IPod Touch 3.0 update fails on my iPod, endless loop of failing updates

Here is the situation. I had version 2.2.1 on my iPod touch, I bought the 3.0 update, and then I began the update after connecting the recognized iPod to the computer. After doing so, my iPod began the update and right after the update finishes, my iPod says that it could not update to 3.0.
After that, it became an 'Unknown Device' in my computer.
Then I decided to take it to the Genius Bar twice, and they replaced the iPod and assured me that the update should work. After that, I came home and began the update.
This became a repeat of what happened with my first iPod. It did the exact same thing except instead of showing up as an 'Unknown Device', the iPod showed up in recovery mode. I thought that I would just forget the update at that point and just restore my iPod. Apparently, I can't. iTunes lets me "Restore and Update", not "Restore", which means I must try to update it to 3.0 again.
I did the "Restore and Update" three times, with the same situation happening over and over. Suddenly, it showed up as an 'Unknown Device' again and now I'm back where I started.
Will I have to go back to the Genius Bar and have it replaced again or can I fix this at home?

    The logo is saying connect it to your computer with iTunes installed on the computer.  I assume when yo do this that the iPod is not seen in iTunes. to make iTunes appear try:
    - Resetting the iPod:
    Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
    button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Place the iPod in recovery mode.  See:

    If the iPod appears in iTunes restore the iPOd.  If not I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I don't want to go without my ITouch.  I really don't want to go without it but I dont want to have to purchase a new one.  The battery life is abysmal, and I am reluctant to upgrade my ios system to ios8 because all I ever see are complaints about upgrades killing the battery.  I am still on ios6.  When I upgraded my macbook pro (which is now DEAD) the battery got worse. 
    I am just sick of it.  I called apple about my itouch battery and the help was terrible.  All they were telling me to do was do a restart and UPGRADE TO THE LATEST IOS TO SEE IF THAT SOLVES THE BATTERY PROBLEM.  They would not even tell me what to do if that would not work.  Very rude.I kept asking and I finally had to find out myself through my own research that they cant replace the battery; instead they send you a refurbished ipod.  They never told me that on the phone and they kept giving me the run around when I kept asking them what I should do if the IOS upgrade did not work or made the battery worse.  Hopefully someone can answer my initial question.  Thanks guys.  I have a charger that I sometimes use plugged in to the ipod ( not all the time, I know that is bad for the battery)  and I thought my battery life should be better than it is because I sometimes use it on the charger  ( it should save the battery).

    Not that I know of. You can do the exchange at an Apple store if they have refurbished ones in stock

    Correct. The 3G iPod does not have the hardware to support an iOS version higher than 5.1.1
    To more easily find compatible apps:
    iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
    Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
    Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
    App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
    App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
    You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    -When it says place the iPod in recovery mode use this program instead of the buttons.
    RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    I can't get the ipod touch to backup, update, or even reset.  Whats going on, and how do I fix this?

    For the iPod not backing up, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location (you can delete after a successful backup) so iTunes has to create an entire new file.  It is located here:
    iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.

    Two days ago, I bought an iPod Touch 8GB in the Apple Store of the 5th avenue. I asked if the firmware included the january updates and the Apple salesman told me all iPods were up to date.
    Unfortunately, this was wrong. I paid full price for an iPod Touch without the updates, and I can't find any link to customer assistance for such an issue on apple.com. Since I already left NY, I can't go to an Apple Store, too.
    Anybody knows what to do? I find it really amazing that 1 month after the updates, such a problem can occur.

    Try giving AppleCare in France a call and explain the situation. Keep calm and ask if it's possible that you send in proof of purchase in return for credit on your iTunes account for the difference:

    This is not my problem. However, I think it may be related to an old speaker. I was using the 30 pin adapter for about a week after the upgrade to 7.1.2. But I think with the update the speaker won't work anymore. I will try with a new speaker system. Thank you for trying to assist.
