IPod update server?
What has happened to update server? I can't enable voiceover on my ipod shuffle.
Hi,
I'm having the same problem: when I try to turn on voice-over I get a message saying "You have chosen not to contact the iPod software update server", and when I try to turn on automatic updates, the checkbox in settings is always unchecked the next time I open settings. Turning off the firewall doesn't help. This has been happening for a while, and I just installed iTunes 10.6.1 (7) and the problem persists.
The link in the last reply gives a 404. Any other tips?
Thanks,
- andrea

Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem -

Can't connect to the iPod update server
I am trying to restore my 5G iPod with video, but I am not able to connect to the iPod software update server. If there is anywhere that I could manually download the Firmware version 1.3 I would appreciate it. My iPod is currently running firmware version 1.2.2.
The iPod update server could not be contacted.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later
That's the error. -
Itunes could not contact iPod update server ...not connected to internet
Please help. I have: Win XP Pro, SP2; itunes 7.0.1.8. iPod ver. 1.1 5G Video iPod. Am getting error: "itunes could not contact the iPod update server because you are not connected to the Internet."
But I am connected to the internet, and can download podcasts and access itunes store. But I cannot download ipod ver. 1.2, and thus I assume this is the reason that I am getting incomplete syncs on video podcasts.
I have followed the Apple site's recommendation to ensure the LAN settings button is set to "Automatically Detect Settings" but I still get the error.
I have uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it again; still getting error. I have disabled my firewall; still no luck.
I welcome any help, please!! Thanks.

I have been trying for 3 hours to make this work -- I've checked the box and tried; unchecked the box; rechecked, rebooted and tried ... you get the picture.
hmmmm.
by any chance, are you using a proxy? in the context of Store connections, i've seen a problem with a proxy cause a connection issue, even though the network diagnostics looked perfectly clean.
working on that theory, if you are using a proxy perhaps try the techniques from this document:
iTunes for Windows can't access the Internet if proxy settings are incorrect
or perhaps just try to see if the connection to the update server goes through if you if you try this without the proxy. -
Not connecting to Ipod update server
When I try to update my Ipod classic I get a message that I can connect to the Ipod update server as I am connected to the internet. I am connected to the internet. Why can't I connect to the Ipod update server?
This is happening with my Nano 1st G as well. Followed the trouble shooting tree from apple with no luck. I am hoping it would fix my controls not working after the nano wakes up. I tried all of the 5 R's.

Hi, please help me
When my iPod was 'preparing for update' my iPod USB accidently fell out. I turned it on and a usb sign and an arrow to iTunes came up, so I plugged it in. It comes up with a message saying iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode, You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. After that, I clicked restore and it said 'The iPod software server update could not be contacted' and that's it!
I've tired,
Resetting my iPod (the usb to iTunes sign still comes up)
Holding down the Home and Power button at the same time for many seconds
Restting my computer
Going into LAN settings and changing that
Please, I really want it too work as I just got it today for my birthday
Any help would be much appriciated, thank youYu can try here. However, other users been having the same problem so it may be due to a problem with the Apple servers.

iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
Could be an Apple problem to since others have received that message today -
As I said, it's an iPhone 3GS (never jailbroken), iOS 4.1, PowerPC G4 OS X 10.4.11, iTunes 9.2. I have had the phone since new, never had any issues with it and am at my wits end trying to figure it out. I have seen many different solutions to this exact problem, but none have worked for me. Anyone have any ideas?
This is what I posted to someone else having an update issue... Just for your information:
I having the same issue about the and iTunes says "The iPhone cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.". I've had the iPhone 3GS since it came out. It was working fine until I just tried to update it. It has NEVER been hacked or jailbroken. WE AND A FEW OTHERS are having the same issue then it is more than likely that this is an update issue. I took mine to the Apple store and the tech tried to update it and he came to the same problem and told me he couldn't update it. My assumption is that we are not the only one's with this issue and that if there was a way to update it to the update before this last one it might be a solution. I don't know how to get the previous update. Apple probably is aware of the problem, and hasn't come up with a solution yet. Or, enough people haven't complained yet. The tech suggested that there might be something wrong with the phone itself, but that couldn't be since it was working perfectly before I updated it and others are having the same issue. It is highly unlikely that a lot of people are having the same hardware issue all of a sudden at the same time. Apple/iTunes needs to fix this... and hopefully soon
Also: I can update or restore my iPhone 5 and other iPhones so it is not an issue with my firewall or other software on my computer. No one touches my iPhone or my computer they are secure, locked all the time, and I have no jailbreak software on my computer (Apple tried it and they are clueless at the moment from what I can tell). -
Cannot Connect to iPod Update Server
I have a 30 GB Video iPod, and my computer is running Windows XP Media Center. I can connect to iTunes and download songs, movies, podcasts, ect. But whenever I try to update my iPod's software to the newest version it says that it cant find an internet connection. I am using a D-Link Wireless system, and everything else seems to work fine. I can get on the internet, use Xbox Live, connect my laptop, and even download the newest version of iTunes. But I can never get the iPod update to work at all. Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Apple iPod Update Server Error
Whenever I try to run an update for my iPod through iTunes, it comes up with an error that says that "The iPod server network could not be contacted." I have parental controls set up on my computer applied to me, and I'm wondering if that is the case.
Hey there,
It very could be. If possible try this:
1. Head to Start Menu
2. Click Control Panel
3. Look for and click on Network & Internet
4. Click “Internet Settings” from the next menu.
5. When the window pops up, head over to the “Connections” tab.
6. Click on “LAN Settings” located at the bottom.
7. Put a check mark next to “Automatically detect settings”
8. Hit Apply.
Once you have done this, try and complete the update again in iTunes. Hope this helps. -

Should say, I have tried altering the LAN setting to 'automatically detect settings', updating itunes etc but nothing has worked. I have a very unhappy 6 year old!
You should not get that message if you are simply trying to load the shuffle with songs from your iTunes library. If iTunes is trying to Update or Restore the shuffle, and you get that message, try the suggestions in this article

IPod Software Update Server can not be contacted
I have a vintage iPod Mini that I am attempting to Restore on a iMac PPC with iTunes 9. When I select the Restore button in iTunes, a dialog box appears stating that the iPod Update Server can not be contacted. Resolutions from the iTunes Help relate only to Windows based Operating Systems. Other discussions all relate to Windows Regarding Macs; it states that I should check my internet settings to make sure I can contact an Apple site and clearly as you can see, I can create a discussion topic, so it is not the internet.
Can anyone offer a resolution to this problemNo response by Discussion Group. BD Aqua states iTunes Store is not compatible with OS X 10.4
