IPod Touch accelerometer not responding, can't detect in iTunes to Restore

Well here's an odd problem. My 64GB iPod Touch 3rd gen suddenly stopped responding to rotation/movement from the accelerometer.
The Rotation Lock feature is off. I've toggled this on and off many times. There is no icon in the status bar indicating it is on.
Everything is stuck in portrait mode. When trying to play a game that relys on the accelerometer the game will also not respond to movements.
I followed Apple's KB directions and held down the Sleep+Home buttons to hard-reset the iPod, and that seemed to occasionally help, but sometimes the accelerometer still would not respond. I plugged in the iPod, went into iTunes (latest version, 10.1.2) and did a full Restore, erasing and resetting everything to default 4.2.1 firmware. I did not revert to a previous saved backup, so there should be no trace of the previous firmware at all.
After the Restore, I synced my music and apps back to the iPod, and the accelerometer seemed to work fine. After a while, the screen would not rotate again, and apps using the accelerometer would not respond. Again, I checked that Rotation Lock was off.
I plug the iPod back into my MBP, hear the "Ding" charging sound from the iPod, but iTunes does not detect it! However, it is listed in System Profiler under USB as "iPod":
iPod:
Product ID: 0x1299
Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version: 0.01
Serial Number: xxxxx
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Location ID: 0xfa140000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 500
To rule out my user account, I used a Guest account, opened iTunes, and it still doesn't detect the iPod, although it still appears in System Profiler.
Is this some software bug? Is the hardware at fault? I've been out of warranty by about a month now, as I bought it a year ago, so it's kind of frustrating that my iPod would suddenly bug out like this. It's still usable, but it's annoying to be forced to type everything in portrait, and be unable to use app that relys on the accelerometer.

My money's on an intermittent hardware issue. Replacing the logic board would most likely fix it.

my ipod touch is not responding when i plugged it  in even with a different cord and restarting my computer and i am using my moms itunes that she has had for a long time and so i cant uninstall itunes.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod Touch 4G Not Turning On or Connecting to iTunes

I have no idea why, but my iPod Touch will not turn on. When I press the Home button, it will show the low power screen (but only when connected to a USB cable). Holding Home does nothing. Holding Home and whatever the button on the top is results in a brief white flash, then it goes completely black. It won't show up in iTunes, and I've tried everything I can find on Apple's Support pages. I've tried plugging the iPod in both before and after starting up iTunes, I've tried holding the Home button down before plugging it into the USB cable, and I've tried changing where the USB cable is plugged into the computer (despite it being the same port I've used for the past four months, with no real problems).
I'm not sure what, if anything, else I can do, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd tried soft-resetting several times (had a similar thing happen before, and that always worked). Don't know why, but I tried holding the Home button while plugging in the USB cable today (had tried it yesterday, with no luck, but I figured why not try again) and it seems to have worked. Read in another post about it shutting off for about 24 hours because of processor overload, but since I usually don't have more than one app running at a time, even in the background, I didn't think that could be it. Clearly I was wrong. Thanks for the assistance, though.

Re: Error message when trying to install iTunes

  • My iPod touch is not recognised by the computer or iTunes

I have recently whiped my laptop and did a clean install of Windows 7. Now the iPod and the computer both beep when I connectn it to the computer BUT it does not appear as a drive i  the computer, it is not recognised in iTunes and it does not show to be that it is charging.
I have uninstalled iTunes and all the associsted softwar (in the order designated) and reinstalled iTunes, powered down and restarted both deviceses, and stopped and restarted the Apple Mibile Device software. I even tried to "restore" the iPod and did the whipe on it (bad choise) now it displays the cord and plug and is asking to be connected to iTunes. but the laptop and iPod are not talking past the initial beeps.
Not sure where to go from here.
