IPOD UPDATER FREEZES!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, basically i need to restore my ipod (because it has a sad face), so i updated the ipod updater to the 2006-06-28 version because the march version didn't work, but neither does this one!!! when starting up the updater it initializes and then tells me to plug in my ipod, and i do so...but after that...after waiting for ages...i cant click on either options because the updater has frozen!
i've tried installing the updater many times and leaving it to hopefully work...but it never does...how do i make it work??? help someone please!!!!

I'm having exact same problem. No problems with iPod until downloading iTunes 5.0, now chaos. Followed instructions in other threads re: how to download Quicktime and iTunes separately, so at least my iTunes now works. But in trying to connect iPod to iTunes through USB, message pops up saying "device not recognized" and computer doesn't recognize iPod. Able to fix this by putting iPod in Disk Mode, so now iPod appears in Windows Explorer (but still not in iTunes). At this point I try to use the Updater, and it freezes. Also tried right clicking on the iPod in Windows Explorer, but nothing happens and Windows Explorer then freezes. Anyone out there able to offer solution? Needless to say, very frustrating, and all apparently caused by faulty iTunes 5.0 download.

  • Video ipod update Freeze

having just installed the updated software for my video ipod,
when playing movies the picture freezes after 30 seconds or so
and then plays without sound! I have tried to reset numerous times but it does not help. music and picture files are fine though.

If you don't want to wade through all the responses, I'm copying here an extract of the answer I gave in that thread:
For those people like me who don't have firmware 1.0, I've modified the procedure a bit to suit our purpose. Here's what needs to be done for downgrading to firmware 1.0 without losing any data for new iPods that only come with firmware 1.1 Installation CD:
-Connect your iPod to your computer, ensures its updated via iTunes, then disconnect it from PC and exit iTunes
    - Download iPodSetup 2005-11-17 here:
    http://appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDW nw/iPodSetup.exe
    - Download iPodWizard here:
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153441
(download the release, top link of the two)
    - Uninstall iPod for Windows 2006-1-10 and reboot
    - Install iPodSetup 2005-11-17
-Connect your iPod to PC, make sure iTunes is not running
    -Launch iPodWizard.
-In the top left, click "Open Updater"
-Locate the iPod Updater.exe located in a sub-folder where you just installed iPodSetup 2005-11-17
-In the "Firmware:" drop down menu, select "5th Generation iPod (v.13.6.0)"
-Click "Load" just to the right of the drop down menu
-In the iPodWizard Essentials box on the right, it should say "Found 1 iPod drives:"
-Click "Downgrade Firmware". I'ts very quick.
    -Close the iPodWizard
-Again, make sure iTunes is not running
-From your Start menu, run iPod Updater 2005-11-17 and click "Update", not "Restore"
-Once the update is completed (it takes a few minutes), exit the iPod Updater and run it again to view the new firmware number. It should read:
"Software Version: 1.0 (up to date)"
-Launch iTunes. A pop up window will ask you if you want to download the new software version 1.1. Tick the box "Do not ask me again" and click "CANCEL"

  • Ipod update freeze, firewire problem, possible fix for many.

    Hello all,
I've been having a problem with my ipod 3rd gen updating in much the same way as many in this forum have throughout a number of topic threads.
    PROBLEM:
During song/playlist/content (not software update or restore) updating function one of two things would happen:
    - update would freeze at some point of the transfer (5, 74, 687 songs in to the update) and I would have to force quite itunes and, not being able to dismount the ipod through recommended procedure, I would physically dismount the ipod and receive a scolding for improper dismounting of device.
    - system would crash at some point of the transfer yielding the shaded screen and a prompt to restart the computer by depressing the front panel button for two seconds.
In each of the above cases, no matter how many songs that itunes thought it had transferred, I would only have about a dozen songs on the ipod itself, perhaps indicating a bottleneck on the G4 end of the transfer.
DEADENDS FOR ME THAT MAY STILL SOLVE PROBLEM FOR SOME:
    - swaping out cables
    - ipod software restore or restore to earlier version
    SOLUTION:
After contacting Apple support, I was led to the opinion that the problem was with the firewire port itself. This was confirmed by attaching my ipod with my cable to a roomates G5 resulting in a faultless transfer of his song library. I was ready to go out and purchase a new firewire PCI card but decided to research firewire problems in the G4 folder of Discussions. This is where I found the fix to my problem (see links at bottom of document). It would seem that Mac ports, both firewire and USB, have a tendency to bog down after awhile and need to be reset. This can be a addressed by one of three possible solutions. The first and easiest was the solution that worked for me (for other solutions please follow links at bottom of page):
    - powered down and disconnected all firewire and USB cables from the G4
    - disconnected power cable from G4 (for laptops I would guess that the battery would need to be removed, not sure if that causes any other problems though, please research)and let sit for about 30 minutes.
    - reconnected all cables and restarted computer. Ports should be reset at that point
    - I took the added measure to restart my computer once with nothing attached to USB and firewire ports and then powering down with front panel button before connecting cables and proceding with final restart.
    RESULT:
Faultless transfer of 37.6 gigs of content in less that 45 minutes.

