not being recognized on my mac or itunes

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting?  After leaving the Nano to sit and charge for at least 30 minutes, try resetting it by pressing and holding both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear. You'll want to make sure the Hold Switch is not in the On position as well.

ok so i have an ipod touch 2nd generation and i have had it for many years.   A few months ago it would not turn on and kept telling me to connect to itunes but the problem is my itunes library is set up at my dads house and i live with my mom.  so i tried connecting it to my laptop to see if it would turn on. well it asked me if i wanted to restore it and i was really tried and couldnt think what restored meant so i clicked yes! and it wiped out my entire library! i was in tears because i had had $50 worth of music and apps that werent backed up!  so i sent my ipod to my dad and got everything sorted out.  but last night i tried to turn my ipod on and it wouldnt turn on so i just plugged it in to charge and left it. i came back to see if it was done and it wouldnt turn on and it told me to connect to the itunes store. i probably have about $50 worth of music that is not backedup this time!  omg i want to cry!  i am smart enough to not pulg in into my laptop because i know what restore means now! and i have tried holding the buttons down and everything and i let it charge all day!  what do i do! please please help me! if i send it to my dads will all of my music that is not backed up sync into my library? or will i lose it all?!?! please please help me!! • Ipod does not turn on and is not recognized in Itunes and computer

For some reason, one day, my ipod nano 4th generation just stopped working. On the device manager, I can see that the apple mobile USB driver is installed but it is not listed as an external hard drive on my computer. When I plug my ipod in, I have to push the top and the middle button together until it makes the sound when the computer recognizes a new USB. Then, it keeps saying 'waiting for ipod' and I eventually get a 1601 error message. I've tried everything, and it doesn't work at all. do you guys know how to fix this? This is just making me angry and furious.

I have the same problem as from this morning my ipod nano just won't turn on and when I plug into computer its recognising an external hard drive but NOT syncing with itunes....Its just gone completely dead!!! Can anyone help?

  • Ipod touch will not turn on and is not reading in the usb port

ipod touch will not turn on or connect to my computer

I just had a similar problem and tried all of the reboot techniques with no success. I knew it had to be a connection issue inside the iPod, and grasping at straws, I sprayed a little WD-40. I dried it off and let it sit overnight. Today at lunch I plugged it in to my wall charger and it began charging.
***FYI I know they don't recommend spraying WD-40 on your iPod, but it was a last resort for me. I was at the point of paying to send it in for repairs or throwing it away. I wouldn't try this unless you are ready to throw yours away too.

  • My 5th gen ipod touch dropped face down (with case) and now it will not turn on and is not recognized by my PC.  Can anyone help me? I had alot of videos and pictures on it and don't want to loose them.

Last week my 5th generation ipod touch dropped face down onto the ground.  When picked up the screen was black and did not turn back on.  I tried to connect it to the laptop but it did not recognize the ipod.  Also when it is plugged into the laptop the area by the camera gets warm like it is charging.  But still has a black screen.  I've tried to reset and count to 10, but nothing happends.  Is there anything that can be done to fix this?  Or is it completely dead?  Somebody, anybody please help.

  • IPod Touch Not Turning on and IS NOT Detected by iTunes!!!!

Hello, recently I bought the new iPod Touch 4g! It was all fine and working for about 12 days, but then it started getting really hot and the battery lasted less than an hour while listening to music. I took my iPod Touch in, and a genius told me it was a software problem and I had to do a clean restore (as a new iPod.) Since the clean restore, my iPod has been working fine... until this morning. I had it syncing with my Mac overnight, but when I came to turn it on... I got a black screen... nothing. I unplugged the iPod and tried to turn it on again, but I got no response! I tried plugging the iPod into my wall charger, but nothing happened! I finally gave up and plugged the iPod back into my Mac, but iTunes didn't do anything! HELP!!!!!

Since it does not charge anymore, there's no way that iTunes will recognize your device when the battery is empty. You're still under warranty, make an appointment at your next Apple Store and bring it in again.

  • My ipod will not turn on, and is not found by itunes.

It just DOES NOT turn on. At all.
And i've tried syncing it with itunes, but it doesn't pick it up,
I have a feeling it may have something to do with the fact that it's got chunks missing and there was a leak in my bag so water may have gotten to it.
But what can i do about this?
    Please please please help.
Btw, I didn't buy my ipod touch4g from apple.
But I have 3 year warranty on it from the place I bought it.
    Help!

If you purchased less than one year ago you should still have the Apple warranty.  To check:
