  • I changed the drive letter on my iPod and now iTunes won't recognize it!

Help please! I contacted an Apple associate and they told me to change the drive letter of my iPod in My Computer. I did that and now iTunes won't recognize my iPod at all and I can't change the drive letter back to the original one. What do I do?

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.

If you see your iPod in My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8) but not in iTunes under Devices, try these steps. Start at the top and work your way through the steps until iTunes recognizes your iPod.
If you don't see your iPod in My Computer, follow these steps.

  • My current laptop is about 3 years old. Got a virus and had to wipe it clean. Now my IPod touch 2nd generation won't recognize this computer as the one it was originally assigned to.  what do I need to do to safeguard my tunes on the Ipod touch.

My current laptop is about three years old and got a virus.  Had to wipe it clean.  Now my Ipod Touch-2nd generation is not recognizing it as the primary original computer and says it is registered on another computer.  What can I do to safeguard my library of songs on the Ipodtouch.  Any suggestions?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Ipod Locks Up. Itunes won't Recognize, and Can't Disconnect!

I have a U2 special edition 20 GB Ipod. This is #2 as the same thing happened with #1.
I plug it into my computer to update from itunes. I get the "Do Not Disconnect" message, tho itunes fails to recognize it. It appears to be locked up. I can hear it cycling through. It starts up, I hear a click, it shuts down. Over and over. I can't eject, because itunes doesnt recognize it is even plugged in, and I am afraid to unplug it. I tried to reset. It didn't work. This very same thing happened with my last ipod, i rebooted the computer, and it totally fried the ipod. I was left with the folder/exclamation point icon and had to send it in for a new one.
I am going camping this weekend and really wanted my tunes. Can anybody help?

I give up. I downloaded the new version onto my laptop, it had some sample files already preloaded, so I tried to update my ipod with those. What do you know? It worked GREAT! So, I upgraded the itunes on my home puter to the latest version and tried again. It recognized my pod and immediately began to update. So, I left to do some things, and when I came back, my computer had rebooted and once again my ipod had playlists but not a single song loaded. With the luck on my laptop, however, I thought I would upload an album to that itunes and try it that way. Now the laptop itunes also refuses to recognize my ipod. I wish I could find it entertaining that the sample files preloaded with itunes work but absolutely nothing else will. I also realized I didn't have the latest update (9-23)so I downloaded that too. It locks up my computer. Freaking Marvelous! 5 hours pretrip down the drain, nothing to show for it, and one long-assed drive without tunes. THANKS APPLE! You have done a superb job of convincing me I no longer have any need for your products.

  • IPod Touch disabled, iTunes won't let me log on because iPod has a passcode.  Help?

My daughter's 8 GB Touch says it is disabled and  to connect to iTunes.  When I try to do this, iTunes gives me a message that it cannot connect to the iPod because it is locked with a passcode.  It seems to be stuck in purgatory.  Can anyone help me?
    Tom

If you can't remember the passcode, the device must be restored from the computer it was last synced with.

  • How can I update my ipod if my itunes won't recognize it?

    hi,
I just bought a 1gb ipod nano (online) and I've installed the software my housemate used for ipod nano. when I plug my ipod into my computer, the do not disconnect appears, which I knew would. however, my computer will not recognize the ipod nor will itunes. when I run diagnositics on it using itunes, the connection is "failed" and when I try the ipod updater, it says the program is too old and I should update using itunes.
my itunes will not recognize my ipod. I've tried the Rs, I reinstalled, I tried disk mode...nothing has worked so far. Any suggestions?
    ipod nano   Windows XP

I have the same issue, and I've tried every imaginable solution suggested, including everything on the link above. Ipod is not being recognized in My Computer or in iTunes.
Other USB devices work fine. Tomorrow I'm bringing my iPod to work to see if it connects to my PC there. I'm convinced this is a software issue.
I hesitate to ask for a suggestion, as I've tried virtually everything. Just thought I'd keep this thread alive.

