Ipod touch 4th generation - how to view on TV with HDMI adaptor.

Hi I am new to the whole Apple experience. I have an ipod touch, 4th generation (I think only bought Christmas 2011). I bought a Apple HDMI adaptor cord and have plugged these into the TV HDMI port and also the Ipod. Nothing comes up on my television screen.
Online forums/info seems to suggest going to "videos - settings, select TV out etc". This option isn't available on my ipod that I can see.
Can anyone please help on how to show my photos/movies/basically anything on my ipod touch etc from my ipod touch to my TV? I would really really appreciate any help

I have one and yeah, as others have mentioned, it depends what apps you're putting on it. However, I have found myself extremely restricted by the 8GB limit. I can only put about a single home screen's worth of new apps on my iPod without it running out of space, and that was after deleting all music, photos, and videos. So... I have an ipod touch 4th generation that i smashed to screen with a torch, i got the screen replaced however my camera shutter will NOT open at all, i can go into camera roll and everything BUT the shutter wont open and the slide to go from camera to video just blinks a few times. Ive tried everything from turning it off and on(note my off/top button doesn't work) I had problems with the camera before i had the screen replaced but now it doesn't work at all. And will resetting and/or restarting it through iTunes delete ANY of the conent i have on my Ipod?

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.
In that case take it back to the people who replaced the screen. They likely messed something up unless what broke the screen and broke the camera.

No. You can only sync an iPod from media in your iTunes library.
If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar and Control+B to show the Menu bar
To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
To sync to your iPod go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device> and follow the instructions.

You can set up more than one device on your computer, and iTunes will remember the settings for each of them:

But you'll have to use your Apple ID to sync bought media to her device. Disable all other things you don't want to sync like photos, contacts, etc.

I am getting very frustrated with this iPod Touch 4th generation. I have been using my 2nd generation iPod Touch to use iMessage to text people and use as a 'fake iPhone' because carrying around my cell phone and iPod is annoying.
Basically, I have tried multiple times to change the DNS on every network to the google public server (8.8.8.8) and this does not work.
I attempt to sign in to my Apple ID on iMessage and it says "iMessage Activation: Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." Even though it claims I cannot connect to the internet, I can connect and browse on Safari and other Apps, but iMessage (also Facetime) will never connect or let me sign in. I continually receive that error message that I need to check my network connection. I just don't understand why. iMessage will work on my iPad 3rd gen and my iPod Touch 2nd gen, but not my iPod Touch 4th gen.
I am using my college's WiFi network and it is hit and miss in my building, but both my iPod touch 2nd gen and iPad 3rd gen can receive iMessages and everything fine. I am starting to think that the 4th gen ipod touch just has a crappy wifi receiver or something.
PLEASE help me fix this. I don't know what else to do.
