IPod updater breaks iPod Mini

my iPod mini has worked fine for over a year, only a couple of freezes that were easily corrected by a reset.
yesterday I download the latest iTunes, and the iPod Updater 2005-9-23. Since then my Mini refuses to download more than 2-3 songs without locking.
I've restored to factory defaults a number of times.
i've restored to the previous iPod mini version a few times.
I can't (easliy) restore to the previous version of iTunes.
The only solution on any of the boards I can find is 'restore to factory'. Well I've been doing that most of today with no success.
Would someone from Apple like to explain what's going on? I'll be darned if I spend GBP132 sending it off for a repair when I'm sure it's just software.

Thanks Scott but that is exactly what I was referring to.
I can't tell whether it's iTunes or the iPod updater that has caused the problem. Frankly I'm not convinced that rhe 'Restore iPod' function really does what it says. If it did then by using the previous updater I should have been restoring to the exact same version that worked well until Wednesday.
And if that was the case then the latest iTunes downdate is the cause of the problem.

  • New ipod update breaks Mopar Jeep integration car kit

I updated to iTunes 7 and did the ipod update on my 5G ipod that came with it. It has broken my Mopar ipod Jeep Integration kit to listen to my ipod in the car. I get the message from the car that says "update firmware," which I assume means that the car can't recognize the new firmware. I'm downgrading now, but what I want to know is, are future ipod updates going to break my car kit every time? Is it something apple can fix or mopar? Does anyone have this problem with their car integration and ipod updates? Also, can I run iTunes 7 with the last working version of firmware, or will I lose the new movie and game features? Any other stories/workarounds/information would be great, the documentation with the Mopar kit is horrible...

I downgraded to the last ipod update by downloading it from apple and don't seem to have any problems with iTunes 7 or my car now, aside from iTunes telling me my ipod isn't up to date yet. I still would like to know if I will ever be able to update my ipod again or if I am "stuck" with this version of the ipod software? I don't like that I can't update it again without it breaking my car integration. Hopefully they fix that in next release.

  • Ipod updater-now ipod not working

I just updated my ipod mini, but now it does nothing but show the apple sign and then turn itself off after about 30 seconds.I have tried charging it, and connecting it to my computer, but it doesnt seem to fix anything.
    Thanks in advance-Dch-p

    Dylan,
Try to fix it with a Mac computer. First you must plug your iPod with a AC charger, put it in Disk Mode, plug your PC's formatted iPod with a Mac computer, your iPod will show up in the Desktop, open the Disk Utility and do a ERASE (fomat) in MS Dos format. Once completed, plug it with your PC and you will see the window pop up and ask you to do the Restore for your PC to read it. Then open the iPod updater and click Restore.

  • IPod update causes iPods to be incompatible with Xbox 360's

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1033587&tstart=0
(I felt that this topic belonged more in the compatibility forums.)
Since the iTunes 7.3 iPod software update, the iPods updated are now incompatible with 360's.
They now show up in the 360 system menu as "Audiobooks", and are unable to play from the predesigned playlists.
This is fixed by reverting to iTunes 7.2 or earlier.
However, one should be able to use the current iTunes version 7.5, and one's iPod with the Xbox 360, who many iPod users use as their entire media hub for their home theater systems.

Look in the packaging and pieces of paper that came with the Xbox 360. Mine came with a piece of paper advertising the ability to connect and listen to your iPod, and at the bottom it had a disclaimer saying that it doesn't work with the iPhone or iPod touch.

  • After iPod  update, my iPod won't disconnect or show up in iTunes

I downloaded the iPod updater. I then restarted my computer, plugged in my iPod nano, and the updater popped up with a thing to click to update it. The whole time, my iPod never showed up in iTunes, but it said do not disconnect on the screen. The updater froze, and now my iPod is updated, but has no songs. I cannot figure out how to sync it to iTunes.

Before you tear out your hair, follow the steps that Casper recommends. It works in minutes. The reformatting will mean you will have to reload your music, but that's better than tearing out your hair for sure. I feel lucky to have stumbled across the following instructions before too many hours went by. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
Windows users: If you are not able to restore the iPod, you can try to format it:
    Open Control Panel
Click the "switch to classic view" link, if necessary
    Double click "administrative tools"
    Double click "computer management"
Under "storage" click on "disk management"
    Find your iPod's listing
Right-click on it and click "format"
Select "FAT32" and start the format
After this, your I-TUNES should start up and ask you to register the NANO again, but at LEAST IT RECOGNIZES IT again. WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • IPod Update Killed Ipod

Earlier this evening I tried to update my iPod. It downloaded the software and a message said it will be done updating once the icon re-appears on iTunes. Not only has the icon not reappeared, I've not been able to turn on the iPod. I've tried resetting it several times. Nothing. I'm at wits end and can't think of what else to do.
Obviously, I can't do any of the other "R's" as it won't power on. Any advice or helpful tips before I need to pay a visit to the local Apple store.
    Thanks in advance.

