IPod Touch 3rd Gen Problem.

A little problem with my iPod Touch 3rd Gen, when i connect it up to my iTunes to try and update to the new iOS 5 it says there are no new updates? My iPod is currently running on 4.2.1,I know it is out in the U.K as my friends have been able to download it without a problem.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks,

Sorry, but Apple never referred to any 8GB iPod touch as "3rd generation". Some dealers erroneously did, but not Apple. You must be misremembering or you misread the information presented at the time.

  • IPod touch 3rd gen artwork problem

Hi I have an iPod touch 3rd gen (early 2010) and it has worked perfectly with just one minor nuisance - album artwork.
I am able to sync every single album artwork that I've assigned to each song from iTunes to my iPod touch, and they do show up properly when I'm playing the song. However, some album artwork won't show up in the "Unlock" screen even though I'm playing the song at the moment.
This problem cannot be solved by deleting and resyncing the songs in concern. Only by updating the iOS firmware (which, as we're well aware, only takes place once in a blue moon) would the songs whose album artwork won't show up in the "Unlock" screen show up again.
The problem is very annoying because if I accidentally remove some older songs from my iPod touch and wish to sync them back again, their album artwork would no longer show up on the "Unlock" screen, assuming that these songs are "new" (as in post-major iOS firmware update).
I hope the above is descriptive enough of the issue. Can anyone kindly point out what's happening, or hopefully redirect me to a similar thread where this problem has also been encountered and solved?
Thank you very much for your kind attention!

Did you check for software updates for your ipod or are you on the latest version possible?
In case the firmware file (*.ipsw) on your computer is damaged, try to delete the ipod software file located in C:\Documents and Settings[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates to make iTunes download a new copy when you connect in recovery mode.

  • My iPod Touch 3rd Gen is having problems with the touch screen being unresponsive, too responsive, freezing and constantly resizing. Is this a common problem? Is there a fix?

My iPod Touch (3rd Gen) is having problems with the touch screen being unresponsive, too responsive, freezing and constantly resizing. It varies between not responding when I tap the screen and acting as if I double-tap or tap and hold when I tap. Every so often it freezes for a minute or so and then comes back. The scren is constantly changing sizes too such that I often can't see most of the top status bar or other edges. This makes typing almost impossible, ruins most games and generally makes everything difficult, but otherwise the iPod is working correctly. Powering off, shutting down apps, letting it sit have not worked. This has happened once before months ago, but the issue resolved itself somehow. Is this a common problem? Is there a fix?

  • Will Apple cover me if updating to iOS5 on ipod Touch 3rd gen ruins/bricks it?

I have heard stories of some people's apple products not working/bricked after attempting to upgrade to iOS5.
I have a 1.5 year old ipod Touch 3rd gen. No warranty on it from Apple (tho I do have one from Square Trade for ADH, but I called them and they said if it is a software issue, they don't cover it.)
I am very concerned about d/ling the ios5 upgrade and it ruining my ipod touch.  In effect, I will take a device that could fetch almost $200 on ebay (which I could then use to upgrade to a Touch 5gen), and turn it into a worthless piece of junk if I upgrade and it ruins it.
Also, I know that they have released 5.0.1 (beta I believe?) for update.   I still read stories on here from people waiting until now (Nov, a month after it was first released when so many people tried to d/l it and had terrible problems), but now are still getting network timed out error msgs, etc.
So is there ANY protection from Apple if their update should screw my ipod touch??
Should I just wait longer for a final, stable version  of ios 5? (like v5.1)  Or just totally skip the iOS 5 upgrade and stay safe with iOS 4?  I don't know that it is really worth the $200 loss risk to upgrade to iOS5.  (i.e. 3rd gen doesn't have the ability to find and lock/wipe my lost touch, etc.)
I do know that I should:
    1) install itunes 10.5 anew on my laptop  (itunes and syncing WAS done on my tower, until I just got it back from being serviced for some Major problems/virues/malware/etc.  I'm not comfortable using it, as the problems on it included not being able to start Local Services, connect to the internet, no audio services, etc.  The guy says it is booting up and services are working now, but you never know....But i digress...)
    2) be on AC and not battery on my laptop
    3) be hardwired (ethernet) to the internet and not use my wireless connection
    4) turn off Windows 7 Firewall, and disable my PC Tools Spyware Docter with Antivirus.
So, what do you all think? should I wait until later to upgrade to say os 5.1?  Should I even RISK upgrading to iOS5 on a touch 3gen and lose almost $200 cash?  And will Apple give me ANY protection should it ruin my touch?  (I seriously doubt it.)
    Thanks for input.

