IPod touch 2nd gen restored 3 times in a week - hardware or firmware issue?

I have a 2nd gen 32 gig ipod touch that I purchased just before christmas. Everything has been just great until this past week. It has crashed hard..3 times now. I get the apple logo and it won't boot any further.
Each time has been random, crashed once while watching a movie, once in safari and once while playing a game.
I've just restored it, again. Anyone have any ideas? Firmware issue? Or hardware issue? Is there any way for me to roll back to a previous firmware?
Is anyone else having the same problem?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'd hate to have to send it back to Apple.
Thanks in advance!

OK now I get it.
You're going to have to do a full restore to factory settings and begin adding the music, video and apps back one category at a time.
Don't get in a rush, you need to know where/when the problem starts.
If every thing's fine for the week with music and video but crashes the day after you install "that app." then you'll know.
Also some apps have caused trouble in the past but you'll have to list them for anyone else to tell.
Just a note of warning : you may have a music or video file as the problem but you may also have a "quantity" problem.
The first will be fixable with a new file, from Apple(iTunes) if it's not something you created, so you'll need to have at least a rough idea of what was on your computer when the crashes started.
Make notes if you have to!
If the crashes continue then it's the Apple store, it could still be hardware or some program corruption, but at least you'll have eliminated a few contenders.

Try plugging your ipod into your computer. Then start up itunes. Let it load everything. Then click on your ipod and play a song from your ipod's library. Not your itunes library. If it plays the song, then go ahead and stop it, disconnect your ipod, and check the content once again.
I had the same problem and beleive it or not, this worked. I synced my ipod like 5 times before finding this answer on the web. Let me know if I need to clerify anything.

  • Help restoring iPod touch 2nd gen to OS 3.1.3

I have an ipod Touch 2nd gen that had been updated to OS 3.1.3. I haven't had many problems with it. The last time I had to restore it was when iTunes 9.1 was new and I downgraded back to iTunes 8.
I keep getting a message that there is purchased items on the iPod and do I want to transfer them to the Mac if not then it will be deleted from the ipod. I click on "don't transfer", but the next time I try to sync I get the same message.
I tried restoring the ipod and it keeps insisting that I should "restore and update" and I don't get a "restore" option. I don't want to update to OS 4.
The odd thing is iTunes apparently keeps tossing the iPod2,13.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw and iPod2,12.2.1_5H11aRestore.ipsw into the trash without my permission.
I tried updating from a backup copy and this time it let me click "restore" but then apparently it phoned home to Apple and it said the ipod was "not eligible" to restore to OS 3.1.3.
I tried turning off the internet connection and then it refused to restore at all. >:(
The only thing that I can think of is that iTunes is either 1. trying to force me to buy an update I don't want or 2. that it thinks I have to update the iPod Touch because I bought an iPhone 4. >:(
I really preferred the days when we could just run a standalone ipod updater. Does anyone know of a way I can force the ipod Touch to be restored either to the original iOS 2 or the updated iOS 3 (which afterall I did pay for !)?
    Thanks.

You cannot restore to OS 3.1.3 simply because Apple has stopped signing that particular firmware. What happens is for every firmware your device creates unique keys knows as SHSH blobs. For you to be able to update or restore to that firmware Apple checks those blobs and signs them (ticks them off). However if Apple has stopped signing them which it has for OS1 OS2 OS3 O4.0 & OS4.1 you can no longer go to those particular firmwares. Currently Apple is only signing OS 4.2.1 firmware so you can only restore to that one.
Note- There is one final hope for you to restore to 3.1.3. Google SHSH blob extractor.

  • HT4972 previously used apps won't work after system restore?ipod touch 2nd gen.?

My son forgot his passcode so I had to restore his ipod touch, 2nd gen.  After the restore, many of his apps no longer work.  He had Netflix, Facebook, Angry Birds.  They now all say they require ios 4.3 or 5.0.  Does anyone know how to get these apps back on his ipod?  thanks!

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • Nike + app missing on iPod touch (2nd gen) after restore

Memory errors prompted a wipe and restore of my 32GB iPod touch (2nd gen) system. The restore and subsequent reapplication of the 3.x upgrade produced a system without Nike+ software.
I've had considerable issues with the reliability and accuracy of the software in the past, but now it simply isn't there.
Has anyone else seen this and does anyone know how to restore that application? (Since it is not available in the app store.)
    Thx

Well, i have the same problem, but when i go to settings the nike app it just doesn't appear, so, i'm not able to turn it on. Is there any other way to download the nike app?

It means the device is in recovery mode.  You'll need to reconnect it to iTunes and restore it again.
You may need to connect it in recovery mode manually using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • How to restore iPod Touch (2nd gen.) to iOS 4.1?

