IPod updater killed my iPod mini!

I purchased an iPod Mini off of my boss last week, as he purchased an iPod Nano and no longer has any need for it.
I installed iTunes on my Toshiba Satellite at work, hooked up my iPod, and I while I was removing songs from the unit (which worked just fine prior to all of this), I was prompted to download and install Updater.
I installed updater, hooked up my mini, and let it do its thing, until it said to plug the unit into an ac adapter to reflash the hardware (?). Ever since, there has been an image of an AC adapter plugging into an outlet that stays on the screen, and even after plugging it into numerous outlets, computers, and USB ports, I can't get any computer to recognize the unit, and I can't get this image off of the screen (except for when I restart it and the apple image briefly appears).
I have tried resetting my iPod numerous times by toggling the hold button and depressing select and menu simultaneously for ten seconds. I have also read that I should try depressing menu and play, and nothing helps. I can't help but be discouraged.
Any words of wisdom for me? Perhaps there is something that I haven't tried (spin around three times, pray facing east, burn sage, make a sacrifice to Cthulhu, etc.)

Isit true to say that iPod Updater kills your iPod?

Hello all,
First, sorry for my poor English. I am not a professional nor a technician and I could be wrong, so please correct me. There are many problems reported mainly from the PC users that their iPod can't be recognized nor mounted after the installation of the latest iPod updater. Most of them claimed that the iPod updater kills their beloved iPods. Before we jump to a conclusion, we must understand what is iPod, and how does the iPod update work.
I believe that iPod equals a basic computer and need a OS in order to communicate with the PC. Installation the Updater will format the Hard disk of the iPod and then install the simple OS, so if we open the iPod updater file, it will show a window with two buttons i.e. Restore and Update, an Update is to copy the latest OS over the old version, but the Restore will format the hard disk before it install the OS over it. And importantly, during this process, the iPod needs sufficient of power to complete the upgrade, however, the problem comes just after the format, and the PC's USB (only 2 will work not 1.1) does not supply the stable power,even some cases that iPod does not get charge in the half way of installatin (a proper installation, you will see a running bar showing on the iPod screen just after the format), so you can imagine a hard disk got format but only got an uncompleted OS, of course, the iPod would not get recognized and mounted, and do not manage to communicate with the computer. At this stage the iPod will show a Sad iPod icon, a folder with exclamaiton points or a battery charging icon.
So, what would you do when it reach at this stage, a Reset would not work, and you would not able to do the Restore as the iPod is totally unrecognized by the computer.
Therefore, is there anyway to solve this problem, in my opinion and from my past experience, the answer is "yes", the simple way is to put your iPod in Disk Mode, when it plug to the computer, it will show as an external Hard Disk, you must fix it by doing a format (RESTORE would not work at this stage as it still can't recognized and mounted), in Mac we can use "Disk Utility" but the XP would not allow you to do the format in FAT32. After the formatting, replug the iPod with the computer, then it can be mounted and allow you to do the RESTORE.
In addition, I find an interesting point is, if your iPod formatted with a Mac, you will have better chance to be mounted with a PC, even your iPod does not complete the process of the installation of the iPod updater, and a PC formatted iPod will be likely to be fixed by a Mac as well.
How should we do before the update of the lastest software, for the XP user please do the following:-
1. Go to the system restore and create a check point in order to revert back to the previous version of the iPod updater, or do the back up using the 3rd party software such as Ghost or Go Back.
2. To have a test and make sure the PC's USB works properly. You can use the iPod or a PDA, and just make sure it got charged.
3. Have your iPod a full charge before the installation of the iPod updater

Yes, it will erase all your data with your iPod. Please do not format until you have the back up of your iPod. Very likely that your iPod was formatted by a Mac, which can't be read by your PC. Download a software called Xplay

Did iPod Updater kill my iPod?

I was updating my iPod, right? It was stuck on the "updating iPod, do not disconnect" screen on my computer for hours and I wanted to get off the computer so I dced it on my computer and when I did that, my iPod's screen went to the black Apple screen and froze. So I decided to do the Reset and now it's blank. I'm waiting for the battery to die (how long should this last?) but did I completely destroy my iPod or what? I just recently got my laptop back from repairs so I haven't had the opportunity to back any of it up Restore is kind of my last option since I really don't want to replace 1k+ songs. Thanks for the help!!!

Okay, ANOTHER update... I tried downstairs and my iPod just isn't working.
I don't think it's a problem with my computer(s), but the iPod itself. It just won't turn on; it may have completely short-circuited. Do you think that may be the case? I don't think I'll be able to to do a restore or anything because the iPod itself is just not turning on. I really don't want to get a new iPod because it may A) take awhile b/c mine's is customized and B) I don't have anything backed up (even though I have a program to do that... I feel stupid now :() and I'm so frustrated that I might not even bother going through and dling it all again.