Before proceeding with the update, it wouldn't hurt to manually back up the iPod in iTunes by right->clicking on it from under the Devices section and choosing Backup.    See this article for more information on what is stored in the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Also make sure that any content you may have synced to the device from iTunes, such as Music, movies, TV Shows, podcasts, etc. are all stored on your computer and in iTunes before updating the iPod's version of iOS.
Otherwise, I would go ahead with the upgrade.  I didn't have any issues with it on my iPhone.

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

  • My iPod touch 3rd gen is malfunctioning

Well first, my iPod touch 3rd gen would start turning off (not all the way, just so that you have to turn on the screen and swipe the lock screen) without me doing anything. It stopped that quickly though. Then the volume sign would start appearing on the screen without me ever touching the volume switch. And then whenever I tried turning it off, (just the screen again) it wouldn't turn off, and I'd just have to wait until it automatically went off. These weren't horribly big problems, but I wanted to get rid of them of course, so I turned my iPod off all the way, with holding the power button down. Now I can't turn it back on at all and I don't know what to do. I'd really appreciate help, I'm not super good with this stuff, 'specially this. thanks! <3

  • Erased all Content and Settings on my iPod Touch 3rd Gen

I've erased all my contents and settings on my ipod touch 3rd gen because I wanted a fresh new start. What happened was I clicked accept to erase all the contents and settings then it shut down and it was erasing everything. Now my problem is that it's stuck on the apple logo, it won't load at all. I've tried doing the restart thing with the home button and on button but it just ends up staying at the logo. My computer doesn't detect my iPod touch nor does my iTunes. I'm in serious trouble. I haven't used my iPod touch for 1 month because of this problem. Please anyone help me

Do you have any security software installed? If yes, make sure iTunes can connect to Apple during the restore process: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125
If this does not help, delete the ipod firmware file (*.ipsw) on your computer, located C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates to make iTunes download a new copy when you connect again in recovery mode. Maybe the file on your computer got damaged. Also make sure to run the latest version of iTunes (9.2.1).
    Good luck.

  • IPod Touch 3rd gen reboots: panic CRC ERR

My 14 year old daughter had an iPod Touch 3rd gen that, with less than a month to go on the warranty, the touchscreen stopped working.  Took it in to the Apple store, where they tried to see if they could resuscitate it by upgrading iOS, reseting to factory defaults, and a couple other magic clicks they tried.  All to no avail.  They checked the liquid damage indicator, found no damage, and then agreed to replace the device.  I walked out with a new (?) device and was happy.
A couple months later I overheard my daughter asking if she could have her mom's Touch.  I asked why she wasn't using her Touch, and she told me that it has rebooted randomly since we got the replacement.  Of course, I was incensed that she didn't say something sooner - like, before the warranty ran out. Knowing that the warrany had expired, I started to research the problem on Apple's forums and the Internet.
Most of the information I found seemed to indicate that certain versions of iOS seemed to incite these kinds of problems. So I went through several exercises to try upgrading, downgrading, restoring the device, DFU mode, etc.  Still, the problems continued.  I upgraded the device over the weeks and months, hoping to find the magic version that would stop this.  I tried removing apps, not installing any apps at all, putting music on slowly instead of syncing large amounts of data, etc.
A day or two ago I installed iOS 5.  It seemed like it was going to work fine, but still periodically it would crash - including during the upgrade process itself, during the restore after the upgrade, when running large apps, when running small apps, and even when not doing anything at all.  In fact the reboots complicated the process such that I could no longer sync without an error, so I had to reinstall the OS again earlier today. I was at dinner tonight and looked over when something caught the corner of my eye - it had gone to the Apple boot screen all by itself, when it was simply sitting there not being used.
I found General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage -> Diagnostic & Usage Data, and see eight files:
    (4) files called 2011-10-15-xxxxxx.panic.plist (I assume xxxxxx is a time of day, since the latest one is from dinnertime)
    (4) files called ResetCounter-2011-10-15-xxx (rest of file name is cut off, xxx is first three digits of above xxxxxx)
I opened them and they all look relatively similar (latest one shown):
    panic.plist:
    Incident Identifier: 5498CD62-1915-4CF6-AA29-68B264862600

