IPod touch shuts down constantly, cant turn back on

I bought a 3g 32gb iPod touch less than 2 weeks ago, and i think i may have a faulty battery. If it is in sleep mode it will quite often turn itself right off or freeze. Once it does, I can't turn it back on. Any button i press is unresponsive, even when i try a reset. If i try to charge/sync to the computer, i get the low battery symbol, even though it is fully charged. I can't get it to turn on most of the time, except occasionally when i hook up the usb cord, i will get lucky and it will turn on.
When connected to a computer, itunes doesn't register that an ipod is attached.
After every random shut down, the time/date is set to dec 31/69 at 5:00. Any ideas?

I personally would return it if it's so new.
If you don't want to return it I would try restoring it to factory specs, but how will that last if it helps? A day, a month, forever? No one knows.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps for unexpected power off issues found in the article below.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • IPod Touch Shuts down and Wifi stops working

I am having a huge pain in the butt issue. I loved the iPod touch for the first year I had it, after which I had a problem, but that was fine. I was in warranty and got a new one. A year later now, I am having another issue. It seems like the things are disposable! Not too impressed with Apple.
My iPod will shut down on its own every couple of days completely on its own, which I have heard is a common problem, but when I turn it back on, the date is set to December 31, 1969 (I believe this is the beginning of the Unix Calendar?), but everything else appears to be working. When I launch any apps that require wireless, they appear to work fine, but nothing loads. i.e. Safari loads the bar part way, email continually loads, but nothing happens, etc. The only way to get it back to normal is to go into iTunes and do a restore from a backup. I would like to go to factory defaults and start from scratch, but I have a tonne of data on there that I would need some way of getting off safely. I should also mention that when the iPod shuts down, the only way to restart it is to plug it in.
I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this problem. I would appreciate any help!
    Thanks,
    A

Thanks for the tip so far Lucas, but i am stuck at the "Connect to iTunes" screen of the recovery process. when i try to restore i was prompted that "The Ipod Software Update server could not be contacted". I am currently at work so i am wondering if i am being blocked from contacting the server because of the firewall and other network security measures. But again thanks at least i have some level of hope.

  • My ipod randomly shut off and wont turn back on

My ipod touch shut off last night while i was charging it and it wont turn back on

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If it has never been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • Ipod Touch 5th generation will not turn back on (won't recharge, and is not recognizable on computer)

I recently bought my new ipod touch 5th gen, and was playing it (browsing on an app) until it randomly shut down without any warning or anything. I thought maybe the battery was low, but I was sure that my battery life was half way and also that it did not give me the "20% low battery" warning. I plugged in my ipod into my recharger just to be sure, but it would not recharge, the screen did not start back up. It stayed pitch black. I tried plugging it into my laptop, still the same thing happened. Furthermore, my laptop did not even recongise it at all. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I even left my ipod plugged in for some time now, and still it appears to have the same pitch black screen.
Please help, thank you. I appreciate it!

Try charging the ipod touch on a wall charger and make sure the outlet is working. And leave it there for 10 minutes.
Or try holding the power and home until apple logo appears.

  • Ipod Touch shutting down automatically

My ipod touch is shutting down automatically if i am not using it for a while.
Its not turning ON even when I press and hold sleep/wake button.
I have to reset the ipod by keep pressing and holding sleep/wake button and home button for 10sec to turn ON

    See Here...
    Frozen or unresponsive iPod touch
Try this First... You will not lose any Data...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If that does not work... try letting the battery fully drain.
Then Charge for an Hour and try the Reset again.

  • My iPod touch shuts down instead of entering sleep mode.

Like a good little user, when iTunes tald me I needed to update the software on my iPod I did so.  Since then whenever it should be entering sleep mode it shuts down entirely.  Not only is this monumentally annoying because I constantly have to reboot the thing, but it causes the battery to run down faster.  I've been looking through the settings trying to see if a default somewhere has been set in an odd fashion, but so far nothing.  I ducked into an apple store on my lunch break and they suggested going for the system restore, but that will be a pain and will delect everything on there.  Can anyone suggest a way to fix this problem?  Have any of you seen this before?

