IPod touch 4 requires MAJOR system overhaul.  Major Disappointment!!!!!!!

Folks, I have a nice iMac that's about 3 years old.  Bought about 2 months before snow leopard, so I've been using 10.4 just fine until recently.  Daughter's iPod bit the dust, and she got a new iPod touch the Fourth.  What a disaster this whole experience has been.  Apple shows absolutely no deference to loyal customers.  This is the 5th iPod our family has purchased.
It will not run without the latest iTunes; and the latest iTunes will not run without OSuX 10.5 or later.  So, I got 10.6.3.  Major hassle having to upgrade OS, just to upgrade iTunes, just to get an iPod to work.  New OS has a little troube identifying the linksys wireless router I've been using forever, so had to do some troubleshooting just to get internet.  Apparently, if your wireless hub isn't an iAirport, Apple can't figure it out without you holding it's hand.
Downloaded latest iTunes, and the iPod was still a brick.  After much ******* around and research, and trying nearly every troubleshooting trick, I finally completely uninstalled iTunes and RELOADED the latest version again.  Voila, this time it worked.
I'm just starting to scratch the surface this disaster of a decision to let my child bring an iPod 4G into the house.    For starters, the Geniuses at apple designed snow leopard to be incompatible with that POS Aperture 1.5.6 I bought a few years ago.  So now, I have 40,000 photos that I can't access via Aperture until I purchase an upgrade.  WHAT!?!??!?!?!?!   I am annoyed and appalled that Apple would do this to me or any other customer.
It is truly disappointing that Apple treats their software like disposable tissues.  As a consumer, I want stuff that's built to last.  I know they put some fluffy bells and whistles in every new release, but I have WAAAAYYYYY better things to do with my time and money than overhaul systems and upgrade every piece of software just so it WORKS.  If they're going to do this crap, they should be honest at the point of purchase and tell you it's not really a purchase.  It's a rental, and after 2-3 years, something will come along that will render your OS obsolete, and when that happens, by design, we render a lot of other stuff obsolete.

Good question.  I didn't read the fine print.  Just assumed that they would sell a product that was more robust, and backward compatible.  All our family's old iPods worked just fine.  It's basically a device for listening to music.  I know Apple wants to 'enhance the user experience' (translation: make it easier for Apple to make gobs of money through iTunes and App store), but the frustrations I had with the iPod touch 4G and all the associated OS, software, & driver issues are beyond maddening.  It's just a stinkin' iPod after all.  After googling a lot on this issue, looking for how people resolved similar issues, I find the Web littered with complaints on iPod touch 4g.  Lot of problems getting iTunes to recognize it.  After getting everything up-to-date, iTunes fails to recognize iPod.  Re-install iTunes. Completely uninstall iTunes, then re-install it.  Next week, same issue.  Re-install iTunes.  Rinse and repeat.  That's been my experience too.

What encryption are you using on the router?
If WEP you have to set the router to use the first key and you have to enter the first key as the password on the iPod. See:

  • New ipod touch requires 10.5 can i upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5?

    Hi there,
like many other mac users I am now in the position of owning the latest ipod but run an OS that is no longer supported namely OS X 10.3.
I have always owned my software and have never infringed any copyright agreements, thus in order to use my new device the ipod touch legally, I require to part with 85 GBP for OS 10.5.
My question is is there any precedent available and/or information on making the jump from OS X 10.3 to OS X 10.5 in one leap.
Dare I say it should be possible, otherwise, surely to give up the sale of tiger 10.4 leaves me with two options; search for a copy on ebay or buy a new machine...
    mmmm not made of money
    cheers in advance

You would probably do better backing up your old system, which you should do anyway, and making a clean breast of it with Leopard by installing via an "Erase and Install" option (screen right after language selection - select Options).
You can then import what you need with the migration assistant.
There are many apps and things that might not work if you performed a simple upgrade.
Of course, if you create a bootable clone of your old system, it really doesn't matter, but there are issues with passwords, permissions, etc that may be problematic if you simply upgrade directly.

  • I am still using an iphone 3G. Every time I try to upgrade to itunes 9.x it completely locks the phone up (did the same to my ipod touch), requiring a 200 mile round trip to the MAC service center. Any ideas?

It would not even allow me to restart, reboot....nothing. Twice with the phone and once with the ipod I had to take it to a service center for a complete reset. Any idea how I can fix this? I'm afraid to upgrade past my old version of itunes!

Just connect the new iPod to your computer and setup the iPod via iTunes (instead of via wifi).

