IPod touch randomly shows graphic of USB into iTunes

I have read other questions/replies but I didn't really read the answers that I thought pertained to me.
I have had my 4th gen iPod touch for 14 months now, been using it with no problem.
In the middle of being on it, the screen faded to black and shows the graphics of a USB plugging into the iTunes symbol.
I tried to press the home button and turn it off as well, but when I turned it back on, it went back to the same screen.
I plugged it into my computer, which won't even reckognize it (never happened before)
Not sure what to do next.
I read posts about restore and reset, but I wanted to be sure I knew what was going on.
I can't back anything up however, because like I said, the computer won't "read" it. I even tried another cord, a plug in, and tried another "i" product to make sure it was my particular iPod touch that was having the connection issue.
So here it sits, plugged into my laptop, with nothing happening and that dang graphic staring me in the face...
Any ideas community friends??
Thanks,
T

  • IPod touch just shows picture of USB and iTunes logo with CD, won't turn on

I can't get my iPod touch to turn on to the home page. All it does when I turn it on is I get the apple symbol for a sec and then it shows this picture of a USB cord and iTunes logo with a CD. I've tried pushing the home button and power button down together and that didn't work. And I uninstalled all iTunes stuff and reinstalled it and still nothing. Help me!

I had to disable my wireless to get my IPOD to be recognized by ITUNES. it got stuck in that same screen you describe. another thing you can try is connecting it to another pc that has itunes and then connect it back to the original pc. you will just have to overwrite the library when you connect it back to the original.

Did you buy your iPod Touch from a friend? If so it is very likely that the prior owner had jailbroken the iPod Touch without telling you. Try ensuring that you have the most up-to-date version of iTunes. Next try to plug in your iPod to your computer by way of usb cord. Then open iTunes and check whether your iPod is recognized. If it isn't recognized try navigating to "My Computer" under start and check whether your iPod appears as a removable device. If your iPod Touch is still not present then try putting your iPod Touch in DFU Mode and attempt to restore it.
iOS: Unable to update or restore
Placing your device into recovery mode
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
If all else fails please demand your money back from whoever sold you this iPod Touch.

  • IPod Touch not showing up in Windows or iTunes

Whenever I plug my iPod Touch to the computer, it doesn't show up in iTunes. When I connect it, it reads - "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunction and Windows does not recognize it." The Unknown Device is my iPod that's plugged in. When I pull it out, that Unknown Device is gone.I'm on Windows XP Usb Root Hub. Not on 2.0/ But my iPod and iTunes have been able to work for more than a year. My cellphone works when I connect it to the USB port, but the iPod doesn't read at all.I have tried just about everything. I have reset my iPod, reinstalling iTunes, reinstalled AMDS, etc. My iPod works with a wall adapter, just not when it's connected to the PC.I hope these details help enough.

Have you double checked to make sure the Apple Mobile Device service is installed and running?

  • I have a first generation iphone, just want to use it as ipod touch, no calling. stuck on usb to itunes/emerency call screens. how to proceed to fix....thanks

I think it has been jailbroken and restored previously.  Some forums suggest that this may be the problem.  Is there an easy way to get it to just work like an ipod touch. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Try this way:
Learn how to set up your old iPhone like an iPod touch (without a carrier plan).
If this does not work, jailbreaking made your phone useless.

Sounds like your iPod is in restore mode. Connect it to iTunes. iTunes will pop a little message up saying that your iPod is in restore mode and asking you if you want to restore it, click yes. Your iPod will restore to factory settings and you will be given the chance to restore from a backup. You can do this or set it up as a new iPod.
Here is Apple's page on restoring your iPod.

    Hope that helps.

    Try:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
Do not omit the Additional Information paragraph.
Is the iPod that connects an iPod touch? If not that does not mean anything since iOS devices like iPod touch, iPhone and iPad use different drivers than other iPods.

    Try:

    Also try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ipod Touch Not Showing as a Device

I just received a new Ipod Touch and am just playing around with it a bit to see what it can do.
When I look at Vista Explorer and check the devices attached to my desktop PC, it is not showing the Ipod attached via one of the USB 2 hubs. I know the computer is seeing the Ipod, because as soon as I plug it in, itunes is activated on the desktop. Shouldn't I see the Ipod as a device attached to the PC?
A second question kind of related to the first. Can I download apps, music, etc., to my PC and then transfer them over to the Ipod, without downloading directly to the Ipod? Reason I'm asking this, is that I'm having a bit of a problem connecting to my password-secured home network. The relation to the first question, is if I can't see the Ipod on the PC can I do such a transfer, or is that all done through itunes.
Thanks in advance for any help to a newbie.
    Stew

the ipod touch doesn't work in quite the same way other ipods do, it doesn't allow you to see it (or use it) as an external drive (like you would with a USB stick or something else you've plugged into your PC)
the only time the iPod touch will show up in windows explorer is when there are 'Saved Photos' on it. Photos which have been obtained on the iPod touch, either via screenshots (hold the home button and the power button at the same time to get a screenshot), from safari (when browsing the internet, hold your finger on a picture to bring up an option to save it), or from emails. then you will be able to access the ipod in windows explorer in order to access these photos and move them to your PC.
yes, you can download music etc. to your PC first. this is how it was done before they invented wireless! (and actually the wi-fi itunes store is still fairly basic and limited). just go into the itunes store (there should be a link to it on the left hand side of your itunes screen) and download to your heart's (and bank accounts) content.
then you just sync them to your ipod, like presumably you have already done with the music you've put into itunes from your CDs.
