IPod touch reverts to factory settings after every update.

I bought my iPod touch in March, and have never had any problems. Then about two months ago, it wiped itself after a software update (through iTunes) and reverted back to original factory settings (turn it on, get starter screen telling you to connect iPod, everything is gone, etc). I figured it was a one-time glitch and put everything back on it. However, it has happened three times now, and every time, it happens right after an update. I back it up every time I plug it into my computer, but now, it won't back up, and it won't restore from a backup. It just gives me error messages, or the only available option is system restore (factory reset). I'm getting really frustrated with it, because I have to set up every single thing over and over again.
Should I just try to send it in to replace/fix it, since I still have the one-year warranty? Or is there a way to fix this myself?

This doesn't solve the fact that your iPod goes back to factory settings, but have you tried Backing it up onto iCloud? Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > (takes a few seconds to appear) Backup. You do have to be connected to internet to do this. All you have to do is to remember to do this before you update.

Connect the iPod to the computer and restore via iTunes. If necessary, place the iPod in Recovery Mode to allow the restore.

my ipod touch is not getting recognised after the update in my itunes library. i have updated my library as well. but it shows the connect to itunes sign on my ipod.

If it happened after updating iTunes on the computer see:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT201210 I am receiving error code 1645 when trying to restore my ipod touch 4th to factory settings.

I am running Windows Vista SP2 with iTunes 10.7.0.21. I had my iPod touch (4th) 8g replaced after cracking the screen. My replacement has never worked correctly. I am trying to restore to factory settings but I keep getting this message:
The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1645). I have tried restarting the computer, restarting the ipod, hard reset, erase all contents and settings. My iOS is 6.0.1. Virus software off, firewall off. Any suggestions?

I figured it out. I disconnected my ipod from my computer and powered it off using the slider. I pressed the home button and connected it again (keeping home button pressed until I saw the connect to itunes icon) It restored and updated.

  • Can I restore my 2nd generation ipod touch to its factory settings?

I would like to let another person use my old 2nd generation ipod. If I restore it to its factory settings will I be able to add apps back on it under a different apple id? The ipod is old so many apps are not compatable.

Apps are tied to the acount/ID that purchased them.
Before you restore the iPod make sure that your iTunes library has the version of apps that are presently installed on your iPod. Many apps have been update and the update apps are not compatible with the 2G iPod. I would do that by deleting the apps from your iTunes library and then transfer them to iTunes. See:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You can't add them back under another iD

  • Ipod Touch 4g doesn´t work after firmware update

    Hello togehther,
i had two times the same problem with my iPod. Apple sent me two times a new iPod, but i don´t want to have new iPods every two weeks, i want to have an ipod that works a long time.
    The problem:
-I tried to install Apps, but it didn´t work, iTunes says the apps are "invalid".
-When I update the firmware, at the end, there is the error message "-1" an the iPod hasn´t any firmware anymore. You couldn´t reset the ipod, because the error "-1" comes everytime and you can´t start the ipod anymore, because it has no firmware.
Maybe the problem is because of the apps? Maybe a problem with my iTunes? Or what could it be?
    Thanks for help!

The best place to look for help first is Genuine Apple help directly from Apple.
Read the iPod Touch Users Guide.
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipodtouch
Also start with the basics from Apple.
    1. *Restart iPod touch:* Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPod touch. To turn iPod touch back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
If you can’t turn off iPod touch or if the problem continues, you may need to reset iPod touch. A reset should be done only if turning iPod touch off and on doesn’t resolve the problem.
    2. *Reset iPod touch:* Press and hold both the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

But most basic, have you tried connecting using different cables to be sure there is not a wiring fault?

  • My ipod touch shows 6.83 gb in memory rather than 8 gb. Why is this happening and how can i fix this problem? I have my ipod touch restored to factory settings.

The overall capacity is supposed to be 8 gb, but on itunes it show much less storage space. What is the Reason????

Most of the difference is taken up by the operating system and s thus not availabe to the users.  The remainder is how GB is advertised and how it is uses.  See:

    Hello Jean164,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you are unable to manually put your content back on your iPod Touch.
It seems like you may need to re enable Manually Manage Music now that the device has been updated, and this article should help with that.

  • IPod continuously goes into factory settings

I recently reset my iPod using the center and menu button, because it froze while I tried to turn it off. When I had restarted it, the iPod went back to factory settings. I now will try to put it into my computer, but after the restoration process, it will repeat itself.
Basically after the 15 second message box, it'll repeat the whole thing over again.
    Any help?

Let's try to figure this out. First, did it ever connect successfully before (I'm guessing it did)? What changed since the last time it worked and now? In particular, did this problem start after an upgrade of iTunes? What version of iTunes are you using?
You likely don't need to chuck your iPod, as your problem is (most likely) notyour iPod, but iTunes.

  • Relaunched Finder now Desktop reverted to "factory settings"

    Hi,
This is my first post so please bear with me.
Whilst transferring 14 photos to a memory stick I got the 'Beachball of Doom'. 20 mins later it was still there, I opened 'Force Quit' & Finder was (not responding). I was given option 'Relaunch' rather than 'Force Quit'. Foolishly I did and the other applications stopped working. Now the desktop settings have reverted to default. I still appear to have all my folders & files but can't access Entourage, Power Point, Skype, Help etc. Can anyone help?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums.
First make certain something like this didn't parti;;y hapen, which can of it's own accord...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory...

    ChangeShortName 10.4 only...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16620
    We have more after that...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
