IPod Touch not recognized in Windows & iTunes won't start unknown error -50

I have been trying to fix a connectivity issue with my iPod touch for almost 6 hours now. I've read all over the iPod Touch forums and none of the solutions worked for me. I've installed and uninstalled iTunes multiple times and nothing seems to work.
Also, earlier this evening iTunes was working but it wouldn't recognize my iPod touch although it would charge. Now that iTunes won't start I'm also having problems with charging my iPod and at no time, was my iPod ever recognized in 'My Computer'.
Someone please help! I'm at my wits end without being able to use and update my iPod. All help/insight/suggestions are appreciated and thanks in advance!

if still no joy, it could be that your Touch is a goner. if it is still under warranty, you should plan a trip to the nearest Apple store.

  • My iPod touch not recognized by Windows XP Serv.3?

What can I do that my iPod touch is recognized by Windows XP Service Pack 3 ?

    Start here:

  • IPod Touch not recognized by Windows Explorer.

My iPod Touch is shown in iTunes' list of devices but is not recognized by Windows Explorer.  Another possibly consequential symptom is that iTunes will not start when the device is connected to the computer.  Any help appreciated.
Windows 7 Pro, IE9, have verified latest version of iTunes.

If your iPod is recognized by iTunes (and by your photo app as a camera), then that's how it should be. To startup iTunes when the iPod is connected, check the appropriate option on the iPod's Summary page in iTunes.

  • Plays & lights work but NOT recognized by Windows/iTunes & won't charge

It's a shuffle 512mb from a few months back and worked perfectly until last week. It continued to play as usual, but is no longer recognized when i plug it into ANY computer (i've tried about a half dozen)! I've followed every suggestion and recommendation from both the Apple Support and the discussion groups relating to my problem though it seems no one has experienced my specific ordeal. I am quite limited as it is not recognized by Windows. I tried searching for it as a "media device" but nothing. All the fucntions and lights work while playing, but there is absolutely no response when connected to a PC. When this charge goes, i'll be without my tunes!
    Any help...
    Thanks

  • Ipod touch not recognized by windows or itunes by one laptop fine on any other laptop

I have a laptop that runs windows 7, my ipod classic and nano all get recognized by computer and itunes.  When I plug in my ipod touch, it isn't recognized by either, but when I plug it into another computer or laptop running windows 7, it is recognized.  I have run all the recommended steps, reinstalled itunes several times, why won't this work?

    Did you try everything here:

Did you remove and reinstall ALL Apple software using:

  • Ipod touch not recognized in windows after reset

I just reset my ipod touch in itunes and now it's not recognizing it. i was updating to 2.2.1 firmware and i never got past the update. it's hung on that screen that has the usb and cd. and windows keeps saying found new hardware and wants a driver. my ipod does not work now. how do i get windows to recognize it so i can finish the update.
I'm on xp 64 bit. and yes i'm using a hacked version of itunes. but it worked with this update before. i actually had the 2.2.1 firmware on it already but i needed to reset the ipod because i have a dead strip i was hoping a reset would fix. now nothing works.

I uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, and reinstalled.  Now, the iPod is being recognized by iTunes.  Hopefully, it will remain recognized the next time I reboot Windows.  I'd hate to have to uninstall/reinstall each time.
But, I'm using a beta operating system, and knew the ramafications when I installed it.  So, whatever happens, happens.  Thank you for responding.   Jd

  • IPod Touch Not Recognized in Windows 8.1 Preview

Hello.  I installed Windows 8.1 Preview clean last week, and am now having problems getting my iPod Touch recognized within iTunes.
Normally, there is a button marked On This iPod, which I click, and then load music in that screen.  That button is not appearing.
Furthermore, usually my iPod is listed somewhere in Windows Explorer.  It is not listed.  I've tried hooking the iPod Touch up to each of my USB ports.  I also have a 4-port USB 3.0 hub and tried them.  The device isn't being recognized.
I understand it's possible there could be conflicts between Windows 8.1 and some software.  Windows 8.1 is, of course, still in the beta stages. But I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem, and if there might be a workaround for it.
    Thank you!   J. Danniel

  • IPod Touch not recognized since upgrading iTunes to version 11.1.4

After upgrading from iTunes version 11.1.3.64 to version 11.1.4.64, my iPod Touch will no longer be recognized in iTunes (but is recognized by my computer - can view drive). I've restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service and the iPod Service with no luck. I've also tried a system restore but the restore point was not early enough (was post iTunes upgrade). How do I revert back to the previous version of iTunes? I have Windows 8. Thanks.

