Ipod upgrade

hi, i have an ancient ipod and thinkin of getiin a new ipod nano for christmas, da only prob is i have a new pc and all my old music is only on my ipod and not on hard drive, if i get new ipod is there any way i can transfer all my music thats on my old ipod on to the new one

You can't transfer directly from one iPod to another but if you copy the content of the old one back to iTunes you can update your new iPod from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

SharePod Windows Only
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac and Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Using 2G iPhone as iPod: Upgraded to 2.1...iTunes will not mount phone??

Here is the deal, I bought the original iPhone on Day 1. I then purchased an iPhone 3G on Day 1. I was using my first iPhone as an iPod touch.
I upgraded my iPhone 3G to 2.1 with no problems. When I went to upgrade my iPhone 2G, everything seemed to go fine until the phone rebooted. I get an error message from iTunes 8 (35):
The iPhone "Eric's iPhone 2G" cannot be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone. Check that the SIM card is inserted in your iPhone and that it is not PIN-locked.
    See error message here:
    http://www.installuniversity.com/iphone.png
Before this error comes up, iTunes says it is "Waiting for iPhone..." I have access to the emergency call screen and that is it. Any thoughts on how to rectify this? It won't mount in iTunes so I can't restore to a previous backup.
The phone has never been jail broke or anything like that. I live in the US.
Any help would be appreciated. I am on a Mac 10.5 as well.

    Eric,
Did you have to reactivate your phone? I'm in the same issue myself, my problem is I lost the SIM card that went with my original iPhone. Picked up a new SIM from AT&T to see if that would work, and iTunes wants me to activate the phone. Granted it's using the phone number that is now attached to my iPhone 3G. I didn't activate it, but I'm wondering what you mean by the deed is done in your last post.
Would be nice if Apple prompted a user during the firmware update asking if you want to use your original iPhone as a Touch. Would make sense, since both Apple & AT&T know that the original has been deactivated.

  • Undoing ipod upgrade -please help

    Hi,
we recently upgraded to Tiger and deleted the old hard drive. I didn't back up itunes library because it was all on the ipod. when I plugged the ipod in to import everything into the new itunes everything appeared to go into the itunes library so when it said ipod is linked to another library do you want to replace with this library I said yes thinking that all the sings had been migrated automatically. However it basically wiped the ipod and so i will now have to reenter all the CDs. Unless there is any where on the machine where the old library is - it is not in trash.
    please please can anyone help
    Thanks
    doug

You could try to see if the files are still on the iPod and not over written with a data recovery program such as Data Rescue.

  • 2004 Ipod - upgraded software now requires external power source

    Why!?
After finding my old Ipod I connected it up to ITunes and accepted the software update. This went well but now to complete the process I must plug the Ipod into an external power source - a wall plug. I no longer have the original charger and so purchased one (a Technik) from my local Tesco and unfortunately the Ipod does not seem to recognise this as an external power source. Would people recommend obtaining a power cord/plug from apple directly - is that possible now? The Ipod is completely useful now following the upgrade and I feel agrieved about having to spend more money trying to sort this out when it worked perfectly well prior to accepting the upgrade. Is there anything else I could try - other than buying a new Ipod I realise. Thanks

I remember having a similar problem after having upgraded and older iPod whose power source I had lost. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to get things working without that final step. It was a pain, but eventually I found a friend with a power source that I just borrowed.
It seems odd that your Technik didn't work, but third party devices can be hit or miss sometimes. My friend's power supply was a random car kit that he picked up on the cheap, and it worked fine. Before you go out and buy another iPod, I'd try returning your Technik and getting something from a different vendor.

  • Ipod upgrade 1.2.1

My iPod currently has software version 1.2 installed. Version 1.2.1 was released at the weekend and iTunes says that my iPod is up to date - with only the option to restore rather than update available.
I reinstalled and repaired iTunes this morning just in case ...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in anticipation.

I just wanted to suggest another way that works if you go to the Help menu and click "Check for Updates" it will bring up the box saying that the version of iTunes you have is current or tell you if you should update but when you close that box it will ask you if you want to update your iPod assuming there is an update available this is how I was able to update to 1.2.1.

  • HT5704 Why won't my iPod upgrade?!

For some unknown reason, everytime I try to update my iPod 4th generation it says something like: "IOS 6.1.3 cannot download because you have lost connection with the Internet." But I have perfect wifi for everything else? Please help. Thank you.

