IPod Touch to Verizon iPhone

I have been using a 2nd gen iPod Touch for a while now but I just ordered a new iPhone from Verizon. I'm pretty sure I know how to sync the iPhone from the iPod (though I wouldn't mind suggestions).
My main question is, can I keep using both devices and keep them identical? Is there a compatibility problem between the 2?

Everything on your ipod should also be on your computer.
You can sync as many ipods/iphones as you like to one computer/account/library.
Each is different and can be set to sync whatever you like.

Your iPhone and iPod can share the same iTunes account. Apps can be freely shared and used by one or both devices. You can't use money in your iTunes account to pay for your phone, but purchased apps can be used by both the iPod and iPhone.

You have to move your songs on your iPod touch to iTunes, then synch your iPhone to that iTunes library. No other way to do this

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

for some reason the past few days ive been trying to back up my iPod touch and my iPhone 4s on itunes and its not discovering it. ive done all the steps on the support page. ive reinstalled itunes, ive shut the computer off and rebooted. rebooted my phone and the ipod and still nothing. ive tried multiple usb ports that are on my laptop. ive went into computer management and its still not seeing anything. i know the cord is fine because its less than a week old and when i plug it in, the devices are charging. someone please help!

Including removing and reinstalling all the Apple software by:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Do you have another cable to try? The charging and data use different conductors/contacts so it may still charge with a bad cable.

Check your System Profiler to see if your computer is recognizing them. You may need to reset the computers SMC.

Try:
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost

Go to www.ecamm.com and d/l PhoneView.
To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - key the keys down until the iPod/iPhone is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place.
With PhoneView you can take the content from the device to the iTunes library.

So is all the music on your iPod touch purchased from the iTunes store? If so, you don't need to "transfer it" to your phone. You can sign your phone into the same AppleID as your iPod and just re-download the music.