(Sorry to the mac mini folks for posting in the incorrect forum in the first place. It's been a long week.)

Try any/all of these tips below. Some you may have seen, others may be new....
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter: Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management. Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”. Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused. Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” (or something similar).
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Your PC may have difficulty with the USB2 protocol and the iPod. See this Article for a possible solution: iPod not Recognized Correctly
Also try these hints (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.

Deleted Ipod Updater and disconnecting Ipod

When I first got my Ipod it came with ipod updater software. When I installed this software it said there was another more up to date updater so I downloaded and installed the more recent updated. I was going through my programs on my computer and noticed that I had 2 Ipod updaters installed at around 90mb each. I thought well I only need the most recent one and I deleted the old one.
Well now the more recent updater wont work it will not even boot and my Ipod would not disconnect when I pressed the safely remove hardware button it said the ipod would not stop try again later, after trying this several times I finally just pulled the USB plug out without stopping the recharging first.
Now I am downloading a more recent updater. If I delete all of the updaters and install only the most recent one will the software work again.
Another problem after I deleted the old updater when I plugged my ipod in it asked me to give my ipod a name so I did but I dont remember if it is the same name that I originally gave to my ipod and I have no idea of which name is on the ipod or the software now. What should be done regarding this to get my ipod working right.
So far my songs appear to be safe, but they are only on the ipod not on the hardrive because my harddrive is too small to store them all. I have itunes set to manually add and delete songs.

Hmm..I don't understand why you'd have 2 iPod Updaters. When someone already has an Updater and there's a new version to download, the new one REPLACES the old one - makes no sense to have 2 and confuse the user.
There's another way to eject your iPod from your computer while it's connected and it shows in the "Source" list. You can either right click on your iPod and select "Eject", or you can click on the up arrow next to your iPod and that will eject it too.
It sounds like your computer was having a problem with 2 Updaters, I think you did the right thing by deleting both of them and only downloading the latest version.
I think you can name your iPod whatever you like, I'm not sure if adding a different name will affect your iPod (when it comes to listing your songs if the iPod has a different name). How can you not remember what you named your iPod? Did it have a name at all??
Take Jeff's advice, back up your songs somewhere else besides having them in iTunes and in your mini. Looks like your hard drive is not too reliable, save all your music in a cd.

I did search on that website and got no solution. Then I went to one of the apple store which is in Staten Island mall for assistance. I made an assigment there, and the staff who responds to my case told me that they couldn't fix it, since mine is an old generation ipod. I asked him whether that ipod updater granteen the safety of user, he then told me to post my situation online to you to see whether I would get a replacement or any refund on it. 4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.

a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I'm having the exact same problem and I took my iPod to the Genius Bar this morning. They re-formatted it and re-loaded it. I took it home and the same darn thing just happened again.

IPod Update Ruined my iPod/Missing Songs

I recently decided to update my iPod, but ever since I did, my iPod won't turn on, charge, and my computer won't recognize it. I've tried resetting it, but it just beeps, then sits there with the backlight on, but nothing else happens.

P.S. Also, I've noticed as of late that about 100 of my songs from iTunes aren't on my iPod and I can't seem to figure out why. I've tried putting them on playlists, and when my iPod is docked, the songs show up as already on my iPod, but when it's not docked, they're not there.

This quote from the original posting ("I've tried putting them on playlists…") sounds as if the playlists are in iTunes and for the instance of the songs that is on the computer's hard drive rather than for the instance of the songs that is on the iPod.
Connect your iPod to your computer and then launch iTunes.
In the Source (left) pane of iTunes' window, you should see an icon for your iPod. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the that icon, and see what items now display below it. Those items are the ones on your iPod. The items that are flush to the left side of the Source pane are on your computer's hard drive, instead.

Ipod update not recognizing ipod

I am attempting to connect a brand-new ipod to my windows XP PC. This is actually my third ipod after TWO hard-drive failures. It was a free replacement so needs to be formatted.
I folllowed the instructions i was given and downloaded the new versions of itunes and ipod updater and now when i connect the ipod the updater just says 'connect an ipod to update'. I've tried everything I can think of (and trust me with my track record of broken ipods I've tried a lot), even using the Windows formatting option in 'my computer' but it wont recognize it. Does anyone have any advice?

You are waiting for the updater to prompt you to connect the iPod before you connect it?