    This worked perfectly for me!!!
    SOMEBODY PLEASE TAG THIS POST!!!
i have had the problem that everyone has posted about (i.e. - updated iTunes/iPod software and had the update/freeze problem, tried all solutions, to no avail, and was pretty much screwed.)
JUST DO EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS TO DO (powermac g5, by the way):
    1) power down the computer
    2) unplug EVERYTHING (usb, firewire, power, monitor, etc.)
    3) leave unplugged for 30 minutes
    4) plug power back in
    5) power up from main power button
    6) wait for computer to start back up, then shut down from power button
    7) plug everything back in and power up
    8) restart once more for good measure
    9) update your ipod
    10) take a sigh of relief!
you are seriously a godsend...only one thing...I BOUGHT A NEW ONE ALREADY!!! i literally bought it the day that you posted this solution. After a month and a half of trying to fix this problem, i finally gave up and bought a 20GB iPod Photo with applecare...cost me about $380.
no matter, i think i'm gonna sell my "older" ipod to my mom or dad. they'll use it doing whatever they do. plus, that way, if there's any problem, i can fix it for them without feeling bad about screwing over some stranger.
thanks again, this solution worked perfectly.

  • Video freezes when playing after ipod updating

My 60GB ipod video freezes up after a few minutes of playing video. It was operating fine until I installed the latest IPOD updater software "2006-01-10". I have tried reseting the ipod, but it makes no difference. When the freeze occurs, I found that returning back to the main menu is the only way to get the video to return to playing. Otherwise, I tried fast forward and it sometimes plays, but without sound.
This is a new IPOD, so I can return it today for a full refund from the apple store.

    playing video.
The only way to fix it is to go back to the previous updater. You'll lose everything on your iPod but you can sync again afterwards.
    1) Uninstall the 1.1 updater from your computer.
    2) Install the 1.0 updater onto your computer. It's on the CD that came with your iPod.
    3) Plug in your iPod.
    4) Run the 1.0 updater.
    5) Select 'restore'.
    6) Follow instructions.
    7) Resync with iTunes.
    Good luck.

  • Windows recognizes iPod, but not iTunes or iPod updater, causes freezing

I'm having some issues with my 60GB iPod Photo. I tried to store my friend's music on my iPod as files. Upon uploading them to my own computer, some files caused freezing, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the iPod. I finally gave up and deleted all the files stored on my iPod. All of a sudden, although Windows XP Pro recognized that an iPod was plugged in, it would no longer open iTunes automatically. When opening iTunes once the iPod was plugged in, it would cause iTunes to freeze.
I decided to restore my iPod. About halfway through, there was an error message saying my iPod could not be restored. All songs were deleted but my iPod was still not recognized. Now, the iPod updater does not recognize that in iPod is connected, even though Windows does. The updater freezes, inhibiting me from completing my restore. iTunes freezes as well when my iPod is plugged in. My iPod displays "update in progress - do not disconnect," but nothing happens. When my iPod is not connected to the computer, I can navigate through it normally, although it does need to be unfrozen when left unused for a couple of days. I cannot tell if it plays files because they were all removed during my unsuccessful restore.
I have tried reinstalling all my iPod related software and I have tried my iPod on more than one computer with different USB cables, but nothing works.
    Help, please!

This is exactly the same problem that I am having I have posted on 14th March on itunes forum. I wish you luck I wait with interest to see what someone says. My ipod was working like a dream until i downloaded the update

  • HELP ME UPDATER FREEZES OR GIVES ERROR WHEN TRYING TO RESTORE CORRUPT IPOD!

I have a 5th gen 60g ipod. I haven't used it in awhile and decided to get some vids on it. I hook the ipod up and it does not appear in itunes or anywhere. I use a 2005 updater and it tells me it's not mounted. I decide to restore it. I click restore and the updater freezes during the time bar. Because of being disconnected in the middle of the restore, my ipod is corrupted and just have the folder with the question mark. I decide to try to restore again, 5 more times. Freezes 5 more times. I download the new 2006 updater and while using that restore, it gives me the error "Error: An error occured updating or restoring iPod." Then I try it in Disk Mode for both updaters and the same thing happens. And when I try to update the ipod, the updater just force quits and doesn't even give me an error (with the 2006). The 2005 doesn't even allow me to update it as the option is transparent. Now I have no clue with what to do. Please, I layed out everything and I just want a simple quick answer. Thanks.

Try using Disk Utility to format the iPod just as you would a hard drive. Once that is complete, try the latest iPod updater again.