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • Free ipod upgrade

When you buy a mac for college, you get a free 2g ipod touch, right? If I add in an extra hundred can I get a 3g 32 gig ipod touch? or is the rebate only for the 2g.

if you check http://www.apple.com/promo/pdf/BackToSchoolTermsConditions_US2010.pdf you would see you will get back 199 for 3 different iPod Touch versions (the second gen 8GB and the 2 third gen versions)
you would need to pay the full price on any of them then will get the 199 back after you submit the rebate so yes you can get a 32GB 3rd gen iPod Touch for 299 and get 199 back

  • Development iPod Touch Expired - Now Cannot Upgrade

I have an iPod touch I used to do some early development with the iPhone SDK. I am a registered developer. I stopped the development a couple months ago, so I did not continue upgrading the iPod with each new Beta release. I did, however, agree each time to the updated Apple agreement. Now that 2.0 has been released, I went to upgrade that iPod to the release version - but it seems stuck. When I attach the iPod to the computer - both iTunes and Xcode say that it is expired. However, when I try to upgrade it in iTunes - it says that version 2.0 is the latest version (its running a beta of 2.0). I see no where that I can download an .ipsw of any version anymore, to try a downgrade or anything. So, how do I get my expired beta iPod upgraded to the current 2.0 version?
    Thanks,
    -Chris

If you bought the firmware do this:
    Go to:
    # In Mac OS X, the folder is
    /Users/username/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
    # In Windows Vista, the folder is
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
    # In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the folder is
    C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
Then copy the firmware you bought (something like 1,1 5A37.ipsw)
    Copy it somewhere you remember
After that open iTunes and click+shift(the key) restore.
A window asking for a file will show up. Select the one you have just clicked.
iTunes will restore your iPod and install the new firmware

  • 2G Ipod Touch - iOS 3.1.3 - ITunes 10.1 - Can't upgrade to version iOS4.2.

I hope someone can offer any information about how I can get my Ipod upgraded. When I run Itunes, I get the message that 3.1.3 is already the current version. I have tried reinstalling ITunes, completely resetting my Ipod. I am certain that my device is a 2G device since I got it February 2008. Is there some kind of .ini file that causes Itunes to always search for a particular version? I know others have had similar issues but I have never been able to find a simple explanation about this. Please, any help or assistance will be greatly helpful also, where can I find out whether my device is actually 2G. I don't have Apple Care so the Apple website is useless to me. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

*Please read this correction...I may be wrong about when I purchased my device*

  • ITunes freezes when trying to upgrade iPod touch software

I just purchased the iPod upgrade software, the iPhone 2.2 software upgrade. As iTunes is backing up my iPod touch, it freezes before it can finish the job. This has happened 3 times now, and I am still unable to update my iPod version.

Sorry. I just needed to restart my MacBook.

  • How to tell if you are buying a 5th or 5.5gen iPod.

I'm looking to buy a new iPod, upgrading from my trusty 3rd gen. I want to buy a 30gb model but is there anyway I can tell between the new ones and the old ones? The only store near me is known for selling outdated products so I want to be sure.
    Thanks

I am really glad that someone asked this question. I have just been given my Christmas prezzie early, and I was slightly worried that it might not be the 5.5 or Sept 2006 version.
Anyway, I have a very cheeky picture of Mr Depp on the box complete with the tricorn hat, and my serial number ends in V9P!
(My main concern was the extra resolution for the movies which as doubled i believe from the first version).
    Thanks

  • Ipod Freezes when Screen Dims

I bought my ipod about 3 months ago. It was working fine and only froze once, but a couple of days ago, after updating it and updating iTunes 7, it froze again, so i pressed menu and select to do a reset, however when turned back on, after about 5 seconds of no scrolling, it froze. I did a reset again, it froze again when it was about to dim. I am unable to do a restore because it freezes the second the restore starts. Does anyone have any Ideas???

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Restoring would be the way to go in your case (may fix your iPod's issues).
I am unable to do a restore because it freezes the second the restore starts.
Do you have the latest version of the iPod Updater? If you don't, then try ejecting your iPod, upgrading to that software, connect your iPod again to try a restore.
    iPod Updater
If you still cannot restore, have you tried the Five R's (other than restoring) to attempt to get your iPod to properly restored?
    The Five R's
If you still cannot restore your iPod, then it may be time to send your iPod in to Apple. See this below:
