IPod Uploads Songs It Already Has

Hi,
I don't know if this is normal behavious or not.
I've noticed that when I plug in my ipod (it is sent to automatically update only a couple of selected playlists), the free space will shoot up by a certain amount (varying) and then it will upload a lot of tunes that have been in my library for ever.
I would understand this if i had changed any ID3 tag information, but I haven't. I have a feeling it could be tracks I've played since last time (can't be 100% sure though).
It seems a bit excessive to reupload the whole song just to update the playcount. Is that not the point of the .xml library file?!?!
Look forward to your input,
THanks,
Ben

Thanks peeble, yeh I understand that the info. is synched. I always though this was just done by an entry in the library file though. It seems very odd to have to upload the actual mp3 file again to get that info to the ipod, doesn't it?!
Ben

  • Using someone elses computer to download songs (who also has an ipod)

I've just bought an ipod nano 2GB but live with a guy who allready has a ipod (one of the old 30GB ones) so his ipod stuff is allready on our computer. Does this mean that I can't upload songs or can two different ipod thingo's run at once on a computer? Or does the first persons ipod progrm overule everything. If this is the case because he has a larger song capacity thanmy ipod can I just pick which ones I want to go on mine out of his or does it just not work like that? To sum things up it is possible to have two different ipods uploading songs on the one computer.

  • HT1373 Is it possible to transfer songs on iPod to a computer that already has an iTunes profile for someone else?

Is it possible to transfer songs on iPod to a computer that already has an iTunes profile for someone else? I recently had my laptop stolen so I no longer have iTunes backed up on a computer.

Do you mean you do not have a backup of your stolen computer?

  • Trying to upload songs onto ipod

I've had my ipod for about 4 months now. i just got out to school about a month ago and today was the first time trying to upload some new songs onto it. when it connected to my computer, it would show the "do not disconnect screen" on it, then reset. i tried doing this 3 or 4 times, and it has yet to work. i was wondering how i could go about fixing this, or if it's just a problem with my ipod that i can't fix? thanks a lot.

I had/have the same problem. I say both - because I went ahead and had to restore the ipod tonight. Itunes nor my PC would recognize it. I downloaded the upgrades for itunes and the ipod installed them both. Went ahead and uploaded all the songs again and it worked fine. Then I disconnected the ipod, uploaded another cd to see if it would upload to the ipod and nope it wouldnt. Itunes would not recognize it. The only way I can disconnect it now is to shut off the PC because all I get is the "do not disconnect" warning. When the PC finally does recognize it - it tells me I need to update the lastest software for the ipod, but then it freezes and when it finally does actually do something - it only gives me the option to restore it. I dont want to do another restore and am at a total loss of what to do next. I have read thru the FAQ's and cant find anything that helps unless I am overlooking it. So any help would be great. Hope we get this problem worked out..Thanks

somebody told me it might work and sure enough it did. I had 10-15 files that could not be sent to my iPod so it took a little while but eventually, everything was back to normal. Hopefully this works for you too!

  • Disk error...Ipod stops uploading songs after 8

I just bought a new ipod... it starts uploading songs fine and normally and then it just stops after 8 songs..and a box with "disk read error......" comes up. I have read and reread all the support info...and have updated windows as much as possible...also i have uninstalled and reinstalled i tunes..and the updater...also reset the ipod...can anyone help please?? I AM so frustrated... or has anyone had a similar problem??

You're lucky - mine stops after 2 or 3. The only workaround I have found is to stop syncing, use the iPod (listen to it) and come back later. Each time I do this it works fine for 1 or 2 new song loads and then I get the disk error. It is as though with any more it is getting "confused".
    Any suggestions.

  • IPod randomly stops uploading songs

I have just restored my iPod (iTunes asked me to) and I have made sure all the options are correct, but for some reason, my iPod stops uploading songs (and is very hot). Sometimes it stops at 34, 72, 110, etc. I also have the most recent iTunes and iPod Software Updater. I don't know whether it's a solvable problem or my iPod is completely broken. Any help would be great.

Yes!!! Me too--Got the folder w/exclamation pt, Restored iPod (a second time after this problem occurred, just to make sure I did it right the 1st time), try to download songs and it'll only do about 5-7 at a time (I don't have as many as a lot of people, but 1200 songs 5 at a time HURTS)! HELP!!! (sorry. very frustrated--this has lasted a week!)

  • New Computer-Old Ipod: Uploading Ipod mini songs to new itunes

I recently purchased a new computer, but I am unable to upload my songs from my ipod to my new itunes. The only option I'm able to find is to 'update' my ipod with the songs in the itunes that I just downloaded (which is new-so it has no songs) My Ipod is not showing up as a removable device, which I think is the key to being able to upload the songs that are on it. Does anyone know how to upload songs from an Ipod?

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Trying to download my purchases from my iPod but it is not working. I have a new OS on an old computer and I can't even download the songs from iTunes because it thinks the songs are already on this computer. What should I do?

Tried to back up music before new OS was loaded but for some reason, it only kept artists through the letter J. I did not realize that until I restored my iTunes under new OS. Now I tried to download my iTunes purchases from the iPod and I can select the "Transfer Purchases from iPOD" but then nothing seems to happen. I tried to download form iTunes and it says the songs are already on my computer. This is either because I did originally download them to this computer on the old operating system or because the names are still in iTunes even though the file associated with them is not. I'm not sure. I don't know what to try next but it is nearly 600 songs so I need to figure it out.

Does iTunes recognize the phone at all? Or just the computer?

  • Can't update my iPod 30gb vision + problem uploading songs on it.

I could upload songs to my iPod in the beginning, but then I connected the iPod with iTunes on a mac and from that time I'm not able to upload any new songs on it anymore.
So I downloaded the new itunes V 7 to see if it maybe would work with it, but mij iPod needs to be updated to be able to show up in the new iTunes, but I can't get it updated and I always get this error when I open iTunes:
'The software for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod software'
Which is ******** because it worked with the older version of iTunes.
    Anyone have had this problem?
    Pard'me for my English btw.
    Thnx in advance

Have you checked out these two documents which address the issue?
    "Please Reinstall iTunes" message appears

  • If my  ipod nano already has music on it but not my account will all my stuff be lost when i sync it to my account

if my ipod nano already has music on it but not on my new account will all my stuff be lost when i sync it to my new accont and would i still be able to add stuff from the old account to my ipod

All your iTunes Store purchases are linked to the account.  I do not think you can use two accounts with an iPod*, so you will have to choose one account or the other, and use only the things purchased under that account.
*I've never actually tried, but that's my understanding.  You'd get a better answer by posting in the correct forum.  Try the iPod forums rather than the Using Apple Support Communities forum.