  • I added a new iPod and now iTunes won't recognize my old iPod

My old iPod's battery is just about dead. It is about three years old; I will send it to Apple for a new battery.
In the meantime, I bought a new 5th generation iPod, 60 GB. It's great! Eventually the old iPod will be my work iPid and the new one wil be the home and recreation iPod.
Here's the problem. I researched using two iPods from the same copy of iTunes. In response to my questions in this forum, someone referred me to the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432, "How to use multiple iPods with one computer", which I read, and which supported the idea that you can work with two iPods from one copy of iTunes.
My goal, then, was to follow Method Two as described in the article, and use two iPods from my one computer, without setting up separate user accounts for each one.
So -- I plopped in the CD that came with the new iPod, installed the latest iTunes. It had me register the new iPod by serial number.
In my copy of iTunes, my old iPod was called "Mae Sot's iPod". I set up the new iPod as "Mae Sot's New iPod".
I thought that from now on, when I plugged in my old iPod, iTunes would be able to recognize it, and when I plugged in the new one, iTunes would recognize it.
    Wrong.
My copy of iTunes does great now in working with the new Ipod. But it totally rejects the old one.
When I plus in the old iPod to synch/recharge, I first get the Windows message in the lower right part of the screen with the headline, "USB device is not recognized", telling me that "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it..."
The first time this happened, that message eventually went away, iTunes launched, and I got an error message saying there was no folder for the device.
Now when I plug in the old iPod, I just get the "USB device is not recognized..." message, and iTunes does not launch.
Any idea what is the problem?
My goal is to get iTunes to add my old iPod as a recognized device, so that I can clean the music off it and send it to Apple for a new battery.

  • Can't reopen Itunes once it has been closed without computer restart.  Can't acces Itunes store 3/4 of the time.  Itunes won't recognize Ipod Touch 5  Help?!

Since my Itunes was updated I have had nothing but problems.  When I open Itunes, the majority of the time I can not access the itunes store, though I can occasionally.  I have good internet connection.  I followed Itunes help associated with that and even downloaded the latest version of my graphics card.   Then if I close out of Itunes and go back to reopen it will not reopen at all.  The only way I can reopen it is by restarting my computer.  The other thing is that I have a brand new Ipod touch and Itunes does not recognize it.  Help!!!   I hate Itunes 11.0!!   If I didn't already have 7 Ipods and a song library of 6000, I would walk away from apple right now!!!

Okay for my issue I ended up calling Apple Support and getting a solution!   Yahoo!  It appears to be working properly without having to go back to the old version of Itunes, as was suggested by someone in this forum.   I have Windows 7, and they did suggest to makes sure my Windows 7 was updated, along with my Video Card.   The tech had me uninstall Itunes and Reinstall it, however she stressed to me that if it was not uninstalled in the proper order, Itunes still would not work after the re-install.
The proper order to uninstall Itunes from the add or remove programs, is:
    1st Itunes
    2nd Quicktime
    3rd Apple Software Update
    4th Apple Mobile Device
    5th Bonjour
    6th Apple Aplication Support
Following the uninstall I shut the computer off completely for one minute, then powered it back up, and went to www.itunes.com to reinstall the software.   Seems to be working now, with my Windows 7, without having to revert back to the old version of itunes.

  • Just upgraded macbook to Snow Leopard, and now itunes won't recognize my iphone.  I tried turning all off, and on.  I have the newest version of itunes.  Will I have to reset my iphone (and also ipod touch?), and if so, does it mean I lose anything?

I just upgraded macbook to SnowLeopard 10.6.3 and now itunes won't recognize my iphone.  I tried turning everything off and restarting.  I have the latest version of itunes.  If I have to reset the phone (and ipod touch), what does that mean?  Will I lose anything? How long will it take?  thanks

Start iTunes.  Make sure you really are running the version you think you are.  Sometimes people end up with two copies, different versions.

You say you are running Snow Leopard 10.6.3.  That version will not run the latest iTunes which requires 10.6.8  If you need iTunes 10.7 you have to be running 10.6.8

Hello skdog I possibly think your ipod touch is black because it has not charged. If your dock is broken it might just mean the dock will be broken and so might be the USB port. You should see an Apple shop nearby and hand it over and see what they can do. I hope this information works!