    Reset count: 1
    Boot failure count: 0
    Boot faults:
    Boot stage: 0
    Boot app: 0
Now I'm no Apple genius, but CRC ERR to me means a memory problem (cyclic redundancy check, stored checksum of memory contents does not match calculated checksum of same).  The fact that there is a file for each crash since I reinstalled iOS indicates to me that this device is panicking because of a memory problem.
I am generally happy with the Apple i* line - our family has an iPad, an iPad 2, an iPhone 3GS, an iPhone 4, 3 iPod 3rd Gens, and our daughter is on track to get an iPhone 4 for her birthday next month. What concerns me is that they have given me a refurbished device with a problem, and I am powerless to do anything about it?  The flat rate repair cost for the device is $149, but I feel that they gave me a device that wasn't working to begin with.
Any advice on how to deal with Apple in a case like this?  The device is, of course, not covered by warranty, and they want an unspecified amount of money for a single telephone incident, wherein I believe they will simply tell me/confirm that I have a hardware issue. I would like them to look in their records and see what the problem was with the original device they refurbished, because I suspect that they didn't find fault and simply repackaged it.
I am prepared to talk to them - I think I will go to the store, though, because there are scant few appointments available for someone to call me in the next week.  I am even prepared to pay the money, if I thought I had a decent chance of getting some satisfaction in this.  But after reading some other customers' experiences with AppleCare, I tend to believe that the tier-1 support people won't satisfy.
The device was easily $250 when I first bought it for her, and I feel somewhat cheated if they simply repackaged dead hardware.  But it's my word against theirs at this point.
Again, simply looking for advice on how I might bring this to the attention of people who care and aren't just reading from a troubleshooting flowchart.
Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions, including if anyone knows of a resolution that I haven't tried?

  • Sync failed to start w/ iTunes 10.7, iPod Touch 3rd gen

Since upgrading to iTunes 10.7 on Windows 7x64, I have had trouble getting my iPod Touch (3rd gen, 5.1.1) to sync. I am getting the message "sync failed to start". This happens with either WiFi or USB connection to the device. I know the iPod WiFi is working because the Remote app shows my iTunes library, fetches email, etc.
After installing iTunes 10.7, when I connected via USB, Windows tried to search for and install new drivers. After a very long delay, I canceled the search and continued using the existing drivers. I'm not sure if this is related.

I have resolved the problem by 'shutting down' my MacBook ('restarting' the computer was not sufficient to resolve it). While I was at it, I took the battery out briefly before rebooting – don't know if this made the difference, but I do know that Apple Tech Support have instructed me to remove the battery momentarily on previous occasions when resolving other issues with the computer. Anyway, either just shutting down (or shutting down + removing the battery) seems to have resolved the problem, as iTunes is once again recognising my iPod Touch and I'm able to sync again. Phew!

  • Ipod touch 3rd Gen not fully starting up - constantly restarting with the apple logo screen

    Hi,
First of all, I cannot get my ipod touch (3rd Gen) to start up so I cannot get model specifics and version numbers - though it is iOS 5.1.1
I have obviously tried to restart it by holding the power and home button for 10 secs but this has not done anything.
At the moment, the ipod switches on and I see the black screen with the white apple logo - this stays on for about 3 minutes, then I get the little spinning circle (but it isn't spinning) for a couple of minutes, before it powers off and does this again... repeatedly. It only stopped because the battery power ran out.
I have connected it to my computer with the latest version of itunes - it appears in the devices list but just has a spinning 'loading' icon and is grayed out.  As my ipod restarts the cycle again as above, my computer makes the noise as if i just plugged it back in and the above happens again in itunes.
The problem began when I updated apps (through update apps in app store) and it froze - I turned the ipod off to restart it, and now this is happening.
Any help or advice extremely grateful... I can't even access it to get it restored which is a bit of a problem as I have work notes on it. (Obviously I don't know if notes are backed up on ipod backups through itunes?)
    Many, many thanks in advance!