While away from home, I updated my iPod Touch (2nd gen.) to iOS 4.2.1 using a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.6.3 and iTunes 10.1. I returned home, plugged the iPod into my PowerMac G5 with MacOS 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2.1 and, yup, got the message that I will need to install iTunes 10.1 if I want to sync with iOS 4.2. Of course, iTunes 10.1 is not compatible with MacOS 10.4.11.
I would gladly downgrade the iPod Touch to iOS 4.1 but I cannot find it on the Apple website. I do have a file "iPod2,14.1_8B117Restore.ipsw" in the iPod Software Updates folder in iTunes which might work, but as the iPod Touch is no longer recognized, I do not know how I would do that.
    Any help appreciated.
    Herb Goodfriend

    Thanks for the replies.
I did search the forums for "iOS 4.2", "iTunes 9.2.1", "iPod Touch" etc. but I did not use the term "downgrading". So I didn't find the answer to my question.
I am not a big fan of Leopard, especially as there are Classic applications that I still use (no Classic in Leopard), but the PM G5 has more than enough hard disk capacity to install Leopard on a separate partition or drive so that I can run iTunes 10.1. If rebooting is a PITA, then I can use the MacBook Pro (running OS 10.6) to sync the iPod Touch.

  • Why is my wifi on my ipod touch 2nd gen not working?

Can someone help with the wifi on my ipod touch 2nd Gen? Yesterday it suddenly stopped connecting to anything wifi. No settings were changed. The only thing I did was go to itunes for the first time in well, forever. I always use it on my computer to go in itunes, not my ipod. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I could still get on Safari after that but I don't really remember. At some point in the evening it stopped connecting. I can't get on Safari, my mail won't refresh, it would connect to the app store, nothing. Sometimes a message does pop up saying there was a problem connecting to the server. I can't figure this out, internet on my computer is running perfectly fine. My ipod wifi is on, airplane mode off. When I go into my settings it shows my network and that it's connected. I haven't connected it or synced it to the new itunes. I actually haven't downloaded the update yet. Ipod is up to date though without the new sync. Can anyone help me out? I'm very confused.
    Thanks

Does the iPod connect to other networks?
    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>GeneralReset>Reset Network Settings

  • IPod touch 2nd gen can no longer buy any songs

I realise the answer to this is because the iPod touch 2nd gen is too old but I want to check. It runs ios 4.2.1 and my wife wanted to buy a couple songs via the iTunes app over wifi. Everytime she tried to buy a song after inputting her password it went through the motions but just as it changed from waiting under downloads it then vanished and didn't download. I thought it was a problem with her account but the ame song downloaded fine on her iPad running 5.1.1 and also on our laptop in iTunes.
I realise many apps are no longer compatible etc but to not even be able to download songs now is pretty disheartening. Yes we can buy on the laptop and sync but essentially the wifi on the iPod touch is a bit useless now. It might as well just be an ipod now!
    Cheers

    For purchasing problem
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Setings>iTunes and App Store and sign ut and sign back in
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up

To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • I need help diagnosing my iPod Touch 2nd Gen

    Hi,
I have an iPod Touch 2nd gen (8 gig) that I won from work over a year ago. There is no warranty and I was hoping to get this fixed myself, if at all possible.
Last weekend I was visiting my parents house in pretty hot weather. I meant to take the iPod out and put it int my pocket, but had forgotten it, of all places, on the dashboard of the car.
I can imagine it got way over 100 degrees and it was there for at least 3 hours time.
After that incident the iPod would not turn on. When pressing the top power button, the Apple logo would appear, but after a few minutes it would shut itself off. The normal "on" button in the bottom middle had no effect at all on it.
When I finally got home I tried doing all the steps I was able to do on my own.  Restore, reset, recharged…. ect.
The current status is that the iPod works great…. when plugged into syncing mode from my Mac at home. When disconnected though, it will only stay on for about a minute before shutting itself off and never being able to show more than the Apple logo when pressing the top power button.
I have an external recharger that connects directly to a wall socket that also will not let the iPod stay on. Just seems to work when synced to my Mac. Battery power says it is fully charged.
Very long explanation but I was wondering if anyone has run into this themselves, and if so what did you do to fix this? I am wanting to believe it is a dead battery but wanted some insight from others before taking any action.
    Thanks all for reading this.

Likely a batter problem since high temperatures destroy a battery.  I wold make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to see what they say.  It is free except for your time.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen (iOS 4.2.1) stops playing certain songs but screen remains.

    iPod Touch 2nd Gen 32GB
    iOS 4.2.1
    roughly 4.89 GB free
During playback, the Touch stops playing on certain specific songs, but the screen remains as is (that is, doesn't go back to menu or black).  I suspect "bad blocks/sectors" on the memory chip, but have no way of checking.  Pressing pause and then play again doesn't help.  Skipping back to previous song and then forward doesn't help.  Skipping forward does not work (next song doesn't play).  This affects only certain very specific and recently added songs.
I've tried Reseting (erasing all content) and Restoring from backup.  Problem still occurs.
Next step is to Reset (erase all content) and setup as a new ipod.  Then reload music content.  All content is AAC at 192kbps or lower.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

If the songs play OK in iTunes on the comnputer:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
