I have an ipod touch version 2.2 and want to upgrade the OS to a later version so that newer apps can be run. any way to do that or which is the latest OS that can be loaded ?

This is a 2nd generation iPod Touch.
You would need to upgrade to iOS 3.1 first. This is lthe last paid upgrade and can be purchased from the iTunes Store: Purchase the iOS 3.1 Software Update directly from the iTunes Store
After upgrading to iOS 3.1 you can then upgrade to iOS 4.2.1 (which is the most current for your device) via iTunes.
Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (see the Update your device using iTunes section).
To be honest, IMO, it is not worth it as most apps now require iOS 6 or later. That isn't to say there aren't apps available fror iOS 4.2.1, but they are few.

Just wait a bit. Turn it off, then back on.
I don't know why, but after the update it doesn't show up right away.
When it finally does, you will find a red icon on the bottom of the screen, on the left side.

IPod Touch 4G upgrade to iOS 5 went badly, now won't sync.

iPod Touch 4G upgrade to iOS 5 went badly - backup corrupted. Reset iPod and installed as new device in iTunes 10.5 but would not sync. After many attempts and another reset, it has now synced apps, contacts, and movies but only immediately after a reboot of the iPod. Music won't sync at all. Sync fails silently with no error message or on subsequent attempts reports that sync failed to start.

Did you try to connect to your computer in recovery mode, set your device aup again "as new" and start all over?

Why is it that only 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touches can upgrade to the iOS5 software? I can't run the apps I want because I have a 2nd generation. I know it's old... but it works great still! - just not compatible! :-P very very frustrating!! I dont want to be forced to buy a new device when this one works fine - Is it completely impossible to upgrade the software???

Ipod touch is upgrading for 28 hours, at least. The bar (i think progress bar) is at about 98-99 percent last 14 hours. Who knows what is going on? or how to handle it?
initially it was suggestion to upgrade iOs to version 8.3.smth.
My ipod is 5th generation

Terminate and try again.
You may have to place the iPod device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. This wiull update and erase the iPod.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

Cannot Sync Ipod touch after upgrading to OS 3.0 (error 13001)

I got the error 13001 when I sync after I upgraded my ipod touch (2nd gen) to OS 3.0.
I tried to reinstall itunes and restore the ipod but the problem still cant be solved.
Some topics here said that it can be solved if you do not sync the song with over the sample rate 44.100 kbps. Some post said it can be solved if you create a new library.
It is okay for a few days, but the problem came back again and this time it cannot be solved by creating a new library.
It is ok when I downgrade my firmware back to 2.2.1.
So, I think it is the problem of the 3.0 firmware(7A341), but I want to use the OS 3.0.I know many people got this problem too.
I hope someone can help me and the people got the same problem.

I have seen one suggestion that disabling virus scanning during sync works. There seem to be quite a few hits on Google searching for ipod touch error 13001.

ITunes Not Recognizing my iPod Touch after Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

Thanks to a posting by Jim in a different Apple Discussions (forum), my problem is now resolved. Read on for the details.
iPods & Finder. Some other postings incorrectly lead me to believe that the iPod would show up in the "Finder". Jim's posting set me straight on this.
iTunes Not Recognizing iPod Touch. Prior to Jim's posting, I had already read the article that Jim referenced (to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service per article "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747").
Prior to Jim's posting, I had also read other articles in various "Apple Discussions" (forums) that suggested this recognition problem could be resolved by uninstalling/re-installing iTunes 8.0.2. Some implied that you could just re-install iTunes 8.0.2 right over the currently installed one without bothering to uninstall it.
Based on those postings, I "gambled" last night and simply downloaded and re-installed iTunes 8.0.2 (without uninstalling it first). I noticed during the installation that the Apple Mobile Device agent was also re-installed. Well, my gamble paid off! After the installation (and a reboot?), iTunes onces again RECOGNIZED my iPod Touch.

I've tried most all of the "solutions" listed' uninstalling itunes, reinstalling, checking Admin Svcs for Ipod and Itunes. Still no luck. Seems there would be a option when plugged in to start Itunes, then we could get to the ipod anyway.

Sync issue between iPod Touch after upgrading

I have an iPod Touch 16GB 1G. I had no problems upgrading to version 2.1 and also have iTunes on 8.0.1.11. It worked beautifully for a while, syncing my music, videos, contact and calendar no problems. Lately, something weird has happened. After finished syncing, the 'window' at the top says "iPod sync is complete. OK to disconnect." On the iPod, there's nothing to show that it's syncing. Yet, on the left under 'Devices' between the Eject button and the battery indicator button, the sync logo is spinning round and round. If I were to click the Eject button, a message pops up saying that iTunes is syncing the iPod. Are you sure you want to eject it? It's really weird. I tried to to some trouble shooting and I suspect it may have something to do with syncing of my Calendar. I sync my calendar with Outlook and there's only 1 calendar i want to sync to. However, when I check on my iPod Touch, there are approximately 7 Calendars How can I delete the Calendars on my iPod?

