IPod Touch 2nd Gen (iOS 4.2.1) stops playing certain songs but screen remains.

During playback, the Touch stops playing on certain specific songs, but the screen remains as is (that is, doesn't go back to menu or black). I suspect "bad blocks/sectors" on the memory chip, but have no way of checking. Pressing pause and then play again doesn't help. Skipping back to previous song and then forward doesn't help. Skipping forward does not work (next song doesn't play). This affects only certain very specific and recently added songs.
I've tried Reseting (erasing all content) and Restoring from backup. Problem still occurs.
Next step is to Reset (erase all content) and setup as a new ipod. Then reload music content. All content is AAC at 192kbps or lower.
Anyone have any thoughts?

If the songs play OK in iTunes on the comnputer:
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync/delete all music and resync
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

IPod touch (2nd gen.) not seeing mic 99% of the time, but *does* rarely.

I'm unable to use a microphone with this device, almost always being prompted "No microphone available" when I try to use Skype or Voice Memos with either of two different mic-bearing headphones. I've listed the headphones I have below.
(*) The plugs are inserted fully as far as they will go in the headphone jack.
(*) I have the latest iPhone OS installed.
(*) I've tested the iFrogz mic with an acquaintance's iPhone, and the mic works.
(*) On a single occasion I did get the TouchMic to work on a Skype test call to my voice mail, but never again with either mic.
(*) On a single occasion I had the opportunity to test with a different acquaintance's Apple headphones, which again worked.
I need to know if this feature is working only intermittently for some physical reason and therefore I need repair/replacement, or if I'm just not understanding some part of how to use this thing with a mic.
In particular, anyone have an idea why I'd be able to get the mic recognized on one occasion but not others, if this is something other people have experienced?

Go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings. You'll have to reenter your network login info, but it should work after that.

I have an ipod touch 1st gen 32 GB. It stops playing music randomly. The battery has been replaced and I've tried restoring iOS 3.1.3 as a clean install but the problem persists. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

The battery died so I had it replaced. Now it stops playing music (It was doing this before with the old battery when plugged into power cable)... it won't even make it through a whole track. I have tried turning off and on, turned off autolock and restored several times to 3.1.3 with no apps, just music but the problem persists.

Thank you for the speedy reply! I suspected it to be a hardware fault but found a lot of people online had experienced the same problem. What should I do? Obviously it is well out of warranty and the battery is literally brand new. Seems a sad waste if it cannot be repaired. I've yet to find a definitive answer or what to do, be it contact Apple etc....

Why is my wifi on my ipod touch 2nd gen not working?

Can someone help with the wifi on my ipod touch 2nd Gen? Yesterday it suddenly stopped connecting to anything wifi. No settings were changed. The only thing I did was go to itunes for the first time in well, forever. I always use it on my computer to go in itunes, not my ipod. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I could still get on Safari after that but I don't really remember. At some point in the evening it stopped connecting. I can't get on Safari, my mail won't refresh, it would connect to the app store, nothing. Sometimes a message does pop up saying there was a problem connecting to the server. I can't figure this out, internet on my computer is running perfectly fine. My ipod wifi is on, airplane mode off. When I go into my settings it shows my network and that it's connected. I haven't connected it or synced it to the new itunes. I actually haven't downloaded the update yet. Ipod is up to date though without the new sync. Can anyone help me out? I'm very confused.

Does the iPod connect to other networks?
Try:
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost

- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Are you sure you have a 2G iPod? A 2G can go to IOS 4.2.1 via:

Update iPod touch 2nd gen to iOS 4.2

Hi,
I'm having a problem updating my iPod touch 2nd gen to iOS 4.2. When I connect it to iTunes (version 9.2.1 as I'm still on OS 4.11) and click "Update" it returns an error message saying "This iTunes version is the latest version (9.2.1)" and no update will happen.
I'm willing to believe this is due to the fact that I'm using Tiger, but surely Apple would want even users of older versions of their software and hardware to update their stuff, wouldn't they? Anyway, I hope there is a workaround for this, as I'm very keen on starting to use Airplay.

IPod Touch 2nd Gen. / iOS 4.2 update, NO AirPlay!!!

I updated my iPod Touch 2nd Gen. this morning to iOS 4.2, and found that there is no AirPlay icon in ANY of my media apps (including the native players). There is also NO "text search" in Safari. I checked the "About" section on my Touch and it says I am indeed running 4.2. What gives??? Did 2nd Gen. users get left out again???

I have 2 second generation iPod Touches and they both have Airplay.

or some type of compatible powered speakers that can use Airplay?
You need to have on of the above for the Airplay to show up I believe but not positive.
I have 3 Airport Expresses hooked up to 3 different stereos throughout the house and the garage.
When I open up my playlists and choose a song to play, then I am given a choice of what Airport Express I want to play to after hitting the Airplay button on the right of the volume bar.
So, mine works.
Not sure why yours isn't.

I know there used to be apps that worked before but I deleted them. When I tried to re-download them again they say they won't work. Options?

I need to downgrade my ipod touch 2nd gen Mc model back to 3.1.3 because that is what my default firmware was when i first bought it. iOS 4.2.1 is slow on my ipod, is there a way maybe if apple can reset my ipod touch back to 3.1.3?

Again, there is NO legit way to go back at all.

I just updated the 4.2.1 update on my ipod touch 2nd gen. I recently had the 4.2 update and it worked perfectly with my car. Now my car wont read it. Thank you for your constructive response. I also have lost all my music after upgrading to 4.2. The official Apple solution is to sync again with the "computer you usually use to synch". That is quite impossible, since I am traveling away from home where the desktop is that is the usual sync connection. All I have with me is my MacBook Pro, which is also authorized for iTunes, but contains different music. The iPod Touch (2nd generation) shows about 4 gb of audio content, but starting the "Music" application gets a "no content" message.
Let's cut the unhelpful posts about forum rules and user agreements and focus on help for what is clearly a common problem for those who have upgraded. Thank you.

I had to restore my iPod touch 2nd gen, and cannot reload iOS

My iPod Touch 2nd gen stopped showing up on my computer and syncing. So i had to restore it to factory and now cannot reload the iOS all i see is the arrow saying plug it in to itunes (it is) itunes cannot see it and i can't fix it, sync it or find where to get the ios to add it again. It means the device is in recovery mode. You'll need to reconnect it to iTunes and restore it again.
You may need to connect it in recovery mode manually using the instructions in this Apple support document.
