Ipod tries to sync all songs instead of checked ones...

So I'm having a slightly similar problem to others that have written before in that my computer doesn't seem to recognize the ipod. When I plug it in a message is displayed claiming that "there is no disc in drive e"; but this doesn't seem to interfere since songs will still go on the ipod and it will still charge. The main problem I'm having is that Itunes keeps telling me that I have too many songs for the available space, when I know that isn't true since the last time I plugged it into the computer it accepted all the songs. I will un-check songs to try to create more space, but the same message is displayed. It won't allow me to pick the option of only syncing the checked songs and therefore it keeps trying to put un-checked songs onto the ipod.

If it has a click wheel and a 20GB drive, it's a 4th gen.
It is possible that the iPod's hard drive is going bad. Two things you can try...
First, use Windows to reformat the iPod's hard drive. You can do so in a My Computer or Windows Explorer window. Don't use any quick format options; use a full format. It is possible that this procedure will error out or otherwise not complete (for the same reason there is a problem with syncing). But if it does complete, run iTunes and immediately use the Restore button to install and initialize the iPod's software. Then try syncing again.
If you still have problems, or formatting does not complete successfully, the other thing you can try is to open the iPod, disconnect the battery, and check the connections between the hard drive and the logic board. There are two connection points. Disconnect them and inspect them for any corrosion. Reconnect them and then the battery, making sure there is no looseness. Before closing the iPod, try doing a Restore again, followed by syncing.
Here is a helpful guide.

my iPod classic is syncing all songs from library rather than just the ones checked and is not giving me the pull-up screen to make this change

To stop it from syncing automatically when you plug it in, in iTunes, choose Edit > Preferences. Click Devices. Select “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.”
If you click on your device name (from the left side menu) you can check "manually manage music".
You can choose what to sync with that selected .

  • 160 GB iPod Won't Sync All Songs From iTunes

I have a 160 GB iPod and barring the normal song-skipping issues everyone seems to have, I've had no problems out of it. That is until a couple of days ago. I would attempt to listen to a song and it would skip to the next one during the middle of it. It would run sluggishly, skip nearly every song, and at times, freeze. So I decided to exercise the restore option. After that, when I tried to sync it to my library, it only synced 330 (out of 14,000 plus)songs, all of them artists starting with A. I've tried rebooting and restoring the iPod to no avail. I even did a system restore for my entire computer. Nothing works; it insists on giving me only a fraction of my music library. Any suggestions?

    *Hard Drive Diagnostics*
Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • Cannot get iPod 80G to sync ALL songs in playlist...

Ok... nobody else seems to have this particular problem, either that or I just can't find any mention.
I have an 80G iPod classic. My entire library (about 160G) is on a Linux server that I have on my internal LAN. When I create a new playlist for the iPod which is just over 10,000 songs (about 70G in size, well under the available 74.53G available), iTunes only syncs about half the playlist I set up for the iPod. It seems to pick and choose what it wants to sync, but always does an entire album.
It always tells me sync'ing is complete, and gives no error messages. But yes, only about 5000 of the 10,000 songs are on there.
Is there some sort of theoretical limit here that I'm missing, or am I doing something wrong? All of the music is mine, from my personal library, from about a week's worth of ripping CD's.
The library is FAR too big to have local on my macbook pro.
    -g-

For myself I've found that iTunes seems to stall when trying to sync large numbers of files. Here's my approach.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music (or whatever playlist you want to sync). Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • Our I tunes is not allowing us to sync and update our music on any ipod. We can see our songs in music library but as soon as we plug ipod in to sync all songs have an "!" is next to them and it erased our ipods. How do you fix this?

We can see our music in the library of our I~tunes account but we can not click on a song to listen to it. As soon as we do an "!" comes up beside it. And  we tryed to sync our ipods... as soon as we plugged them in they are recognized but they erased our ipods and an "!" was put beside each song. We can sign out and leave itunes and when we get back on our account our songs are there with NO "!".(until we plug an ipod in again) WHAT IS GOING ON!!!???

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

  • IPod failing to sync all songs after restore

My 3rd gen. click wheel (20 gb) basically has one foot in the grave, but I don't want to buy a new one so I'm desperately trying to get this one to work.
I've had to restore this iPod about 5 times so far. I've done that on my Windows XP machine and my Vista machine. Same outcome for both. I get the restore completed and then I want to sync it again and load all my music on it. It starts to sync just fine. I have around 3600 songs and before this total fiasco, the iPod worked just fine with the same music. I get to song 220 or so and it just stops and iTunes freezes.
Just recently when I did this same routine hoping for a better outcome, I got to song 1700 or so and then it froze. The iPod froze too with the "Do not disconnect." notice still on the screen. There is no icon blinking. I did eject it from iTunes safely, but it still has the frozen screen on. I tried to reconnect the iPod, but my computer doesn't recognize it and it doesn't show up in My Computer.
I was going to go through the same routine to restore it again, but my computer won't recognize the iPod, iTunes doesn't recognize it, my iPod is frozen and it won't reset. I even tried to charge it to see if the message will change. It didn't.
I'm all out of ideas. Anyone else have any?

  • Not syncing all songs on playlists. Hmm. What's wrong.

iTunes is not syncing all songs on my playlists with my devices. No changes have been made recently. The PC is a 5 year old Dell, with Itunes on it the whole time. It has the latest itunes version. My devices are a 160 gig Classic, and 2 iPhone 4's. All devices have the latest ios. I synced yesterday like i have hundreds of times before, and each playlist is missing 1 or two songs. Yes, they are all checked in itunes. I've tried both "sync all songs in library", and "sync select playlists". Same Result. Any guesses?

I am having this issue also.  Not a problem when I had the iPhone 4, but now that I have the 4s, I have missing songs from playlists.  The songs are there on my phone - I can play them, but they won't show up on my playlist.  I can manually add them to the playlist, but they won't "stick".  I can play the songs fine on my PC in iTunes fine also.  Seems like it only applies to songs that were actually purchased from iTunes (iCloud available).
I tried removing all music from the phone (de-syncing with iTunes) and then doing a fresh sync - no dice.
I don't want to go through a full new set up of my phone (again) - just for this issue, with no guarantee of success.  How do we escalate this to Apple?  Do they review these posts?

  • Sync All songs and SOME Playlists?

When syncing my ipod, I'd like to sync all songs, but only some playlists (the other ipods that sync on my computer also have playlists that I do not wish to see on my ipod).
There is an option for Sync All songs and All Playlists, or Sync only checked playlists. If I select the Checked Playlists option, then I only sync the songs in the playlists and not the majority of my itunes library. Is there any way for me to Sync All Songs and Only Checked Playlists?
    Thanks.

No, it doesn't work that way. And, even if you do Sync Selected playlists, if any of the songs in the selected playlists are in the non-selected playlists, the non-selected playlist will show up on the iPod (with only the songs from the selected playlists)which is a bit odd.
If you're using a Classic or 3rd gen, you could put all your playlists in one folder in iTunes. Those iPods recognize folders so then you could just go to that folder and ignore the other playlists.

  • IPod touch won't sync all songs in playlist

My son bought a brand-new iPod touch yesterday. He has been trying to compile his playlist and sync it to the new iPod. He has 41 songs on his playlist and only 22 of them will sync. They are all in the iTunes library and the iPod library, but not on the playlist. We tried changing Settings>Music>Group by Album Artist>Off, and that doesn't work. We've also created new playlists and tried syncing those, and that doesn't work either. Today, I noticed that my iPod Touch is doing the very same thing. We have the most recent software and many of the songs were purchased directly through iTunes.
Any thoughts? We've had my son's iPod for 2 days and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I am paying Apple support for help on something that seems to be an inbred error on their part.
    Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem as well and tried so many of these solutions, but no luck. I just got a new laptop with windows 8 and when I hooked my iTouch4 to my computer it only show 36 songs out of 509 of the ones I have on my iTouch. (I was freaking out because I thought windows 8 had something to do with it, but as usual I was being paranoid )
I found a way to put the rest of my music on my USB and hooked it to my laptop and put that music in a separate folder. I had all of them play onto iTunes. Now they all worked on iTunes, but I realized they didn't really sync onto my iTouch. To test it out a bought a new song on iTunes and clicked "sync" onto my iTouch, but nothing happened.
So I started searching for answers, but none of the methods solved my problem. So I started messing around with it and realized that the problem was ACTUALLY A SIMPLE SOLUTION.
So this is what I did...
    1) Start playing one of the songs that won't sync to your iTouch4
(don't know how to sync all songs at once yet)
    2) Now right click at the top bar of iTunes where it shows the song playing
    right click on album picture
    3) Then scroll to "Add to Playlist"
the arrow of "Add to Playlist" will show a list of your own playlists and the name of your iPod
    4) Click on the name of your iPod      Ex) Robert's iPod
    5) Then (you can stop playing song at this point) click on iPod device
This should right away take you to "Summary"
    6) Instead of being on "Summary" look for "On This iPod" - Click it
    7) Now "On This iPod" show a list of all the music that is currently on your iTouch
(including the song you just added from iTunes by following these steps)
    8) Make sure all the songs you want in the list have been marked with a "check mark"
    9) Then click "sync"
Check iTouch to see if song downloaded...
*If not then - still on "On This iPod" - click on "Autofill"
    (Wait for it to load)
    Now click "sync"
You should now have the songs on your iTouch as well!
It's a simple solution, but I haven't seen anyone advicing it and I wish they had so I didn't have to go through all this trouble
    Hopefully this helps!!!

  • Hello, I have a problem with the iPod, is that the iPod does not sync all the songs that are on my Itunes. I have 373 songs on the iPod and iTunes 512 in ... What do I do?

Hello,i have a problem with the Ipod,is that the Ipod doesn't sync all the songs in my Itunes. I have 373 songs in my Ipod and 512 sons in my Itunes. What do i do?

    Hello,
I take it you haven't unticked any of the songs listed on your iTunes Library? Also have you tried selecting all your songs which you wish to add to your iPod, and dragging them over your Devices "iPod Nano"; and seeing if that copies all songs on to your iPod?
Another idea is just check that your iPod has enough space for the rest of your songs to be added to your device.
    Hope this helps.

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