Itunes doesnt recognise Ipod, Ipod updater doesnt recognise Ipod

As said, Im new and just bought the ipod 30gb and I tried whatever is said in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 and still doesnt work.
Ipod shows up in the Windows explorer and in the WIndows Task Manager, but not in Itunes nor Ipod updater as connected.
I tried to download older versions of Ipod updater and itunes, because I read it was working for some people, but cannot download them in any place. And at last, I wonder if there is any problem using USB 1.1 I dunno what else I can do, Im ****** off :/

Ok, I had the same problem for months but I have just fixed it!! Here is the problem I had and my solution:
Problem:
1. Ipodservice was not loading when windows xp boots up
2. In Events Viewer, System, there was he error "DCOM got error "193 is not a valid Win32 application. " attempting to start the service iPodService with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server:"
3. As a result, itunes can't see the ipod and I was unable to update it for many months
FIX:
1. The problem for me was that windows cannot find ipodservice.exe because there is a space in the path that it resides in: C:\Program Files\iPod\bin
2. This is a problem that Microsoft has documented (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812486/)
3. Open up Regedit.exe
4. Goto "HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service\IpodService"
5. Double-click on ImagePath on the right
6. Add double quotations around the ipodservice path(ie. "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe")
7. Close regedit
8. Goto Start-Administrative Tools-Services
9. Scroll to Ipodservice and double-click
10. Set startup type to "automatic" if not already
11. Click on "Start" to start the service
12. Now run itunes; you should be able to connect now to your ipod!

Software update killed my iPod

It's a video iPod, 30gb. It was working great. Connected to iTunes, which came up with a box saying, there's a new update, do you want it? I agreed, it started downloading. Screen on the iPod was black with a white apple in the middle, and a status bar across the bottom. When the status bar got to about half full, it just froze--and stayed that way for about 8 hours. I couldn't get it to turn on or off, or do anything at all. I restarted my computer, disconnected and reconnected the iPod--nothing. And it wasn't showing up in iTunes, either.
So, I did the reset. Toggled the hold switch, held down menu and select. After maybe half a minute, the screen went blank. Now, won't start up at all, no matter what I do. I've followed every troubleshooting guide on the Apple site, but nothing works. iPod doesn't show up in iTunes or anywhere on the computer (Windows XP, by the way) and will not turn on at all.
Help me? Please?

I had a similar problem after accepting an ipod software update on 1/4/08. Mine began the restart, with the progress bar appearing on the ipod screen. It did go all the way across, but then my ipod began restarting itself over and over again. It kept doing this when I disconnected from the PC, tried connecting to another pc, and tried plugging in to an electrical outlet. I finally got it to start by following the "put into disk mode" instructions (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651). I did have to press the "select" and "play" buttons immediately once the logo appeared after I pressed the "menu" and "select" buttons. Once in disk mode I reset the ipod and it's working fine now. Hope this helps.

2006-1-10 updater killed my ipod

My ipod cannot be synchronized anymore since i have updated it by the latest updater. I get a cannot write to disk message with the number -124.
I tried reinstalling the old updater but that one says firmware en hardware conflict in the ipod i cannot proceed.
What can i do?

I installed old updater (2004)
Uninstalled Itunes
Installed old version of Itunes
opened the ipod, disconnected battery.
Closed Ipod after connecting battery again (after a few minutes)
And it works all fine again

IPod Update Killed Ipod

Earlier this evening I tried to update my iPod. It downloaded the software and a message said it will be done updating once the icon re-appears on iTunes. Not only has the icon not reappeared, I've not been able to turn on the iPod. I've tried resetting it several times. Nothing. I'm at wits end and can't think of what else to do.
Obviously, I can't do any of the other "R's" as it won't power on. Any advice or helpful tips before I need to pay a visit to the local Apple store.

First, flip the hold switch on and off and try starting it again. If that doesn't work, try restoring your iPod. When you plug it into the computer does it still not turn on? If so, try plugging it into a power jack iPod recharger. If it turns on with the power jack iPod recharger but not with the computer, then try putting it into disk mode with it plugged into the power jack iPod recharger. If you can successfully do that, plug it back into your computer and open My Computer to see if your iPod appears there. If it does, check if it appears in iTunes again. If it doesn't appear in iTunes but appears in My Computer, right click on your iPod's drive in My Computer and click Format. All of the default options should be fine, so just go ahead and do it. Keep in mind that this will delete everything on your iPod and put it into an emergency state in which you can't really do anything with it besides restore it with iTunes. Once the format finishes, try to restore it with iTunes. If your iPod still does not appear in iTunes, then I would recommend bringing it into an Apple store.

Ipod updater froze my ipod - HELP!!!

I just downloaded the new update, and at the end it says to unplug it from the computer, and replug into the power source. So i did that, and nothing! it is showing the graphic on the screen to plug it into the wall but it is not actually recognizing the connection. After a while it just goes to sleep.
I have tried, re un plugging it, plugging it into different sockets etc.. and nothing..
Any suggestions??
the only thing i have noticed that could be causing it but i am not sure, is the firewire cable isn't sitting right in flush with its socket on the power plug, i cant push it in any further, but i don't remember it sticking out before, could be nothing. any advice?
