Ipod Touch 4--Not recognized in iTunes

As per the title, my Touch 4 is not showing up under "Devices".
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (going so far as to run a registry cleaner to ensure all traces are gone), and rebooting, to no avail. I have an ongoing problem with Bonjour and sharing media (under Sharing in Preferences, iTunes claims my Bonjour service is disabled, when it is indeed running automatically under "Services"), but it doesn't prevent my Nano from being recognized. The Touch also doesn't appear under "My Computer".
I have no doubt this is a local problem on my computer, but I've run out of ideas and patience. Apple's recommended 'solutions' don't work, and there are no further given steps should the problem continue.
Help would be very greatly appreciated so I can start using this Touch to its full potential!

My ipod touch is not recognized on itunes and will not turn on or even give me the battery sign that it is dead. I turned it off and it won't turn back on now. • TS1363 My sons iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes, or windows.  Is this repairable?

My sons iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes, or windows.  I have tried a variety of options, even resetting, but still no luck.

What does the iPod's screen say or do, when you connect it to USB port on the computer?
The article referenced is for "regular" iPods.  An iPod touch is an iOS computer, so this article would be more appropriate for troubleshooting.

Be sure to rule out a faulty USB cable as the cause.  Try another cable, or try the cable you have with another device that has a dock connector.
Also, you should do this test to rule out a problem with the USB port (such as lack of power or USB device conflict).  Shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices, including any hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If the computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).
Then, start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.  If it still does not connect, connect something else to the same USB port to confirm it is working.  Preferably, use something similar, such as a USB flash drive or external drive.