    Hey BobDLT,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. The following article outlines some great troubleshooting steps for this issue. While you may have already attempted some of these steps, I see that there are some that have not yet been attempted. It might be a good idea to run through the entire article:

  • 3rd generation iPod Touch not recognized by Mac & iTunes!

My 3rd generation ipod touch is not recognized on iTunes but is recognized when I plug it into a different computer. I've tried reinstalling iTunes numerous times and have referred to other online tutorials. With no success, my iPod will still not show up on my Macbook, and I've never experienced a problem like this before with either device. My mac and itunes still recognize my iPhone so I don't know why they would recognize one device but no the other. Solutions?
Any feedback will help greatly. Thanks.

It should work fine.  I have a 1st gen shuffle, and it still works...
If you are updating to iTunes 11.x for the first time, iTunes may hide the sidebar initially, which is where the shuffle appears.
If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  In the sidebar, the shuffle should appear under DEVICES.

  • IPod is not recognized by Windows, iTunes or Device Manager

I'm running Windows XP with external hard drive. When hard drive is connected, iPod will not sync and I get message stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices had malfunctioned..."
When disconnect, iPod will sync. However, iTunes is on external drive; therefore musc is not syncing onto iPod. I've attempted the 5 R's as well as searching for iPod in Device Mananger. When iPod is conncected, it is listed in Devce Manage as "Unknown Device." Articles to solve recommend relettering device, bu how do I get it to be recognized by Device Manager?

I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM TO THAT I JUST BOUGHT MY 30GB IPOD VIDEO ABOUT 4 HOURS AGO, SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN REALLY STRUGGLING TO INSTALL IT. A SOON AS I GOT IT, I DID EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID, I WENT TO WWW.APPLE.COM/IPOD/START AND DOWNLOADED THE NEWEST ITUNES VERSION. THEN I PLUGGED IN MY IPOD TO MY COMPUTER, AND ALL THAT HAPPENS IS A LITTLE BUBBLE OPENS UP AND SAYS "FOUND NEW HARDWARE" WHEN I CLICK THAT, IT OPENS UP, AND I CLICK "INSTALL THE SOFTWARE AUTOMATICALLY" WHERE IT SAYS IT, THEN I CLICK NEXT AND WAIT. AFTER, IT SAYS "THE HARDWARE WAS NOT INSTALLED BECAUSE THE WIZARD CANNOT FIND THE NECESARRY SOFTWARE".AFTER I WENT TO WWW.APPLE.COM TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, I'VE LOOKED THROUGH AND READ EVERY ARTICLE THAT CAN PERTAIN TO MY SITUTAION, BUT NONE HAVE HELPED ME I AM DISPLEASED TO SAY, THE LAST ARTICLE I READ WAS THIS ONE:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
BUT EVEN THAT DOES NOT HELP ME BECAUSE WHEN I GET TO STEP 8 WHICH SAYS "Locate the iPod in this list. In some cases one of the entries will have "iPod" in its name. If no such entries are present, the iPod is most likely represented by "USB Mass Storage Device." I LOOK FOR WHERE IT SAYS "IPOD" OR "USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE" UNDER "UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS, AND CANNOT FIND EITHER THING..I HAVE RESTARTED MY COMPUTER A NUMBER OF TIMES, I HAVE EVEN UNISTALLED ITUNES THEN REINSTALLED IT I HAVE STRETCHED EVERY OPTION AND NOTHING HAS WORKED..CAN SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME??..I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FOR 4 HOURS STRAIGHT STOPPING ONLY TO GO TO THE BATHROOM AND GRAB A BITE TO EAT..

