IPod Touch 4 - 256 MB RAM?

The A4 processor in the new iPod Touch 4 only comes with a lousy 256mb RAM. Im still thinking about buying one however.
Do you own a iPod Touch 4 and if so how do you think it works when it comes to processor performance? Does it seem fast? Difference from iPhone 4?

Like you I was a little disappointed with the news that the new touch only have half the RAM of the iphone 4. However, since brought my 32gb version last Thursday I'm very happy with the performance, I didn't notice any slow downs. I think you might save few seconds of loading time on same games when switching apps with the extra RAM.
Thee are videos on youtube showing there are no difference in performance when compared with the new touch and iphone 4 side by side. In fact the new touch is slightly faster in some every day tasks.
Also the new touch have a smaller battery than the iphone 4 so the extra 256mb of memory will reduced the battery time and not have much effect on the overall experience.

    Thank you

    Well there is a difference.
Both the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4G are powered by the Apple A4 Chip. But - the iPhone 4 has 512 MB of RAM and the iPod touch only 256 MB. That is not enough. iOS 7 needs atleast 512 MB.
All iOS 7 supported devices are having 512 MB - 1 GB of RAM.

  • Why won't Ipod touch 1st gen download podcast today feb 29th?

Woke up this morning and tried downloading the slew of podcast on my 1st gen Ipod touch. None will download, all of them stay in the download tab with the error  "there was a problem downloading this podcast" it ask to delete or retry, Ive done both with multiple podcast with the same result. The last podcast I downloaded was Bill Burrs last night and Dana Gould's yesterday. Both worked fine. Today nothing from half a dozen podcast. I have version 3.1.3 (7E18) (sic). I tried restarting and reseting (sliding to turn off and holding both buttons to reset). No go. What could be the issue?

What is the specific app?  Do you have the same problem with all apps, including the ones that are built-in, such as Mail or Safari?
On my 1st gen iPhone, I noticed that some third-party apps (downloaded from the App Store) have that problem.  The 1st gen iPhone and 1st gen iPod touch have lower system RAM for running the OS and apps.  My guess is that some app developers do not account for the device having lower RAM (compared to later and more numerous models), so the apps crash on our oldest devices.
If the app requires a later version of iOS, it won't even install on a device with iOS 3.1.3, so that's not the issue.

  • I'm using Battery Doctor and it says that my iPod touch 5's RAM is 27mb

Hi and please help! I opened ClayJam (3D game) and it crashed. I opened it multiple times and everytime I play it the app crashes. So that got me thinking, I opened Battery Doctor and it says that my iPod touch's RAM is 27mb I re-checked and re-checked it again and I got 25-50mb. Is that why apps with high graphics crashes on my iPod? Please tell me what to do? I really want to play games fluently!

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.

  • How much ram does the iPod touch 4g have

I am a bit confused.  I bought an iPod 4th gen late May 2013 (made about a year ago) and read that it won't be able to be updated to ios 7 because of the ram.  Since when are Apple products only supported for 1 year?!  It's bad enough that I got ripped off buying an iPod touch 2G advertised as a 3G 3 years ago (for which I got several updates).  Now I buy an iPod 4G this May only to find out a few months later that there will be no updates for it!  I am pretty sure what I have now is a 4th gen, but according to Apple's website, there isn't a 16GB 4th gen!  I can't find ram info about this particular model, only for the larger, earlier produced 4g.  My model number is ME179LL/A.  The only info I can find about this model is that it is only about 1 yr old (which is why I 'm a bit po'd about not getting an update).  My ipad is older and can still be updated, so I don't understand why my newer ipod can't!  And don't tell me to buy the newer ipod-I just bought this one and cannot afford to purchase another one (not even a refurbished 5th gen, which is still more expensive than the 4g new)!

It doesn't matter when it was designed, it was built 2012 and should be updated just like any other Apple product.  My ipad is much older and still getting updates!  If you buy a car made in 2012 that was designed in 2010, you still get service for a year.  Your response is not valid.  An Apple product manufactured less than a year ago should still be entitled to updates.  I won't be surprised if there are many people in my position that think this is more than unfair, but disgraceful.  I see more lawsuits in Apple's future if they do not provide an update for a recently manufactured product.  Maybe you can afford to just go out and purchase a new ipod every year.  I cannot and it should be illegal to sell a product that a company does not intend to support.  When I purchased my ipod, Apple was still selling them on their website.  To sell a product you know won't be supported in a few months is unethical!