  • Frustrated! iPod keeps freezing when trying to update

My 40G iPod keeps freezing whenever I try to update it. I plug it into the computer, iTunes starts but then freezes after a song or two. Sometimes it crashes me whole machine. In any case, I can't add any music to my iPod, rendering it useless. I've seen s imilar posts but no solutions. I installed the latest iPod updater software and am using the latest version of iTunes. Funnily, this problem didn't start until I upgraded to the newest iTunes. Can anyone help? This is very very frustrating.

Me too .. very frustrating, spent the last 3 hrs looking for solutions.
Also noticed Apple has suspended downloads of itunes 6 for the time being ... wondering if its a related bug.

  • Latest ipod updater just freezes

I've got the latest ipod updater here and I've been trying to get my ipod updated because one day it just decided to stop working in itunes for some reason, and the updater freezes whenever it loads. It was getting the "ipod service error" thing before, but I reinstalled and now I've upgraded to just freezing. For a minute the first time I loaded it up it showed a list of ipods on the screen and looked like it wanted me to pick one, but it froze on that screen too. What's going on here?
The ipod itself still works fine when i plug it into other things to listen to it... it's just the software that seems to be screwed. Thanks for any help, in advance.

    Hi...
It doesn't "freeze" per se, like it does when the ipod is connected, but it just stays at initializing."
I've tried the solutions presented in that link more than a few times with no success.
    Oh, second note:
"iPod Updater 2006-06-28 cannot continue because there are other applications using iPod. Please close all iPod applications and try again."
This is after initializing for awhile.

  • ITunes 7 Freezes When iPod Plugged into PC & iPod Updater Isn't Seperate!

As it appears, like so many others, I'm having problems with iTunes 7 too. I've had problems with some previous itunes versions as well, which is why I don't like to use it. I use Anapod Explorer to transfer music to my ipod. The ONLY reason I use itunes is to transfer VIDEO over to my ipod. (Anapod has video support, but it puts video under "music videos" instead of "movies" in the "videos" section.) Anyway, with v.7, iTunes freezes everytime I plug my Ipod in or when I already have it plugged in and load up iTunes. At first I could terminate iPod Services in the Processes and reload iTunes and it wouldn't freeze up, but after some rebooting and reinstalling, not even that fixes it. Any other suggetions to get it working? Will I have to wait for v. 7.1 with bug fixes? Also something else I don't like about this new iTunes is that the ipod updater is apart of it, not seperate. I liked being able to download it seperately so I could use iPod Wizard to customize my ipod's look. I still can, writing directly to the firmware on the iPod instead of the updaters firmware, but doing this causes one or two...problems with the firmware. (Nothing too big, just when I'm watching a video, I can't click the center button and make the fast forward scroll come up nor the volume or any of the other video icons as well, although I have basic control) I WANT THE FIRMWARE TO BE RELEASED SEPERATELY AS WELL, NOT ONLY IN ITUNES!

  • IPod keeps freezing on update

I'm running 10.4.3 at home and for the past week have found that my iPod will not update music and freezes after copying 2-6 tracks. The strange thing i sthat at work where I'm still running 10.3.9 the iPod updates fine.
Both systems are running the same iTunes, and its really frustrating me since i can't just go out and purchase a new iPod.
I've tried practically every thing, restores, disk checks, reinstalling iTunes and so on, but so far nothing seems to be working. Is it times to suffer defeat and stop using it?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have been having a similar issue with my iPod since December. Whenever I plug the iPod into my computer to update the songs, it freezes after 20, 30, 40 songs or so. But I think I've discovered the source of the problem, at least in my case, so I thought I'd share it in case it helped anyone else.
I got an AirClick remote for the iPod for Christmas, which I use in the car. But for the sake of convenience, I've been leaving the receiver plugged in to the top of the iPod instead of removing it when I'm not using it. And ever since, it's been freezing when I update songs, but I never made the connection until yesterday. When I remove the AirClick receiver before docking the iPod to my computer, it updates as many songs as I would like (even thousands at a time) without freezing.
So if you have any devices plugged in to the top of your iPod, even the headphone remote, I would recommend disconnecting them before connecting the iPod to your computer.
    Hope this helps somebody!

  • Ipod freezes itunes; ipod updater - reformat didn't work!

My ipod started freezing itunes and the ipod updater. Eventually, after a minute or two, itunes would un-hang, but it wouldn't recognize the ipod at all! I tried everything, which eventually culminated in my manually reformating the darn thing with Windows Disk whatever. After that, the ipod updater worked enough so that I was able to restore the factory settings. I plugged it back in to intunes and....
it STILL froze itunes and the updater. If I unplug the thing during these freezing sessions, everything un-hangs instantly. I'm helpless! What do I do???

    See if this helps
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