First, flip the hold switch on and off and try starting it again. If that doesn't work, try restoring your iPod. When you plug it into the computer does it still not turn on? If so, try plugging it into a power jack iPod recharger. If it turns on with the power jack iPod recharger but not with the computer, then try putting it into disk mode with it plugged into the power jack iPod recharger. If you can successfully do that, plug it back into your computer and open My Computer to see if your iPod appears there. If it does, check if it appears in iTunes again. If it doesn't appear in iTunes but appears in My Computer, right click on your iPod's drive in My Computer and click Format. All of the default options should be fine, so just go ahead and do it. Keep in mind that this will delete everything on your iPod and put it into an emergency state in which you can't really do anything with it besides restore it with iTunes. Once the format finishes, try to restore it with iTunes. If your iPod still does not appear in iTunes, then I would recommend bringing it into an Apple store.

  • Is it possible to Uninstall the latest ipod update?

I, like others on this board, made the mistake of trusting Apple to produce software that does no harm. Windows XP has a facility where you can go back to a restore point. Does anyone know of a Unix command that will do something similar? I was using my ipod as a hard drive and was booting from it. I was running 10.2.8. Recently, my primary user account became unusable, but I had another admin account that I was able to boot from. Since I used the ipod updater, my ipod (has 4 buttons) will not mount. I have tried it with 2 different G4 imacs and an old ibook(G3). System profiler sees it as a firewire device, but Disk Utility cannot see it. I did recently back it up, but I think everyone would really appreciate it, if Apple issued a bug fix. Go to the Apple store, and they will tell you to just buy a new one......
    ipod Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I fixed my ipod by hitting it. Not hard, but hard enough to move the platters. You do not have resort to reformatting, opening the case and shaking it, or sending it in for repair. Just hit it. If it's not working and out of warranty, you have nothing to lose....

  • After iPod Update - how long does "do not disconnect" appear?

I've just updated my older iPod (20GB, iPod version 3.02
Model No. M9282LL) using updater 2006-03-23, and the "Do Not Disconnect" notice has appeared, and stayed for about an hour so far. Can I assume the updater is working it's way through the 1,500 song library, and that it may take a while longer? Or... have I broken the thing?
(I just completed an upgrade to Tiger from 10.3.9; iPod worked/connected fine before the upgrade, but not since then. Mounted on desktop okay, and launched iTunes, but never appeared in iTunes. The updater was an attempt to fix this problem, although I first downgraded iTunes to version 6.05, to no avail.)

To close the loop: I wound up having to "restore" (using the latest iPod updater) this iPod. Problem solved.

  • My Ipod Updater doesn't recognize my Ipod nano

Yes, everytime i try to hook up my ipod nano or start up my ipod updater, the ipod updater says "Ipod Service Error!". From there I have no clue what to do. I've done everything that has been asked i've restarted the ipod, put it in disk mode, changed the format of my H Drive, as well as reinstalled both the installer and the itunes, but still neither of them recognize eachother or the ipod. I'm getting frustrated, and i'm asking for help! If anyone has advice i'd be willing to hear it!
    Thank you!

  • IPOD Updater - Error 1324 - The Folder path contains an invalid character

I tried to install ITUNES on an external HD (I didn't want to slow down my computer by putting all of my music on my internal HD). ITunes installed and then crashed. I removed all traces of ITUNES and IPOD that I could find and went to install ITUNES again on my regular internal drive. Now it goes through the installation and REMEMBERS my IPOD serial number (so obviously I can't find all of the files to remove) but doesn't give me a choice of where to install (it still must be trying to install to my external HD) the ITUNES. All I get is the following Error message:
IPOD Updater - Error 1324 - The Folder path "Program Files" contains an invalid character
Does anyone have a solution out there?
    Thanks in advance!

IPOD Updater - Error 1324 - The Folder path "Program Files" contains an invalid character
Interesting. It's choking on the old iPod updater application. (iPod software updates are no longer handled by a standalone application ... that function was folded into iTunes beginning with iTunes 7.0.0.70.)
    Let's try the following procedure.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any entries called "ipod for windows \[date]" or "ipod updater \[date]" or just "ipod for windows" in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.
Quit out of CleanUp, and restart the PC.
Does an itunes install go through properly after that?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
