Ipod turns on, starts playing but no volume

Howdy,
My ipod 30gb turns on and starts to "play," but I get no volume. i turn it off and start it again and it plays fine. sometimes i have to turn it off and back on a couple times. should i reset it? if i reset it, do i have to re-sync the thing?
thanks,
du

Since last posting I've reverted to iPod software 1.2.1. to no avail. My iPod still "appears" to work (display lights up, song and artwork are shown, counter is rolling...) and the controls are all responsive, but I have no sound. The headphones are good.
My sense that the headphone jack itself is OK is from that fact that when resetting the iPod, I hear an audible "POP" at the moment it resets.
My next discovery occurred accidentally while I was attempting yet another reset. For a moment, while applying pressure to the center button, but before applying pressure to the menu button, I got sound. Ah ha! I then locked the iPod while it was playing and simply pinched the iPod across the bottom half of the click-wheel, and playback was audible. It came in and out, and there was some static and popping, but I got audible playback.
So it seems I'm dealing with a short in the internal wiring and I'm researching the cost of repair.
I hope its not going to be prohibitively expensive since I'm already in over $300 for an iPod that was top of the line in August of last year. I took excellent care of the thing, as it was my pride and joy. It was never dropped, left in a hot car, never got wet, it had a slip cover for protection from dust.
In my opinion, a nice, expensive piece of electronic equipment, treated well, should not cease to function 4 months after the warranty period ends.
I'm speaking as a big Apple corp. fan here too. I've used Macs for years and have always sworn by their products. This, however is a big disappointment.

My ipod nano will turn on and play but the viewing screen will not come on and I cannot access the information to select different playing options. It glows white background light then goes dark for the entire time I am using it. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem.  Someone here told me to make sure my earbuds were in securely.  Push until they click in place.  It solved the problem.  The music still plays even though the screen goes to sleep.  Hope this helps.

  • IPod Shuffle has started playing audio books and podcasts too fast.

iPod Shuffle has started playing audio books and podcasts too fast.  What can be done?

Some other iPods (that are not shuffles) have an onboard setting to change the playback speed for some types of iTunes media, such as audiobooks.  But a shuffle has no screen, to change such settings.
First, do this to reset the shuffle, if you have not already
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
If that does not help, you may want to do a Restore on the shuffle.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the shuffle, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.  The shuffle will be like it was when new, so this problem should be fixed.

This method is exactly how I'm trying to get my music on my new iPod touch, it starts downloading but then stop and says unable to download at this time. What the **** is going on ?

Try going to Settings>Store and sign out and sign back in.
It also could be due to an Apple server problem. and yu will just have to wait and try again.

  • I have 60gb ipod classic.  Music plays, but screen is blank or white.

I have 60gb ipod classic.  Music plays, but screen is blank or white.  Resetting has not worked.  Lines show when reset, but no Apple logo.  Is display shot?

    Hello Paul,
I would be concerned too if my display on my iPod classic was not working.  I recommend going through the steps in this tutorial.  If it is a software issue, these steps should resolve the issue:

  • IPod app randomly starts playing

Anyone have this happen? The iPod app starts up randomly, even if the phone is in sleep mode. Any solutions?
I have tried several hard reboots, and the problem persists.

This has happened to me several times also and I never can figure out why. It happened again today and here is what I was doing...in case someone from Apple reads this.
I was listening to music. I hit pause and exited the Ipod. I then put the Iphone into the sleep mode or whatever it is called with the button on top.
I left my headphones in because I was in a really noisy area and I was expecting a call.
I was wearing Sony earbuds with no microphone or anything else special...just earbuds.
Well after about 30 minutes...boom...the ipod just suddenly comes on and starts playing music while it is in my pocket.....
    Apple please help....

  • Ipod Video says "now playing" but timer stays at 0:00 and no music plays

I just purchased a 30 GB Ipod from a friend, it was restored when I got it, I out all my music on it from i-tunes, and when I went to select a song, it would say "now playing" but no sound was coming out, and the timer stays at 0:00. So even tho it says now playing, it really isn't. Any Idea what the problem is???

