IPod transfer speed slower via Firewire?

HI, I am using ipod 4th gen with my 17 inch powerbook 1.33, 10.4.4, itunes 6.
Now the itunes take about 30 sec to transfer a song to ipod via Firewire, but when I change to the USB, it works well, about 1 song/sec.
I've tried to reset, restore ipod, reinstall itunes, even I have tried on another firewire connection, disabled spotlight (add ipod into privacy). But it is still the same.
I just wanna figuer it out why, my other firewire device works fine though.

I also recently have the same problem. I have a first gen U2 edition with 20GB. I have tried all the stuff you guys have tried except the complete reset of the unit since it still plays. Can anyone tell me how to do a complete uninstall of iTunes 6.0.2? I have trashed the old 6.0.2 before the latest update but still have the problem. My thought is if I can uninstall the iTunes and reinstall my original 6.0.0 version, maybe the mounting of the iPod will come back. What do you think?

  • IPod Transfer Rate Slow Through FireWire

Hey I have this iPod 40gb (4 generation) Photo, and whenever I hook it up to my PowerMac G3 (B&W) with 350MHz, 512mb ram, with 10.4.9 computer through firewire it is as slow or slower than USB 1.1. It goes at about 500mb in about 10-20 minutes, when it only should take several minutes. Its gone faster at times, but i don't know whats gone wrong. I have USB 1.1 on the comp and its a bit faster when FireWire is slow, but otherwise FireWire is slow. COuld this be a problem with the Firmware?

Ya the Cube only had USB1.1 ports, so you are looking at a long time to transfer. USB1.1 is an absolute max of 12Mbps = 1.5MB/sec = 90MB/min. But that is a number that would rarely be reached, so your 20MB/min is probably not far off the mark for long term sustained transfer speed.
Fortunately future updates where just some songs are changed or small updates are done, won't take as long, but this first one is going to be a rather painful one for you. Be sure to set the cube so it doesn't sleep.

  • Firewire 400 Transfer Speeds Slow

I have three Western Digital My Book Studio drives hooked up via Firewire 400. As I understand it, FW400's theoretical max transfer rate is 50MB/s (400Mb/8~=50MB). However, the transfer between the drives moves along at a paltry 12MB/s.
If I hook up a single drive, or all three (daisy-chained), and transfer directly to my internal drive, the transfer speed sits at 14MB/s (internal drive is a 320GB 7200rpm Seagate drive).
When I hook up one of the My Book Studio drives via USB, the transfer speed hovers around 34.5MB/s.
When I hook up a WD Passport Elite via USB, the transfer speed stays at a constant 30MB/s.
I have updated the firmware on all of the drives, and even installed WD's special drivers. None of this has helped the speed issue.
Please help me fix the slow transfer speeds!

That test isn't likely valid, because OS X should have cached that file in memory (unless you let the file get bigger than it has RAM, in which case it may still have a good portion of it cache). Look at the Activity Monitor and you'll see that the write speed will spike way above the read speed (if it writing drive is faster than the reading one).

  • Ipod won't connect via firewire, only usb

My clickwheel ipod decided to stop connecting via firewire. I reset it, and the restored it, and reinstalled itunes. Nothing worked. I then took out the USB cable from the box (for the first time in almost 3 years) and it works perfectly.
While trying to connect via firewire, it either doesn't show up in itunes or updates about halfway through and then stops and says error -124.
    Any ideas? thanks

  • Local file transfer speed slow on E1200

On a local file transfer (computer to NAS or NAS to computer) my file transfer speed with the E1200 is way too slow. I would expect the Wireless N speed to be at least 54mbps (megabits per second), which would be equivalent to 9 MegaBytes per second.
In practice the speed of transfer appears to be at 8mbps (1 MegaByte per second). Here is a screen shot:
The speed is the same whether I copy from the computer (on a wireless N link) to the NAS, or from the NAS (on a 100Mbit ethernet port on the E1200) to the computer.  The NAS is brand new, auto configured to a RAID-1 setup with two new drives.
Anyone know why this is?  is the encryption (WPA2-PSK/AES) slowing down the transfer? The same problem occurred with copying a folder of photos as with copying this large file.  I don't think I can upgrade the firmware on my device, as I have the first version of the E1200.
    Solved!

There is no option to set the Qos to zero.  I can set it to "auto" in which case the number has no effect.
I could set it to manual but it restricts me to a range as you can see from the graphic.
In case you are wondering, my internet speed is 10Mbps downstream, 5Mbps upstream.  So I am getting the same speed for the internet that I am getting for a local transfer.
The next troubleshooting step is to bypass the wireless and hook my PC to the router.  I will let you know if that makes a difference.

I cloned my hard drive to my iPod for backup, but it will not boot via firewire. I can select it in my Startup Disk control panel, so it's seeing the system. It used to work. Anyone else having problems booting? I'm wondering if this last updater broke the ability to boot via firewire.

  • After security update INTEL Macs network transfer speed slows

MBP C2D and iMac CD transfer speed between them is close to "b" speed after the update. I tried transfer to my G4 that has a G card and it was same speed for both INTEL Macs. Grabbed another G4 laptop with G card and the transfer speeds between those two were at "g" speeds. All 4 machines connected using Apple Express wireless router.
Changed AE router to 5.5 and higher multicast. No affect. Changed channels to 11 and others and back to Automatic, no change in speed.
Cleaned out cache on all INTEL Macs, same "b" speed. Despite all these adjustments the PB G4 wit the "g" cards continued to transfer at "g" speeds, whil the INTEL Macs are stuck at "b" speeds.
I suppose I can do Archive and Install on the MBP and not apply the latest security patch to see if that may be it. But I'm hoping someone has done this already and post their results. If not I'll try it in a bit.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't mount via firewire - any ideas?

After working for a brief spell when I first hooked it up, the progress bar would freeze while I was trying to copy files across to the HD. I unplugged, reset the iPod and tried it in my old clamshell iBook, where it worked fine again.
I tried resetting the PMU on the Macbook, but this only made things worse - the iPod now refuses to mount, despite still working fine on my old iBook. Tried resetting PRAM too but no difference.
Do I have a duff port? Or could it be an issue with 10.4.6 on the Macbook?

I tried a JVC digital handycam while on the phone to AppleCare, which it recognised in iChat, and showed a live picture in iMovie. I don't know how I would check for consistency with this device, but it seemed to be working ok.
I'm connecting via a dock but have also tried connecting direct - all official Apple cables. No difference.
I'm now noticing new behaviour. When I plug the iPod in it mounts very briefly, triggers iTunes, then unmounts. It stays charging from the Macbook's firewire port, but the 'do not disconnect' disappears and I can use it as if it was only connected to AC. This is reproducible, and is the same if I turn off the launch iTunes option.
Once again, it works flawlessly with the old iBook.
I'm almost tempted to go down to the Apple Store in Regent St. and plug my iPod into a Macbook there to rule out software - unless you have any other suggestions?
    Thanks for your continued support.

  • Two 4th gen iPods, only one works via firewire

I've had my 4th gen iPod for a while now. I just got my wife one over craigslist. Hers came with a firewire connection. However, only my Ipod will sync with our iMac 10.4.11, iTunes 7.6. Her ipod only charges. I know that after the 4th gen's firewire was no longer available for syncing. Why would only one of the two ipods work with firewire when they are identical? (both running ipod software 3.1.1)

It looks like the answer to my problems was a bad hard drive. Sent it to the ipod doctor and after a $159 repair, I'm back in business http://nycipoddoctor.com/

  • USB 2.0 transfer speed SLOW?

I am trying to transfer 12.6 gigs to a flash drive via USB 2.0. it says it will take a little more than an hour.
I tried all the ports. Front and back.
    Same issue.
I tried a different flash thumb drive ands I got an estimate of 14 hours. LOL.
But consistently I am getting about an hour.
Isn't that long for 12.6 gigs via USB 2.0?
Apple support says it is not.
I think he is full of it.

  • Airport Extreme file transfer speed slower than expected.

I have an Airport Extreme with a 1 TB drive attached.
I'm trying to copy a bunch of files to it with a Windows Vista computer with a D-Link wireless N dual-band adapter (connected to the 5GHZ channel, which I configured to act solely as wireless N 5 GHZ), but the transfer is only taking place at 1.3 MB/sec.
I'd expect more in the 8-9 MB/sec range for my new router given other benchmarks I've seen. What could be going on?

