IPod Updating problem update . . .

Well its been about a month and a half since I've posted on my very popular problem among other mini users....
That Windows does not recognise the unit, charging is possible, but no updating what so ever ! ! It has been VERY frustrating... wasted a lot of time on here mainly, trying to find answers, clues - anything that could help me really, and so I went threw a long process (like a lot of you have/are going threw.
Well unfortuneately its STILL not over for me, after completely formatting my computer - uninstalling/reinstalling all iTunes/Quick Time/iPod - changing USB ports/cables..... EVERYTHING thats been suggested I've done. I stopped wasting my time asking Apple for a hand, they really had nothing for me, of course unless I was willing to cough up an extra $60 on top of the $300 I've already spent for my mini to begin with . . . I dunno I really had high expectations with Apple - Well anyways.... yesterday I hooked my mini to my dads lap top with a NEW USB cable - New software - NEW everything - and Still same problem. I've finally admitted that my MINI is the problem, not my computer which I have been putting all the blame on this whole time. My computer is fine, my iPod mini is the one with the defect.
I've given up - and Im sending it to apple - maybe they'll give me a hand and help me out a little!

As far as I know it must be connected to a wall charger to complete the update. I'm not sure if you can continue without doing that. Can you get to an Apple Store or electronic store that might even let you plug in your iPod to complete the update?

  • Software update problem : updates not found on 8088

    Hello,
I recently found that when I performed an update on my clients they always reported Up to date. I then made them point to Apple's software update and they found that Itunes and a performance update was necessary.
So I tried to find what was wrong. My server seems to have downloaded all the latest updates (including ITunes and the performance update).
I disabled SoftwareUpdate and reenabled it.
Now my clients can't even connect to my Software Update server : the bar stays fix for a really long time.
When I look at the logs from my server : I see that a few products can't be downloaded :
Product 061-7024 will not be available for installation.
Unable to download or create .smd file for product
But maybe the main problem is that when I try to contact http://myserver:8088/
I dont see anything and when I try http://myserver:8088/index.sucatalog it begins to open the file but displays only the file's beginning. It keeps downloading the rest of the file really slowly (I think that's what makes the bar stays fix when I try to update).
    Any clue ?

    Hello again,
After a few more tests, I noted this.
Before restarting Software update, new updates weren't visible to clients.
After restarting Software update : Clients unable to connect to Software Update Server : bar stays fix for a very long time. In fact it appears to be a really slow connection to the server. After a few minutes the available updates appear (ITunes and Performance update). If I click to install them. Downloading begins but it's very slow 1k/s approximately.
I tried to untick Bandwidth limitation that was set to 1Mo/s. And after restarting Software Update, surprise : my clients can connect to SUS, see the new updates and download them at LAN speed.
Why did it work before ?
I tried to reset Bandwidth limitation to 1024k/s to see if it makes any difference. Yes when it's set, SUS doesn't work.
So really painful to work with this, almost no options to fine tune the update server and it's better to let all to defaults to avoid problems it seems.

  • Has anyone found a soloution to the update problem(update ipod to v1.2)

It seems alot of people are having this problem, the ipod wound update to v1.2 and an error message keeps coming up saying error code 1417 or something like that

it might be worth trying an update to itunes 7.0.2.16, and trying the 1.2 update using that. (i've seen fewer of the 1417s since that came out.) here's a link:

  • Application update problem - update sticks at "Waiting..."

    Hi
For about the last week, on most occasions when I've tried to update an app, the icon on the phone has changed to "waiting..." but the app itself has never downloaded. If I synch the phone with iTunes, iTunes displays the same icon.
I can't find a way of re-downloading the apps to my phone and fixing the problem - can anyone help? For some of them, e.g. mapping applications, i've got quite a bit of data that I'd rather not lose..

I have had the same thing happen on two occasions. I powered off the phone and turned it back on and the app appeared right away. On both occasions the app was no long in its folder but on the main screen. I think it may have something to do with the app running in the background when it tries to update.

  • App Store update problem: updates do not install

    Hello,
since some weeks I have the following problem: In App Store -> updates an available update is shown. Then I click the update button, but it does not install:
    - at some apps there is a little black&white + sign in the top left corner of the update button. When I press the update button nothing happens.
    - at some apps the update button changes to a green install button. Once I click on the install button it changes back to the update button.
I can bypass this problem by using the search function, find the app that offers an update and click on install there. It installs correctly and the update is no longer displayed. But when there are several updates available at the same time this is an annoying procedure.
I can also buy other apps I have not yet installed without problems.
My iPhone is a 2G with the latest OS 3.1.3.
    Thanks for your help

Now I learnt that Apple doesn't like customers that use the same Apple product for a longer time. "Please throw away once we have the next iPhone".
Since no one actually said that, let alone the fact that Apple wasn't participating, that statement is nonsense.
If you haven't grasped the concept that apps become obsolete with the never ending updates of hardware and operating systems, you're truly naive.  This is true with all computer, smartphone, and software manufacturers. All things can't be supported forever.

  • IPod Touch iOS 4 Update Problem

    Hello,
Today I received a new iPod touch 8GB 2nd Generation from Apple, after my old one's audio jack failed. When I got home I decided to try and update to iOS 4 from 3.1.3. Download went fine, started to install. Everything went fine until my iPod got stuck with the Apple logo and the loading bar beneath. On my MacBook the loading bar is stuck on roughly 5%.
I was like sure, this has happened before to my 1st 8GB iTouch, we ended up getting that one replaced, then got the replaced one replaced again. So now I am on my second replacement, and it has failed me again.
I held down the home and lock button until it has reset. Original image comes up from when you first purchase the iPod, so yes I plug it into my laptop.
"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes"
Ok sure, so I decided to follow the instructions. Extracts all the data fine, then yet again gets stuck on roughly 5%, with the same image shown on the iPod.
Any one have any idea? Or will I have to return it to Apple.
    Thanks.

I also initially had problems updating my iPod Touch 32GB 2G. I also got stuck with the Apple logo and the loading bar. iTunes gave me the message it could not connect with the iPod. I reset the device and tried again. This time I just had the Apple logo and no indication on iTunes that a device was connected. I disconnected the iPod and reset it again.
At this point I thought about the fact that my battery was low and that I was also using a USB hub. I then used an external charger to charge up the battery on the iPod. After that I connected it directly to a USB port on my computer and this time it updated the software with no problem. I don't know if charging the iPod and connecting it directly to the computer made the difference or not. Perhaps as they say, the third time is the charm. So you might just need to try a couple more times. Good luck.
I will also say that the upgrade seems to be a good one. After upgrading my iPod to OS4.0 I was getting several crashes a day and some apps just would not work. I haven't had a lot of time with OS4.1 but I haven't had any crashes since updating and programs that were not working are now working.

I'm trying to update my video iPod (30GB) with the latest software (version 1.2) through iTunes, but I get the following message:

  • ITunes 7 problem (updating iPod)

I keep my music (all of it classical) on my iPod, and I want it organized in as rational a way as possible (which is not wonderful, given the limited sorting possibilities allowed by iTunes, but I digress...)
When I mount the (new, video, 5G, 80 Gb) iPod, I can set the columns to those I actually want to see and choose to sort by composer. However, every time I restart or otherwise remount the iPod, the default view has been restored, and I have to go through this all over again.
Further, while the iPod is mounted and playing, I keep getting a dialog saying that the iPod cannot be updated, because "the required file is in use." Naturally, it does not tell me what file is in question, so there's no way I can see to fix this. I don't actually want the iPod to be updated in any way apart from the browser view, and have tried to set things up (not) to do this.
I tried trashing the preferences file, but that had no effect on this problem. Can anyone point me to a solution, or at least give me a hint about what file may be "in use" that is screwing things up?
    Thanks,

