IPod Touch bricked during iTunes update.  Error #14.

I was updating my iPod Touch via iTunes and it got about half way done when I got error #14. I have followed the troubleshooting steps to the best of my ability however there seems to be something slightly odd about the error that I encountered. When I turn my iPod on now (i.e. when I hold the power/sleep button down for a few seconds WITHOUT pressing the home button as well), I see the Apple logo for a few seconds then it goes straight to the image of a USB cord with an arrow going into the iTunes logo. My computer recognizes my iPod as an iPod and iTunes says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore the iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I click "Okay".
Then I click "restore" since I have just been instructed to do so.
I click "Restore and Update" at the prompt.
The process makes it through the "Extracting Sofware" step, as well as the "Preparing iPod for restore" step at which point I get the Apple logo back on my iPod.
Then a progress bar appears on my iPod which corresponds to the progress bar on my computer (Windows XP, btw). It says "Restoring iPod software..." on my computer.
The progress bar gets to about 25% on my iPod before I get error 14.
At this point the iPod restarts itself. I see the Apple logo for a few seconds and from there straight to the image of the USB cable with the arrow going into the iTunes logo.
This iPod has never been Jailbroken or anything like that. I was attempting to update it because it wasn't connecting to my home's WiFi network, for God's knows what reason.
In conclusion, Apple's update broke $300 mp3 player. It's a 16 GB model and it's out of warranty so I'm put in the position of bringing it to Apple and paying them more money so that they might -possibly- fix the thing that they just broke.
Needless to say this has soured me on the company just a little bit.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate the help.
Thanks,
-Trevor

The exact same thing happened to me!! I was able to get the restore to work on another computer with itunes where I had not downloaded the 3.1.1 upgrade. I am at least back to 2.2.1 with nothing on my itouch. Which is better than what I had. At least it turns on now. From the looks of this board, it would seem 3.1.1 upgrade is not ready for prime time!!

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user. • IPod Touch, iOS 4.0 Update, Error 9, Error 20, Slow Sync, Sync Problems

After wasting a week troubleshooting several problems with two iPod Touch 2Gs, I have come to this conclusion. If everything is working correctly on your iPod Touch under iOS 3.1.x, *DO NOT UPDATE TO VERSION 4.0*!!! Apple will not take any responsibility for the problems it causes (though technical support will assist if your product is under warranty), nor compensate you for the time, money, and gas expended in diagnosing and finding a work around to THEIR problem. And, after reading many blogs, boards, and forums, I am not the only one experiencing problems with their software. Anyway, here are the problems I encountered with resolutions.
I tend to keep my computers very “CLEAN” and “ORGANIZED”. This was my configuration when EVERYTHING worked correctly (with a separate user account for each iPod Touch):
    Acer Aspire One
    Windows XP SP3
    CA Internet Security Suite 2010
    iTunes 9.2.1.4
    iPod Touch 2G iOS 3.1.x
After receiving a notification to update the iPods to iOS 4.0 for a couple of months, I finally decided to “upgrade”. Everything seemed okay…download, extraction, installation, restore…until the final sync stage when it “froze” and eventually encountered an “iPod could not be restored…unknown error occurred (9)” error. This signifies that there is something wrong with the USB connection…it never had a problem before. Anyway, I followed the recommended resolutions which did not work. Finally had to “upgrade” the older iPod Touch to iOS 4.0 on my HP/Vista/Norton laptop, which ran the same version of iTunes. The “upgrade” was successful, so I performed the same routine on the newer iPod Touch, which was also successful. Unfortunately, once you “upgrade” to iOS 4.0, you cannot go back to iOS 3.1.x unless you jailbreak your iPod Touch…which voids the warranty!
The next problem I encountered occurred when I tried to sync either iPod Touch to the Acer netbook. The older iPod had an “iPod cannot be synced…device timed out” error, while the newer iPod took almost 30 minutes to complete…and there was nothing to sync since everything was unchecked. Various testing combinations revealed that it would start okay, backup okay, sync apps and contacts okay, but “freeze” in the final sync stage. Apple technical support could not help since they repeated everything I already performed, and were stupefied! The local Apple Store (which is on the other side of the island from me) couldn’t help either, though the technician there mentioned that he did see a lot of strange issues with netbooks and iPods. After various trial and error combinations, I finally found something that would work. Boot the Acer, log on, DISABLE THE WIRELESS LAN, start iTunes, connect the iPod Touch, then ENABLE THE WIRELESS LAN…sync works. If you disconnect the iPod or exit out of iTunes, you’ll need to DISABLE THE WIRELESS LAN before starting iTunes and connecting the iPod again. Talk about pain in the rear!!!
Well, I thought my troubles were over, but, iOS 4.0 is very creative at causing more. I finally got around to syncing my music, when what would happen…another “freeze”. This time, it would “freeze” when transferring my music from iTunes to the iPod, and eventually error with “iTunes could not copy…unknown error occurred (-20)”. Connecting all USB devices before booting computer, deleting all iPod backups, restarting all iPod/iTunes services, disabling firewall and snoozing AV protection…nothing worked. So, I finally uninstalled the CA Internet Security Suite, and I was then able to sync music from iTunes to the iPod. As a test, I reinstalled the CA Internet Security Suite, and synced the iPod using the process mentioned in the paragraph above. And it works…as long as I’m only syncing and not TRANSFERRING MUSIC FILES!
I have not tried any other combination such as transferring apps or music from the iPod to iTunes, or syncing movies, TV shows, podcasts, etc. At this stage, I’m too busy, too tired, and brain damaged to troubleshoot further problems. But, I did notice one thing each problem had in common. It would “freeze” around the Bonjour process, which seemed to attempt network access. According to Apple technicians, the sync process should not access the network at all.
Hope this helps those of you who are stuck at the various stages mentioned. If you have further information about Bonjour or any other problem I mentioned, please leave a comment. And for Apple, *ADMIT THE PROBLEM WITH iOS 4.0, AND FIX IT*!!!