All ther is is the standard fixes:
    - Reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Brand New ipod touch shut down Completely during upgrading os4?

Hubby buy me 64gb ipod touch for my birthday 2weeks ago, i was upgrading it to os4 last night... it was doing fine... then suddenly, the whole thing just shut down like that. There's no way i able on it at all... HOW? All my 11months old son pictures and videos are all in my ipod touch!

Your pictures are on your computer (that's how they got on your touch) so not to worry. If it is truly dead, take it back to wherever your husband bought it and get a new one.

  • IPod Touch shuts down then asks for password on restart.

    Hi
My girlfriend was playing with my iPod Touch 2nd Gen (she was playing 'TheLogosQuiz'). She said that it shut off because of low battery. I held the power button and it turned on (which doesnt sound right, if it shuts down due to low battery I thought that once it shut down, holding the power button gave the low battery icon), but when it loaded, it asked me for a password.
THERE WAS NOT A PASSWORD BEFORE!
I am locked out of my own iPod. I bought it brand new at a trusted retailer in late 2009.
It seems as though it just generated a password itself, and i dont know it.
    What should i do???
    Thanks

If it's asking you for a passcode you do not know (whether or you set it up or now), the only way to bypass it ist to connect the device to your iTunes library and restore it.  If necessary place the iPod in recovery mode using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • My iphone shuts down and wont turn back on. any help please

my iphone shuts down by itself and wont turn back on, what should i do?

If you didn't see anything at all your phone has defective hardware. Connect to the charger again, and while connected hold both buttons. If the phone comes back on, but goes off when you disconnect the charger, you have a bad battery. If it doesn't come on at all you have a hardware failure of the phone. If you see any instructions on the screen, such as an image of a phone connecting to iTunes, follow them; your phone may need to be restored.

  • Ipod Touch shuts down and wont power up

I have a 1st generation 16GB Ipod Touch, after cleaning the screen this morning i notice the display begins to fade and then it powered down. When I try to power it back on nothing happens. I tried a hard reset (holding the sleep/power buttonn down for 30 seconds) but nothing happened. What i do notice though is that when i connect the USB cable to it the apple appears in the middle as if it is powering up but after a few seconds the display fades again then it powers back off. Also its not being recognized in itunes.
ANY HELP PLEASE and THANK YOU!!!
I know its kinda old but it does what i want it to, connect to the internet, play musics and videos

  • IBook will suddenly shut down and not turn back on

My iBook (apporx. 5 yrs. old) will suddenly shut down while I'm working and not back on. Most of the time after it's been turned off for days it won't turn back on, although it's plugged in and the battery is charged 100%. But on the occations it does power up, everything works properly. Could my battery be completly shot?
    iBook   Mac OS 9.0.x

I too have that problem, but since apple replaced my battery for free, it still does that. I once heard that once your iBook reaches a certain temperature, it will just turn off the screen. usually when it happens to me, I just restart my machine the old way (control-apple-power), but it isn't so good either from what I understand! it is a bad way to work, but until apple fixes the bug, we'll just have to live!
(ps) is there any reason you still run os 9 (cause it is officially discontinued as of 2004)? you should be able to purchase mac OS X (10.2 or 10.3) from ebay or your local mac repair shop (we fix macs in palo alto, ca probably sells it still) I just wanted to inform you of this since you obviously had no idea!

  • My iPod touch (4th gen) won't turn back on

I tried unlocking my iPod this afternoon, when it decided to randomly shut off, even though it wasn't on 20% battery, or anything. When I tried plugging it in though, I saw that it wasn't charging. I plugged it in to my computer, went into iTunes to see if anything was happening, and saw that my iPod wasn't being recognized by my computer, unless it entered recovery mode, and even then, it only stayed connected for a couple seconds.
So, in a nutshell, the thing turned off, won't charge, and refuses to go into recovery mode. I also happen to not live too close to an apple store, so I can't get much help from them.