  • I downloaded a recommended update and since then my ipod touch (3rd gen) is frozen and wont turn on (1604 error)

I downloaded a recommended update and since then my ipod touch (3rd gen) is frozen and will not turn on. I try restoring factory settings but the process terminates with a 1604 error. I have researched this problem on the net and think i have tried everything, but still no joy. I have tried removing all apple and itunes software and reinstalling, updating the apple drivers - nothing has worked. I am using itunes 10.3 on my pc, windows xp.
If anyone can help me i would be extremely grateful - I am off on holiday on thursday and would love to have my ipod with me!
    Many thanks in advance.
    Craig.

Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

  • HELP. Ipod Touch 3rd gen won't switch on after updating to OS 4

So here's the thing. I tried to download and install the new OS 4 (i think i had iOS 3.1 before) to my Ipod Touch 3rd gen. Since it was taking a bit too long, i left it hooked up to the laptop for an hour to do some errands. When I got back, the laptop was on standby mode. I checked Itunes and it had this prompt saying update failed or an error occurred (#1602 I think but I don't know what it meant that time). I then checked my Ipod Touch and it was switched off. So we figured maybe the battery got drained while we were gone and tried to plug it via AC charge for 10 minutes. Nothing happened. I tried to hook it up to the laptop, no luck there either. The charger worked fine for an Ipod video we also have. I'm scouring the webs for what to do, Im getting worried. hope someone can help me in this. Thank you.
(and additional question. I'm here in the Philippines right now but this Ipod Touch was my sister's, I think she bought this last year in the US. She just sent it to me this month. So if I take this to the local Apple store, can they do something about my problem? Assuming I cant fix anything by tomorrow. Thanks again folks.)

First I would charge it for an hour and then:
    - Have you tried resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Next would be to place the ipod n recovery mode and then try to restore it via iTunes. For recovery mode see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • IPod Touch (3rd Gen) won't boot unless usb powered

    Info:
iPod Touch (3rd Gen) 32 GB
    Latest Version available (5.1.1)
    Tried resetting settings
Tried hard reset (home button and power button at the same time until apple logo)
    Has a full charge
So basically any time I try to turn the iPod Touch on it will bring up a black screen for a second on the display, fail to boot up to the apple logo, and then shuts the display off.
I have done everything up to restoring it on iTunes as listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
The only problem is in the process of this occuring I have had a hard drive fail so my iPod Touch backups are more than likely lost without further analysis. So what would be the next best step? I assume refreshing it and backing up everything with a backup on my new hard drive under iTunes. Obviously, my computer would know anything about this iPod since I don't have its previous backups, but I should still be able to get the basics (music, videos, photos, etc) back thanks to default iCloud account right?
    Thank you for your time.
    Michael

    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Likely a bad battery

  • Ipod Touch 3rd Gen Freezes, is really slow.

I just bought a new 32GB iPod touch 3rd gen yesterday, and it keeps freezing up. When it loads the "Slide to unlock" screen, the text doesn't "light up" and when I slide the slider over, it doesn't move. after about 20 seconds it then proceeds to the home screen and is frozed there for another 10 seconds. Then it responds normally and lets me use it temporarily. after X amount of time, (1 min - 5 mins) it freezes up when I try to enter text, and does not display the text i'm typing for about 20 -40 seconds and seems completely unresponsive. then after that 20-40 seconds it enters all the text that i typed, or if i pressed the home button during that time it will show the home screen. Any ideas on the problem? I plan on exchanging it today.
I have tried hard resets and 2 factory restores on 2 separate machines with no difference in preformance