I am having the same problem with my 60BG iPod. It will stop between songs, indicating that it is still playing (and not paused), the timer stays at 0:00, but the playback does not continue. I have also had the problem recently where a song will stop mid-way through, again not paused, and will not continue. I reset the iPod but this has not resolved the issue since it is apparently not a one-time problem. Hopefully there is a fix that does not require erasing my entire songlist, and since I manually control my music, using the "restore" feature on iTunes is not an option.

  • I put my iPod on the dock station but the volume dose not play?

I put the volume on my iPod and when I put it on the docking station I hear no music I saw that the volume controller disapeared now I can't hear my music

Downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.
Go to the dock manufacturer's support site and se if they have any suggestion or if a firmware update is available for the dock
    Sometimes this works:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Video ipod turning off during play

I have been having a problem when I am playing music, using my headset, the music will turn to pause. this ishappening very frequently. Although, it doesnt occur when I have it docked and am playing it?? help anyone??

Make sure your scroll wheel is clean and is not being pressed... test it by locking hold and then seeing if you still have the same problem. If it still persists, do a reset. If you still have your problem do a restore.

  • IPod turning on and playing by itself, sucking all the battery power

    Hello,
I have an iPod mini 3.7GB version 1.4.1 model M9800LL, format Windows.
When I stop using it, or even when I manually put it to Sleep mode, it eventually starts up again all on its own, like a ghost, and my batteries end up getting sucked dry quickly. Is there a way to keep it off when I'm not using it? Otherwise I'd have to charge it every time before hitting the gym.
    Thanks

You most likely have an alarm set.
To check go to extras/clock/alarm and set it to off. Check the calendar also, extras/calendar/alarm.

  • IPod starts playing when I unplug something from the headphone jack

    Greetings,
I use Internet radio apps like Pandora and Live365. Often, when I stop the app and unplug the audio cable or earbuds, the iPod app will start playing the very first song (alphabetically speaking) in its library. At full volume, no less. So, I have to quickly hit the iPod button to bring it up, and then hit stop.
It doesn't happen every time, and I can't figure out if there is a particular sequence of events that triggers it, or if it's just random. Anyone else experience this?
    Thanks,
    DM

Due to various hardware issues, I'm on my 4th phone.
Each and every one has displayed this same "unplug and spill one's audio secrets" behavior, usually with incredibly annoying, embarrassing (I have weird, rather personal music tastes, never mind my preference in Podcasts), and potentially battery-draining results (if I leave the phone on my desk and attend a meeting for, say, an hour).
I've "reset" the phone/s (for this and other reasons) and this "feature" of the iPod turning on when I unplug the ear buds has persisted.
I have third-party earbuds (but it happened during all the time I used the Apple ear buds, too). They're the "Ultimate Ears MetroFi 200v" set; they sound great, but the "talk" button is not nearly as cleverly placed as with Apple's (it's too low-- near my belly-button-- and it also protrudes considerably).
The catch-22 for me is that if I just wrap my earbuds around the phone and shove it in my pocket, the button will activate at some point, and I'll find that the iPod has been playing for an hour... if I just yank the buds out (like I WANT to, and ought to be able to), the iPod starts playing, usually at the the loudest volume (leftover from whatever onion-chopping or laundry-folding activity saw me last listening to the phone out loud).
So, it's a bad feature. No option (that I can see) to disable it. A glitch? From Apple? C'mon... all FOUR of my phones have been otherwise perfect, lol...
Sorry for the long rant wherein I didn't even suggest any possible fixes. I'm just glad to have found others experiencing this problem, and glad that I am not the only one who hasn't found a solution.

  • IPod automatically starts playing...

I've recently noticed that my iPod will automatically start playing at random points throughout the day. When it fires up, it always starts and plays the same cd...Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath." It will play the disc all the way through, then shut down.
My iPod will be totally charged, but because of this automatic startup, the battery will be drained in a matter of hours.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how was the problem solved?
    iPod 20 GB   Windows XP

First thing to check would be to see if you have an alarm set.
To check go to extras/clock/alarm and set it to off. Check the calendar also, extras/calendar/alarm.

  • Ipod playing, but no sound coming through

I just changed the battery. Let it charge overnight. Ipod shows it's playing, but there's no sound. I've check Settings, and everything looks normal.

If the sideways X has arrows on it, it could mean that it is on shuffle. Try looking making sure that the shuffle is off.I don't know why that would affect the sound, but w/e. If it is off, then I don't know. Try taking it in to an Apple store. Hope that helps...