  • Cannot get Ipod Nano 2nd gen to transfer files via firewire on Mac OS X

    Hi All,
I was delighted to find a hard-to-find firewire to ipod pin cable so that I could connect my 2nd generation 8GB ipod nano to my ancient eMac since it does not have any USB 2.0 ports, it was ideal for speeding up the transfer to near USB 2.0 speeds. Once I put my iPod in the dock and connected it to my firewire port, a message came up on the ipod "transfer of files through firewire is not supported, press center to continue", why is this? Is this a software limitation from Apple? Is there some patch or third party app I could use to overcome this? I'm pretty annoyed at not being able to use the firewire cable which wasn't cheap either :\
    Thanks in advance!

    why is this?
The iPod nanos don't have the hardware components needed to do that. There is no workaround aside from using an USB ExpressCard adapter and a FireWire ExpressCard, and even that is only theoretical.

  • Connection of iPod to iMac - USB or Firewire

I recently got the 80 gb iPod. It came with a cable that connects to the usb port of the computer. My computer is an iMac G4 so I think it's got the older usb ports (not 2.0). I was wondering if I could obtain a wire that hooks into the iMac's firewire port. I am thinking this would allow for quicker iPod updates. Is there such a cable? Will it improve the speed of my iPod updates?

Yes, the Nano and the 5th Generation iPods can both charge via Firewire. Especially helpful for users who still have those older firewire A/C adapters lying around from previous model iPods

  • How to sync IPOD classic in Windows using Firewire - A Workaround

Issue: Itunes does not recognize classic IPOD (5 Gig scroll) via Firewire Port
    Workaround:
1.Set Itunes to copy files to the Itunes media library (Edit/Preferences/Advanced).
    2. Import/rip music into Itunes in MP-3 format (Edit/Preferences/Import Settings). Then close Itunes.
    3. Download and install Winamp and the Winamp IPOD plugin, in that order (these are free).
    4. In the Winamp media library, import music from the Itunes media library (File/Add Media to Library/browse to the Itunes media library).
    5. Plug in IPOD via firewire.
    6. In Winamp, IPOD will be recognized.
    7. Select IPOD, then Sync.

Don't worry about it! Everyone makes "dumb" mistakes at some point, even people who've been around the forums for awhile. You'll get the hang of it.

  • External firewire hard drive reverts to slower transfer speeds

This is the strangest hardware problem I've come across. I'm running a unibody mbp (June 2009) with an external WD 2.0TB Caviar Green drive mounted in a firewire 800 enclosure made by icydock.
Lately, I've noticed that after an unknown amount of uptime, the speed of file transfers to the WD external drive slows down dramatically. I figured this out by watching my time machine transfers take a bit longer after awhile, and I verified this using aja system test and speedutilities.
When I boot my mbp in the morning, file transfers and time machine backups to the external WD transfer at a rate of about 67-75MB/s. This is the speed the drive should always be working at since it's connected via firewire 800. Aja speedtest verifies the speed is as it should be as well.
Then, after a couple hours of using my mbp, or even later in the day, I'll transfer a file to the external WD or run a time machine backup and find that the transfer will only run at a max of 29-35MB/s. This is exactly half the speed the transfer should be going at. Subsequent transfers stay at this slower rate no matter what I do.
However, I've been able to fix this problem by unmounting and remounting the external WD or restarting my mbp. After doing either of these actions, the WD external goes back to contant transfers at 75-80Mbs. So something is happening where the longer the mbp is running, or after some sort of disk activity, the external WD reverts to a slower transfer speed (closer to FW400). I can't isolate whether it's an issue on the mac os side or the hard drive or the hard drive enclosure because I can make the hard drive go back to optimal speed again merely by unmounting and remounting it. This works consistently until a few hours later when the drive begins to handle transfers at half speed again.
I run hourly time machine backups to the drive. The time machine backups can't be the culprit because the drive remains running at optimal speed after the backups (verified with aja system test and speed utilities)
Any possible ideas as to why the drive cuts down to half its optimal transfer rate after a bit of time? I can't figure out the cause of this, and the consistency of the drop leads me to think this is an issue with the power management on the drive since it reverts to full fw800 speed when I umount and remount the drive or restart my computer. Could this be an OSX issue where for some reason the system isn't negotiating the fastest speed?
    Any help appreciated.

    From the SoftRAID manual:
Fire hubs and disk drives. FireWire hubs are notorious for introducing errors and instability onto the bus.
Make sure that all of your consumer electronic devices (iSight, cameras, scanners) are connected to a separate FW bus. These devices are not built to the same standards as storage devices and known for introducing errors onto a FW bus.
Cables. While most cables work fine with a single device, many cables will introduce errors when 2 or more disks are connected to the bus.