  • The iPod Touch 4G is supposed to have 256MB of Ram, but mine can barely reach 90.

I am well aware that the iPod Touch 4G is supposed to have 256MB of ram, but when using ram checking applications, I can barely get 90. I have had the iPod since it launched, but have taken good care of it. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Anything I can do?
    Thanks!

The apps tell you how much free RAM you have, not how much total physical RAM the iPod has.

  • Ram in new iPod Touch 5

Please says what volume of the RAM in iPod Touch 5? 1Gb so 512Mb

It may not be known yet since no one has one to teardown. The wiki for the iPod touch

Has a blank for that data.

  • IPod touch RAM issues?

    Hello,
I have an iPod Touch 32GB 4th Generation. In an app  that I have (Kingsoft Battery Doctor) it says there is a total of 248MB of Memory. The iPod slowed down when I installed iOS 5 and got worse with iOS 5.0.1. Here is the memory status right now.
    Memory User
    % and #MB
    Wired Memory
    19%, 48 MB
    Act
    7%, 17MB
    Inact
    5%, 12MB
    System
    65%
    Free
    3%
There are no apps open right now, if you don't include Battery Doctor.
What is slowing down my iPod? Apps take forever to open, The iPod freezes when I try to lock it, and apps frequently freeze and lag.
    Any thoughts or tips?

Well, when you are connected to the internet many of the "services" (like iCloud, location services etc) run on the backround without you noticing it... These services take a large part of your memory. For example, iCloud tries to connect with the server to synchronize everything. Back in iOS 4 you didnt have iCloud...
Now turn iCloud temporarily off, connect to the internet and see if it is any better...
My advice is to make a compromise as i did.. I cant expect my 3GS to perform like a 4S with all the features...
In brief, turn off the services you dont need.
    Hope i helped...

  • App Store keeps crashing on iPod touch 4g

I want to buy a game for my 32GB iPod touch 4g, but I am having a lot of problems with it. First off, the App Store ALWAYS crashes whenever I go to search for a game, so I have to keep restarting it. Second, the Home button is jammed, so I can't do a hard reset (I have to use Assistive Touch). Third, I'm assuming it might have to do with Assistive Touch as well, but I am having RAM problems. I can play some 3D games like Crazy Taxi or GTA Chinatown Wars, but according to an app I have called System Status, my RAM (256 MB) is averaging around 7-8 MB free, and when I try to free more space on the RAM, the app crashes. Sometimes I can get on the iTunes Store, but the App Store crashes 90% of the time while on the iPod. I don't want to sync my iPod to my computer because I'm worried I'll run out of storage due to all the music we have, and I don't feel like manually managing over 2,500 songs. Could I download the app to my MacBook Air from iTunes and then transfer it to my iPod WITHOUT syncing it (my MBA's library is empty, but I set it to not sync automatically)? I hope my questions make sense, and I really want to hear your replies, because I want to download this game very soon. If not, I'm putting it on my Android phone as a last resort (I still prefer iOS by far).

You can only sync with one computer. and y have to sync to get apps from computer to the iPod. You can sync using the manual method.
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
You can copy iTunes purchases from iPod to iTunes by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    Try resetting the iPod:
To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices

  • How can I install iOS 7 on my iPod touch 4th gen?

How can I install iOS 7 on my iPod touch 4th gen?

    You can't
. As Apple said in June, iOS 7 is not compatible with the 4G iPod.
All the iOS devices compatible (iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, and 5G iPod touch) with iOS 7 have at least 512 MB of memory (RAM). The 4G iPod only has 256 MB

  • Ipod touch 6.1.6 to 7.1?

    Hi,
I have an iPod touch (I believe 4th generation) which is on IOS 6.1.6, but more and more apps can't be downloaded because they need IOS 7.1. Am I correct in saying that I can't update my iPod to IOS 7.1?
If that's true, do we know why not? Is it really because the device can't operate this more advance version? Or it's a marketing ploy to have consumers keep buying the newer ones? Just curious on thoughts on this last point.
    Thanks!

No The 4G iPod only has 256 MB of RAM and iOS 7 requires at least 512 MB.
    For app problem try:
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
