IPod touch won't update/restore

I have a 3rd Gen iPod touch (I have determined it is via this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 and it has the A1318 model number on the back)
I have forgotten the passcode for it, so I have been trying to back it up and restore it. However, each time I try, I recieve the following message:
I have checked my network connection and it is all fine.
Any ideas? If more information is needed, I will try and provide it.
Cheers, DL

When I was trying to download iOS 5 into iTunes, it had this message too. So I clicked around the iTunes store helping it to maintain a connection to apple iTunes.  This should work when downloading software into iTunes.

ipod touch won't finish restore.  It has apple logo with almost completed bar and it stops.  itunes still says restoring ipod software.  Just updated itunes.

I had the same problem and the sad thing is that you wont find any solution, I left my ipod over night with the apple logo screen and the loading bar almost full but it wouldnt move, next day it was still there, I had to unplug it, and I'm pretty sure this cause irreversible damage to your device in the long term since itunes warn you no to disconnect the ipod while the sync is being done and it also messed up my computer, I had to force it to shut down since it got stuck with itunes trying to restore my ipod, you just need to keep conecting your ipod until itunes recognize it as an ipod in recovery mode then it will sync again and everything should work this time, that is what happened to me. Good luck.

  • HT4623 My old school iPod touch won't update.  Does apple mess it's customers over by not allowing updates for older models of the touch?  My last update is Ios5.  My touch says its up to date.  So has my old school touch reached its pinnacle?

Correct. The 3G iPod does not have the hardware to support an iOS version higher than 5.1.1
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • Music Plays on iPod Touch won't update to iTunes 10.5

number of music plays on ipod touch won't update to itunes 10.5

Unfortunately, I do not have a solution to this problem; however, I am experiencing the same thing. However, my iPod Touch is new. It will not play any of the DRM-protected content that I purchased previously; however, it will allow me to purchase content with my Apple account, so it is certainly "authorized," as it were. I guess I will try to reset it, but I doubt it will work.

  • Ipod touch won't update....

I can't get the ipod touch to backup, update, or even reset.  Whats going on, and how do I fix this?

For the iPod not backing up, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location (you can delete after a successful backup) so iTunes has to create an entire new file.  It is located here:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.

  • Ipod touch won't update or restore

My ipod touch will not let me update to the most current software or even restore my ipod to factory settings. It will let me download, but when it is done and ready to install I get a message "There was a problem downloading the ipod software. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." Does anyone know what this means? I never seemed to have a problem until I downloaded that January update a few months ago.
I even tried reinstalling itunes but that did not help. Any help or suggestions are appreciated

Try placing the iPod in Recovery mode and then restoring.

  • 3rd generation ipod touch won't update to new OS

I have an ipod touch, 3rd generation, 64G, model no. A1318 that has given me headaches every time there is an OS update. I usually end up with an ipod that needs to be restored and then upon restore the OS is updated. This time however, nothing is working. I get different error messages (this time it was error 1602 and then upon restore it was 3194). I really want to update my ipod as I use it a lot and this is driving me nuts. This time I can not reload apps that I has previously (like ibooks) because I need the update but it won't update. Can anyone give me any helpful suggestions please. I have read other threads and YES I AM POSITIVE it is 3RD GENERATION. Thanks

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

  • New iPod Touch with January Update Restore Question

    Hi,
Few days ago i bought new iPod Touch with 1.1.3 software and January Update.
When I restore it I'll lose my January Update programs ? And if that happened what can I do to get them back ?
PS. Sorry for my poor english :P
    Cheers

It was mentioned already in this thread. If you look at the package check the seriel number. If it ends with /B then that is the new model and it has the new applications that were provided in the Jaunary update already programmed into the iPod. If you restore you will not lose them.
If it ends with /A then it is an older model that required the January Update in order to get the applications on your iPod. If you restore then you will lose them but you don't need to purchase them again as your iTunes will keep track of the purchase for you.

  • {HELP} iPod Touch won't update from 1.1.5 to 2.1...

Hi everyone, I just received my refurbished iPod Touch 2 days ago and it came with 1.1.5 with the Jan Software Upgrade.
I plugged it into iTunes and successfully synced my stuff in and also purchased the 2.1 update for US$9++. The download of the update was successful.
I applied the update and it would stuck at the "Preparing iPod for restore" thingy.
The iPod Touch screen was completely blank with the backlight still on.(no Apple logo or anything.) Sometimes when iTunes say "preparing ipod for restore" the screen will immediately display the connect to iTunes pic. (no text shown)
After 20-30 minutes, the error code 1604 came up saying that my iPod could not be restored or somethin like that.
When I on my iPod again, I would see the Apple screen then the connect to iTunes pictures. (no text shown)
Connecting to my PC again, the iBoot USB driver thingy will pop up telling me hardware is installed and resdy to use. iTunes will say my iPod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. Restoring to 2.1 never works. I changed user accounts and iTunes restored my iPod successfully to 1.1.5 again. Trying to update to 2.1 will give me same results.
Below is a log I found in my C:\[etc.....]

Please tell me how to update my iPod from 1.1.5 to 2.1??
Placing in DFU didn't work too...
    Tried reinstall or update drivers...
    Tried different USB ports...
    Tried restarting...
Nothin makes it update from 1.1.5 to 2.1 successfully...

That 1604 error is generally related to USB timing issues.
Try the tips in the article deggie linked, under "USB Troubleshooting." http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1286
Try disconnecting all USB devices, other than the keyboard and mouse.

  • IPod touch won't update/sync iCal??

I usb it to my Mac, as usual. Shows connected in iTunes, as usual. Does it's typical syncing. But iCal doesn't update on my iPod. What gives?
    Tried restoring iPod.
    Tried updating iTunes.
    Tried restarting Mac.
Still seeing old calendar entries on my iPod, but my Mac's iCal is fine. It'll even take entries FROM my iPod (manually entered into iPod, they'll sync to iCal ok), but changes to iCal going TO iPod isn't happening.
    Help!

I had this problem, too and was able to fix it. I have an iPod Touch from 2008.
When I wanted to sync my calendars in iTunes, I had old calendars that no longer existed in that list of "iCal Calendars to Sync.
To fix this, I went to iSync in the Applications folder.
    iSync menu > Preferences
At the bottom of this window, you can click a button to "Reset Sync History".
Know that I had nothing to lose on my iPod Touch, I clicked it.
Then I went back to iTunes and the iCal sync area. All of the old calendars no longer existed and the sync worked perfectly.
I hope this helps you, too!