  • Ipod touch not recognized by windows 7

    Hello,
I know this is a commonly asked issue on these forums. So I will be as thorough as possible. I am using an ipod touch first gen running iOS 3.0. I am trying to sync it up to my computer which is running windows 7 profession service pack 1. I have followed the steps on the apple help guide and with apple device manager running automatically, I cannot get the device to work. I have reinstalled itunes and the ipod has a charge (for the time being). I was wondering if anyone had any more tips or tricks to get my ipod to be recognized? (My usb ports all work and if I plug it into my parents computer it is recognized there).

The symptoms are a bit different, but since you've got an nVidia chipset and (presumably) at least 4 GB of RAM, I think the first thing to do is make sure you've applied the *Microsoft Host Controller Driver Update* available for you at your drivers and downloads page at HP:
[HP Pavilion Elite e9120f Desktop PC > Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit) > Software & Driver Downloads: Microsoft Host Controller Driver Update|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv -78469-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=4063&product=3970019]
With that update in place, does the Touch behave a bit better when you plug her into the PC?

  • Ipod touch not recognized by Windows 7. screen cycles constantly

I think this is different than the other posts. When i connect my ipod touch to my Win7 PC it 'cycles'. It displays the charging screen for about 0.5 seconds, then displays the 'start' screen for about 0.5 seconds. It then cycles between the 2 screens every 0.5 second or so until I unplug it. Anyone have a fix for this?
    John

  • ITunes won't start - Unknown error 13014 (solved)

I'm posting this up to add to the combined wisdom and help somebody suffering the same difficulty.
I recently bought an iPod Touch so of course had to download iTunes (9.0.3.15) in order just to turn it on for the first time (not happy - I bought it to use as a stand-alone device and I don't think Apple should presume I have a PC or want to connect an iPod to it).
    Computer OS: WinXP SP2
Anyway, everything was fine to start with, iPod started up and I began to explore it, then I used iTunes on the PC (iPod not connected) to have a look around the apps store, downloaded a few little freebies as a taster.
Then came the problems. Next time I tried to run iTunes on the PC, it wouldn't start and an error message window popped up "*Unknown error 13014*".
I googled the problem and found this forum, and the suggested solutions comprised:
    1. Delete the Library Genius database files
    2. Clean the Windows registry
    3. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
    4. Wind back to a previous version of iTunes
I didn't try number 4, but I did everything else to no effect (the database files are in My Documents\My Music\iTunes by the way). I uninstalled, cleaned the registry, rebooted, installed, cleaned the registry, rebooted... still no good.
Then I spotted something which suggested I needed XP SP3 (didn't see why it should make a difference as iTunes had worked originally), and I have always been reluctant to interfere with a working PC, but with trepidation I bit the bullet and updated. To no effect (but at least I haven't broken anything).
So I re-read the forum advice and had an idea. *I renamed the iTunes directory (in My Music) so that it wouldn't be found when iTunes starts, lo and behold iTunes started up fine* and built a new iTunes directory.
The old directory contains the free apps I downloaded, I don't know if one of them is causing the problem but I might try copying the files over and see if anything breaks. I will post again if I find out anything.

PS: I have the corrupt iTunes folder preserved, I can zip it up and email it if the support team would like to dissect it.

  • IPOD shuffle not recognized by Windows/Itunes - download installation SW

I have used a 2G Ipod shuffle successfully on one Dell Windows XP PC for over one year. Have Itunes 7.02 on an identical Dell PC. Plugged shuffle into usb port(s)on second PC - shuffle light turns green momentarily and then off. Shuffle recognized by neither Windows nor Itunes. Went thru the various fixes in apple ipod support to no avail. One suggested fix was to reinstall the IPOD software from the CD that came with the shuffle. Unfortunately, I cannot find the CD and find a link on the apple website to download the corresponding software.
    Suggestions?

I have a solution, derived after some 16 hours of
messing about with the shuffle, reading and
re-reading the forum posts, trying to get my PC to
recognize it, and hold the USB connection without the
old Malfunction bubble ... my advice is free ... take
the shuffle back! I swapped for a 2G Nano, and
within 5 minutes I was off and away! Go Apple GO!
The highly experienced sounding tech at the store
    was also at a loss.
If you read the OP's plaint carefully you'd have noticed what's being talked about is a Shuffle that's over a year old... Thus, unless OP has AppleCare, taking it back is not an option.
