IPod Touch firmware update question

I have a first generation iPod touch. I finally purchased the 3.1.1 firmware update, and it's downloading now. When I made the purchase, a warning flashed, telling me that when I update the iPod, all of the data on it will be lost. It said that if I wished to keep my music etc., I should make sure it's connected to the computer I usually sync it with.
Now, I suspect that it's just going to update the iPod's firmware, then sync it with my current iTunes library. The thing is, only about half of the music that's on this iPod is on this computer's hard drive. I don't wish to lose the other half.
So, does anyone have any experience with this? If iTunes will back up the data on my iPod, and then restore it once it's done updating, that would be fine, but that doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would happen...
Should I just download copytoy and backup all the songs, then restore them after the update? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I now have a slightly more serious problem, though, which I doubt can be helped, but I figure I may as well ask anyway. Here goes:
I was looking for a program to extract my music off the ipod to make a backup as you suggest. (Back before I had an iPod touch, I used yamipod, but that doesn't have touch / iPhone support.)
One that looked promising was called Sharepod, so I downloaded it, and launched it. It told me that I shouldn't run both iTunes and sharepod simultaneously, so I closed iTunes. Then it told me that it didn't detect any iPod, so I should re-open iTunes with the iPod connected, then restart Sharepod.
When I opened iTunes back up, it told me that it couldn't read the data on the iPod, and that I should do a factory reset to fix the problem. (This of course will erase the data.)
So now I'm pretty much stuck. I can't get iTunes to read my iPod, and as long as it can't, neither can sharepod. The only way I can get iTunes to see the iPod is to wipe the data, which is what I downloaded sharepod to prevent in the first place. In the meantime, the iPod works just fine, I just can't sync/update it until I wipe it, which I would like to avoid. Do you know of any way I could possibly fix this error without losing my data? I've rebooted both the iPod and the computer, and even re-installed iTunes, but no luck.
Any help is much appreciated.

  • Manual download for purchased ipod touch firmware update?

I'm in the Army National Guard, and I deployed a couple of months ago. My internet connection is extremely slow, and typically cuts out for at least a few minutes every hour. I purchased a firmware update for my ipod touch, but the update times out every single time I attempt to download it within iTunes.
Is there any way to get a link to manually download the update? I have a download manager on my computer that can handle the slow link and frequent loss of internet.

  • Ipod touch firmware update 2.0 - 2.1 BLUESCREEN

    Hi,
I have a little problem with my Ipod touch (G1):
Yesterday, I wanted to install a new firmware (V2.1)
After I downloadet it, the firmware was unpacked. When it was finished and the firmware was sent to the ipod, there was a bluescreen.
I tried this some times and there was always the same bluescreen, so I took a photo.
    I read
    The Windows-stuff and then:
    o
    + STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x91190FE7, 0x8F855B28, 0x00000000)
    + usbaapl.sys - Adress 91190FE7 base at 9118c000, Datestamp 48cfd9dd
so I used google to find out something about usbaapl.sys and had many results with bluescreens ('July bug?') but that wasn't my problem, the July bug is, that there is a bluescreen when you plug in the ipod, my problem is that there is a blescreen when you whant to send the firmware (ore any data? I don't know bekause the ipod is in recovery mode) to the ipod.
But I decidet to follow the instructions i found, so I uninstalled mobile device support and installed the one from itunes 7.7, that didnt work (bluescreen)
I Uninstalled Itunes 8 and installed v7.7, that didn't work (bluescreen)
    i Installed Itunes 7.6 (bluescreen)
Finally, I decidet do uninstall the Apple mobile device recovery-drviers and installed Itunes 8 again. But: the drivers were still missing.
Now I don't know how to solve my problem.
Can anybody of you upload the Apple Mobile device (recovery mode) drivers for vista? Or can you give me an instruction how to install them? Or maybe you can solve my whole problem? That would be cool...
    Thank you

If this were just an update consisting of the App Store, I would agree. But how does the logic "this includes something I already bought plus many new features" actually work? When OS X 10.5 was released, it included most of the features of 10.4 (which I bought). Are you saying I should then have received the next version free? The same for any number of apps out there. minor revisions (1.4 to 1.5) are free, but major ones (1.5 to 2.0) are paid upgrades. And there is no way Apple will give it away aside from the fact they are legally obliged not to. If the logic goes "I paid for A I should get B free as it includes A", then since C will include B (which includes A that you paid for), I should get that and D which will include C as well for free.
Would it have been nice for Apple to offer a little something to its dedicated upgraders? Sure. But free? No. I can't get behind that. Maybe a couple free apps (price limited, of course), but not the new software. There is so much more to it than just the store and the stuff you already bought. To name a few: Exchange/MobileME compatibility, bulk email handling, and, to my understanding, improvements in WiFi compatibility.
And to stave off the "Microsoft didn't charge for Zune 2.0" deal, here goes:
Zune is a subscription product. How so you ask? Zune Pass for one. It's a subscription service, thus the Zune is a subscription device. Plus that whole thing where you buy Zune credits or whatever MS is calling them instead of just paying for the media outright. Personally, I would prefer to just pay for what I use and have a few update fees rather than paying $15 a month for a subscription.

  • IPods and firmware update question

    It happened.
I wait, wait, wait and finally buy an 80gb for $350 and a month later 160gb for less comes out!
The only new feature I like is the album cover browse...text listing doesn't mean anything to me for over half my collection - I KNOW my album covers though.
Is there any plans for a firmware update that will bring my 80gb iPod the ability to operate similar to the new releases of today? I'd like the album browse feature on my 80gb...

If it wasn't so difficult and hidden to find out how to contact them directly, I would. Thanks for your answer! I hope it's wrong though...
To your knowledge, have they ever had firmware updates for any product?
Also, to your knowledge, do Apple reps browse these discussion forums? Maybe someone will accuratley respond.

  • Downloading iPod Touch Firmware 2.0.1 via iTunes

    Apple Board,
I currently have iPrimus dial up that times out every 5 hours, however to download the new iPod Touch firmware it takes 30 hours to complete.
Whenever I pause all to resume the next day/next 5 hour session the download restarts. I have spoken to iPrimus about open ending the session however it is against their terms and conditions.
Can iTunes actually resume downloads via a dial up connection? Or, is there a download link similar to iPod Touch firmware 1.x.x?
I currently have iPod Touch firmware 2.0 running.
    Any advice would be helpful.
    Regards

    Apple Board,
I have attempted to download the file again however I found where it downloads to +C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates+ the file downloads as a .DOWNLOAD file however when I click pause all the file is deleted so this is why the file restarts upon clicking resume/resume all.
Is there a way to correct this so the pause/resume actually works?
    Regards

  • IPod Touch 1st gen question

If i buy the IPod Touch Software Update for the 1st gen only.
Also included is the app store?
I'm sorry my english isn't good.

If you purchase the upgrade to iOS 3.1.3, you will then be able to purchase and run third-party apps, yes. Not all apps will run on a 1st-generation iPod touch, though; more and more require either newer versions of iOS, newer hardware, or both.
    Regards.

If you have a 1G (first generation) iPod touch then it can only go to iOS 3.1.3. To identify yours:

If you need a higher iOS, you will have to get a newer model iPod.

Why can't I stop and restart my ipod touch OS update?
I'm working in West Africa, and iTunes says it will take between 8 and 11 hours to download the OS (5.0.1). But I never have that long a stretch of uninterrupted electricity or internet. Every blink off and I have to start again at zero. Bit torrents are already an old technology. What gives? Basically, I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO UPDATE MY IPOD. And probably not my macbook.

Try a manual update as defined here:
