IPod troubles

Hello,
I'm having problems with my Ipod...it's not being recognized by my PC and is making some clicking noising from the HD I suppose.
I tried to restore/reformat it but it's not recognized by iTunes or the iPod Updater...I also tried to put it into disk mode but thats not working either...all I get is the exclamation folder
any tips?
thanks for the help

Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Solution to ipod troubles!!!

Green/amber light flashing? Error 1418 message? Ipod not recognized by pc/mac or itunes? Device error? Etc...
After wasting several frustrating days, reading and trying out the many options posted in this and numerous other threads (Thanks to all of those that took the time to offer your suggestions and comments - as Apple certainly is doing nothing to help) I have the answer -- Buy another brand and one that is cheaper.
What is Apple doing to fix the problem - nothing! I was shocked to see that some posts are from August. Why is Apple not helping to fix the problem they created? Greed! Has anyone who has paid for support got a working shuffle or just the option of paying even more money to send it in for repair?
How many of us have spent countless hours trying to fix our shuffles? I bought my shuffle because it could connect to any computer (Mac/PC) via USB for charging and playing. This is something that the second generation does not do. If you bring yours to work or school, do you want to be carrying the dock as well?
How many of our friends are laughing at us because they bought cheap MP3 players that still work?
I am tired and frustrated because this is not the first time a software upgrade screwed things up for me with my shuffle on my PC.
My time is valuable to me as is my money. I am investing in another cheap MP3 player (If it gives me at least a year of service it will be a better value than what I got with my shuffle)- problem solved!

I think I may have found a solution to the Shuffle/iTunes 7 issue that doesn't involve buying a new mp3 player or banging it on the desk lol!! I was having all the same troubles described by everyone else. I couls still see my Shuffle in Windows Explorer so I decided to try and load some music on just like I was loading files onto a regular Stick Drive. I clicked and dragged a coule of album files over to the drive which it accepted. Of course when I tried to play them nothing happened. The cool part is that when I turned on iTunes it recognised my Shuffle. I loaded some music on and it worked fine for the first time since dowloading iTunes 7. I then went back into Windows Explorer and deleated the album files I had dragged across and bingo I have my full 496MB capacity and a working Shuffle. This may be a coincidence or something else may have happened unbeknownst to me (an Apple update??) but give it a go if your still having trouble.

  • Putting music on ipod -- trouble.

    heres the situation;
I put music on my ipod before and was all happy and stuff. but now since i got more songs, i want to put those on to my ipod too. the trouble is, when i try to click and drag files to my ipod, it won't transfer (i can't transfer, when my mouse goes over my connected ipod, it turns into a 'can't do' sign..you know, circle with diagonal lign through it.)
the names of songs on ipod are light grey, and there's a lock key symbol on the right of where it displays how much memory is left on ipod
is this an update problem or something? i need some help please

There are many different problems putting music on the iPod, this is one of them. Check there is enough memory on the iPod to put the music on and check the music is the right file for the iPod, otherwise I recommend you check out the Apple support pages or contact Apple.

  • Itunes and Ipod trouble

I tried to DL a version of Ifill from Griffin products and have had trouble ever since with Itunes and in essence my Ipod. When I plug in my Ipod now, Itunes doesn't automatically open and refresh my Ipod. Manage manually is checked and when I uncheck it and Apply, Itunes tells me to Erase and Sync with the Itunes library, so I tried that and Itunes froze up and now I am missing music on my Ipod and the majority of my ALbum artwork is with the wrong songs.

    Almost the same problem.
After installing Ifill, I can´t automatically sync my iPOD.
Already uninstalled Ifill, cleaned registry, reinstalled Itunes, everything !
DON´T USE IFILL. A LOT OF BUGS.
    Anyone got answers ?
    Thank you

  • Ipod troubles: jolt, freezing..

    Hi guys!
I'm writing here because I'm having some troubles with my 3d gen nano:
    1-
first of all..is 2/3 days that sometimes when I'm listening to music I feel a small jolt in my ears.. is it possible? o.O could it be because my ipod sock isn't 100% cotton? I don't think is speakers' fault because they are new and they have never given me such problems..however today I started using the ipod speakers.. let's hope.. :\
    2-
almost everytime I connect the ipod to the pc the ipod freezes, and I have to reset the ipod. this is really so annoying...is there a way to fix it?
    3-
sometimes the ipod reset itself automatically at the end of a song. now: my previous mp3 player didn't have such problems..I'm seriously thinking at ipod linux unless apple doesn't fix something via software..(converting the damaged mp3 would be really annoying because I don't know how to recognise them: itunes plays all the mp3s correctly.. also my previous mp3 player..)
    4-
a little one..and I've noticed other people wrote about this: there is a problem in ipod's coverflow with album from different artist with the same name!!!! apple, please, fix it!!!
if smeone has suggestions for me..it would be really goood

See if you can find a Mac computer and do the following
    6. Open the iTunes and click “Restore”
It is caused by the bad sectors on the hard drive of iPod, and it must be formatted to solve but not Restore. Don't ask me why, the PC's formatting would not help in most cases

  • Swiching ipod, trouble with library

Okay I started using an Ipod waaaay back in the day and when I was first using the software everything showed up in the itunes library i went from an ipod mini to a nano, and all i had to do was click and drag the music from the library to the nana icon.
So a couple of years ago my old ipod went bust and my parents gave me a new one for Christmas its a 2nd gen ipod nano its started having trouble where it would only turn on some of the time so my mom gave me her old ipod, when she got a new one, the one she gave me is a ipod nano 3rd gen
so here is my problem, when i was using my 2nd gen nano none of the music i have that is not purchased from itunes shows up in the main library (the one that shows even if you dont have an ipod pluged in) a lot of these songs are from CDs but i dont have a lot of those CDs anymore, the whole reason i use an ipod is because im really hard on my CDs and they always end up so scratched they wont play anymore. Anywho so i'm not sure how to get those songs from my 2nd gen nano to my 3 gen nano because in the past when i went to burn the music to a disk it would only want to burn the music from the main library.
any help or suggestions would be great appreciated.

Not sure it is the case but you might want to check if you have unecessary top and left properties that are on the timeline but unused. If so, delete these lines.

  • Ipod trouble HELP!!!

I have had my Ipod nano 2nd gen for a long time and it has never given me trouble. Recently it would not connect to my computer but after I changed cords it was fine. Then it suddenly would not turn on at all. nothing. When I plug it in and try and turn it on it makes a weird ticking or clicking sound. It doesn't show up in my itunes and a box pops up saying itunes can't recognize ipod and my computer doesn't recognize it either. Does anyone know what to do to try and fix it? Or should I just go to a store and have them try and fix it?

  • Windows Vista & Ipod Trouble

    Hi eveyone.
My dad bought a new computer and we redownloaded Itunes onto it. I know obviously that there isn't going to be anything in the library.
I have no idea how to get the music from my Ipod into the Itunes on my computer. I know there's got to be a way to do it but I have no clue how.
It wants me to erase and sync but then it'd completely clean out my Ipod. I don't want to have to re upload every single cd I have.
    What do I do?
    Please help!

When you get that "Erase and Sync" message, be sure to click on the "Cancel" option, and NOT "Erase and Sync", which will remove all of your iPod's songs.
After that, click on your iPod's name in the Source List, and under the "Summary" tab, tick the "Manually manage" option for your iPod. Click the “Apply” button in the bottom-right corner to save your changes.
    Now onto the transferring.
There are a few different ways to copy your iPod's songs to your computer, but probably the most straightforward method is to download a third-party program that can copy the songs from your iPod to your computer.
I would suggest that you try YamiPod. It's free, and I've heard it recommended a lot.
    I hope that helps you!

  • Ipod troubles - don't know what else to try

I've had my ipod since 2004, and its always worked well. I used it a day ago, and set it on my desk. Today, when I plugged it into my computer to charge it came up with a message that I suddenly needed to restore my ipod.
Now my ipod makes a clicking noise, what I assume is the hard drive spinning then suddenly stopping, over and over. When I plug it in my computer my system locks up. I've tried to rename the letter of my ipod's drive, but going into the networking section just results in it saying that the (G)drive is unreadable.
So far the only thing I can do is reset it into disc mode. I've tried to format it by clicking on it in My Computer (the 2/10 times it shows up) but nothing happens.
The other two times I got it to let me get to the ipod updater to try to let me restore, the restore won't go through and it says it is unable to mount.
And then shortly after all this I'm getting a WMI error.
I feel like I have so many problems all at once! Anyone have any suggestions or is it just worth it to buy another one at this point..

    Hey there.
I bought the 2nd generation iPod a while ago. It broke. I've gotten five iPods from Apple because they have alll malfunctioned.
The latest one (4th gen) has been giving in as of late. I decided to screw attempting to get another one from Apple because they didn't want to give me one and wanted it serviced so I went out and bought one.
Buy a new one. Make sure you get a service plan!

  • Ipod troubles after 1.3 upgrade

I connected my 60gb ipod to itunes. I installed the firmware 1.3 update on my ipod. After that, my ipod went into disk mode on its own, and a pop-up said I needed to restore my ipod with itunes. I restored it.
Now the tracks (encoded at m4a 256 bitrate) only play one minute or so, and move on to the next track. My ipod is not in shuffle mode, but this is very annoying. I have had my ipod for two years (as of next week), so I don't know if the battery indicator could be wrong, and it's really lower than it shows?
I that other people having the same problem with songs skipping. Is this a bug of the 1.3 update?

I had the same problem with both 1.2.3 and 1.3 upgrades. Both times I was able to successfully downgrade to 1.2.1, and that fixed the problem. (I don't have the details on the downgrade process, but there have been several messages here about that recently.)

  • IPod Trouble NEED HELP!

Ok so my IPod is 4th Generation a 16 GB ... I was wondering if I can get it fixed or replaced with a one year warranty but since they don't make the 4G anymore can I get a 5g with the back iSight camera since my 4g had a back camera? I reall want to know.

Apple doesn't repair it.  If there is no sign of abuse, they replace it with an identical refurbished unit.  If the warranty has expired, the fixed-price for non-warranty replacements can be found here.

  • Major Ipod Trouble, Please Help

Lately I've been going through a lot of frustration with my ipod. I just recently bought an imac intel core duo and through data DVDs and ipod access, managed to get all of my music, which had previously been scattered between two PCs and an ipod, in one place. In order to get it onto my ipod I had to restore the ipod and then synch it with my new computer's itunes, which was successful. Everything was going smoothly until recently it started freezing inexplicably. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason other than that it seems to freeze a few seconds into a song and that it's just about always happened in my car when it's plugged into my FM modulator. Every time it's happened, the music disappears when I restart it, and doesn't reappear until I've restarted it several more times. I thought perhaps that restoring the ipod didn't fully update the software and created problems after it had been synched. But just recently when I plugged it into my computer, itunes said that it couldn't be read and that I should restore it to it's factory settings, which I had just recently done, and then when I ran ipod updater on it without itunes, it said that my ipod was up to date. I would just restore it or buy a new one but I just did restore it and this ipod is only a few months old and was sent to me as a replacement when my old ipod broke. Any insight would be appreciated