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

2nd Gen iPod Touch (MB533LL) Upgrade from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3

I have a 2nd Generation iPod Touch (model MB533LL) running iOS 3.1.2.
Is it possible to upgrade it to 3.1.3? There is one app that i want to run which requires 3.1.3.
I found some firmware for 3.1.3 online, but when I try to install it I get an iTunes Restore Error 3194.

Dead iPod Touch after upgrade and multiple freezes

I have kept everything up to date on my MacBook Pro and iPod Touch, but I began having problems on the Touch once updates for new Apps appeared. If I tried to update the Apps wirelessly using the Touch (is there any other way?) the thing froze up from the first try. Getting it back to normal would take several hard restarts or a complete reinstall from iTunes. However, whenever I got it restored and working there was still the problem that most of my Apps were still waiting on updates and the number was increasing. I figured the problem was a bug in one of the updates, so I tried updating just one App at a time -- but every time the Touch would freeze and the cycle of several hard restarts and much time waiting before it became usable was repeated. My next thought was to remove all Apps and try them one-by-one to see if there was a particular problem. In this way, I was able to get wireless updates to work (one-by-one) and most of my Apps back on the iPod. THEN while I was still doing this, the recent upgrade appeared for the Touch and of course I installed it immediately thinking my problems would soon go away. All seemed fine, and after checking it I went on to try to install the last few apps. But upon the installation of my last app (Texas Hold'em) iTunes froze along with the iPod. I had to force quit iTunes and tried to hard restart the ipod. I WAS able to get the iPod to shut down, but since that time, I am unable to fully RESTART the iPod Touch at all. It shows the Apple logo and over a period of a few minutes might beep a couple of times, but appears frozen. If I wait for a long while the battery eventually goes dead. If I connect it to a power source it makes no difference. I have tried restarting 6-7 times, but this time it just won't get past the Apple. Reconnecting it in its dead state to iTunes starts a vain effort that leads to iTunes freezing. Before I return it to Apple for repair, is there ANYTHING else I should try??

I too have been having many issues with the recent upgrade as well as updating my apps. For the upgrade, I rebooted 3 times and on the last try, I waited for over an hour before the apple logo finally gave way to the menu. Since then I attempted to install the app upgrades through the wi-fi on the iPod Touch to no avail. My previous attempts only resulted in the Touch freezing and I had to force a reboot. Today if I "install" I see the loading progress on the app's icon but it keeps repeating the process. One app gave me a message that it cannot be installed directly and that I had to use iTunes. I synced the iPod and I did see the message that it was installing the app; but, the icon on the iPod still indicates that it's attempting to load. Is there a way to update using iTunes? Is there a way to simply update using any method?

HT201412 unresponsive 3rd gen ipod touch after upgrade to ios6

We tried to upgrade our 3rd generation ipod touch to iOS6 yesterday. We connected the ipod to it's power source, it downloaded and seemed to be working then we went to use the ipos and it flashes a black screen with the apple for a few seconds then goes to a whitish screen with the apple and lines all over it, and back and forth. We tried resetting it, we plugged it into a computer but itunes will not detects it. Please help! This ipod worked just fine until we did the iOS6 upgrade

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

IPod Touch exchange/upgrade

I'm hoping anyone can tell me if there is an upgrade option for iPod touches since I have a 1st gen. and I would like to upgrade or exchange mine for a newer one. I bought my iPod touch in best buy and like I said does anyone know if you can upgrade for a newer one threw best buy or someone else? if not im just gonna sell it on ebay and get a new one.

I've tried to let the battery die and charge it to 100% (continuous loading of 6hrs).
Already did a restore as new from Itunes. Do not synchronize any app or configure any emal account. Disable all services (bt wifi, gps, everything) and features (notifications, Siri, iMessage, etc, etc) In stand-by, without even touching the Ipod and any app running, they pass from 100% to 60% in 4 hrs , I repeat without even touching the Ipod. This thing did not append to the previous version.
My last chance is the warranty and never upgrade again , I will stay in the original IOS (if works fine the battery ...)

I'm looking to upgrade the iOS on my iPod Touch from 4 to 5 but I have a whole bunch of music on it that I've got off friends that's not on my computer. Is there any possible way of backing that up before I update or is it just too bad? Better yet, is there a way to update without losing that sort of stuff?

Your friend did not have the right/licence to give you his music. You are stealing. Just update via iTunes. The muic wil be deleted.
