IPod touch 4g won't upgrade to iOS 5.1

I went to an apple store to see if they would replace my uncles wet iPod and for how much. The lady made us pay 99$ + tax. I also traded my apple headphones that werent made by apple for real ones for free. The lady said the iPod was new. I found out that the iPod was on iOS 4.3.5. So I tried to get it to iOS 5.0.1 so I can get certain stuff on it. It didn't let me. Then I gave up and tried to update it to 5.1 and it won't let me either. It keeps me a 3194 error. I tried restarting my iPod and computer. I tried the umbrella program too. I tried editing the host file but everytime I saved it, it saved as a text document instead of it's regular file. What should I do? I am thinking of taking it back to apple cause I got 70 days warranty. Also the home button makes a clicking noise after I click it. My other iPod doesn't do this. :\

have you tried restoring the ipod touch gen4 then updating the ipod and the next update should be the 5.1 version and that should work ok ps i hope everything goes well

I have 2nd Gen Ipod touch and after upgrading to IOS 4.2.1, all the music were wiped out and I can't seem to upload or sync it anymore. Tried all the fixes out there in the web to no avail. Appreciate the help.

I am having the same problem. I tried using a backup from two months ago, all of my music and apps are lost. However, my iPod DOES remember my settings for the default apps, and my contacts are still there! Tried any fix I could find to no avail, would certainly appreciate any advice!

“SUCCESS!!! I took my iPod to a friend who is a computer programmer/genius. He turned off his wireless, hooked the ethernet cable directly into his computer, and the download went through without a hitch. YAY!”

I got an iPod Touch 1st gen for my youngest son for Christmas as a starter. It has the 2.1.2 ios on it, but after I paid for the upgrade to 3.1.1, I keep getting an error message (8288) saying there was a problem with the network connection. I have called customer service, and they suggested I try on a different computer, and if that didn't work, try connecting to a different network, and then trying the update. None of this has worked. It seems that tech support is clueless with this issue.
I have installed and unistalled iTunes 10.5, 10.3, 10.4, and now I am back with 10.5. I have tried looking up the issue from several search engines but no one seems to have a universal solution and I have tried several.
I really want to have this thing updated for himw hwne he opens it, but I am starting to worry that my purchase was a bust. I know this is the oldest version, but I don't want to buy a newer, more expensive iPod and him still not be mature enough to really take care of it. As I said, this one is a starter.

Now, there seem to be a lot of different ways to solve the 8288 error, none of which are universal. Best of luck getting yours upgraded!

P.S. The post by Sparkhi is a link to his blog going into a long story about how he wanted Apple to pay him for “solving” the issue….the one that apparently has been solved by multiple solutions. I’m not trying to bash, it just bothers me that he put up this whole story and finally, at the very end of his blog post, posts his solution.

My iPod touch 4th gen will not update to iOS 5. Whenever I connect it to my computer, it asks me to update to iOS 5. If I click okay, it backs up and them starts the update, but them iTunes crashes. If I click not to update, and sync it, it's fine. If I try to restore it, it also crashes after backing up. If I tell it not to update right after I connect my iPod, and update through the iPod summary it doesthe same thing. I have tried to update 15-20 since the update came out and it still hasn't worked. What do I do????????

I upgraded both my iPod touch and my iTunes software to the latest. I realised I was not able to sync so I restored the device and wiped it clead using the restore option. Restarted and renamed the device and set it up as a new device in iTunes but I am still not able to sync my music nor movies nor apps. I need help to figure out this issue as I can only install new apps via WiFi, I cannot transfer anything using iTunes as sync button is always grayed out.

Help Needed: iPod Touch 1st Gen not upgrading to iOS 3.1

I have a iPod Touch 1st Generation running iOS 2.2.1. I have iTunes 10.1.1 as well. When I connect my iPod to my computer, and click Check for Updates, it says 2.2.1 is the current version. I thought I could run 3.1 on my first generation. Why is it doing this? Please help as I'm going to b traveling a lot in the car tomorrow and would like to be able to play some games but they need 3.1.

3rd gen iPod touch 32GB won't upgrade to 4.3.3

We have a 3rd gen iPod Touch 32GB that has OS 4.1 on it and when we plug it into the computer (MB Pro running Tiger with iTunes 9.2.1) it syncs the ipod just fine. When we go to the iPod screen though it says there's an update 4.3.3 available but when you click update it says that iTunes 9.2.1 is the current version and doesn't update the iPod. Anyone have any clue on how to fix this or what is going on?

Ipod Touch(4G) won't sync after iOS 5 update

After I updated to iOS 5 my ipod could no longer sync with my iTunes. When plugged in it will appear on the left of iTunes but the sync button is grayed out and unpressible. I have tried restoring a backup on the ipod, resetting to factory settings, reinstalling iTunes, rebooting computer/ipod, and creating a new library. I have never had a problem like this before. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem and read where one person turned off ICloud. I do not have I Cloud activated so I went ahead and turned off WiFi. Now it is syncing.
It used to not get past Step 1 of Syncing and it would say "Fail to Sync" or something like that.

iTunes only allows you to update to the latest iOS which is 5.0.1.
Disabling the computer's security software (firewall and antivirus) during the download and update usually resolves the problem.

There are two arrows below the time a song is plays. One is circular (repeat) and the other has two arrows crossing each other (?). The one going circular needs to be pressed to turned it off.

Wel your "answer" provides not only a bad comparison, but is disingenuous at its heart!
Apple sold a product (8GB iPod Touch) that one could have assumed to be 3rd generation at the time of purchase (because that was what all the other models of iPod Touch were at the time). Then when ios 4.3 came out, we who purchased one of these units found out that the 8GB Touch was really a 2nd generation model, and it would not ever be updated beyond ios 4.2.1 (8C148). Since the version (4.2.1) is BUGGY, it would be in the best interest of Apple to at least provide a bug-fix update release for these units. It is not like we are asking for all the new features of ios 4.3, just fix the BUGS, please, Apple!

awesome121, he does not an an iCloud account. You need iOS 5 or later for iCloud and the poster said he has iOS 4.
