IPod touch 3g can't update.

I have an iPod touch 3g (A1318) 32gb model.  Because I've mostly used it for podcasts/music and some old apps I've been fine with it being on OS 4.1
I have recently tried to update it via my 2013 iMac to 5.1.1 via the auto update function.  No go.
I then tried to update it to other versions of OS 4 (4.2.1 & 4.3) by using the alt key to redirect to downloaded ipsw.
Everytime I get an error message saying
The iPod " - - - - " could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.
I have entered the serial number on Apple's web page that tells you what gen. the product is, it too states it is a 3rd gen.
Yes the ipsw are for iPod touch 3g.
I don't really want to have to jailbreak an iPod, so can anyone offer some help.

iOS: Restore error 3194 or 'This device isn't eligible for the requested build'

On my ipod touch, i can't seem to get the imessage app.. I have updated my itunes and even restored the ipod to factory settings with the latest update. Maybe the ipod is too old? Is that even a thing? Is there another app I can download to have access to my contacts with imessage?

That comes with iOS 5 (Settings>General>About>Version) and only the 3G abd later iPods can go to iOS 5 or later

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

  • I have first iPod touch, but can't after restore can't reinstall some apps I bought because they have been updated in iTunes to newer versions

I have first iPod touch, but can't after restore can't reinstall some apps I bought because they have been updated in iTunes to newer versions?  I am giving this to my grandchildren and their favorite game Skee-Ball updated and now can't reinstall on iPod touch.

If you still have the apps on the iPod you can delete them from the computer and then transfer the apps from the iPod t the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
Next would be to look in your computer backups file for a version of the apps that works with the iOS on the iPod.
Otherwise you are out of luck.

  • While performing a system update, I shut down my iPod touch. Can the pictures on my iPod be recovered if my iPod was not backed up?

While performing a system update, I shut down my iPod touch. Can the pictures on my iPod be recovered if my iPod was not backed up?
iPod is fourth generation, the system update was a little over half complete.
I want to get the pictures off the iPod so that I can keep them. Is there any way to do this?

    Maybe,
    - if when you connect the iPod to your computer you can make a backup? If yes yo can restore from that backup
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    - Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backup dated when you started the update. the first stiep of an update is iTunes making a backup.
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • My ipod touch was in an update and froze.  I tried to restore and an apple just stays on front and the screen stays white

My Ipod touch was in an update and froze.  It shows a blank screen and sometimes shows an apple.  Now it will not restore.   What do I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 3rd Gen Ipod touch 5.1.1 update grays out wifi

After updating my 3rd Gen ipod touch, I can no longer use wifi. The wifi box is grayed out. I have reset the network connection settings, and have reset the ipod back to factory settings and still nothing. I see that this has happened to lots of iphone users but havent heard much about ipod touch. I wont even think about updating my iphone until a bug fix comes out. So far Apple is saying it is a hardware issue, but theres no way. No way thousands of people are having a hardware issue just after a software update. Can anyone help?
Also now only about 20% of my songs will load on the ipod and the screen is frozen. Great

One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