  • Does iPod Touch Require Computer?

We are considering getting our son an iPod Touch for Christmas. As I understand it, it is wireless and can access the Web. I'm assuming he can download music and videos from iTunes directly to the Touch. Am I right? Is it necessary to have his iTunes account on a computer? Or can it all be done on the Touch? His computer isn't working at the moment. Can he pay for his iTunes purchases with an iTunes gift card? He doesn't use credit cards yet.
    Thanks for your help.

You're correct that you can connect to the internet wirelessly and download music to the iPod Touch from the iTunes WiFi Music Store. To the best of my knowledge, however, you need to sync the iPod Touch to a computer to sync the iTunes Music Store account. It is not possible to buy songs using iTunes gift cards from the WiFi Music Store, these can only be used via the regular store in iTunes. Also of note is that the WiFi Music Store sells only music - your son couldn't download videos, audiobooks or podcasts via his iPod Touch, these are only available via iTunes.
Hope this is of some help...

  • Ipod touch 5 operating system

Hi! A fast question: how can I ensure my new ipod 5(I haven't bought it yet) has ios 7.0 and not 7.1 or higher before I buy it? I insist on an ipod with ios 7.0 and if I want, I'll later update it.

OK thanks for the replies! Well I don't insist so much I just want to see ios 7.0 first but since I don't think ios 7.1 will be much different from ios 7.0(in appearance I mean) and it still hasn't been released ok. That's good.

  • I am trying to set up my new ipod touch and the system does not recognize my apple id.  How do I reset and start again.  I'm not sure what to do now.

I can be reached at this email during the day [email protected]

Try to change your Apple ID back to your old email address (http://appleid.apple.com) in order to set up and activate the phone. After the set up please sign out of iCloud and turn off "Find My iPhone" (Settings > iCloud) - do that on all your devices -, then change your Apple ID to your new address again and then add your iCloud account on you devices again.

  • IPod Touch won't sync after restore

iPod Touch, 1st gen., system software 3.1.3
I know this is an old device and there probably aren’t many people still using OS 3.1.3 but this is what I’ve got.  All was working reasonably well before I performed a restore, hoping to remedy some slowness.  However, since reloading both software and contents, I continually get the following message while performing a sync: “The iPod “Laurent Fignon” cannot be synced.  The required file cannot be found.”  While podcasts are updated, photo albums will not load before that message appears and the sync ends.  I’ve tried the restore a couple of times since, thinking that might help but I continue to see the same message when trying to sync.
Rest of the platform is MacBook Pro 4.1, OS 10.6.8, iTunes 10.6.3

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
After trying a couple of less labor intensive suggestions, I downloaded and reinstalled iTunes.  Performed a reboot.  Started iTunes.  Tried to sync the iPod Touch.  Still stopped mid-way through with the same message - "The Pod cannot be synced.  The required file cannot be  found."  As the sync had been quitting at the point where it said it was installing photos, I unchecked the "Sync Photos From" button and tried to sync again.  This time the sync finished successfully.  However, I'd like the photos from the album "iPod Touch" in my iPhoto library to be on the iPod Touch.  It is listed as an album in iPhoto and I can view the pics there but iTunes apparently can't find them.  There is no folder in user/Pictures/ called "iPod Touch".  I don't think I can open the iPhoto Library file.  Anyone have another idea?

  • Why won't Ipod touch 1st gen download podcast today feb 29th?

Woke up this morning and tried downloading the slew of podcast on my 1st gen Ipod touch. None will download, all of them stay in the download tab with the error  "there was a problem downloading this podcast" it ask to delete or retry, Ive done both with multiple podcast with the same result. The last podcast I downloaded was Bill Burrs last night and Dana Gould's yesterday. Both worked fine. Today nothing from half a dozen podcast. I have version 3.1.3 (7E18) (sic). I tried restarting and reseting (sliding to turn off and holding both buttons to reset). No go. What could be the issue?

What is the specific app?  Do you have the same problem with all apps, including the ones that are built-in, such as Mail or Safari?
On my 1st gen iPhone, I noticed that some third-party apps (downloaded from the App Store) have that problem.  The 1st gen iPhone and 1st gen iPod touch have lower system RAM for running the OS and apps.  My guess is that some app developers do not account for the device having lower RAM (compared to later and more numerous models), so the apps crash on our oldest devices.
If the app requires a later version of iOS, it won't even install on a device with iOS 3.1.3, so that's not the issue.
