IPod Touch not appearing in devices windows 7 x64

i have itunes on my hp notebook running on windows 7 x64. recently, my notebook crashed and was returned to me with a new drive c: and default factory settings (i.e brand new). i installed itunes and then... my itouch wasn't able to sync! it is not even appearing as a portable camera device (before my notebook crashed, it did). i went to check other forums and tried out the various apple support article (e.g. uninstall (4x already!), update drivers, restore itouch etc.etc.etc.)
anyway, when i run services.msc and check apple mobile device, the service is not started. when i start it, it says "The apple mobile device service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically when they are not in use by other services or programs)". I reckon this is what's stopping my itouch from being recognised and syncing to itunes. Talked to a itunes champion and he couldnt help.
Would deeply appreciate it if someone can help me. Been spending christmas and new year's cracking my brains over this =/

Try taking a photo with your iPod and see if it then appears as a camera device.
(I am really new at this but I had mine appear as a camera because of 1 picture I took. When I deleted it, it does not appear now but I can still get into itunes.)

  • How can I make my iPod touch 2G appear under "devices with removable storage"?

My ipod always appears under "portable devices" under "my computer". I use Windows 7. I want to know why it does not appear under "devices with removable storage". I manually manage its contents. Please give any suggestions that may help. Thanks!

    - Because via My Coputer yu can only access the the photos (DCIM folder) taken by or saved to the iPod. The iPod touch (and iPad and iPhone) do not have a disk mode like other iPods)
    - You need a third-party program like SharePod to access music w/o iTunes

  • Ipod Touch not appearing in Itunes using Windows 7

If your Itouch doesn't appear in Itunes try doing this:
The problem is, for some reason, iTunes won’t install the Apple Mobile Device software or service. Even if you extract out the AMDS installation files, it still fails. The SOLUTION is to take the software and service from Vista for AMDS and manually install it. Then, it will work!
First of all, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed. You can download it from here. These instructions will NOT work for iTunes 8 or 9 anymore. If you’re unsure, just uninstall iTunes then re-install with the latest files. If you want to keep iTunes 9 and don’t want to upgrade to iTunes 9, let me know in the comments and I can get the files to you…I still have them.
Next, you need to manually copy the Mobile Device Support directory from a working Vista machine to your Windows 7 computer
Now, we need to install the correct driver for your iPhone / iTouch. Windows 7 incorrectly identifies the device as a digital camera. To fix this:
    - Plug in your iPhone / iTouch (don’t have iTunes loaded at this time)
    - Go to Device Manager (Click Start, right-click Computer, then click Properties. In the window that appears choose “Device Manager” on the left)
    - Scroll down and find “Apple iPod” or “Apple iPhone” or “Apple iTouch”. It will likely be under the “Portable Devices” category.IMPORTANT NOTE: If your device is already listed under “Universal serial Bus Controllers” and not Portable Devices, you can skip these steps and go to Step 7.
    - Right-click the Apple device and choose “Update Driver Software…”
    - Choose “Browse my computer for driver software” in the window that appears
    - It will ask you for a location; you want to Browse to this folder (location is the same in 32 and 64 bit Windows):
    32-bit and 64-bit: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
    – Click Next
    - It should find the driver for your device; let it install that driver
Once you complete these steps, reboot your computer. Once you reboot everything should work exactly as expected!

  • TS1538 iPod touch not recognized by iTunes, Windows only recognizes it as a camera.

So I've been having trouble with my iPod Touch and iTunes lately. First, the registry settings for the iTunes drivers message kept popping up whenever I opened my iTunes, prompting me to uninstall and reinstall iTunes at least a dozen times. After solving that problem, Windows has been able to recognize my iPod, but only as a camera and not as an iPod, preventing me from updating my music. I've tried different USB cords in different ports, but to no avail. My iPod is recognized on other computers as an iPod. I've followed the Apple resolutions but it still hasn't fixed my problem.

I've removed and reinstalled it many times and each time I do it, I always get the registry errors and the failure to download the driver, but I resolved those. Here are the diagnostic test results:

  • My ipod does not appear in device list

iTunes does not recognize my iPod Touch. It does not appear as a "device". What does appear is "Sync George Lance's iPod". There is no problem syncing but
can't manage the iPod. I have gone through the un-installing and re-installs of all of the Apple S/W to no avail.

Keep in mind, the new iTunes is in a different format.  To revert to a more familiar format:
In the top menu bar in iTunes, select
    1.  View
    2.  Show sidebar
Is the device now on the more familiar left hand pane or still not recognized

Whenever I plug my iPod Touch to the computer, it doesn't show up in iTunes. When I connect it, it reads - "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunction and Windows does not recognize it." The Unknown Device is my iPod that's plugged in. When I pull it out, that Unknown Device is gone.I'm on Windows XP Usb Root Hub. Not on 2.0/ But my iPod and iTunes have been able to work for more than a year. My cellphone works when I connect it to the USB port, but the iPod doesn't read at all.I have tried just about everything. I have reset my iPod, reinstalling iTunes, reinstalled AMDS, etc. My iPod works with a wall adapter, just not when it's connected to the PC.I hope these details help enough.

  • IPod Touch not being recognised in Windows XP or iTunes - HELP!!!!!

    Hi.
I have just bought a 16gb iPod Touch which I am trying to use on Windows XP.
When I connect the iPod to my PC it brings up the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' but does not open up iTunes.
On the Hardware Wizard it trys to search for the driver but cannot locate it, whenever it tries to search it comes back saying "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot locate the necessary software".
I have uninstalled iTunes, Apple Software Updater and Apple Mobile Device Support, and then reinstalled these with iTunes V7.5, but can't get anything to work so that my iPod comes up in iTunes.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!! Thanks.

Hi, sounds like me and CJ2000 are having exactly the same problem!
I've gone through all of the suggested fixes, and spent 78 minutes on the phone to Apple Care last night but still not working.
But, I just tried it with my friends PC and it worked fine, so its definitely a PC issue. What I noticed was that when I plugged it into the other PC it brought up a bubble saying "found new hardware", but then straight away found the USB Driver without needing the "Found New Hardware Wizard". iTunes then opened up automatically.
It seems that my PC seems to have problems locating the USB Driver for the Touch, any suggestions?
    Thanks very much.

  • IPod does not appear under devices in Itunes

These problems started a couple weeks ago: When I connect my iPod classic to my Windows 7 laptop, it doesn't appear under devices in iTunes, but the iPod says its connected. Also, a little blue sheild appeared over the iTunes icon on my desktop. When I click on iTunes, a message comes up telling me to turn off compatability mode before I open iTunes for best results because it was running on an earlier version of iTunes. I've tried switching the compatability around and all of the troubleshooting options possible for iTunes but nothing has changed and my iPod still does not show up in devices. What sould I do?

The blue shield is Windows 7 telling you, to log in as Administrator, it need this higher priviledge to add devices like your iPod to the Machine.
Perhaps, you can go to Microsoft forum, for the how_to override. (must be install and run iTunes as Administrator)
    Have a nice day!