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • I updated itunes to 10.4, my ipod touch was wiped clean then errored (2003) when attempting to restore, now my ipod is clear. I have tried disabling my antivirus, no luck.

I updated itunes to 10.4, my ipod touch was wiped clean then errored (2003) when attempting to restore. Now my ipod is clear, when I turn it on I get the "Connect to itunes screen", this never goes. I have tried disabling my antivirus, to allow me to restore with no luck.
When I go into itunes I get the message - itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes,
how am I supposed to do this ?
I would rather take the ipod to someone to do the restoration - I still have itunes with all of my downloads on my computer, I dont want to risk losing this as I can re-install onto my ipod when it is sorted.

If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.

    please help   thank you

What was the complete wording of the error message?
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Before you restore the iPod from the backup that Dave had you make yu have to transfer stuff from the iPod to the computer since the backup does not contain the apps themselfes, music, synced phots and some other stuff.  To see what a backup contains see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
    To transfer iTunes purchases:

    - For other stuff you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

  • While updating ipod touch 4 i got an error message now stuck with apple symbol and empty bar. can i restart ipod?

while updating ipod touch 4 i got an error message now stuck with apple symbol and empty bar. can i restart ipod?

    - What was the error message?
    - Try closing iTunes and then disconnect the iPod from the computer. Then reconnect the iPod.  If the iPod shows in iTunes then you can try again.  However, You should try to resolve the error message first.
    - If iTunes does not see the iPod try reetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - I recommend that you come back with the what the error message said and the condition of the iPod and if it is visible in iTunes.

My Ipod and Ipod touch both sync and update latest CD music added to Itunes, however when I connect my Iphone it wont sync my most recent CD addition to iTunes?

I have my iTunes settings to prevent my iPod from synching automatically.
Open iTunes (without the iPod Touch connected) , go to "iTunes"--->"Preferences"--->"Devices", select the box that says "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from synching automatically", select "OK".
I would then close iTunes and then reopen it.  Verify that the settings you just changed are intact.
Log into the iTunes store and update any Apps that you may have purchased.
Connect the iPod Touch via USB with iTunes open.  You will see the icon on the left side under "Devices" as normal, however it will not automatically sync.
Click on the "Device" in iTunes and from there you can manually adjust all the items you want to sync and then select sync when you are ready.
I sync mine this way because I feel it gives me more control over the syncing process.  Also, I always log into the iTunes store first, check for updates to my Apps and then connect the iPod to manually sync.
So, to me, I guess that perhaps is a way to "force" the sync but in a controlled manner.
    I hope that helps.

  • IPod touch duplicates songs after updates

My I-pod touch duplicates some (not all) songs after every IOS update. The only way I've found to correct this is to restore my I-pod and then synch everything again; very annoying and time-consuming. This occurs even after turing off I-Cloud Match. Any ideas/suggestions?

The only solution is the delete the non-playing songs and resync them or redownload them. Sometimes some files on the iPod get corrupted during and update. You may even have to restore the iPod:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
