Ipod update wiped my ipd, now it's in recovery mode and won't restore
I have read through many of the posted forums, but can't seem to find anything that relates to my particular issue. I have a 60g G5
I updated to iTunes 7 with no problem. It asked me to update my ipod software which i did hesitantly. This wiped my ipod and sent it into recovery mode. The ipod itself displays a message telling me to restore it. However when i try to restore it using iTunes i get the following message...
"The ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occoured. (1418)"
I cannot find anything to tell me what this error means or what I can do to fix it. I tried reinstalling iTunes 6 but it would not recognise the ipod at all. I have since reinstalled iTunes 7 but continually get the same message.

As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset this iPod by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then simultaneously pressing the select (center) and menu buttons for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is a common fix should your iPod behave unexpectedly or lock up. Once reset, the iPod should display an Apple logo for a few seconds before showing the main menu. This procedure is similar to rebooting a computer and damages none of your music or data.

Okay my Ipod Touch is stuck in recovery mode and will not restore because "the ipod software update server cannot be contacted". I have tried to restart my computer, restart my ipod, tried different computers, and re-intalled AND updated my itunes and it still will not restore. My son tried to jailbreak his ipod touch like an idiot and of course it did not work. Now his ipod is stuck in recovery mode and I can't get it to restore. I get a message that says:the ipod software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later. I have internet access and everything is working but itunes can't connect to it. Why? I have been having issues with itunes for a couple weeks now. I can't connect to the store and redeem itunes cards either.
Make sure the setting for your security software allow iTunes to contact Apple servers:

As for the iPod, since he tried to modify the software, the only thing that could help would be DFU mode , we can't help much more, problems with jailbroken devices can't be discussed in theses forums, due to the Terms of Use.
Your son has to ask those people for help, which encouraged him to jailbreak his device. -
I just tried to update my iphone 4 to the 5.01. It said that my phone backed up and started update. i went on a run and came back and my phone is now stuck in recovery mode. It keeps saying that there is an unknown error, 1. I have tried everything on the troubleshooting list and cannot figure out what is wrong! Please HELP!!!

On my ipod touch 4th generation, it somehow got into recovery mode and won't restore! Help please!
I have been searching on this topic for hours and i haven't found an answer that works so i decided to post the question myself. So on my iPod touch 4th gen., it got into recovery mode somehow and when i plug it in it says something like "ipod in recovery mode, please restore". well i clicked restore and it went through the whole process then said "ipod can not restore. an unknown error ocurred (28)". I have the newest software on the computer and ipod, i restarted my computer a number of times, i changed USB ports, no other USB is plugged in and i just don't know what else to do. The screen is just black and won't turn on. I've tried the hard restart and everything!! pleaseeeeeee help!!

Two days ago my iPod classic was having trouble playing music. After fiddling around with it for a while it came up with a screen telling me to plug it into my computer and restore it. I tried to do so many times but every time the I'd get an error message telling me it could not restore. I tried updating iTunes, restarting my computer, I even left the iPod on all night so it would run out of power in hopes that it would restart.

i am having the same issue. after spending 40 mins on the phone with apple support yesterday (she was very nice and one of the best tech calls i have made over the years) it could come down to the fact i was using a third party cable,will go and buy an apple one and see if that helps. if it does ill let you know.

I was halfway updating my phone to iOs7 when it froze halfway through where it shows the apple symbol. So I turned it off and now it says that I have to connect to iTunes. So I did and it said it was in the recovery mode and should be restored. I restored it and then it come up with a message that says "iPhone cannot be restored. My iPhone 5s is stuck in recovery mode and won't turn on, I've tried to restore and update it to iTunes and its finding my phone, but saying an error has occurred and won't work, the software is up to date, it just automatically switched itself off and when I try to turn it on, it shows the White background with the apple logo asif it's going to turn itself on but then switches off after a couple of seconds, what can I do? ive already taken it to a shop and he's looked at it, but said he can't fix it, thanks.

Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

i did an update on my sons iphone 4s and now it says it is in recovery mode and that it can not reboot or restore the phone?! it will not power down normal and keeps saying hook to itunes. all i did was an update and it went into recovery mode and will now not restore! how do i fix this???
Do exactly as it says, connect to a computer running iTunes and restore.

My husband plugged his iPod Touch into the USB port on the computer and, once it charged some, iTunes didn't recognize it as his iPod (calling it an "iPhone" rather than "Ed's iPod"). It said that iTunes had detected an iPhone in recovery mode and that he had to restore it. When he clicked on 'restore' it said, "Software for this phone is not currently available. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and try again." After a few days (after the battery was fully drained again), I plugged it into a wall charger and it began to charge. I was able to fully see everything still on the iPod and even to access his apps. I let it fully charge, but when I unplugged it, it went black again and now it will not do anything. Back to a black screen and if we plug it into the computer, the same cycle starts again with it being recognized as an iPhone needing to be restored, etc.
UPDATE: So, I let the iPod fully drain again and then plugged it into the computer and iTunes. It saw it as an iPod again and said it was in recovery mode and I was able to tell it to restore it. It went through the entire process, and as the iPod was restarting, it again called it an iPhone in recovery mode. Now I can no longer see the apps and the homepage on the computer but rather it shows the Apple symbols to plug it into iTunes to set it up - but again, says it is in recovery mode but will not restore it.

You restore the iPod via iTunes. Don't plug the iPod in. Open up iTunes and then plug it in and then try restoring, if it fails to restore a few times, keep trying. I do it on a daily basis, you're using an Apple product, remember...
EDIT: Do it from another computer if all else fails.