PowerBook, PowerMac, XServe   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Others have reported the problem with defaulting on the view for iPods.
Classical music is underserved by the whole iTunes/tag/CDDB system (which in fairness to Apple they've inherited somewhat - I just wish they'd push to fix it).
My personal fix to it is to use Playlists - with a format of Composer | Work | Artist/Conductor | (year) | (Label)
With some repetition/omission as needed, and lots of abbreviation.
I appreciate that might not address your problem - but may provide a way of sidestepping it. Good luck regardless in finding a way forward

  • Problems updating 80 GB Ipod

I have been getting the following message each time I try to update my Ipod:
error -54 [permErr: permissions error (on file open)]
Can anyone help me fix this problem?
The sceond problem is that when my Ipod has completed updating it states that there are 23.46 GB of songs whereas in Itunes there are 28.90 GB. Can anyone help me with this please?
    Cizla

The reason some artists are not listed in the Artist menu is likely because their album is tagged as "Part of a Compilation" and you have the Compilation feature on your iPod activated.
If these albums truly are Compilations, leave their tags as-is and turn OFF the iPod Compilation feature (go into Settings/Main Menu and Settings/Music Menu and de-select Compilation in both menus). Of course, you can also leave Compilations ON since that removes one-hit artists from your Artist menu (which is the point of the feature).
If these albums are not Compilations but are tagged that way, then edit the tags to change the setting. Compilations are typically albums which have no primary artist, only a collection of artists. Some people tag "Best Of" albums as Compilations, or albums which feature guest artists, but I don't agree that either of those are Compilations. Then you also have errors in the CDDB database that iTunes uses -- errors which come from user-submitted data.
The alphabetical order problem is probably due to inconsistent use of the "Album Artist" field. Check your tags carefully.

  • Problem Updating iPod software on iTunes

I am having problems updating my iPod software through iTunes. As soon as it gets to the end of the download, an error message comes up (-48, I think) that states there was an error in downloading the update. It suggests to check my internet connection or try again later. It happens everytime. I have a very stable internet connection and my iTunes software is version 7.1.1.5

  • I have a problem updating the new ipod touch 5th generation

I have a problem updating the new ipod touch 5th generation and I need help:
With each attempt I receive the message:
iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode.  You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
The iPod only displays a USB cable with an arrow pointing to an iTunes logo.
I receive a "Are you sure..." message with the 2 options, one to Restore and Update and the other to Cancel.
Each time I have selected the Restore and Update button and then moved through the acceptance screens.  Then iTunes begins to download the iOS 6.0.1 Software Update, which usually takes about 50 minutes.  During the download I will receive messages that an iPod has been found in restore mode.
After the download is complete no update occurs to the iPod and iTunes displays the Device Summary screen showing derive Name as iPod and all other items as n/a.
The iPod was working great without any known issues prior to attempting to update the OS.

  • IPod update problems

itunes shows my ipod as continuously updating and it won't stop. the message in the itunes window says "updating ipod. do not disconnect." and it doesn't seem to be updating anything because that message doesn't switch to the status message that shows progress.
is this a glitch or something ? i have a 5G 60 GB and the latest version of itunes.

    Hi all,
I'm having the same problems as everyone else (updated to 5.0, and now my iPod is on the fritz). I tried the apple solution Gopha mentioned above, but to no avail. I have the (!)/folder icon appearing, so when I plug into the USB port on my PC, iTunes does not automatically start up. When I manually open it, the program freezes. I have tried plugging the iPod in in the "Disk mode", but that does nothing either. When I try to update to the new iPod software (9/6/05), I get "iPod service error". I can not look at the iPod as a disk in My Computer.
I tried reloading iTunes/iPod software, and that didn't help either. I have everything backed up on my PC (Dell Inspiron 1150, Pentium 4, Windows XP Home), so I have no problem "restoring" the iPod. But as I mentioned, I get the service error message when I try.
I feel that Apple must have picked up on this problem by now with all the posts on this topic I've seen. Does anyone have any advice/help???!!!
Few more things: I cannot listen to music on the iPod when its by itself, or when plugged into the computer (!/folder icon on the iPod screen). iPod is 20G, click wheel. I have about 1,000 songs on it currently (so plenty of room left)
    Much Thanks
